Geez, DP, the early years.

I was going to say that DP must not have reached her stride with mean heroes, but that sonuvabitch Evan is right up after Harden so maybe Harden is an aberration. Is Diana Palmer having a little joke at our expect by naming the maybe-virginal hero Harden. I hope so.

Harden, yikes that name, is relatively beta for a Long Tall Texan who like all DP heroes must look like this…

He meets Miranda, a widow who lost her husband and baby just weeks (or was it months?) ago. Miranda has small breasts. That’s pretty much all you need to know about her.

Since Harden’s chest is so hairy it compensates for Miranda’s small breasts, and they decide to marry so they can have some good sex. Miranda’s old husband, old as in first and dead, didn’t appreciate her flat chest and sex was not good.

I’m sorry, but now I am off my stride. I just don’t know what to do with a DP hero that is not as mean as a snake.

Evan is ever present, and pops up as a voice of reason by saying things like, “Git in there and consummate that marriage.” or words to that effect. He is just beginning to show his personality transplant about poor Anna in the next book, but that’s a rant for another time.

Mom is a problem for Harden, and almost ruins the marriage before it’s even off the ground.

The couple finally consummate their marriage because Evan tells Miranda that Harden is a virgin. Is he or isn’t he?

I thought at the opening that this was going to be a 4 star story. The H/h meet at a bar in Chicago. The heroine is dressed up and has had too much to drink. When her “date” (her brother) is called away the heroine tipsily starts flirting with the hero who thinks she’s beautiful. He informs her he hates women up front, but he’s actually really nice to her. He discovers she’s drinking because she was in an accident that killed her husband and unborn child just a month or so ago.

When they part ways, the hero sees the heroine go to a bridge and he thinks she’s going to jump. He takes her to his hotel suite to sleep it off. The heroine is embarrassed the next day, but the hero is kind.

He takes her home and then goes back to his Cattleman Conference where he and his brother, Evan (from the next book) get into fisticuffs with some other ranchers about hormones used in beef production. They are both exhilarated by their fight. Hero has a black eye.

Hero calls the heroine and against his better judgment, he stays in Chicago and spends the next week dating the heroine. It’s actually a really believable courtship sequence. I usually find myself very bored with courtship (give me conflict any day of the week), but DP made it believable and interesting. These were two lost souls who could help each other.

All was well until H went back to Jacobsville and to his insecurities and hang ups. He still hates his mother for having an affair while married and bringing him into the family as the illegitimate half brother. (He shares their last name since his step-father adopted him). This disrespect to his mother is puzzling and cringey.

The H/h write – but the heroine takes the hero’s lead and keeps the letters impersonal. However, when the hero returns to Chicago six months later, the spark is back and we have a bit of virgin whispering. But the heroine is not a virgin – how does that work in a DP story?

Heroine had painful sex with her hubby who told her she wasn’t attractive, so she doesn’t like intimacy. Hero introduces her to the wonder of a hairy chest and even invites her touch him “where he is a man”. This is the first third base reference I’ve seen in the LTT series, btw.

Hero also tells the heroine he’s never done this before, but he has had other experiences. I’m not sure what that means. DP is coy about the hero’s sexual track record. I *think * she was trying to imply that he had watched porn or read men’s magazines – I sure hope she didn’t mean he had bought a prostitute.

And speaking of a prostitute, that’s what the hero’s idiot mother thought the h was when he brought the heroine home from Chicago. It’s not what the heroine looks like, it’s because the hero had told his mother that she had turned him off of women and that he would make a prostitute her daughter in law someday.

The heroine is understandably upset by this, but they work it out. Everything is fine, hero proposes and heroine accepts. But heroine thinks she should pretend to be a city girl (she grew up on a ranch in South Dakota) to test if the hero really loves her. This actually doesn’t backfire and the hero thinks it’s amusing.

What is not amusing is the H’s mother tells the heroine on her wedding day that the hero is still stuck on his ex who died and she feels guilty about it.

Heroine then asks the H about his ex on their Mexican honeymoon and he gets mad and they don’t have sex – although they tour the Mayan ruins for bit of travelogue. The heroine is convinced the hero doesn’t love her. Hero says they will divorce when they get back to Texas.

The H’s brother notices something is wrong and tells the h that the H just needs to forget his ex and she is the one to do it. Since he is a virgin, he might be shy so she should tart herself up.
She tries to seduce him, but hero thinks she’s trying to manipulate him to forgive his mother, so he flings the insults her dead husband used to say to her to make her feel inadequate.

Heroine decides to leave.

H’s brother yells at the H that heroine thinks he is still hung up on his ex. Hero realizes she was acting out of love and that he does need to forgive his mother. But first they’ll have sex.
Then hero explains that he’s come to the conclusion that it was his ex’s time to die and that his mother had nothing to do with her suicide. Same with the heroine’s husband and baby. It was God’s will. H and his mother make up with the hero’s mother no longer feeling a twinge of guilt about her affair.

I really liked the H/h together – until the H’s mother got involved. She really messed them up.
I not sure if DP meant to put in the subtext that since the H looked like the love of her life, she was jealous of any other woman he was interested. I’m not sure because none of the characters acknowledged it.

But if she meant to put that subtext in – well done. It was all there – spelled out in her behavior past and present. This woman was toxic to both the h and the Hero’s dead ex. It was also creepy that her disrespectful son was her favorite son -all because he looked like the guy she “will love until her dying day.” (He died in Vietnam, so she went back to her husband and made the best of it)
I hate those settling for second best relationships, so that put a damper on the end of the story even if it wasn’t the H/h’s relationship.

This story had some meat to it and was interesting to see how DP’s writing has changed. She’s got more complex story lines and less time devoted to sex scenes and undressing/dressing (Thank God)

]Diana Palmer Checklist:
Hairy Chest – check
Breast Description – small and firm and white
Cigarettes – check
Alcohol – Pina Coladas - gross
Town Descriptions – Chicago and later on the Mayan ruins. The brother’s ranch in Jacobsville has another house on it the hero is remodeling for the heroine. There’s a Baptist church where they marry. (We have two churches now – Baptist and Methodist)
Gardenia Scent – No.
Hobby Horse – this is the second book that DP has come out against growth hormones in beef.
Cutesy detail – hero’s mother is always trying to fix things and messing them up. I added the apple pie obsession to my review of Connal, since I think this is going to be a thing.

Highlights

"She'd grown up in ranching country and knew quite a bit about how beef was produced, but she didn't say so. It was nicer to let him explain how it worked, to sit and listen to his deep, quiet voice."

"I'm a loner," he said irritably. "I like it that way. I don't need anyone." "I suppose I'm not very good at being alone," she replied.

"You've given me a new perspective on women. I suppose there are some decent ones in the world." She smiled sadly. "High praise, coming from you."

"I can't spend my life wandering around Chicago while you're in your office!"

"Let me make love to you. Set any limits you like."

"Amazing, what a man can do when he sets his mind to it," he whispered against her mouth. "I’m glad to see that my instincts haven't worn out. Although I've read about that, I've never done it before."

"Why are you shocked?" he asked. "I'm no playboy. Women are still pretty much a mystery to me. Less so now," he added with a wicked gleam in his eyes.

"Sex is serious business to me. I don't sleep around, ever."

"I've missed you, woman," he whispered roughly.

"What's the old saying, 'if wishes were horses, beggars could ride'?"

"'Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely, and more temperate...'"

"I hope you took vitamins, because you're going to need every bit of strength you've got."

"Well, now you have, and you can stop throwing your conquests in my face— Oh!" His mouth stopped the tirade, and he smiled against it. "They weren't conquests, they were educational experiences that made me the perfect specimen of male prowess you see before you."

She caught her breath, gaping at him. "And your brother thinks you're a virgin!" she burst out. He shrugged. "We all make mistakes."

I liked this one more than the previous (Connal's book) and less than Evan's book which follows.
It's low angst though and a different set up for DP, in that Miranda is a recent widow. Therefore NOT a virgin, but of course it was awful sex until Harden ; )

Anyways, They meet in Chicago and neither can get the other out of their mind. There's a myriad of small MUs that keep the story going. But both MCs are rather sweet. Harden reiterates MANY times that he is a woman-hater. It was kinda silly, like he was reminding himself. But I did like the way the story leads up to his finally smiling and even laughing.

The main plot was good, but I found the minor plots very unrealistic. I loved Harden and Miranda's story, the pain and passion between the two. But I hated the fact that Harden only started thinking about his mother only after he met Miranda. I found that side of the story a bit too far-fetched.

Putting that aside, I loved Harden's story.

If the H hasn’t been so mean to his mum he would of scored higher on my hero chart but as he was rather mean to her (some deserved some not) he gets a mark deducted.

However, this H has to be the nicest DP so far in terms of how he treated his h for most of the story.

He couldn’t keep away from her, he was honest and admitted being a woman hater but he still couldn’t resist her. He was - shock horror - understanding and respectful of her feelings about being recently widowed and losing her baby. He NEVER pushed her to do anything she didn’t want to and looked out for her.

The real angst for these 2 were his family and her for some strange not admitting she wasn’t a city girl but he even took that well.

The h was a massive doormat with her dead husband and I did think she was a bit tacky moving on so quickly but when you read the story it’s dealt with well and they both have concerns which I thought was handled well.

H main hang up is he was illegitimate due to an affair his mum had and he held it against her big time. He was treated well by step dad but he still had massive issues. To compound this the mother interferes with s relationship he had with a GF and she committed suicide so he is also pi**ed off about that as well.

Still a chain smoking H and he’s another fan of the chest rubbings that’s 7 for 7 so far

Maybe 2.5 stars

I actually really liked the first half of this story. I liked the beginning of their relationship. I thought Harden was pretty sweet with her, especially with them being long distance. The second half soured my opinion. He was a jerk to her and didn't apologize enough for me.

A well written, enjoyable, easy to read romance

SPOILER ALERT! I DO NOT DETAIL ANY PARTICULAR EVENTS IN THIS REVIEW BUT I DO TALK IN GENERAL TERMS ABOUT THE PLOT AND CHARACTERS ALL THROUGH THIS REVIEW SO IF YOU DON'T WANT ANY CLUES ABOUT WHAT I DID NOT LIKE ABOUT THE BOOK DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW. IF YOU WANT A REVIEW THAT WILL HELP YOU DECIDE WHETHER YOU WILL BE AS DISAPPOINTED BY THE BOOK AS I WAS, READ ON.

A well written and enjoyable romance by a talented, well known writer of action packed romances. This book is quick and easy to read. The plot is a little trite but with unique variations. The characters are well drawn as individuals and not just stock characters. There is no bad language or current sexual intercourse outside of marriage, although one of the characters that is an adult in this book was conceived outside of marriage and has a rocky relationship with his mother in this book partly because of this. There are some very explicit depiction of kissing and other sexual acts short of intercourse between people who are courting but the characters do not let themselves "go too far".

This book is a very well done example of a romance based on silly misunderstanding between two people who are so afraid to be hurt if they say what they mean that they tell half truths and then feel hurt when they are not understood. I get so tired both in stories and in real life with people who expect others to guess what they mean when they say one thing and mean something totally different. So I cannot give a book that is entirely based on misunderstanding based on things that the characters deliberately keep hidden any more than three stars. Deliberately withholding important information about important things can be a form of lying in extreme cases, and this book shows what can happen when people do this.. But that should be so obvious that it is not worth writing yet another book about. If you are that messed up, arrange to get professional help, whether from a minister with training in counselling or a therapist. Don't expect that getting married will fix being a compulsive liar especially if you marry another compulsive liar, and especially do not expect that having children will solve this problem.

Note to self:
Reviews indicate he may not be a virgin hero. If he is, then it looks like he's the kind that "did everything else but" kind. And it appears he's a braggart and a woman hater.

If anyone who has read this, feels I have been misled from the reviews, please feel free to enlighten me. Until then I wont be reading this one.

This was a great story of what love can do. These two had a tragic past. She was willing to move as he was still stuck in it. With a little help from a fairy brother he got them to see the light. Loved.
Narration was amazing.

"No.

Hmmmmmm I can't make my mind up about Harden. Rounded it to a high three in the end.

It started off really sweet, and I just loved how Harden and Mindy started dating and being all shy and sweet with each other. Then about 3/4 in it just starts to get dumb.

Mindy isn't sure Harden loves her for *herself* you see, so to test him she... pretends to be a completely different person. She was born and bred on a cattle ranch and won rodeo prizes, but she decided to pretend to be a useless, simpering city girl whose afraid of cows and horse because... I don't know why!!! It made no sense! If she wanted him to love her for who she is then shouldn't have, you know, been herself? Madness.

There was also the inevitable 'he's super mean to her because misunderstanding' which was promptly resolved by a forced magical D moment. Not a word of apology, just a good hard dicking and all is forgiven I guess. I dunno, if a bloke told me I made his dick limp and was the last person on earth he wanted to have sex with I would take it kinda sorta badly. I certainly wouldn't immediately forget it because he stormed back into the room and held me down on a bed.

Then there is the whole Theodora thing. We the reader are supposed to be sympathetic to the mother who had an affair, drove the H's first finacee to suicide, and accused his second fiancee of being a whore. In my book that woman had well and truly burned her bridges, I can forgive the odd snafu but affairs, suicide and malicious accusations are a bit much.

It was ok.

Heroine was nice and I liked how when people were mean to her she would try to leave. She would only stay once they apologized to her. I just really hate heroines that accept constant verbal abuse.

I liked that for a majority of the book the hero wasn't a jerk. I liked that there wasn't another woman hanging around (only the ghost of his first love) making problems. His mother is the one who caused the problems between them. I didn't really like her all that much.

I liked the idea of hero being a virgin. I read through the book with the expectation that hero was a virgin for it to be revealed by the conversation hero and heroine had after consumating relationship that he was actually not a virgin (basically she says he's no virgin, don't throw your conquest in my face and he says he doesn't see the other women as conquest but as educational experiences). I have read almost all of the Long, Tall Texan books but admittedly not in order. I started with the later ones and am now catching up to the older ones.

Harden and Miranda have a second chance at love. They both had loved or at least thought they had and then lost their loves. This made Harden bitter and Miranda devastated.

They meet accidentally and Harden helps her in a time of need. There is an instant attraction even though Harden fights it almost until it's too late.

It's typical Diana Palmer and I enjoyed reading it.

Harden (Long, Tall Texans #7)
by Diana Palmer

Being the fourth son in a ranch family is one thing, being the issue of your mother’s adulterous relationship, a bastard, is quite another matter. That being said this is a Cowboy Romance and of course the male is arrestingly handsome and the gal a stunning beauty. The gal is a recent widow.

This is tale follows the typical romance formula save that the crisis occurs after the wedding during the honeymoon. It’s the older brother who knocks some sense into the man as they come close to blows.

I purchased a copy of Long, Tall Texans: Harden by Diana Palmer, and this review was given freely.
It contains a lot of strife, several misunderstandings, and happy endings for all but Ethan.
Survivors of tragically ending relationships: the wealthy, embittered, and self-professed woman-hating Harden and the recently widowed paralegal Miranda, who has trust and body image issues from her short, unhappy marriage and miscarriage; mistrust but can’t resist their sudden attraction.

18+ for many suddenly ending steamy scenes.

Gotta love a cowboy!

When I need a good cowboy romance story, Diana Palmer always delivers. Two hurt souls meet and develop a love that heals them both. I enjoyed the characters and the setting. There were a few rushed and unrealistic scenes, and Harden’s attitude (and Miranda’s acceptance of it) could set women’s rights back a little. But, overall, this was an enjoyable, quick read.

Harden & Miranda

When Harden and Miranda meet both are dealing with lot of hurts, she lost her husband and unborn child in a accident and Harden is resentful and bitter with secrets from his past. Between them they have a second chance at love but it is going to be a rocky road. There was this game about Harden been or not been a virgin. A bit silly really because this was talk until the end and it was never revealed. Good read none the less. Can't wait to read Evan's story

Loved it!

For Harden and Miranda it was love at first sight but a very rocky road to them actually being together. Miranda lost her husband and unborn child in a car accident, Harden fiancee took her own life. So many misunderstandings to be cleared up before happiness can take root. Absolutely love this authors work.

This cowboy is one of those that I liked the most, although his excessive hatred for his mother had me very bad, how he behaved with her, but his relationship with the girl as he gave him his time, how he wanted to do things well, is the most romantic until now they were all bloodthirsty with their partners before falling in love with them

This is an actual excerpt from this book. It’s far from the dumbest one, but it’s a particularly dumb one and I feel like it explains my rating perfectly. Silly-ass book.

“This is how much I want you,” he bit off at her lips. “I hope you took vitamins, because you’re going to need every bit of strength you’ve got.”
