Eddie Vedder is an American musician and singer-songwriter who serves as the lead vocalist and one of three guitarists for the American rock band Pearl Jam. Vedder left the Southern California music scene and moved to Seattle, Washington in 1990 to join Pearl Jam where he rose to fame amid the grunge movement of the early 1990s. He is notable for his "golden baritone" vocal style, and is considered a cultural icon of alternative rock. He has also been involved in other music outside of Pearl Jam, including soundtrack work and contributions to albums by other artists. In 2007, Vedder released his first solo album as a soundtrack for the film Into the Wild (2007).
Back in 1991, Pearl Jam was evolving as a popular grunge rock band based out of Seattle. I was a fan of their songs and often listened to their debut album, Ten. I also enjoyed their second album, Vitology. When I discovered that lead singer Eddie Vedder narrated and performed an audiobook, I Am Mine, for the Words + Music series as an Audible Original, I added it to my library. I’m fascinated by learning about people, and I have fond memories of listening to Pearl Jam in the 1990s.
Vedder begins the audiobook with an entertaining anecdote about his journey into the music industry. I admire his dedication to performing tasks for musicians in small music auditoriums without compensation. Through these experiences, he honed his musical skills by observing the intricate workings of shows behind the scenes and learning from the wisdom of the artists. He expresses his gratitude to his musician mentors.
Vedder shared the shock and awe he and Pearl Jam felt when they achieved fame. It was intriguing to learn that he coped with fame by living a rather secluded lifestyle. He rarely left his home and spent most of his time alone. Vedder’s humility was evident when he spoke about being able to purchase a house, a feat he never imagined possible. I miss the days when artists pursued music solely for the joy of it, without the pursuit of fame and fortune.
It was fascinating to delve into Eddie Vedder’s music career. He discussed Nirvana, the tragic incident that occurred at their concert in Denmark, and his solo album and soundtrack for the movie Into the Wild. Vedder is a private individual and refrained from revealing any details about his wife and children. I particularly enjoyed the acoustic performances interspersed throughout the audiobook.
I Am Mine is episode #24 of the Words + Music series by Audible. Currently, there are 41 artists highlighted in the growing series. Each artist’s story, narrated by the artist themselves, is approximately 90 minutes long and offers insightful and enjoyable content.
I have photos, videos, and additional information that I'm unable to include here. It can all be found on my blog, in the link below. A Book And A Dog
I appreciate Eddie Vedder even more as a songwriter, performer, and artist after listening to this. He isn't reading a script- he is sharing his memories. I thought I would be most excited to hear his thoughts on the Ticketmaster incident (which I did), but honestly I enjoyed the stories behind how he came to write the different songs he performed. I appreciate that after all the success he has had, he still is challenging himself and learning new instruments, new styles, and new genres of music. This was a great listen for my first audiobook for 2025.
A short audiobook that includes some behind-the-scenes stories about Eddie's experiences in the music industry up until now. It was interesting if you are a Pearl Jam fan or just like listening to him.
Kinda short. More time is songs that you can hear other places than actual content. A bit too guarded and not a lot of depth or why. This feels like a great first draft but incomplete. Eddie seems like a really cool guy though.
I love Pearl Jam, their music has been the soundtrack to my life. Being able to listen to stories from Eddie about the music is such a gift. Eddie has the most beautiful voice and he is the very definition of charismatic. Would recommend you listen to him whether you are a fan or not.
Another great listen in thae Audible series. I love Eddie Vedder & Pearl Jam, but have never felt that I knew anything about them. So, in that sense, this was great to listen to. Parts of the puzzle were filled in.
