Sexy spy thriller that reads like a Bond film… for the female gaze.
He’s the dark knight she can't resist. She’s the crack in his shining armour.
Loyal to king and country, MI6 operative Bishop is the agent you can trust for the toughest missions. But like her chess namesake, she tends to see the world in stark black and white.
When a high-stakes assignment in Hong Kong goes awry, her dark horse of a partner becomes the prime suspect. Bishop must now decide whether to trust him — or eliminate him.
Helix, the Special Ops golden boy, comes with a slight foreign accent and the face and body of a demigod. His undeniable chemistry with Bishop complicates matters, especially when she weaponises seduction to unmask him as a Neo-Soviet double agent.
Between bullets and bureaucracy, their passions spiral into chaos in a safehouse that is anything but. In this deadly game of real-world chess, can Bishop and her knight make it to the endgame?
Samara Knight delivers romance forged through danger, desire, and mind-bending twists. Her stories cut across eras and worlds, but they always center on intense chemistry, moral complexity, and the thrill of secrets unraveling under pressure.
In her previous life, she was a journalist, a travel writer, and a manga artist. She was born on the equator and now call the Canadian prairies home with her found family.

Actual rating: 4.5 ⭐️
What to expect: - Spies/ think CIA - Spice 3.5/5 🌶️ - betrayals/ hidden identity - rivals to lovers - forbidden romance - fast-paced - third person - morally gray mmc
What I liked: Bishop’s gambit was unlike many of the books I read. And honestly I’m quite happy I chose to read it. It was fast-paced and kept me hooked throughout its entirety.
Bishop was a good fmc, she was well versed in her craft and it definitely showed. I found I really appreciated how she acted. Bishop makes mature decisions and acted how I expected someone of her status to. She doesn’t play the dumb, naïve fmc, she takes what she wants and questions everything.
Helix was also a nicely fleshed out character. His backstory is heart-wrenching and makes him feel real. He was jovial and brought youth to the story, making jokes and quips. I also liked the way he treated Bishop, it’s evident that he cares about her.
The overall plot was a bit confusing at times, there were many different names and places making it hard to keep track. It was nicely done albeit, a bit rushed.
What I didn’t like: The PoV in this book changed so quickly and without warning I felt like a got whiplash just reading. I wish that there was more clarity when the PoV was switching.
This book was still very enjoyable! Definitely recommend!
Thank you to BookSirens and and Samara Knight for giving me the ARC for Bishop's Gambit and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
First off, can we talk about how stunning the book cover is? Bishop's Gambit kicks off the Shadows and Secrets series, featuring Luna (aka Bishop) and Alex (aka Helix). I’ve been stuck in a reading slump for a bit, but this book was the perfect refresh. And guess what? There’s an actual plot! The romance heats up at a nice medium pace, and trust me, it definitely delivers. I thought the steam factor was a little lacking, but I actually ended up enjoying it a lot. The action scenes and the political stuff were really well done. Bishop and Helix were a classic case of opposites clashing, each trying to outdo the other. However, things take an interesting turn when they're forced to work together. Their dynamic is captivating, and the characters are crafted with depth.
With that in mind, I'm definitely looking forward to diving into the next book, and Samara Knight has quickly risen to the top of my list of favorite authors.
DNF@ 10%. Too many scene and POV changes this early and I got confused who was who and what was going on which is a shame cause I was pretty excited for a spy thriller.
I must honestly admit that I am not a fan of this genre, but I knew it was a book by one of my favorite authors, so why not. If you haven't read her books Viking Wanderer and The Flowering Knight, I really recommend doing so. And it wasn't disappointing. An exciting story about two characters who move in the world of spies. One is a double agent himself and has actually lost his faith. But he gets to know Luna and they work very well together and both cross a line that you should not cross as partners. Certainly not in the world in which they live and work. Of course, all this creates the necessary tensions and twists in the story that keeps you on your toes. Every page reveals something different. Also the ruthless actions of the organizations involved. Bishop/Luna is a pleasure to read, this character stole my heart. And Helix/Alex, I'm starting to warm up to him there. So I'm ready for the sequel.
I just want to start off and say thank you to Samara Knight and Booksirens for giving me the opportunity to read this book as part of their ARC team.
This is a must read for anyone who loves spies or the show Alias! The tension between the characters was amazing! An enemies to lovers is always a win for me!
Between Bishop’s and Helix’s forbidden love, treachery and betrayal everywhere they go, this is a must read!
"Bishop's Gambit" by Samara Knight is a gripping and strategic thriller that balances suspense with character development. The plot centres around agents Bishop and Helix, exploring their "hate to love" relationship during a high-risk mission. The story unfolds through well-paced twists that keep readers guessing until the end. Knight's vivid descriptions create a strong atmosphere, bringing scenes to life and adding a cinematic quality to the reading experience.
The characters are deeply developed, with their motivations and relationships evolving naturally as the story progresses. While a few moments slow the pacing, these instances enhance the tension and provide insight into the characters' struggles. Overall, "Bishop's Gambit" is fast paced and satisfying read for fans of suspenseful, strategic storytelling that leaves a lasting impact.

Bishop’s Gambit was a fun, quick, spicy read. A team of spies is forced to work together and things get hot real fast. Suddenly, Bishop/Luna learns some new info and then questions her partner’s loyalties. Helix/Alex challenges her and forces her to question her heart.
This book is great if you love:
-spies -the future -love -spice -gray morals
Also, I love that Samara Knight does her own illustrations. That’s always a plus for me! Thank you to Book Sirens and Samara Knight for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the ARC team! Can’t wait to read book 2!!
First of all, THE COVER and character art!!! Samara Knight is sooooo talented. She paints. She plays chess. I should be fangirling about the book alone, I know but I can't help myself. So, BISHOP'S GAMBIT ever met a cool action spy movie and right off the start by just the cover and trailer you know you're in for the coolest ride of your life??? Mehn, I know this was it from the start. I saw the posts and wished with all my heart that I get to read it. And when I expressed my desire to the author, I was still in time for the ARC!!! I couldn't believe my luck.
Its really easy to miss out on creating epic scenes when writing an action novel. Like, it's easy to lose the reader's attention but not Samara. She keeps you engaged and hooked on the action, it's sequence and the character acting it out. It's no exaggeration that it's like a James Bond action spy movie built for the female gaze. My goodness! Bishopppppppppp!!!!
Fast-paced action! Want to find one not-so-cool thing to do to a badass FMC? That thing is when a super handsome MMC spy steals her mission. That's not a cool way to make new spy friends! It's absolutely not the best thing to happen to a spy on a mission she trusts, she has a good hang on. Only to be informed another spy was sent on job to take over on her behalf. Such a bummer! It's worse when said replacement is made your partner with or without your input. Now you're stuck with them for a long mission.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you a spy 'enemies to lovers'. Bishop and Helix took me for a ride, a very interesting ride. I wanted to be team Bishop or just team Helix but I ended becoming Team Lux. I couldn't choose because they were both right in their own way. And...ah, I don't want to give you spoilers. You'll understand what I'm saying after reading the book.
You know how you watch a spy movie and want each character to have their own movie? Yeah, same. Robert Church aka Snatch should have his own book @samaraknight. There, I said it. The banter, oh Lord, the banter! She loves to hate him. He loves getting on her nerves. A win-win? I love it when things come full circle. This was a well-written book. The upcoming books are bound to be fire 🔥.
First of all, you start out right in the action. I mean, it’s pedal to the metal the whole way through this book- I could’ve easily finished this in a day if I wasn’t so busy and trust me.. I WANTED TO!
This book was just a lot of fun.. so much action, and sooooooo much corruption. I’m a huge fan of spy films and books…I mean, what’s not to love about them? But this book felt like so much more than just a regular spy book with a single objective. You have mystery, plot twists, complex feelings, and bitter betrayals.
The author did a fantastic job of detailing the politics between each agency and the breakdown into how each played a role in the overall dynamics for the book. There’s so much I would like to talk about but they would border on “spoilers” territory which I do not provide in reviews so just hear me when I say- read this book. If you like politics(not the boring kind, the interesting/twisted kind), spies, books that make you question if you actually know what’s going to happen, books that make you question everyone’s loyalty, books that have incredible character development and provide a depth to the characters that makes you feel for even the worst of them at times… Read. The. Damn. Book.
I obviously cannot end this review without mentioning the 🌶️ … because let me tell ya, the spice was SPICIN’. In my opinion, It didn’t feel like too much at all. I mean literally it felt like the absolute perfect amount of spice to make you feel like you’ve had just enough but also could read some more 🥵
Yeah, overall I’d say I was really impressed with this book. The details allowed me to fully delve into Bishop’s world and at times the descriptive writing made this feel like a movie. I could physically feel the emotion portrayed in the book and visualize scenes fully which is what elevated this book so much for me. The plot and pacing were a 10/10 in my opinion and I really enjoyed the case reports that popped up throughout the book! Highly highly recommend this book for a quick and fun read!!
Thank you to the author, Samara Knight, for my ARC of this book. This is, as always, my honest opinion!! ✨🩷
This is my first book reading about spies & international conspiracies so bear with me lol I truly enjoyed this story because so much is happening at the same time that just glues you in from the beginning. Helix & Gambit they are basically enemies that end up working together on an assignment, but different things start to unfold & loyalties start to get questioned. This book was very interesting and honestly I wasn't expecting the plot twist. I love how Gambit & Helix worked together, how their friendship developed, their chemistry, their banter.. loved this story & can't wait to read what's next!
Spice level: 🌶🌶
Thanks to Author Samara Knight & BookSirens for providing me with an ARC copy 💕
this book was very good! It had my interest from page one. it will hook you and not let you go! I love that this is a spy book but it had so much action in it and it didn't stop. I really like how the story brought the two main characters together. the dynamic between Helix and Bishop is so real. I enjoyed the emotions of this book as well. one moment I was happy, sad and on the edge of my seat wanting to know more about what is going to happen. I really enjoyed this book. this is a must read for sure!! the writing was so good.
Omg!!! This was outside of the genre I typically read and I LOVED it. Samara did a great job with writing all the different spy elements as if it were a movie. The tension between the characters was soooooooo good. Bishop is a badass. This book gives me Alias vibes and I am here for it. Can’t wait for the next book!!!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you to the author and publisher for this ARC.
This book has me hooked on the spy genre. It is well written, and researched. I loved the banter and love-hate relationship between Bishop and Helix. It is reminiscent of the relationship between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in Mr. And Mrs. Smith. Bishop is a strong, no nonsense FMC and Helix is a cheeky, lovable pain in the 🍑.
If you're enthralled by spies , futuristic, worlds, passionate romance, and moral ambiguity, this book is an absolute must read. Not to mention Samara Knights artwork elevates the narrative
Interesting and complex spy drama with romantic interlude and a surprise plot twist. I would have liked if there were more detail in-between the transitions of the scenes to help the reader to follow the story
This spy romance novel stands out for its depth and attention to detail, offering much more than just a superficial love story. The intricate world of espionage is woven expertly into the plot, bringing authenticity and tension to the story. The heroine is a capable and confident special agent—not your typical naive character. She’s intelligent, athletic, and knows how to leverage her appearance, but she’s also kind-hearted and always considers others.
Her love interest, the mysterious male lead, is an ambiguous figure. Throughout the novel, his allegiances remain unclear, keeping you on edge. Both characters excel at their spy craft, and their dynamic is a highlight of the book.
The action scenes are gripping and realistic—whether it’s a boat explosion, a gunfight, or a high-speed car chase, the intensity pulls you in. The unexpected twists only add to the excitement, and the pacing is just right to keep you hooked.
If you're a fan of spy novels but new to romance, or if you're into romance but unfamiliar with espionage, this book strikes a perfect balance between both genres. The romance between the two leads is as captivating as the action, with some steamy moments thrown in. The characters are not only well-developed but also have a great sense of humor, making them easy to root for.
All in all, it's an engaging, well-paced read, and I can’t wait for part two!
Intriguing Plot and Characters, But Not Quite My Cup of Tea
"Bishop's Gambit" by Samara Knight is the first book in the "Shadows & Secrets" series. It was one of my most anticipated reads, and while I can appreciate the effort and creativity that went into writing this spy romance, it didn’t live up to my expectations.
The premise of a spy romance is captivating and offers plenty of excitement. The story maintains a good pace, and the suspense elements are well-executed, keeping readers on their toes. Although the characters may lack a bit of depth, they are nonetheless likeable, and their interactions are engaging for the most part.
While the writing is competent, and the author's command of language is evident, it occasionally felt stiff and flamboyant, making it challenging to fully immerse in the story. Additionally, the near-future political and espionage scenarios, though intriguing, often seemed improbable considering current political realities, further hindering immersion. Despite these challenges, I give it 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.
Overall, "Bishop's Gambit" offers a blend of romance and espionage that will likely appeal to fans of both genres. Though it didn't fully capture my interest, I recognize that it could be an enjoyable read for others who appreciate this type of storytelling.
Bishop's gambit was unlike many of the books I read, being more technical and spy based. But honestly I’m glad I picked it up! It was detailed and you can tell the author has put a lot of work into research and development. As such, Bishop was a well developed character, who is an expert in her field and acts with the maturity you’d expect. She’s a strong, confident role model who doesn’t accept the status quo, and challenges the world around her. Helix offered some joviality and relief to the story, being young and bringing fun to the situation. His backstory is truly heart-wrenching, adding dimension to a character that could have otherwise been superficial. The world building had a lot of depth, bringing so many places to life as we travelled through them. My only issue was that at times the perspective changed suddenly, but this was easily picked up again and didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book! Definitely recommend!

Bishop's Gambit is a spy romance that takes place in a future where the political landscape is a bit different from now.
Bishop is the codename for the FMC, who has been an MI6 agent for around 5 years. She is sent to Hong Kong to look into the deaths of other MI6 agents and is partnered with the enigmatic Helix. Even though they don't know if they can trust each other, sparks still fly (figuratively and literally!)
There were so many twists and turns that I had no idea who the bad guys really were! Bishop's Gambit was a thoroughly entertaining read and I look forward to the next book in the series.
The world’s elite super spies go head-to-head in this fast-paced drama. Bishop is tasked to find out why assets are dying in Hong Kong. She is teamed up with a special ops agent, Helix who is a wild card at best. There are all kinds of players at work trying to sway the Chinese election, and they are put right in the middle of the rivalry. Great first book in the series. If you like spy thrillers, this is for you. Thanks to BookSiren for the ARC of this book.
I couldn’t finish this unfortunately. I tried SUPER HARD! With my dyslexia and having a hard time comprehending (maybe it just me) concept really good, the talking and dialogue great! But all the different names and how many breaks are between chapters and the switch with characters I was having a hard time following.
This book was like a movie, so much happened in it! The characters are well developed, the world building is also very nicely done. The chemistry between characters also jumps off the pages. Definitely recommended
Reads like a movie! Fun spy story but I disliked the way the spice was written. The author mentioned it being a graphic novel at first, I think I would have enjoyed it more that way.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book is a romantic reimagining of an espionage graphic novel. And it reads like a graphic novel in book form. I am not connecting with the story or characters. Nor am I feeling any chemistry between Helix and Bishop.
This is young, modern spy literature at its best! The chemisty between the two main characters is breathtaking, and the plot twists kept me on my toes. Bishop and Helix are truly worth my while! Who needs James Bond when you can have these two?
I really enjoyed it. The banter between the two, Helix and Bishop was so fun to read I was giggling among other emotions… I wish there was a little more banter as I love banter. Was a slow burn and start, but it really kicked off later into the book.
A very well put together story that's a little confusing at times. First off all I would like to note that I very much enjoyed this book. The characters are strong and unwavering, the plot is solid and the balance between mystery, action and spice is well thought out. However I found it is not a story that you can read without being 100% present. The quick/unannounced changes in pov between more than 2 characters and the elaborate and endless list of places and names, make it hard to track at times. The mmc alone already has 3 different names, which are all used side by side. This made me have to re-read some chapters or lay the story down to continue later when I was less distracted. This is something that I rarely come across in my reading and the main reason why I'm ranking it a 3 star read. Still I would like to thank the author for granting me this ARC.
