Seven years ago, I found myself, bruised and broken, standing at my grandmother's door, preparing the one and only lie I'd ever tell her. I couldn't tell her how I had truly come by those bruises. I couldn't tell her HE did it. I couldn't be that cliche. She took me in. Fixed me. Advised me. Now, I live in her house and run her coffee shop in the best place in the world, Balboa Island. This island, the locals... everything was predictable... right down to the weather, just the way I liked it - no surprises. When she passed, she left it all to me.
It was my safe haven, my happy place.
Until...

Max came back.

Totally loved this debut. If you look at the cover, to be honest it is misleading, this is a gritty novel. There are some circumstances Liliana faced that were explosive! After 7 years nothing for her has changed. She has a family owned coffee shop in So-Cal. She lives a quiet and very modest life in her Grandma's house. I loved the Balboa Island references. It is very close to my heart and everyone knows I love the beach!

As for the plot; hold onto your seat. It is a very well thought out book. All of the characters play a significant role. When someone is stalking, you won't guess who it is. I particularly fell in the love with Maxwell and Lil together. After they are together the group known as "The Blues" (for their gray haired color) who are the "root" of the Balboa Island population. Now for the record the places, scenery and descriptions are very accurate and you will fall in love with Southern California like I did.

The author worked the character of Lil's suspicious nature into the plot so it was basically seamless. No errors or inconsistencies. She wrote a very strong and business minded girl for Lil and a handsome friend from the past for Max.

As for the love story here..it is HOT! I am talking a chili pepper hot. After an attack, Lilianna could never really date. In many ways the author wrote a very blah existence for her until Max. Well my oh my several big scenes are just the right amount. Marshal is juicy with a capital J!

Please read this one and visit a small island in Southern California!

I started reading and didn't stop until the end. Then I wanted more. I very much look forward to the second novel. What a great read!

Max is dominant, confident, and wonderfully protective. Very sexy.
Lili is independent and playfully snarky, a great match for Max's masculinity.

I loved the beautiful, thoughtful descriptions. And I loved the sexy scenes of hotness even more. There was searing passion that became connected, intense desire. Add trust and understanding between the characters = fantastic romance!

Delicious tension when it came to the frightening Professor. Many surprises in this novel, it was very, very well done!

As the title suggests, it's a recovery story. There's a lot to be learned from Lili's experiences, through how difficult it is for her to heal mental scars. The struggle Lili has doing so was incredibly well-written. I will absolutely be reading the next book in this series!

“Recovered” is CJ Hartland's debut novel and she has “done good'. She has delivered a great read for those who like suspense, romance, and a little real local flair in the mix.

Ms. Hartland's “REcovered” will carry you along as you turn the pages of this suspenseful novel. Those readers who like a little adult romance between the pages will be just as pleased. She'll keep you guessing who the bad guys really are, so much so, while she has you routing for Max while you'll wonder if you should be as the facts become more apparent.

There is wisdom shared as Lilianna our heroine seeks familiar surroundings to allow herself to heal from a traumatic experience and find ways to live some type of normal life. A life without any entanglements.

I don't believe in spoilers, but hint – hint she is planning a second release. I'm sure all her new fans will be looking for it.

Broken and beat down from a past relationship, Lili returns to the only place she has fond memories of. Her grandma’s house on Balboa Island. A safe haven for her, that enfolds her and helps to heal her wounds, both mentally and physically. She runs the local coffee shop, plays Bridge with the Blue Hair Mafia and keeps to herself. No one knows the real Lili and that’s the way she likes it and wants to keep it. Drew the local officer is hot for Lili, but for Lili they are just childhood friends, and with the arrival of Max, another childhood friend, Drew’s jealous flares.

Lili let’s Max into her mind, telling him what happened all those years ago. How she was hurt and how she built a wall around her to keep people out. Something in Max pulls that wall down. But that wall could quickly go back up after Max tells her someone hired him to find her. Is it the professor? Is he back to make good on this threat? Max and Lili take their relationship to the next level, while Drew is left watching from the side lines. As their relationship deepens, polaroids appear of Lili, from seven years ago till present. Who is doing this? Is it Max? Drew? The professor? Why are they playing games with her?

Great beach read, rainy day read, or whenever read.

When is book #2 coming out?

What can I say?

First off, thank you CJ Hartland for gifting me with a copy of this wonderful debut novel. I really enjoyed it and it made me wonder a lot about who the bad guy would be the whole time.

Liliana is a really well created character that went through a traumatic experience while in college that´s marked her forever, never allowing her to really trust any man romantically.

Trying to pick up the pieces of her life she returns to her grandma´s house, the place that´s most comforting and safe for her. But after seven years of living a sheltered life with the locals and familiar people, a figure from her past comes back to shake her ground, for better or for worse.

After rekindling a young love with Max, strange pictures and letters are coming to Lili, which means the dark times are coming back too. Now, she has to struggle to find the bad guy and put him away for good.

With scary reveals and not knowing who she can really trust, follow Liliana in a thrilling and riveting story.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat for several hours. I say hours because I couldn't put it down once I started. Lili has gone through a world of trauma and is still licking her wounds in her deceased grandmother's home on Balboa Island. Her attacker is now released from prison and Lili is convinced he will come after her again. When pictures start to be sent to her, she knows that her past is coming back to haunt her again but who is taking the pictures when her attacker is still in a half-way house? It has to be someone she is close to in order to get pictures of her in some of these situations. Everyone becomes suspect, including her first-love Max who recently returned to the island and her good friend Drew that she's known since she was a child. Many mysteries are revealed as the story unfolds. REcovered is expertly written and beautifully executed. A fantastic read and I can't wait for the next book in the series!

WOW... I have to say that this book was a great surprise. This is the first book I have read from C.J. and I have to say that I will continue from this point forward and HIGHLY recommend her to all my fellow readers.

Lilianna has been through hell and back. She went through a horrific ordeal and became a very guarded women. Until she reunited with Max. For me they were both a little mysterious, and while they were reuniting the way he helped her you cant help but to fall for him. I thought at first her went about it the wrong way, but when she responded to it so well it was definitely the right way to go.

Although their reuniting was under very strange circumstances, the way things worked out and how the story unfolded was simply AMAZING. There were so many twists and turns that I would not put the book down. I CAN'T WAIT for the next book.

Such an amazing book. Lili has gone through such a tragic ordeal and just trying to live her life in peace. She has her coffee shop and her Island life. Then Max comes back. Their passion is HOT and instant. I loved Max instantly, he has so sweet and such a great alpha male.

CJ Hartland did such a wonderful job with this book. The story flowed effortlessly with great characters. This was truly a 5 star read all the way around.

MICHELLE'S REVIEW

ARC in exchange for honest review

This book was just not at all what I expected! It opened with some high drama and then moves forward 7 years.

Lili is brutally attacked by her lover- the Professor- and after 7 years- he is out of prison and that means her fears are ramped up.

In the midst of all this- her first love, Max comes back into town and they start back up again. I have to say- their relationship seemed like nothing and then everything super quick. While it caught me by surprise, it did end up working pretty well in the end.

I think the thing that is interesting about the way the book is written is that things seem to move in one direction and then very drastically take a turn in another. It is kind of interesting and more so because it actually works out in most of the cases. The book ended up being interesting and I enjoyed it a lot. I was just often surprised.

For example- with no spoilers- her relationship with her best friend Drew goes from normal to estranged to what the fuck just happened over the course of the book. But we don't see him a lot so it catches you by surprise along the way.

I love books with mystery so that was the part the dragged me in. Some strange things are going on in town, with Lili's lawyer and with Max and trying to figure those things out is fun. Some things are pretty clear after a few clues are dropped and some things- even though you expect them- are shocking. Again:

Another rapid change happens in the end where I thought the book got really dark, really fast. Again- it worked out in the end but it caught me by surprise.

Since I cannot leave a mystery unsolved- I must read the next book. That's right folks- this is a cliffy of epic proportions so get ready.

Mystery lovers and lovers of something a bit darker will probably like this- especially towards the end. I have a feeling book 2 will be pretty dark as well and reveal some major things. While it's not a perfect novel and has some flaws- it is pretty solid overall and I enjoyed it.

REcovered was a very enjoyable read. This is a new author to me and I hadn’t read anything with mystery in it in a while. And there was lots of mystery in this one. It starts with a bang! Lilianna decides it’s time to let go of her relationship with her professor, but the professor is not going to let her go so easily. And, the drama begins!!

“I wanted to move on from my damaged self. I wanted this with Max. Still, there was a part of me that was afraid.”

Seven years later Lili is trying her hardest to get her life back when a blast from the past turns up and changes everything…for the good and bad. What she thought was her quiet and safe life is then changed. Who can she trust?? Who is to blame?? I had my suspicions the whole time but so many things happen that made me second guess myself.

“What is he doing to me? This is not normal behavior for me, at all…ever. Each time he touches me, I become some animal controlled by hormones and instinct.”

I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery, and trying to piece everything together. The story also has a lot of steam to it. At times I felt the sex scenes were a little too repetitive but they were still hot ;) I enjoyed the dialogue and the writing style flowed smooth for me. The end started to feel a tad rushed in my opinion but not enough to take away my enjoyment. I just felt I needed a little more at the end. And then the actual end happened and I was left thinking, WHY!?! I didn’t expect things to end the way it did, but it just makes me anxious to get my hands on the next book , to hopefully get answers to all those unanswered questions.

REcovered comes recommended by this Book Bitch and if you are in to mystery with a side of sex, this is the read for you :)

I read this book because I'm always intrigued by a romance where the characters have to overcome past fears to regain trust, the ability to love again and lost lust.

In a nutshell: after being attacked by a former lover, her professor, Lili retires to an island to find a sort of peace. Danger might have followed her there but until she's certain, she's got her hands full when an old flame enters her life and changes it completely.

What blew my mind is the sizzling chemistry that goes on between Lili and Max. I loved how he coaxes her back to life and gains her trust by gentleness and no small amount of erotic temptation. Another interesting thing is that Lily is being stalked by someone in the shadows and that Max might somehow be involved due to his kind of job. This adds tension and uneasiness to the atmosphere as Lili has to investigate what's going on and is never sure of anyone. She has to find out who's hired Max, if it's the professor, where's he's hiding, and when he's going to strike out. There's also a mystery surrounding her father who left her and her mum when she was a kid. Family and legacy play a huge part in Lili's life. That made it all quite entertaining along with the growing heat between Lily and Max. Sparks there!

The writing style is very casual, lots of commas make their appearance unexpectedly.

Favourite quote: Do we all do that? Push our painful emotions aside and try to force something different out of our lives?

Two things I also liked:
Balboa Island, it's real and I think I'd love to run a coffee shop there too.
The Blue Mafia - so fun and quirky!

Warning: this is a first book. I realised it as I approached the ending. The second book is Rekindled.

REcovered was my first book my CJ Hartland and going into the book I wasn't sure what to expect, (the blurb left you curious about what you were actually getting involved in) it turns out to be a much more layered story than I was expecting! REcovered tells the story of Lilliana and how she is moving on with her life after a traumatic experience in her past and what happens when her past comes back into her life.

I really enjoyed getting to know Lilli and Max, I enjoyed their chemistry, banter and interactions (and the heat!). CJ Hartland created a wonderful community on Balboa Island and really made the reader get immersed in the setting. This story had a lot of layers to it and at times it was hard to keep track of all the pieces. While this story starts out in one direction it does take a rather abrupt turn in the last few chapters that left me scratching my head. Up until the end the pacing was just right and then everything ended up exploding at once and adding new twists that you are not expecting. Finishing REcovered I am left with a LOT of questions and wondering if it all will all be ironed out in the next installment of this series (yep, there is a book 2).

CJ Hartland created an interesting story that is multi-layered with mystery, heat and romance. I loved watching the romance take place in the crazy that surrounded Max and Lilli and I will be curious how this all will come together in REkindled.

If you are looking for a mystery with a splash of romance located on an island, then "REcovered" by CJ Hartland is the book for you. After a very traumatic breakup with her Professor, Lilianna returns to Balboa Island and the comfort of her Grandmothers home and coffee shop to recover. It's been 7 years since her move and her safe, routine life is about to be turned upside down....lots of twists and turns! ...Max, a childhood friend, reenters Lili's life and things really get heated up and filled with lots of mystery. Someone is stalking Lilianna, bringing up old memories.
I wasn't a fan of the ending but will definitely look forward to the next book in this series

I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This was s romantic suspense story about a woman who had been beaten when she was in college and her attacker sent to prison. It was time for him to get out and she was afraid he would come looking for her. It was an interesting read but the last couple of chapters had me scratching my head. There was a cliff hanger so I guess I will have to read the next book to see what happens.
