1654, Brazil / Amsterdam. After escaping from the Brazilian monastery where she and her younger sister Isobel were forced to work, 16 year old Maria makes the dangerous ocean voyage to Amsterdam where she plans to reunite with Isobel and her parents. But when she arrives she discovers that Isobel's ship still has not arrived and her parents are no where to be found. Taken in by Dutch painter Rembrandt and his family, they encourage Maria to not loose hope that her family will one day be together again.

Great story! Recommended to readers who enjoyed Greene's "Out of Many Waters"

This book was sooooooo amazing! It tells the fictitious story of two Jewish sisters during the Holocaust. They used to live in Europe but they were separated from their family and they were sent to the Carribean (I think it was the Carribean.). To escape Hitler's wrath they had to pretend to be Catholic. They decided to return to Denmark where their parents are but they don't want to be caught. To escape notice, they each go on separate boats knowing that both will be going to Denmark at the same time. The main character is the older sister and when she reaches Denmark she can't find the ship that her sister was on and she finds out it had sunk in a storm. Now she has to set out on her own to find her family. It's a wonderful book and it's very inspiring.

Wonderful middle school historical fiction book about two sister’s escape from the Portuguese Inquisition. The first book of this duo, “Out of Many Waters” was equally enlightening as I was unaware of this part of history.

Maria and her sister Isobel are Jewish children kidnapped from portugal and taken to a monastery to be indoctrinated to Catholicism. Years later they escape to search for their parents who they think have found refuge in Amsterdam. This story follows Maria's journey across the ocean and into more of the unknown.

It was not as good as the first one, but I really liked knowing what happened the the other sister, and how it was resolved.
