The Australian

For two years Pricilla Johnson watched John Sterling manage his cattle station, and at the tender age of eighteen she innocently surrendered her young heart to him. He was big, brash, brazen and Australian. Everyone called it infatuation, Priss knew it was love. But Pricilla had to move on with her life. Four years of college in Hawaii provided the time and distance to transform a naive girl into a desirable, mature woman.Returning to Australia as a certified teacher, she was ready to put John to the test. And ready or not, he was about to learn a lesson he would never forget.

Susan Eloise Spaeth was born on 11 December 1946 in Cuthbert, Georgia, USA. She was the eldest daughter of Maggie Eloise Cliatt, a nurse and also journalist, and William Olin Spaeth, a college professor. Her mother was part of the women's liberation movement many years before it became fashionable. Her best friends are her mother and her sister, Dannis Spaeth (Cole), who now has two daughters, Amanda Belle Hofstetter and Maggie and lives in Utah. Susan grew up reading Zane Grey and fell in love with cowboys. Susan is a former newspaper reporter, with sixteen years experience on both daily and weekly newspapers. Since 1972, she has been married to James Kyle and have since settled down in Cornelia, Georgia, where she started to write romance novels. Susan and her husband have one son, Blayne Edward, born in 1980.

She began selling romances in 1979 as Diana Palmer. She also used the pseudonyms Diana Blayne and Katy Currie, and her married name: Susan Kyle. Now, she has over 40 million copies of her books in print, which have been translated and published around the world. She is listed in numerous publications, including Contemporary Authors by Gale Research, Inc., Twentieth Century Romance and Historical Writers by St. James Press, The Writers Directory by St. James Press, the International Who's Who of Authors and Writers by Meirose Press, Ltd., and Love's Leading Ladies by Kathryn Falk. Dalton national sales awards, two Bookrak national sales awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award for series storytelling from Romantic Times, several Affaire de Coeur awards, and two regional RWA awards.

Inspired by her husband, who quit a blue-collar manufacturing job to return to school and get his diploma in computer programming, Susan herself went back to college as a day student at the age of 45. In 1995, she graduated summa cum laude from Piedmont College, Demorest, GA, with a major in history and a double minor in archaeology and Spanish. She was named to two honor societies (the Torch Club and Alpha Chi), and was named to the National Dean's List. In addition to her writing projects, she is currently working on her master's degree in history at California State University. She hopes to specialize in Native American studies. She is a member of the Native American Rights Fund, the American Museum of Natural History, the National Cattlemen's Association, the Archaeological Institute of Amenca, the Planetary Society, The Georgia Conservancy, the Georgia Sheriff's Association, and numerous conservation and charitable organizations. Her hobbies include gardening, archaeology, anthropology, iguanas, astronomy and music.

In 1998, her husband retired from his own computer business and now pursues skeet shooting medals in local, state, national and international competition. They love riding around and looking at the countryside, watching sci-fi on TV and at the movies, just talking and eating out.

A very paint-by-the-numbers Harlequin romance. It has none of Diana Palmer's gloriously bad writings of her later novels. No covert operatives, no virtual game role-play, and the big fat jerk hero's antics, though cruel and nasty, never even came close to the level of super-abusive psychos that I have come to anticipate as DP's signature heroes. Though the story is set partly in Australia and in Hawaii, I never even got the sense of the setting, not the way Charlotte Lamb, for example, can make the town or city or countryside village or whatever place she writes about come alive and almost become another living, breathing character in the plot. Just very flat, boring writing that makes me almost miss some of DP's gloriously-bad-hall-of-famers that I have read in the past.

The H and h are next door neighbors on a vast Australian ranch or station as it is called. h is a teenager with a crush that H, an older and more experienced man, naturally keeps at arms length until the ROMANCELANDIA GODS descend upon his nether regions and remove the willpower to resist her. Everything is going hunky dory until H betrays h and they are separated due to an H-orchestrated Big, Great, Terrible Misunderstanding .

A lot of yaddi-yaddi-yadda, a lot of fake, completely orchestrated, OW-OM drama, and then, mercifully, the inevitable conclusion. Frankly, my dear, by the end, I couldn't give a damn.

So here we are in Australia!
This is our typical DP book with the difference that we don't have our usual cowboy with horses, cows and prairies, but an australian guy with sheep, kangaroos, wombats and other strange and unique animals from autralian fauna.
We also are taught some of the most frequent austalian expressions ( I suppose).
The hero is a sheep breeder, very similar to her texans, and the heroine is in love with him.
She's going to Hawaii to complete her studies (lucky girl) and they promise to get married as soon as she comes back.
He also goes to her because he misses her very much, and they make out in usual DP's way in her aunt's sofa.
He also tells her he doesn't want to wait to marry her and she accepts enthusiastically.
Then he goes back to his sheep.
As time goes by the heroine doesn't hear from him any more and decides it's better if she calls him.
He tells her he changed his mind and he's now with another woman, a real woman, not a child like her.
The heroine is obviously shattered but goes on with her life. In the end Hawaii is not a bad place to forget someone. It helps.
Five years later she's back to the Outback and meets the hero.
They spit venom to each other and keep on insulting with fervor.
The heroine is now a teacher, more refined and definitely all grown up.
Then she accidentally finds out the real reason why the hero left her, that is, as we readers already suspected, that he had business problem and lost all he had, and even if he's not broken anymore, he still has some issue.
Then there's a part where he rejects her and tells her he doesn't love her and never loved her.
I don't know why, maybe he didn't want her pity and was afraid that she only felt pity for him, but I don't want to try very hard to understand DP's heroes' motives because they are ofter incomprehensible to me.
But then he finds out she is still a virgin and we all know this is a trigger for all dp's heroes.
He in fact understands she loves him and has loved him all along, so decides to win her back, because he has loved her all along too.
I only understand she is very repressed and frustrated. Virginity has nothing to do with love, but in DP's world it has. So we are not to discuss it.
He makes a whole confession and we are happy to know he suffered greatly when he left her, he only did it to spare her long years of starving (ehem) and he was celibate all those years.
Yeah, boy, you made it!
Nice and entertaining book, with many strange words and animals I didn't know.
For those who love Diana Palmer this is one you should read.
And very safe!

I just realised something. I have now come to the point where a meh-okay book gets only a 2 star from me. A long way from back when I started reading romance at the very impressionable age of fourteen, where every single book I read was 'AH-MAZING'. LOL I know what you're thinking, I'm not even out of my teens yet. But I still feel very world-weary and cynical. And I'm so picky about books.

Anyways, let's move onto this book. I love Diana Palmer, I really do. But there are times when she *sob* disappoints me. This book was one of them. The heroine was completely TSTL. I mean, how could she not see how much the hero loved her?! And DP kind of overdid the whole Australian 'slang' thing. It would've gotten on my nerves had it been some other author. But it was Diana Palmer so... *shrugs* everything's forgiven ♥

As I was saying, I didn't like the heroine very much. She was too dense, too insecure. It was so darned obvious how much the hero loved her from the beginning. (In that sense, he wasn't a typical DP hero, because he was cruel to her for a reason completely different.) I didnt like how she turned hot and cold for him, but I definitely liked her at the ending.

As for the hero, he wasn't that much different from DP's other heroes, even though he was 'Australian'. I loved him from the beginning, when he comes to pick whatshername up from the airport. Dammit I love DP's alphaholes so much :') It was whatsherface whom I didn't like very much, even if she was in love with him.

The writing was delightfully Diana Palmer-y, there wasn't much of a plot to speak of; just a sweet, angsty romance with an even sweeter ending. Not one of her best ones, but the ending was its saving grace.

It broke my heart. How he rejected her, how she never moved on, how afraid she was to give him a second chance and risk her heart again...DP makes me swoon and cry and her love stories are so damn beautiful! All I needed was an epilogue a few years down the line ;)

"The Australian" is the story of Priscilla and John.
Priscilla and her family are from America, but they settled down in Australia in a ranch, only for Priscilla to fall for her ten year older neighbor John at the tender age of 18.
Initially viewing attraction to be one sided, it progresses to hot and heavy kisses, until
Priscilla has to move away for her studies to Honolulu and John breaks off their engagement.
Heartbroken, Priscilla lives her life for four years, only to return to Australia as a school teacher and realize the flames never extinguished as well as the real reason behind the breakup.
Sweet, typical DP love story with a furry cowboy, naive innocent heroine, angst and misunderstanding and loads of yearning. I've always been a fan of such stories and this was another great cherry on top!
Loved the yearning and the ending.

What a pity that, wanting to write about Australia, Ms Palmer did not see fit to bother to acquire even the most basic acquaintance with our country.

For Ms Palmer's future reference,

1. There are no such things as "koala bears".
2. "Dinkum" means true or genuine, not excellent.
3. Working class Australians do not call their evening meal "supper". If they have not learned to call it dinner, they call it "tea".

These are just a few of the more glaring errors selected at random. It is best for a writer to stick to what she knows.

It's a good book. I liked it. Even though Priss is a bit annoying mostly because she act like a teenagers, but overall I enjoyed this book.

John isn't Diana Palmer's typical Hero. Sure he's a jerk but he did it not because it's his attitude, he has his own reason. I liked him too.

Good book. ;)

Pretty badly written with an over the top fake Aussie English to pretend it'srreally set in Australia....
But mostly it's unacceptable due to heroine's lack of brain, spine and any pride. Plus it has 2 couples of abusive parents, yes hers too. I understand lying to her up to a point. After 5 years if his pride is so strong, you should start defending your daughter not manipulating her.

The Australian
Diana Palmer

Harlequin Book so we know the formula, OK Timewaster.

Begins with Priss being picked up at the airport after five years away at college by the “neighbour boy” she left behind her when she went off to Hawaii to live with an Aunt. He is performing a neighbourly duty with cool, almost cold efficiency.

Chapter two jumps back to the day Priss left for Hawaii and John drops in to give her a petting session that goes all the way to third base and an orgasm without hitting a home run. This is a romance novel.

Chapter three sees her in Hawaii.

Finally by chapter 6 we get back to Aussie. Since his mother moved out on him John has moved the widow next door in to cook and give him comfort breaking Priss’ heart. No wonder that ride home was rather icy.

But this is a romance and it demands an HEA so the second half will concern the reconciliation and the love fest. John may even finally make the home run. The pair have already had two make-out sessions to titillate the reader. Will the epilogue feature little uns.

What a Georgia Peach knows about fair dinkum is open to question. Dropping a few colloquialisms hardly qualifies as local knowledge.

Of course we repeatedly hear about Priss' beauty and Jakes powerful legs, narrow waist, six pack, muscular chest and broad shoulders. And he's blonde.

Rocky and steamy.

I purchased a copy of the Australian by Diana Palmer and this review was given freely. Contains a fair amount of drama and many steamy scenes. The beginning of a fast paced romance between neighbors leads to disillusion, only to heat up again 5 years later when new teacher Priscilla is reunited with the determined and struggling station owner John.

Boring

What was I thinking? This has to be the most boring book ever written. Too pretentious. Tell me people don't buy this crap. Good thing it was free to read. Could not finish it, it's so bad.

Smoothly written

Typical Diana Palmer story, well presented. Australia setting good. Not your typical cowboy and femme fatale, interesting story about people with money who don't flaunt it.

And he’s cruel too.

John Sterling is quite a few years older than Pricilla Johnson. She has had a crush on him for years and now she is 18 and going off to college in Hawaii. He kisses her goodbye. She wants to tell him she loves him but is afraid he will laugh at her. He doesn't call or write to her so she thinks he's glad she is gone and not running after him anymore she decides not to go home to Australia for Easter. Then he flies to Hawaii and sweeps her off her feet and asks her to marry him she says yes they seem so happy then she calls him because she hasn't heard from him and the things he says to her breaks her heart. They both are confused and hurt and so much has gone on that they hide from each other it is a painful to think they can get back together. John is an Alpha male but more caring. Pris has to do a lot of growing up.

The heart wants what it wants by MeemsAngel82

This was one of my first Diana Palmer books! This one doesn't tie into her Long, Tall Texans series and actually doesn't take place in Texas at all. This was a great story and features a man who is beyond frustrating! Modern woman would be kicking him, as would his Ma! He is a terrible beast at times but his heart if he admits it to himself, is filled with jealousy for the burning want of one woman. His sister's best friend.

He thought he had her all figured out and wanted to have her despite it all. He'd bide his time. But he was so, so wrong about her.

Again, a frustrating piece of work. He was rude and he was crude. But he also could melt her and she couldn't stay away from him. To her shame, she wanted him too. I understand her position. She was head over heels for him and when you feel that way it can be so hard and impossible to keep away from that one person. He, for all his crudeness, was jealous to no end. That did not rationalize his behavior and treatment of her. But he really did care for her and he needed her just as much as she needed him. He did love her and he took his hard edge out on her at times. She could cut him but her nature was more gentle than his. He showed her that he could melt just as well for her. A passionate story with jealousy and feelings that needed to be expressed. Both found it hard and pride often stood in the way and fear. Ultimately the truth comes out and someone goes to get his woman!
