rating this as a series because i've just finished the last chapter!! i believe that no matter what age you are, even though this is very much a high school coming of age story, there will definitely be something you can take away from this. pike y'know when it's a story of a closeknit group of three friends it's gonna be good. the way they're there for each other and grow together is just so,, urghhhh ygwim.
i love how this is more than just a love story. yes it's about the complicatwd web of feelings between Ryuji, Makoto and Saki but there's more going on. in this respect it talks about how much of your own feelings you can put your faith in and how much you're willing to sacrifice for another, like how Makoto would date Saki (got turned down) to be 'normal' with her, did go out with Ryuji as his boyfriend because he was bis best friend, Saki repressing her feelings out of consideration for Ryuji and even Ryuji doing the same for her. there is just so much to unpack in the relationship between these three and i love that they're still together even when they're apart in the end.
i think i do see myself in all three of them in some way. there was an incident once where i saw what Ryuji did, realising someone you treasure also does the same for someone else and can't see you in that same way. it hurts the way it feels like you've been made a fool of with no one at fault, and yet here you are with those feelings. but at the same you end up feeling happy for them and yeahhhh not unpacking that here but you get it hehe
and of course Makoto and Saki. that feeling of not knowing what you're doing or where to go next is so real. i've lived through most of my years floating around not knowing what to do with my life and it's all because the one time i wanted to do something i ended up regretting it. if this manga has taught me anything it's that there's nothing not worth trying so.... maybe?
the themes of identity with Makoto coming to terms with who he is, though. not needing to put a label on it and just being himself is nice to see.
also i have to say that the art style is absolutely beautiful. the visual metaphors combined with the colour palette always sets the mood so well and the best example i can use of that are the cherry blossom scene between Saki and Makoto and the part where it's cloudy at the end when the three of them climb the hill and how it's sunny the next. the mix of chibi and beautiful line art definitely makes this stand out.
i could gush more about this but alas i'm on the way to work. everyone please read this!!
edit: just read the extras of their middle school era and why are they so cute. Ryuji was so right, that moment when Makoto found him in the mountains was straight out of a shoujo manga. but him repressing his feelings for Makoto to feel normal though..... pain......
