Fort Bender #2

Sunshine with You

Rate this book
Ashlie Willis is a disappointment. At least, that’s what she tells herself. Failed career, bad relationships, life—the former teacher can’t seem to get anything right. People pleasing is a tough habit to break, and pretending is easier than facing her fears. The only one asking what she really wants is her best friend, Hunter.

Hunter Jackson doesn’t get attached. The data analyst has a new fling each week and bolts at the first sign of drama. No relationships. No feelings. No exceptions, aside from Ashlie—the one woman he’s allowed close enough to matter.

They’ve only ever been friends…except for the one night they don’t talk about. Family obligations send them back to Fort Bender, a place steeped in memories they promised to forget. With no more distractions, and personal demons pushed aside, their pretense crumbles into a night of noncommittal passion.

But when a new suitor for Ashlie turns out to be the perfect match, fear and desire collide. Ashlie clings to the ruse of their past, while Hunter can only see one her.

When the line between love and friendship blurs, the very things they’ve been running from may be exactly what they need.

First off: This review is not a positive one, it's not even constructive criticism, it's just criticism and me being a little mean about the story, so if you are the author, please, please, please, I beg of you, don't read this. This review is not meant for you in any way shape or form. Your work has value and many people enjoy it. You deserve the praise and to continue to write with joy.

I got this as an ARC, so thank you to the author and to Luna Literary for it!

Now, onto my review:

I fought to not DNF this hard.

The writing, for starters, was not bad, but it was repetitive. The same sentences were repeated multiple times throughout the book, and by that I mean a noticeable amount. The inability to write ‘No’ instead of ‘Naw’ and having Ash say “Boy, if…” “Boy, don’t…” and so on.

The characters…

They were twenty-six years old and I’m more mature at 23, I’ll do you one better, I WAS more mature at 16 when I walked up to the guy I had a crush on and told him, or at 18 when I told my mom I did not want to go into science but languages, or at 21 when a situationship got icky and a conversation needed to happen… it’s really not that hard to communicate, and I’m *not* using the term communicate as a “bare your soul”, state what you want, and go from there. You want more than friends, say it, you don’t, say it, you changed your mind, guess what…SAY IT. (I’m getting so worked up about fictional people it’s not even normal)

Hunter was in love with Ash for years but didn’t make a move, not once because…he couldn’t give her what she needed: a relationship. What I gather from that is that he just didn’t want to change (minimal change in reality because they were missing physical romance and one or two more dates a week to be a couple for real). I understand his past can damage his relationships but telling me that in five (5) years he hasn’t made up his mind, not only that, but he still kept up his fuck boy ways? Not the best MMC in my opinion.

Ash… was a people-pleaser doormat (so sorry to be harsh). She knew what she wanted in all honesty, but was letting other people have a say in how her life was going to play out. Not only that, but she was asking for advice on her romantic life and then getting defensive about it. And then she had a crush on Hunter but the whole Theo?Trevor? (sorry if it’s the wrong name but ugh) situation going on… I just couldn’t fully empathize with her or her situation. I understand self-doubt like the best of them, but she was putting me, Hunter, and that guy through the wringer. Her character pissed me off and from the moment she started “dating” T-man while “dating” Hunter she lost me completely.

Willa was the highlight for me. Calling on Hunter’s BS while looking out for her sister…now that’s a good thing!

Kayla was a saint, mind you, giving pep talks and support on her wedding day after she had issues herself.

Hunter’s mom was the worst thing to ever happen to me and I don’t care about no redeeming arc or anything. She just doesn’t deserve her children or my forgiveness.

The first impression was too much for me to get over, even with the change and growth happening with the characters. In the end, I’m happy they got together but I don’t think I’ll reread this book.

I went into this book blind, and hadn’t read book 1 of the series. The author did a great job giving the background of the other characters so I didn’t feel like I was missing a lot.

I enjoyed Hunter and Ashlie’s story. I appreciated the anxiety/panic attack representation and that I was told in a realistic format.

Friends to lovers isn’t my favorite trope but I really did love this story. A few times I wanted smack the MCs in the head for the lack of communication 😂

this book was so good! I loved how meant to be Hunter and Ashlie were, even when Ashlie herself wasn’t sure. They just seemed to fit so well together, and I absolutely adored the way Layna James was able to capture the difference between Ashlie’s relationship with Trevor and her relationship with Hunter without making Trevor seem like a terrible person.

I know it looks like I took a lot of time to get into this book, but about 1/4 of my way thru I had to read a 400 page book for class :( if that hadn’t gotten in the way, I would have devoured this book so fast! I was surprised that there weren’t any points where I felt like the story hit a rut or was slowing down; I always wanted to read more

Thank you so much to the Luna Literary team for the ARC!

ARC Review: Sunshine With You by Layna James

Okayyy, so let me tell y’all about Sunshine With You, the second book in the Fort Bender Series. This was my first read by her and babyyy, it will not be my last. I got my hands on this ARC and whew—this story was beautifully written and full of heart with the perfect lil' dash of drama.

This book had everything I needed:

Solid friendships that feel like home.

Just enough spice to make you fan yourself.

Some “wait, what?!” moments.

Random giggles.

Classic sunshine x grumpy energy.

And plenty of “Girl, forget them folks—including Grandpa! Choose you!” moments!

Ashlie, our leading lady, is that girl. Small town roots, L.A. glow-up, degree in hand—but sis is out here ignoring every flag thrown her way. Red and green. Her anxiety? Whew, it’s got her in a chokehold. She lives in her head rent-free, carrying the weight of her family’s expectations, all while lying to herself about not being in love with her best friend’s brother.

Now Hunter? This man right here. Smart, fine, got jokes for days—and he’s been Ashlie’s homie for five years because of his sister Kayla. But the whole time? Man’s been head over heels for Ashlie, just playing it cool. He’s fighting demons of his own but always, always shows up for her. Calms her storms like only he can.

But the gag is—they both suck at relationships and are top-tier actors when it comes to pretending they’re not in love with each other.

Then boom—enter Trevor. He’s feeling Ashlie heavy, and while he's a vibe and all… he ain’t Hunter. Let’s just keep it real. Hunter’s sitting back playing his role until he finally says, nah, I’m done frontin’ and everything shifts!

Oh, and did I mention they’re all in the same wedding?! Yeah. It’s giving messy and magical.

I’ve already said too much, but just know this—Sunshine With You is that book. If you haven’t read Some Kind of Forever (book one), go run it up on KU then follow up with this immediately after!

Rated a strong 4 stars from me. This one’s full of soul, sass, and everything we love about a well-written Black romance. Layna James did that!

This was such a great read!

The book had lots of very cute, heart-warming parts as well as lots of laughs. Like just some truly hilarious interactions where I was laughing out loud - I love Ash and how kind of sassy she is. It fits with Hunter’s slightly cocky but sweet ways perfectly.

There’s a few times where I want to shake them both to get their shit together - so do the side characters, to be fair - but it all lends to building up the story between them well.

There is a bit of a love triangle in this, though I’d say it didn’t feel too serious. I also read book 3 before this book 2 so that could have mellowed me about the whole thing. The parts with the other guy felt kind of unimportant so I wasn’t particularly interested in those bits but they were still fine to read.

If a love triangle is something that bugs you then yeah not for you but for me it was pretty much a non-issue; it’s pretty clear how the book was going to go in relation to that so I didn’t get worked up over it.

This book also made me a bit emotional, especially some parts around family relationships. There’s also themes of working through anxieties and insecurities and growing as a person that were done well.

There is some nice open door spice in this book as well but not tons, which is a good balance.

Reading this series in order probably provides the best experience as the characters are all tightly interrelated, but it was doable reading this having only read book 3 before (I’m reading this in backward order, don’t ask why, I have no idea 😂).

I recommend this for a nice, solid romance read.

** I received a ARC of this book to review **
This is the second book in the Fort Bender series (but can also be read as a standalone) I am fairly new to this author and was instantly drawn by the cover and then synopsis. This story was written sooo beautifully 🌻🍯🐻

This book is for anyone who enjoys:
💛 Friends to Lovers
💛 Playful banter and giggles
💛 A bit of spice and everything nice 😉
💛 Praise kink
💛 Sunshine and Grumpy
💛 Found family

Ashlie is me, I am Ashlie. She was written so well and relatable and as someone who ignores red flags and also "gravitates towards sh*tty men like they're the center of the universe," I kept shouting "PREACH" at my Kindle, lol. I felt like @laynajameswrites was speaking to me with her words. Ashlie lives with anxiety and has a terrible case of people-pleasing-- the pressure of it all made her feel like a disappointment to her parents who wanted her to continue the family legacy. At the end of the day, Ashlie is a hopeless romantic who wants to find her person, ignoring all signs pointing to her best friend's brother 🤭

Hunter, is a non-committal playboy who is rarely seen without a woman on his arm. Through his sister, Kayla, he and Ashlie have been best friends for five years. For five years, he's been in denial about being in love with Ashlie. Maybe it's due to some battles and trauma he's faced? 🤔

Because of his denial about his feelings, Ashlie falls from his grasp and into the arms of Trevor, a walking green flag. While trying to fix her past issues of choosing the wrong guy, she keeps seeing Trevor because he's a safe option. Ashlie realizes he's nice and all but there is no spark, that he is not... Hunter.

Okaayyyy Book Besties, I've said enough. This book had me in my feelings, made me laugh, made me swoon, and made me anxious. Check out 'Some Kind of Forever' (Book 1: Kayla & Chase) on KU while Sunshine with You will be available Feburary 27th ✨🌻💛🐻🍯

Love a good friends to lovers
So much will they won’t they when we all know they will lol

Many tropes in this one
Best friends to lovers
Best friends brother
Second chance
A Love triangle that could have been a menage if I were reading a different genre lol

There were some funny moments but being angry Irrationally jealous and angry of old dates kinda made go, ick. But I know I’m in the minority. I’ve never felt jealous when it comes to my partner

Thanks Luna Literary for giving me the opportunity to ARC read this title

Sunshine and Spice! Wow Layna James wrote a helluva book! I was lucky enough to get an ARC for this book and was not disappointed. This is the second book in the Fort Bender Series we get to catch up with characters from the first book while we dive into Hunter and Ashlie’s Story. Hunter is the hilarious playboy MMC that has a boatload of feelings for his bestie Ashlie the FMC. Hunter is dealing with his past, his feelings for Ashlie and trying to convince her of how amazing she is and that their relationship is beyond friendship. Ashlie is amazing but her anxiety, overthinking and history of horrible relationships has her second guessing her life path and the possibility of Hunter being more than friends also while dating Trevor who she feels is the perfect guy. She knows Trevor is great but he’s no Hunter. This book is wonderfully written it has spice, strong yet flawed characters, angst and a story that keeps you engaged and wanting to know what’s going to happen next. I highly recommend this book it’s amazing!

•ARC REVIEW•
I love going into books blind! I’m a sucker for a good cover, tropes that stick out, and my comfy genres. Sunshine With You hit all my boxes before I even read the full summary, so I was excited to sign up for an ARC!
This is my first ever ARC review & I’m really grateful to have gotten chosen 💛

I haven’t read many friends-to-lovers romances, but I can honestly say Ashlie & Hunter’s story is one I won’t ever forget. From their banter (we LOVE good banter), to the teasing, to the angst and the spicy scenes - there was hardly anything I didn’t like!

The plot was straightforward but still had notes of drama and plot twists to keep it interesting!

I really didn’t mind some of the unconventional aspects of the writing, i.e. like Hunter’s “nah” vs “no” lingo. It helped me clearly hear his voice & his mannerisms throughout the book, and I liked how it added a different way of conveying that.

The way all of the couples’ love were portrayed had me kicking my feet and giggling Every. Other. Page, I kid you not. And it read so easy and smoothly (conversation, and plot-wise) I didn’t want to put it down.
Not only that, but touching on deep & heartfelt topics like anxiety, people-pleasing, abandonment, and watching the characters not only acknowledge those things but work & grow through them? Beautiful to see!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 / 5 Stars from me!! I actually read this series out of order, so I’m off to read Some Kind Of Forever, Book #1 in this Fort Bender Series.

Our MMC – he is a funny, smart "playboy," who has been a half decade long BFF of Ashlie (secretly but not secretly in love with her) who has Ashlie's back no matter what.

Trevor:
Our "trouble maker" who swoops in and has Ashlie falling for him...but is that who she really wants?

I loved this story. Ashlie and Hunter’s story was one that made you feel like you were watching a really good romcom. The banter is great, the intimate scenes were so well done, and just the realness of the issues they both were dealing with is so relatable. As someone who struggles with anxiety too, I felt myself teetering on the line of being frustrated with Ashlie and completely getting where she was coming from. I really appreciated Hunter’s growth, and even the relationship between Chase and Kayla was so important to this story. This was my first Layna story, and I was very satisfied with it. Thank you to Layna and Luna Literary for this ARC.

ARC review

First, I would like to thank the author and Luna Literary Management for this ARC and their trust. I started this story with a lot of fear because my last readings of Brother's best friend, friends to lovers were not the best... But I liked this story for different reasons. To start, I liked the dynamic of Ashlie and Hunter as we immediately read that they have mutual feelings for each other, the slow burn romance for which we want to continue our reading without letting go of the protagonists. The sentences have beautiful structures like not too long or too short for nothing. The theme of mental health in black people is important for our community who does not like to discuss this subject in our entourage. On February 27, go get this book in ebook or paperback, you will love this black romance of the best friend of our best friend. PSA: Hunter is too beautiful, I am in shock

Perfect Sunshine!! 🫠🌻

OMG! I never thought I’d love anyone more than Chase & Kayla, but this Fort Bender series has me in a chokehold. Hunter x Ashlie are so loveably perfect for another. Their banter, sass, silliness, and even their flaws. There was no shortage of raw vulnerability on every page and I soaked it up like a sponge. The steamy scenes were perfectly crafted and matched this pair so seamlessly. Well done all around!

This author is now a certified auto buy for me! I am looking forward to what’s next in the series.

This heartfelt romance perfectly blends friendship, tension, and just the right amount of spice. Ashlie battles anxiety and family expectations while suppressing feelings for her best friend, Hunter, the charming playboy who’s secretly loved her for years. Their slow burn romance is filled with angst, humor, and undeniable chemistry. When Ashlie tries to move on, Hunter is finally forced to confront his feelings, leading to a satisfying and swoon worthy shift. With the perfect mix of emotion and romance, this is a must add to your TBR!

🌶️🌶️

Ashlie and Hunter have the most beautiful friendship. I appreciated the authentic depiction of these characters and the dynamic between them. This whole book was a beautiful rollercoaster of will they or won’t they that ended with some necessary vulnerability from both characters. ❤️

I was hooked! I remember being on chapter 3 and laughing out loud. There’s so much to the book from the mental representation to the family drama. I love Ashlie’s sassy personality. I was swooping over Hunter! His soft side toward Ashlie is so sweet. And the playful banter between them is amusing. Such a great read!

ARC REVIEW 4.5⭐️

Oh man I was hooked from page one!!! I’m normally a read one book at a time girly so I had to put my other book down and finish this first. The tension and longing had me turning pages and turning pages!!! I loved their friendship and banter, but babyyy a connection is a connection you shouldn’t ignore. You got to test the waters sometimes. Ashlie struggles with anxiety and I think we all can relate to that. Hunter is all about Ashlie and gotta love a man that all about you, I also loved his growth in the story.
Overall, I LOVED IT & would recommend!!! I will have to go back and read book 1, Some Kind of Forever

I was lucky enough to get an ARC and really enjoyed it. This is the second book in the Fort Bender Series, and it follows Hunter and Ashlie’s story. Hunter is the playful, charming guy who has deep feelings for his best friend Ashlie. She’s dealing with anxiety, overthinking, and past relationship struggles, which makes her unsure about taking things further—especially while dating Trevor, who seems perfect but isn’t Hunter.

The book is well-written with just the right mix of emotion, relatable characters, and a little bit of spice. It kept me interested the whole way through. I definitely recommend it!

ARC review

If you are a lover of friends to lover's trope then check this book out. I was able to read an ARC thank you Layna James, however this is my honest review.

what I love about this story was the mutual pining for each other, both main characters believing the other doesn't see them that way or the other person doesn't feel the same. I also love that both of them was opposites in how they view relationships which makes them coming together even more enjoyable. I love the friendship banter and relationship from the early pages of the book. Both characters had trauma and issues they had to work through and even though it took longer for the female to get there I still found it beautiful.

the book itself was well written, love the touch of love triangle, and I enjoyed all the side characters

Fan favorites Ashlie and Hunter return in the second book in the Fort Bender series in which they have to decide whether they want to be more than just friends or not.

Ashlie Willis feels like the world's worst failure. She quit teaching after a mental breakdown and none of her relationships seem to amount to anything meaningful. Trying to please all of the people in her life has her burning the candle at both ends, but at least she can be herself around her best friend, Hunter. He may be a skirt-chaser, but he is a loyal bestie. Hunter Jackson doesn't get too attached to anything in his life. After his mom left his family, Hunter secretly fears that he will be abandoned, so he runs away from everything to avoid stop anyone from ever leaving him again. Ashlie and Hunter have promised that they'll never do anything to jeopardize their friendship, but their feelings towards one another start to get complicated when they return back to Fort Bender, a town that is laden with memories of that one night they don't speak of. When the line between romance and friendship blur, Ashlie and Hunter must reevaluate what they really desire in life.

In the first book in this series, Hunter and Ashlie were my favorite characters. When I was told that the second book featured their romance, I was very excited for more of their content. One of my favorite parts about them is their witty banter, which this book is filled of. Obviously, these two have their own baggage, but I wasn't expecting it to be as heavy as it is. This romance is stunning because it doesn't shy away from all the self-doubts that flood anxiety ridden people and showcases that we all have our personal traumas that cause us to treat people less than fair.

I relate to Ashlie so hard, and it's not just because we share the same name. Ashlie is an anxious, people pleaser who heavily feels the burden of everyone in her life's expectations. She often feels like she is a failure in every aspect, and she feels unworthy of being loved. I'm definitely not in as bad of a rut as she is, but I can definitely relate to all the stress that she carries around and the belief that she must please everyone in order to be a success. I've definitely had a panic attack a time or two due to the unknowns that the future holds and often feel that my boyfriend deserves better than the loser that is me. Much like Hunter, he has to constantly remind me that I am good enough and that I am loved unconditionally.

Hunter is confident in his ways but constantly haunted by the traumas of his past. This brings another level of pain to their relationship that they both have to deal with and work through. My mom may not have abandoned my family, but I have my own fair share of childhood traumas that affect my romantic relationship, too. Both Ashlie and Hunter have such relatable trials and tribulations that it was hard for my heart not to go out to these two. I was rooting for these two to figure out their garbage so that they could be happy together.

When I say that I highlighted the heck out of this book, I'm not saying that lightly. There are dozens of passages in this book that I highlighted due to how much it felt like the thought was coming out of my own head. This book made me feel seen in an eerily creepy way, which also made reading it quite cathartic in a way. Additionally, there are a ton of quotes in this book are hilarious, which is also a plus.

Ashlie and Hunter also have really strong chemistry in this book. They have been friends for over five years, so they have plenty of inside jokes and know each other quite well. It made shipping them together a natural choice, despite the fact that the seem polar opposite at first sight. Due to this, their physical chemistry didn't seem to come out of nowhere like it usually does for me. This book had some scenes that are way more sensual than I'm used to, but they didn't make me overly uncomfortable. I want to make it very clear that this book is definitely OPEN DOOR, if you catch my drift. I was certainly blushy while reading the last fourth of this book. I don't usually love steamy books this much, so I wanted to make this very clear.

Kayla and Chase, the characters from "Some Kind of Forever," are also super important in this story. They are planning their wedding, and it is awesome to see how happy they are together even after their book ends. We get a bit of a story after the story, which I love. Despite it being such a happy time in their lives, Kayla is super worried about taking their relationship to the next level. Her and Chase have been dating for over five years, but that doesn't ease her anxiety of becoming a wife. I am definitely a ways from marrying anyone, but I know that the months leading up to my wedding are going to be some of the most stressful moments of my life. Remember people, COMMUNICTION fixes most issues (or at least remedies them and makes them manageable *wink wink, nudge nudge*). My heart really goes out to Kayla, and I'm glad that I could relate more to her in this book than I did in the first one.

We go on quite the journey with this friend group, and I'm excited to see who the third book in the series follows. My bet would be on Trevor, who I somehow haven't mentioned yet. He is the competing love interest in this book who makes up the third piece of the love triangle that is included. Seeing him get redemption would be nice, especially if he ends up with Ashlie's sister, Willis. Otherwise, seeing Artemis' love story play out could also be neat.

Overall, "Sunshine With You" is a romance that dives into all the complicated parts of romantic relationships, especially when one doesn't feel worthy of being loved. Yes, the dialogue is super witty, and the romance can be swoonworthy, but the depth of the characters is truly what makes the story so amazing. I relate so much to Ashlie, especially her people pleasing ways and anxiety ridden mind. I can't wait to see what else Fort Bender has to offer me; I will definitely be keeping my eyes out for the next novel in this series!

Received an ARC copy and this was my first book by Layna James. I really enjoyed reading Hunter and Ashlie’s story. It was nice to see someone in their 20’s trying to figure life out because we all go through a rough patch. I think seeing how Ashlie’s anxiety crippled her from going after the dream job she really wanted was so relatable. Often we are afraid to do things that will make us happy. But Hunter being her best friend and always by her side, he encouraged when she felt like she couldn’t do it. I felt they balanced each other out throughout the entire book. Hunter may have been a player but he was always very serious about Ashlie! It was beautiful to see their story unfold. Caged feelings that say dormant for years and trying not to tell your best friend you’re in love with them is hard to keep a secret. Loved the banter I was def cracking up when Hunter would make jokes and all the nicknames he came up for with Ashlie 😂😂😂 overall a great read and can’t wait for Willa’s story!

(arc review)

Give me a second chance romance & I’ll eat it up! But this one? Just wow! Layna went to work with this ONE!
All I have to see if, HUNTER THE MAN THAT YOU ARE!

If you love that “Fuck It” micro trope, this is the book for you!

“As long as I’m breathing, I’ll never be done with you. With us. Life without you, even for a month, has been absolute hell.” -Hunter 🥹

Let me just say Ashlie & Hunter just belong together! They just do! The book follows Ashlie & Hunter who are bestfriends who share a complicated history, including a night they choose not to discuss. As they return to their hometown of Fort Bender, unresolved feelings resurface but they’re scared it can ruin their friendship. Ashley struggles with anxiety & people pleasing but Hunter? SWOON but he also has abandonment issues since his mom left after the divorce.

I’ve never met two people who are obviously meant for each other pretend like they’re not or try to hide it😩! I was so glad when they took that extra step & it gave Hunter the push to actually try!! I did love how he told Ashlie to keep doing what makes her feel good (dating Trevor). Hunter pulled out all the stops, planning the dates & trying to become a better person for Ashlie. “The lengths I’m willing to go just for a chance with this woman are growing longer by the minute.”

Hunter has always been Ashlie’s number one supporter. When she didn’t want to apply to grad school, he told her it was ok & even helped her stand up to her parents about it. Encouraged her to go back to swimming because it made it feel better. “You deserve someone who wants your happiness as much as their own, Ash.”

This was my first Layna James book & I couldn’t but this down from the time I started it! I will definetly be reading more of her books!

Quotes:
“Bruh, I can’t breathe. Can’t think. It’s been weeks, and I still see her smile every time I close my eyes.” -Hunter

“Ashlie, you are a part of me, forever. You have my heart. You are my heart, my sunshine gleaming out of the darkness. -Hunter

Thank you to the author @laynajameswrites and @lunaliterary.management for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Out now and available through Kindle Unlimited!

This is the second book in a standalone interconnected romance series. It’s told from the third person from both Ashlie and Hunter’s perspective.

Ashlie has anxiety and a habit of being with inconsiderate men. Hunter is a playboy who learns his estranged mother is coming for the holidays.

Early on, we learn that one of them is aware of their own feelings. We see them both reminisce and act on their mutual attraction absentmindedly. I loved the pacing of their relationship and watching it grow and develop as they recognize what’s been there.

This is a love triangle and I have no notes on how it was used in this story. I loved it.

I enjoyed the side characters too. All the advice they gave was relevant and full of wisdom. I want to go back to the first one so I can stay in this universe a little longer. I hope Willa gets her own book.

There’s a third act breakup, but I think it makes sense for the story. At times Ashlie was doing the most, but in the end she recognizes it, which leveled out my annoyance and made me feel the story came full circle. Both characters displayed different levels of growth in the end. They’re loved by each other as they continue to work through their issues.

Tropes include
🍯 Friends to Lovers
🍯 Mutual Pining
🍯 Best Friend’s Brother
🍯 Love Triangle
🍯 Just for tonight/ fuck it / it’s always been you
🍯 Reformed Player
🍯 Anxiety Rep
🍯 Dating Bet

OVERALL

Overall, I give this a 5 out of 5 stars. There’s so many moments in the book where I was cheesing and laughing. At the same time, the inside jokes and teasing are balanced with real deep-seated issues and real advice. It’s definitely a favorite!

Ashlie and Hunter are BEST friends. They have weekly lunch not-dates, they communicate daily, they trust and rely on each other for anything, and sometimes they have not-so-friendly thoughts about each other that turn into actions we shall never ever speak of again. They can’t be together because…well I’d give you a good reason but not even they can think of one that their friends and family (and even strangers) won’t dispute. Hunt seems confident in a he can get anything that he desires way (well almost anything) and Ash is riddled with anxieties (girl, me too!) that have her feeling like despite all her accomplishments she is floundering. While working very hands-on and behind the scenes together for their sister/best friends wedding, the two must also focus independently on themselves and their other relationships and bet on each other to face down their fears. But can they look at each other in a new light and be vulnerable enough to find love?

All the sunflowers for Sunshine With You! Talk about characters that are so real and willing to put in ALL the work and an incredible supporting cast to boot. I want to be in this friend group ASAP and give both Hunter and Ashlie the most uncomfortably long lasting but still somehow comforting hugs because they are really just trying their best to figure everything out as life and love get increasingly complicated. I, too, only get by with a little (OK a lot) of help from my friends! I had such a hard time with this review because I loved the story and so very many details and moments and conversations that happened that I was anxious with worry that I wouldn’t do it justice. Layna, when you decide your next WIP is ready I will be standing in line to eat it up immediately, risk of heartburn (and ache) be damned!

Thank you to the author, Layna James, and Luna Literary for the ARC and opportunity to review!

I cannot talk about this book enough, first and foremost Ashlie and Hunter story in the second novel in the Fort Bender series, however it can be read as a standalone….

I fell in love reading about Ashlie and Hunter love story blossoming!💛 Firstly, the representation with Ashlie’s character having anxiety/ and panic attacks as well as thoroughly written and portrayed well in the book 📖. When reading it made me feel more connected due to having connections that were relatable in every page turn. Ashlie also had to deal with family expectations and her own emotions so that was also playing a part on her emotions as well. Now, on to Hunter he definitely he is definitely our playboy, who has green flag and some opposing qualities that progressed in the storylines but nothing to much, however he had feelings for Ashlie and the slow burn of their relationship especially when mutually building more and more over time had me in love, and had the anticipation in each page, each chapter build worth the read😁! Now, let me just say the banter, the yearning, angst and the funny humor between Ashlie and Hunter was such cute communication between the two that showed real life dynamics as well as funny moments to laugh and reminisce about 🥹.

THANK YOU, SO MUCH LAYNA JAMES FOR GIFTING ME THIS AMAZING READ📖!!Now, may we also discuss, how Sunshine With You ☀️ is a story that highlights the ups and downs of life, and how relationships come and go and how maturity is to live, it’s an ongoing habit and struggle in life. However, evolution in life is something to live and learn. The story of Ashlie and Hunters highlighter immaturity/maturity as well as patterns of two people having to grow maturely and individually in order to better for themselves as well as to be better together ❣️

3 1/2 Stars

This is the second book in the Fort Bender series and while it is a stand alone, it might be better to read the first one first. I love the style of writing that Layna James has, but I have to admit this was a hard book to get into at times. While I do understand it touches on several topics people have in their lives like anxiety, people pleasing, etc., sometimes it can be overwhelming in a book. Almost like it is dragging it down a little, possibly causing you to put it down as a DNF or skipping over the pages. Now there is a lot of spiceness in this which I did love and with the descriptions I can see the characters in my head. So it definitely can be a book that you enjoy reading.

Ashlie Willis keeps falling for the guy with all the red flags with this idea in her head she can change him. That idea coincides with this belief that she needs to please everyone out there. Especially her family as her parents want her to carry on their legacy but she doesn’t. Then in walks Trevor, he is a green flag all over, but maybe too much of a green flag, too safe. But Ashlie is not willing to take another risk, even if it means she is in full denial that her one true love is Hunter, her best friend’s brother.

Hunter Jackson is a playboy, flitting from woman to woman, not wanting a serious commitment at all. He likes the idea of not worrying about anything, even hurting someone’s heart to keep his own safe. But when the one woman he has had a crush on for years has a perfect man in her life, Hunter realizes maybe it is time to realize that the spark they kept hidden needs to come out now before its too late.

Thank you to Luna Literary and Layna James for the ARC of this book for my honest opinion.

At the heart of “Sunshine With You” are Ashlie and Hunter, two long-time friends with a complicated history. A single night of passion pushes their bond into uncharted territory, bringing forth a flood of fear and desire that neither is ready to confront. The tension between them—both too scared to fully admit what they want—adds to the story's complexity.

Layna does an excellent job of developing her characters. They are real and messy, frustrating and lovable. Ashlie’s struggle with anxiety and her tendency to avoid confrontation are depicted with authenticity, giving her a depth that readers will relate to. Hunter is equally compelling, grappling with his fear of attachment while quietly yearning for something more. Their chemistry is undeniable, yet their baggage holds them back.

The narrative strikes the perfect balance between heat and emotion. While a third wheel introduces another layer of tension, it’s clear that no one stands a chance against Hunter’s devotion to Ashlie.

“Sunshine With You” is a story about embracing growth, facing your fears, and realizing that sometimes the very thing you’ve been running from is exactly what you need the most. It’s a raw and emotional journey that explores how love can heal even the deepest wounds.

As Hunter beautifully expresses, “Ashlie, you are a part of me forever. You have my heart. You are my heart, my sunshine gleaming out of the darkness.” 🫠
