About the author

Dhruv Bhatt was born on 8 May 1947 in Ningala village of Bhavnagar State (now Bhavnagar district, Gujarat) to Prabodhray Bhatt and Harisuta Bhatt. He studied at various places, standard 1 to 4 at Jafrabad and Matriculation from Keshod. After studying commerce for two years, he left further studying[1] in 1972 and joined Gujarat Machine Manufacturers as Sales Supervisor. He voluntary retired and started writing career.[2]

His novel Akoopar has been adapted into a play directed by Aditi Desai.[3] Tattvamasi was adapted into the 2018 Gujarati film Reva.[4]

I really enjoyed the meaningful, beautiful and so unique language of Geer and its people, and specially the 'One Liners':

Having read Samudrantike and enjoying it, i turned to Akoopar and loved it. Dhruv Bhatt is masterful in creating characters that stay with you till the end. You would immediately know you think if you met them. Sansai, Mustafa, Aai, Ahmed, Vikram, each one are living characters that stay with you. He is also wonderful in creating magic of Gir , the relationship between man and animal , the relationship of man and nature and the overriding goodness of Gir dwellers. Dhruv Bhatt's stories are like running waters of the river, placid and peaceful. At the end, you feel good. You feel there is no real end. Should there be one?

I am sure of one thing that once you have finished this book, you will find yourself wanting to shift to a village within the Gir sanctuary, just like its author has done.
The book is an attempt to discover the Sasan Gir, its precious lions and people who have been neighbours to lions.
It is an unforgettable experience that this book presents to you right at your home.

Akoopar by Dhruv Bhatt

It didn't matter to me (or say mattered just a bit) whenever I read about death of lions at Gir Sanctuary. The current scenario too when suddenly one by one 23 lions found dead, it surely left me disturbed. But after reading this book, I now can feel the importance, that feeling of losing a family member of the people of Gir, how it must be hurting them to know this.

This is my second outing with Dhruv Bhatt, and how he makes the reader wanderer ! His travelogue styled tales entwined with human feelings is something that I haven't read yet from any other author. After the superior Tatvamasi, he takes us on ride to the land of kings. And if you are not a nature lover, you'll be. If you are, you'll be overwhelmed at places.As always, lead character doesn't have name. And a talkative lady is here too. (Here I didn't like her much, making her 'munh-fat' gone overboard). And all the supporting ensemble, is just so perfect. Though I'm a bit disappointed how the book concludes, I still love it for the hidden, surreal commentary it makes on urbanism.

ધ્રુવ દાદા ની આ રચના અદભુત, તાત્વિક, ક્યારેક પૂર્ણ હાસ્ય થી તરબોળ કરનારી, લાગણીઓ થી ભરપૂર, શાણપણ સહીત ના સાહસો ને ઉદ્ધૃત કરતી, "ગીર" ને નાયક બનાવી ને આપણા 5500/- રસ (અભયારણ્ય ની મુલાકાત નો ખર્ચ) બચાવીને નઝર સમક્ષ પ્રગટ કરી મૂકે છે.

સૂક્ષ્મ ફિલસૂફી
આગળ શબ્દો નથી જડતા. ફ્રી માં ગીર ના સાહસો અને ઈમોશન્સ ને માણો.

6 વર્ષ પછી ફરીથી વાંચ્યા પછી પણ હું આ પુસ્તક માટે બહુ નહિ લખી શકું. હા, પહેલી વાર કરતા આ વખત , વધુ અસર કરી જાય છે આ કહાણી, એના પાત્રો. રડાવી પણ દે ઘણી જગ્યા એ. એક અતુલ્ય સર્જન.

After a long time I have read any Gujarati novel, and I am very happy that my friend gave me this book which is based on life and tradition of Gir. I have visited Gir forest many a times and also stayed in Sinhsadan in Sasan Gir, but after reading this book I am desperate to roam in jungle with local people and wants’ to connect myself with Gir.
The book is based on life of cattle breeders; they are called Maldharis in Gujarati who lives in Gir forest, which is known for last survival of Asiatic lion. The author has very well described the life and tradition of Maldharis. The way of conversation, philosophy of life and relationship with nature and animals, especially with lion is thoroughly described. The book is a good example to urban people, how these tribal taking utmosts care to preserve this Nature. The author has so authentically presented the entire novel it seems you are watching a movie.

The central theme of the book is about symbiotic relationship between humans, lions and nature. The peoples see Gir as a living entity they talk with jungle, gives name to the hills. One of the best stories I liked among the entire book is about railway station manager from south India who stays at Kaasiya Nes and constructs concrete water tank for leopard and other animals.

I highly recommend this book for wild life and adventure lovers, who want to know the true nature or living habits of tribal people who resides in jungle. A must read book. Also this book is translated in English also.

અકૂપાર એ ગીર અને ગીર ના જીવન સાથે સંકળાયેલી કથા છે જેમાં લેખકે ગીરમાં પોતાના વસવાટ દરમિયાન થયેલા જાત અનુભવ આલેખ્યા છે. સીધા-સાદા લોકોના મુખેથી જીવનના રહસ્યો અને સચ્ચાઇઓ લેખકને આંતરિક રીતે કેવા ઝંઝોડી મુકે છે તે અહિં ખુબ સચોટ રીતે બતાવ્યું  છે. ગીરની તળપદિ ભાષા વાંચતી વખતે જાણે સાક્ષાત ત્યાં પહોંચી ગયા હોઇએ અને પ્રત્યક્ષ કોઈને સાંભળતા હોઈએ તેવું અનુભવાયુ .વાર્તામાં તો લેખક ગીરની ધરતી અને આસપાસના ચિત્રો દોરવા ગયા હોય છે પણ વાંચતી વખતે એમના શબ્દો દ્વારા સમગ્ર ગીર અને ત્યાં ધબકતા જીવનનું આબાદ ચિત્ર મારી આસપાસ ખડું થતું મે અનુભવ્યુ છે.
        પોતાની કહાનીઓમાં સ્ત્રીપાત્રોને આગવી રીતે દર્શાવવાની તેમની કળા સરાહનીય છે. જે રીતે સમુદ્રાન્તીકે માં અવલનું પાત્ર નોખું  હતુ તે જ રીતે અહિં આઇ મા અને સાંસાઈ છે. આઇ મા જે રીતે ગીર ને ખમાં કહે છે કે પ્રકૃતિ અને ધરતી નો મહિમા કરે છે તે દિલ ને સ્પર્શી જાય છે. 'અકુપાર ' શિષઁક નો અથઁ પણ એમણે આઇ મા ના મોઢે જ કહેવરાવ્યો છે.
             ૧૭- ૧૮ વર્ષ ની સાંસાઈ જેટલી મશ્કરી અને ચંચળ છે એટલી જ સમજુ પણ છે અને જેટલી ગુસ્સાવાળી છે એટલી જ લાગણીશીલ પણ છે.
                 ગીર ના લોકો સિંહને નામથી ઓળખે છે. લેખક ને ખુબ નવાઈ લાગે છે જયારે તે સાંસાઈને  સિંહણને 'રમજાના' એવા નામથી બોલાવતી સાંભળે છે. સાસણ ગીરમાં માણસો અને હિંસક પ્રાણીઓ એ એક-મેક ને કેવા સાચવી લીધા છે અને સ્વિકારી લીધા છે તે આ વાર્તા પરથી અદ્ભુત રીતે છતું થાય છે.
લાજોની ગાય વાળો પ્રસંગ પણ આ વાતની સાક્ષી પૂરે છે. સાંસાઈ એક વખત કહે છે કે ગીરમાં સાવજો અને માણસો એક બીજાની આમન્યા રાખે છે.  અરે,  ગીરના સ્થાનિકો ગીર ને સ્ત્રીલિંગ થી સંબોધે છે તે પણ નવાઈભયુઁ લાગ્યું.
                 ગીરની સાથે નો પ્રદેશ ઘેડ અને તેની માછીમાર પ્રજાની વાત પણ રસપ્રદ છે. તેમના ગામની સરપંચ રાણી જે રીતે સરળ અને હ્રદયસ્પર્શી ભાષામા તેમને વ્હેલ અને શાર્કનો શિકાર નહિ કરવા સમજાવે છે તે લેખકને તો આશ્ચર્ય આપે જ છે સાથે-સાથે આપણી આંખમાં પણ પાણી લાવી દે છે.  એક પણ ભારેખમ શબ્દ વાપર્યા વગર કે વજનદાર વાતાવરણ ઉભું કર્યા વગર સીધી અને સરળ શૈલીમાં ખૂબ મોટી વાત વાંચનારના દિલ અને દિમાગમાં ઉતારી દેવી તેને લેખકની વિશેષતા ગણાવી શકાય.
                    અહિં લેખકે ગીરમાં આવી રહેલા બદલાવ અને તેની સામે પ્રકૃતિપ્રેમી એવા સ્થાનિકોની લાલ આંખ પણ રજુ કરી છે. છાશ ને સ્થાને ચ્હા આપવાનું કે પૈસા લઈને છાશ આપવાનું તેમજ ટુરીસ્ટોને આકર્ષવા કુદરતને નુકસાન થાય તે રીતે ગીરની અંદર રસ્તા બનાવવાનું, ખેતરને વિજળીના તારની આડશ કરવી કે પૈસાને ખાતર જાણીજોઈને વસુકિ ગયેલી ગાયને સિંહનું મારણ બનાવ��� ત્યારપછી વનખાતા પાસેથી તેનું વળતર મેળવવું વગેરે. 
ગીરમાં કુવાડિયો ઉગે તેની સામે આઇ માની ચેતવણી કે પછી રવા આતાનું શિકાર કરવાની સામે વિર���ધ નોંધાવવા છેક જુનાગઢ સુધી જવું વગેરે વાતો પણ એમનો ગીર પ્રત્યેનો લગાવ રજુ કરે છે.
          હજુ આ નવલકથા વિશે ખોબલે ને ખોબલે લખી શકાય પણ એનો ખરો રસાસ્વાદ માણવા માટે તો પુસ્તક વાંચવુ જ રહ્યું.
એક અત્યંત માર્મિક અને ભાવવાહી નવલકથા. મારા મતે આ નવલકથા ને ગુજરાતી સાહિત્યના 'unputdownable ' પુસ્તકોની શ્રેણીમાં આસાનીથી મુકી શકાય. વાચકને સાક્ષાત પ્રકૃતિની ગોદમા હોવાનો આહલાદ્ક અનુભવ કરાવવા બદલ શ્રી ધ્રુવ ભટ્ટનો આભાર માનવો જ રહ્યો.

It's an amazing book describing how the Maldharis (people of Maldhari tribe of Gir) have conserved the forest and preserved the wildlife of Gir since decades. The centre of the novel is Gir (the last home of asiatic lions). The main character of the novel is a painter, who's got to explore the Gir. Some incidents like that of Rava aata and of Dhanu are quite thrilling. The culture and traditions of Maldharis and their harmonious relationship with the nature and animals and their philophhy of life are well depicted by the means of several amazing incidents.

You cannot resist temptation of completing this novel in a single sitting. Such a beautiful novel about Gir forest, lions and natives. The interdependence of human and nature has been illustrated so beautifully that no book on environment can do in such manner. It feels like you yourself roam in jungle when author describes it. Natizen groups and accent of each of them is narrated so lively that you can't forget them for days.

As mentioned in the preface, this book is about the relation of Maldhari tribes with Nature, Animals & specifically Lions. They treats the Lions with utmost respect, understands their space, their behaviour & tried to live peacefully with them. It is amazing story & have all the potentials to bring on big screen.

If all the tribes across India is leaving alongside jungles are having such respect & co-existence attitude then we can hope the conservation will be automatically taken care of.

On a surface its book on travel or place, because it is based in Gir, Gujarat one of the two places in world where lions are found, and only place with asiatic lions.

Book is written so well it reflects the values of people and give you distinction between true wisdom and knowledge, subtly it makes you understand wisdom has nothing to do with degree and education isn't what we get in schools and colleges.

It’s nothing but magic the way Dhruv Bhatt puts the simplest yet the most meaningful,nuanced and heart touching words in the illiterate simpletons living close to the nature. At one movement they make you soar to the heights and come next movement you’re confined to the depth of a bottomless well. The prose is quite unique and layered. Also all books has a theme of a wanderer, seemingly lost protagonist and it’s always a woman who leads him towards the light. The most subtle ode to feminism I suppose.

આમ તો આ પુસ્તક દોઢ વષઁ પહેલા પુસ્તક મેળા માથી ખરીદેલું પણ તે પુરુ આજે થયું. ધૃવ ભટ્ટ નુ પુસ્તક “અકુપાર” એટલે કુદરત (ગીર) ની સાથે ગીર ના લોકો નો કેવો આત્મીય સંબધ તેને એક સીધી સરળ રીતે નીરુપણ કરવાનો એક સાર્થક પ્રયાસ. શરૂઆત માં થોડો કંટાળો આવે પણ જેવા પુસ્તક ની મધ્યમાં પહોંચીયે એવી અનુભુતી થાય કે પોતે ગીર ના જંગલ મા સિંહો ની વચ્ચે નેસ (નેહડા) ની મહેમાનગતિ માણી રહયા હોય. ગીરના લોકો ની સિંહ માટે અને સિંહ ની માનવી માટે ની મર્યાદા જાળવવાની પદ્ધતિ રોચક છે. પ્રકુતીની ઉપાસના કેહવાતા શીક્ષીત સમાજે ગીર ના નેહડા માંથી શીખવી પડે તેમ છે.

Some of line of સાંસાઈ We can still relate in our daily life.

I know little about the gir and sasan before reading this novel but reading I can say I have understood gir and sasan !!

નામ અલગ જ લાગે પણ વાત આપણા ગીર ની છે,, સાસાઈ નું પાત્ર તો એવું આલેખ્યું છે કે આવી વ્યક્તિ હોય તો woman empowerment ની વાતો કરવાની જરૂર રહે નહિ.
ધ્રુવ દાદા એ ગીર ની મજા ની વાતો વણી લીધી, પણ સિદી ભાઈઓ ભૂલાયા.
Problem-No Problem યાદ આવે ત્યારે મુસ્કુરાઈ જવાય છે.

ધ્રુવ દાદાની વધુ એક અદ્ભુત નવલકથા. ગીરનું જીવન ખરેખર અહીં દર્શાવ્યું છે એવું જ છે કે નહીં હું જાણતો નથી. પણ આ નવલકથા વાંચીને એ જાણવાની અને જોવાની જીજ્ઞાસા મને થાય છે. આ ઉપરાંત જે માન્યતાઓ સાંભળી છે એને એક અલગ નજરથી જોવાની પ્રેરણા મળી છે. અને ફરી એકવાર ધ્રુવ દાદા કહે છે, તેમ 'નીચેથી ઉપર ગયેલા શાસ્ત્રો'માં થોડી વધારે શ્રધ્ધા જાગી છે.
અહીં ગીરની જ બોલીમાં લખાયેલી વાતો વાર્તા સાથે સીધું કનેક્શન હોય એવી અનુભૂતિ આપે છે.
