After the dramatic events of the Battle of New Earth where their new technology proved its worth, the Terrans are feeling a lot more confident about the future and their place in the galaxy. The Taxons come begging for peace, with Crown Prince Frogar leading the mission mostly due to his previous experience with the Terrans. The Hareccans, realizing the odds are now in their favor beef up their offensive against the Taxons. Signing a peace treaty with the Terrans has now become a top priority as the Taxons need their experienced crews, or at least those that survived the battle of New Earth, back. Meanwhile, the Troodons continue to be a pain in the you-know-where, and the Hareccans are upset with the Terrans for pulling out of the Alliance and are sounding bellicose. Adding to the fun, one of the Terran warships that was out exploring finds three quite interesting humans who are not from the Terran's original universe.
I grew up in Sydney Australia but have lived on the Gold Coast, Australia for over thirty years. I have been many things over my life, courier driver, retail sales assistant, casino croupier, small business owner, a bankrupt former small business owner, a graphic designer, poker tournament operator and most recently an Uber driver. I have a marvellous wife and two great kids (both adults now) plus a border collie cross dog who thinks she's a human. I have always liked science fiction books, especially gung-ho space opera, time travel and alternate history genres. The first fiction book I read that I liked was Eagle of the Ninth and fist Science Fiction book I read and liked was Foundation by Asimov. My favourite authors, at the moment, are David Weber, Lois McMaster Bujold, Christopher Nuttall and Pam Uphoff. Weber writes the best space opera while Bujold is simply the best writer and Miles Vorkisgan an amazing character. Chris Nuttall rarely writes anything that is only so-so and his Schooled in Magic books are the best magic school series I have read so far. Pam Uphoff writes primarily a cross dimensional series called the Wine of the Gods with the Directorate stories offshoot. These are delightful, entertaining and often thought provoking books that I love. Chris Nuttall and Pam Uphoff inspired me to "have a go mate" and so I have. My first novel is On the Rocks, the first story of Arturo Sandus (Sanders) and his adventures as a Space Ship captain marooned on a primitive swords and sandals era planet. Sort of...
Terry's are smarter than the average centaur and or monkey
Thrown into a new universe where 2 legs are seen as backward barbarians by their nearest neighbor, New Terra decides that their centaur like allies are not very nice people, especially the way they treated the 2 leged prisoners of war the Terry's handed over to them. But can you really retract a pledge of alliance to a bunch of aragonant pricks?
Unfortunately I was quite annoyed with the author fairly early in this book, I really don’t like the way the he tried introduce ‘Arturo Sandus’ into this series and I found myself skipping over these chapters. I enjoyed the parts with ‘Frogar’ which were much more interesting, although he does ‘ramble on’ at times and again I get quite frustrated waiting for him to get back to the story.
What a delightful and unexpected surprise to see A.S. make an appearance. A plot tour de force whose implications it seems will ultimately be revealed in future volumes. Well done and well written.
Peter Rhodan has another excellent series going here. Just read New Federation 1 and 2 in the past few days. Excellent. I enjoyed the nod to some of his other books. My only complaint is I want the next in the series. :D
Loved the action and the optimism of the Terren planet. Throwing in Arturo is a wonderful twist. Can't help but wonder what comes next. Good story for anyone who loves a space opera.
I am a little frustrated as the author forgot that in book one Antimatter power was naval standard because in this book fusion is standard and antimatter is still in development. This kind of technology shifting can be really distracting from the story itself, which is pretty good otherwise.
