She's half his age. He's her boss and everything she shouldn’t want. One night together to get it out of their systems can’t hurt... right?

After shocking her loved ones by ending her long-term relationship, Maggie Burlington is determined to prove that she can do it all on her own. But juggling a monster house renovation, her parents’ failing business, and her job as personal assistant to the illustrious Calahan Michaelson leaves Maggie with little time for a personal life, let alone romance—not that she’s looking for one.

Like his assistant, Cal couldn’t be less interested in romance. He’s been there, done that, and if Maggie’s face sometimes flashes through his head as he’s drifting off to sleep, then surely it’s just because they spend so much time together. Though, there is the matter of that accidental sex club meeting…

When a night stranded in the office due to bad weather brings Maggie and Cal closer, Maggie must decide if proving she can make it on her own is worth losing the one person who makes her feel less alone.

Legally Binding is a spicy age gap romance. It contains explicit sexual content and sensitive topics. Thorough content warnings can be found on the author’s website.

Sophie Snow lives in Scotland with her husband and cat, Pumpkin (who she loves dearly, even if he does bite.)

She writes spicy romance books with messy, queer characters and too many Taylor Swift references to count. She has been in love with love stories for as long as she can remember, and writing them as songs and novels since she was twelve.

A forest fairy in a past life, Sophie loves spending time in nature, drinking too much coffee, and trying out more hobbies than she can keep up with.

i know you're alarmed because of the full white hair on the cover but he's not that old, he's 54 ☝️

↪ plot:

What do you do when the super hot boss that you're severely attracted to happens to be one night in the sex club you're in, and you can't stop thinking about it weeks later? You fuck him... right? Well no, but that's what Maggie does, leading to them spending more time together and realizing there's more to their feelings than simple attraction.

↪ thoughts:

tw for discussions of death

You need to know that I'm not an age-gap lover. I occasionally enjoy a 10-year age difference when the younger character is in their late 20s or early 30s, but I don't normally go with a bigger gap; this one's really the exception. And that I'm not a fan of daddy kink... like, at all, I practically try to forget it exists whenever it appears in a book I'm reading, but it was somewhat nice (🤪?) to read it in a context where it actually made sense (since, you know, he's way older than her). It was definitely a plus that their sex scenes (and there are quite a number of them) were so well-written that I needed to occasionally take a break to compose myself before continuing.
“You’re cute when you’re flustered, love.” “I’m pretty much always flustered around you these days,” she admitted with a sigh, though it had no weight behind it. “That explains why I’m so distracted all the time.”
I love when I start a romance and instantly get into the main characters and the attraction and sense of belonging they have for and with each other. Maggie and Cal's conversations, actions, and thoughts convinced me they would make their relationship work, regardless of anything that came their way. And I'm not the only one because so many of the secondary characters were so invested in their relationship because of how much they were rooting for them.
"You love me?" she whispered shakily,
"Quite desperately"
I will always cheer for a girl who gets a real man (not a pathetic one with a fragile ego) after breaking up with a loser, and that's exactly what Maggie got; a man who gives her all the love and reassurance she needs. And, just so you know, both the FMC and MMC are bisexual, and as a fellow bi girlie I will always be delighted by pairings where they're both bi, so this was great.
"(...) like waking up in the middle of the night, and just watching him breathe for a while, because she couldn't believe he'd trusted her with his heart."
I appreciated all their discussions about their power imbalance (since she's both his assistant and younger than him), and, as heartbreaking as it was, the amount of time they would have together as a couple. I'm gonna get all sad here but one of the reasons I wouldn't date someone way older than me is that I would hate to lose them a bunch of years earlier than I would if I dated someone my age. And yes, I know that our days are not guaranteed but I'm assuming a natural death by old age. I don't know if anyone else thinks about this too (well, apparently yes, based on this book) whenever they think about age gaps, but I do (as you can tell, I've never been relaxed a day in my life), and it was interesting to see them touch on it.
"They didn't need sixty years, because time stood still when they were together."
★★★★½ stars

(i really said "rtc later today" with my whole chest and i'm only now writing it four months later, i'm such a clown)

↪ pre-review thoughts:

i'm not the biggest fan of big age gaps in romances but i really liked this author's debut, so i had to give this one a chance and it was delicious... and i'm not only talking about the smut but also the development of their relationship. full rtc later today.

This was really sweet and spicy. Finally boss who is not an asshole and actually respects his employees.🙏 I don't have anything bad to say about Cal, he was mature, gentle and honestly perfect. I also liked Maggie, even if I didn't like some of her choices, I could understand them and why is she acting that way.
I am glad that this wasn't just about lust and that we saw how they fell in love.❤️ You can feel how they love and first of all respect each other and there was also a great chemistry between them.
I wish that her parents got some bad karma at the end because they were absolutely the worst.
I am a hater of writing in 3rd person in romance, and I only read in the first person, but I was really tempted by this story, and the reviews were good, and I can say I am not sorry I read this one.🫶

DNF @ 5%. No Rating.

All these glowing ARC reviews are dirty liars.

The hero Cal is supposedly a 55 year old Irish man but there's no hint of an accent or Irish brogue in the dialogue at all. Cal sounds like every other American out there but our heroine is busy swooning over his "sexy Irish accent" at every opportunity and just tickled pink that he calls her "love". 🙄 Oh golly gee, you mean he's Irish cause he uses the endearment "love"? I would have never guessed. Just...No. If your hero is Irish I want to see it, stop having your heroine tell me about the hero's accent. Incredibly lazy writing and flat world building and one-dimensional characters to top it off. Easy no for me.

The irish older guy really ups the ante in this book, especially as he's a total gent who respects the hell out of his much younger assistant Maggie. She's been working for him for 6 years and they have always been professional but when she's newly single and the pair are locked in during a storm, one night, to get it out of their systems, becomes the start of a whole new life for them both.
Of course there are obstacles and the annoying 3rd act break up but because neither of them are actually mean or break each other's heart it's ok let when the predictable but sweet HEA hits and we can swoon in peace knowing they are just perfect together.
I really enjoyed this book and it's wholesome goodness with a heaping dash of spice that wasn't OTT either.

finished this four days ago (I was ill so I can update goodreads only now), and THIS BOOK is THE BESTE ROMANCE I'VE READ IN A WHILE!! I'll publish the review as soon as I fell better but in the meantime I can say that it will definitely be among my favourite romance books of 2024!
REVIEW
Best romance of 2024 (I already know it) and definitely on my list of favorite books. This book is truly perfect! I had already read the first novel published by the author, so I already knew what to expect in terms of writing style and narrative style. I had been hyped for this read for months, even before knowing the final cover and I had very high expectations. Usually, as a reader, if I start a book with high expectations I end up disappointed; this time, however, this book managed to exceed them!
Maggie is the finest main character: throughout the book we see her growing, maturing, achieving the independence she craved for and, at the end of the book, she becomes the best version of herself. Her chapters are my absolute favorite. I loved reading this story from her point of view - she's lively, adorable and sweet. And Cal, I fell in love with him straight away! The chemistry between the two characters is immediately perceptible, certainly the most successful element of the book. Several times I found myself with bated breath and rapid heartbeat, completely involved in their story. I really loved every single chapter, every single page and now I will live my life just waiting for another Sophie’s book to read!

I previously dnf this but decided to pick it up again, the last 30% was actually better than the rest, even tho the TWO breakups were a bit stupid they made the book more interesting since, like I said before, nothing was happening.
My previous review still stands

dnf 67%
I was going to force myself to finish this but I couldn’t. I lost interest around 40%, nothing was happening, it didn’t feel forbidden and there was no tension, like Cal is her boss and much older than her but I didn’t feel anything.
Also he is 55 but gets into a “coworker with benefits” relationship with Maggie (?) like you are a grown up.
Also I dnf at the third act breakup that was absolutely stupid.
I’m actually sad that I wasn’t enjoying it because it’s a series that I want to read, so I’ll probably give a chance and continue the series especially because the third book is a sapphic romance

Safety notes:
- huge age gap: H is 55 and h is 27
- no cheating
- no OW: Cal is close to his ex wife (who’s married with a woman now) tho
- OM (?): Maggie kept mentioning her loser ex + they breakup because Liam, Cal’s son who’s not aware of their relationship, asks Maggie out and Cal thinks he’s a better fit for her and Maggie actually accept the invitation but then cancel
- Maggie has been into Cal for a while but stayed with the ex for 5 years out of 6 she was working with Cal
- Cal was a regular sex club client and occasionally dated before his “relationship” with Maggie but it isn’t clear if he did these things while being into her

Super bummed I’m not connecting with this one. My biggest issue is that it doesn’t feel like this author should have referenced that our hero belongs to a sex club because there is zero proof this guy knows anything about kink. I’m 50% done and it’s such a normal contemporary romance. Lots of closed door, no dom/sub themes, fast forwarding to “can’t we make it with this age gap”. Maybe I might try again later but I’m trying to do better with keeping track of authors who might not connect with my style.

Thank you so much to Sophie Snow for the arc in exchange for an honest review!

I'm such a huge fan of Sophie's work and how she's able to create real characters who love to communicate openly with their partners, I witnessed this in her debut, The Rule of Three, and it's no different in Legally Binding! I can be very hesitant with large age gaps in books like this one, but thankfully, it's not something that becomes a constant conversation like what I often find with this trope. Sophie handles their relationship with such openness and respect in the way that Cal constantly checks in with Maggie to ensure she's feeling safe and comfortable. They are continuously honest with each other in regards to their emotions and what they want from their relationship and their lives - it's refreshing to read and I adore every second of their dialogue.

This book is honest, sexy and oh so spicy. I was rooting for these two from the second I saw them on the page together for the first time. I adored this book and I'm so, so excited for the rest of this series. I can't wait for Sophie's 2024 releases!

This book had a lot of my favorite tropes and I wanted to love it but it was just too predictable. And there was no tension, they have sex on his desk in his office without a care in the world if anyone will notice??? And for him going to a sex club regularly you’d think he’d have more kinks than knee high socks and being called Daddy.

Legally Binding is the first book in the Spicy in Seattle series. This is a spicy workplace, age-gap romance. As always, please check all content and trigger warnings.

Maggie, 27, was in a 6-year relationship with her ex, Nathan, but ended it when Nathan asked to marry her. She has a huge heart but deals with loved ones who disagree with her decision-making and take advantage of her kindness. Maggie works as the personal assistant for Calahan 'Cal' Michaelson. She has been pining after Cal for a long time.

Cal, 55, is a sexy silver fox with an Irish accent. He is the firm's co-owner, is genuinely nice, and pays Maggie well. Although he knows Maggie is younger than him, he has been pining after her since she started working for him. Maggie was in a relationship, so he never pursued anything, but once he found out Maggie was no longer with Nathan, the door was open.

I am a sucker for the age gap trope. I enjoyed this story so much! Legally Binding has all the ingredients of a perfect romance book. The story is well-written, and the characters are well-developed. All of the tropes were done well, and the more complex topics were handled with care. I loved Cal and Maggie's relationship. It was very realistic, and they took the time to address the real-life implications of their significant age difference. Cal and Maggie's chemistry is off the charts! Cal is the sweetest, and I loved their intimate moments. I enjoyed witnessing their growth as individual characters and as a couple.

This was a fun read, and I can’t wait for more from Sophie Snow.

Thank you, Sophie Snow, for providing me with an e-ARC. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Legally Binding, by Sophie Snow

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

📚 8/70 📚

Everything about this book deserves a 5 star review. Maggie’s character development felt so real, I had to remind myself that she isn’t a friend who lives down the road, but is in fact living within the pages of this book.

Maggie and Cal’s relationship delves into some tropes that I hadn’t read before; but now I know why they’re so popular!

Definately read the trigger warnings beforehand - something I suggest when reading any romance to be honest!

🍀 Age gap relationship
🖌️ Daddy kink
🍀 Boss and employee
🖌️ One night to get it out their systems
🍀 He falls first

And a whole load of pinky promises, which are in fact legally binding 🫶🏻

“”There’s a sense of peace in knowing exactly your place in the world, when your place is beside someone else. But every day with him is just as exciting as it was the day he first held my hand, even if we’re just sitting at home watching the world go by.””

“She’s spent her whole life serving people who have never appreciated her, dad. It must have scared her shitless to have you suddenly trying to take care of her. It sounds like she was neglected as a kid, and her ex took advantage of her to get what he wanted and gave nothing in return. She probably doesn’t know what it feels like to be taken care of.”

"Pinky promise, they're legally binding"

Such a cute book. Maggie is this 27 year old assistant at a law firm. Her boss Cal is 55 and a silver fox. I honestly loved that it started off with them running into each other at a sex club of all places. And then they are trapped during a storm together. Their relationship slowly blossomed into such a loving relationship and I was here for it.

I didn't love their third act breakup. It honestly felt unnecessary and I found myself so annoyed at Maggie. I get that her relationship with her family and the relationship she had with her ex really broke her and made her believe that she didn't deserve good things or that people aren't always genuine. But it also seemed like Maggie even admitted that things were different between Cal and her ex. So breaking up with Cal just seemed like a cop-out to add some sort of conflict.

I also thought it was odd that the chapters were labeled per MC POV but the book was written in third person and didn't exactly need 'Maggie' or 'Cal' at the beginning of each chapter to understand the POV.

Everything I want in a workplace romance!

Overall rating: 4.5/5
Spice level: 4/5

This is a story that had me giggling, blushing, and rooting for the two lovebirds. I absolutely adore the characterization of Maggie and Cal. Maggie is someone who is very relatable to me and Cal, of course, was a heartthrob from the start. Their attraction to each other and the the way their relationship was built felt natural and very swoon-worthy to me. Without giving much away, let's just say that there are a lot of benefits to an age gap like this!

Apart from the romance, this is also a story heavily centered around Maggie and her growth as she is finally finding herself.

I recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of workplace romance, age gap, boss x assistant, workaholic fmc, and an Irish cinnamon roll hero.

Super predictable and cliche writing style. While I don’t mind age gaps in romance, I’m not a huge fan of the daddy kink. I also found Cal to be very immature for 55. The way he spoke just didn’t connect with his age at all.

This book just wasn’t for me. It was 🤏🏼 to becoming a DNF.

Legally Binding is the first instalment in the Spicy in Seattle series by author Sophie Snow. But juggling a monster house renovation, her parents’ failing business, and her job as personal assistant to the illustrious Calahan Michaelson leaves Maggie with little time for a personal life, let alone romance—not that she’s looking for one. I think one of the best things about discovering new and upcoming authors is the clean slate. No past experiences, no expectations. I can go into a brand new story with fresh eyes and a keen excitement to discover new writing. Author Sophie Snow has blew me away with Legally Binding, to the extent that I'm truly awed that this is only her second book release. The pacing in this book was consistent throughout. The dialogue was both heartfelt and seductive. Vulnerable and secure. Emotional and gripping. I picked this up with the intentions of casually making my way through it as release day is still two months away... and yet I found I could not put it down. Snow' seamlessly navigates the various kinks that are discovered and explored throughout Maggie and Cal's sexual encounters with the upmost care and respect. Consent is sexy. I was genuinely thrilled and almost emotional to read as consent was meticulously and clearly established on both sides, which helped balance the well-discussed power imbalance between the pair. The various discussions and mentions of consent throughout these scenes added an emotional sense of vulnerability and safety which helped me, as a reader, to better connect with Maggie and Cal throughout these scenes. I'm so impressed with Legally Binding and I look forward to what's next for the author.

Maggie was an absolute gem of a heroine. Her inability to say no to favours around her gave me the perfect insight to the kind of character she is. To her core, Maggie is a people pleaser. A kind, genuine, well-meaning people pleaser. Unfortunately this often comes to her own expense as she runs herself ragged trying to be present for the people around her, often neglecting her own needs. We truly follow Maggie on a journey as she better learns not only what her boundaries are, but also how to best establish them. Her authoritative voice is often drowned out by the needs of others, and I was truly proud to watch her development grow with the support of Cal and her best friend Jazz. Jazz is the perfect side-character and friend that Maggie needs. Her chaotic and excitable nature is the perfect opposite to balance Maggie, and her relentless love and support for her was much needed during that emotionally tumultuous second half. And without spoiling the context to the plot... I was cheering in the end when Maggie finally stood up for herself. It was a much needed confrontation, and she is truly far better off.

Cal is exactly what you could hope for in an older, silver fox hero. As a part-owner to a prestigious law-firm in Seattle, Cal knows what he wants and what he needs to do in order to achieve it. His assertive position is never used as an abuse of power, as the employees that work under him hold a great respect for their superior. Cal is a fair and kind man that treats his employees well and acts in defence to any of his employees that are mistreated by fellow staff and clients alike. I really respect how the author makes note of the obvious professional power imbalance that exists between Cal and Maggie. This opens a line of healthy and mature conversations between both main characters who acknowledge the logistics of their relationship and actively work to keep things balanced. Cal is exactly the kind of man that is right for Maggie, but most of all I was grateful to see that Cal holds a genuine trust and respect for Maggie in a professional manner before their relationship begins. His devotion and care for Maggie was palpable through the pages, and I was truly rooting for their relationship from beginning to end.

I truly had the absolute best time reading this book. I was engrossed in the author's writing-style to the point that I could not put it down. This is a must read for all romance lovers, and as always please check your trigger warnings to best decide if this is a book for you.

Thank you to Sophie Snow for the DRC (digital review copy) in exchange for an honest review prior to release day.

Pinkie Promise?

Maggie is a type A, workaholic. She's the assistant keeping the entire law firm running smoothly. Cal is her boss. The man she's had a crush on for the past 6 years.

One night, stranded at the office during a torrential rain storm starts this forbidden love affair. Maggie is newly single and not looking for a relationship. Cal hasn't had a real relationship in years. Casual? They can do casual. Until feelings develop.

Maggie's parents are awful. I hate them more than Nathan, and Nathan is terrible. Maggie deserved more and better. Luckily, Cal was there to be her steady, supportive rock. But can Maggie accept it?

This is my first book from Sophie Snow and I have to say that it was surprisingly nice.

Maggi works as Cal's assistant in his law firm. She has had a crush on him since she started working for him, but she never thought that he could reciprocate her feelings. She has also had a boyfriend for the last couple of years. But as soon as she broke up with him, she realized her desire for him. Cal, on the other hand, never dreamed of the possibility that Maggie could be attracted to him.

When they finally started their relationship, it was going so smoothly that even I couldn't complain. The only problem was that Maggie was still holding herself and not being fully committed to their love. Which is understandable. Cal was really sweet with her and was doing his best to break down her walls. His calmness and his commitment to her were the things that finally made her see that their love was worth it.

I was really happy with the spice between those two. Every single one of their scenes was so hot and steamy, and I loved it 🌶️.

There was one thing that bothered me. I love reading age-gap books, but the age difference between them was quite big for my liking. Even so, that didn't make their story less alluring.

Overall, I really enjoyed the love story between Maggie and Cal ♥️.

Read if you like: age gap (28 years), daddy link, workplace romance, boss x assistant, “one night to get it out of our systems”, forced proximity, he falls first and hard, Irish cinnamon roll mmc, one bed

Maggie accidentally runs into Cal at a sex club. Cal is her boss, he’s the nicest and most genuine guy, and Maggie has been his assistant for 6 years. When Cal shows some protectiveness over her at the club, it sparks up an attraction they’ve both been denying for years.

I’m obsessed with the way he calls her love 🥹 he was an acts of service man and sounded so hot!! I thought they were so good together

What I was annoyed about was the fact that Cal had to chase her and fix things. I never see the fmc go after the guy tbh, and it was her fk up, she decided she wanted to be alone but didn’t go after him. It worked out that they were both heading towards each other but I still wanted her to come to him 😤

Overall a great book and would recommend!

Legally Binding ARC Review

i was very fortunate to receive an ARC of Legally Binding by Sophie Snow. All opinions are my own and given freely.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
🌶️🌶️.5/5

content warning: legally binding is an adult novel that features explicit content and some topics that may be triggering for some readers. the following is a list of topics featured in legally binding: age gap relationship, alcohol, blood/injury, boss/employee relationship, body modification (nipple piercings), controlling relationship (former), drug use (mentioned), explicit language, explicit sexual content (biting, bondage, daddy kink, fingering, masturbation, oral sex, orgasm denial, rough sex, spanking, vaginal sex, voyeurism), misogyny, parental neglect, pregnancy (past) and discussions of remaining child free, smoking, workplace sexual harassment.

“a pinky promise, those are legally binding.”

i was never really a huge age gap trope girly BUT this book changed my mind!! and i definitely i think it had a lot to do with how the characters were written as well as the flow of the story. though there was some cringe-worthy scenes, nothing felt forced to me and i really appreciated that. also i don’t think the daddy kink is for me, it’s very off putting to me, however i actually didn’t mind it too much in this book!

maggie is a people pleaser and has always made everyone else’s needs a priority. she’s willing to drop everything she’s doing and fix everyone’s problems. the way her parents treated her, despite everything she’s done for them, absolutely broke my heart. and her ex, infuriated me so much!! but as we come to learn more about maggie, we start to see her come into her own and finally stand up for herself!! i really thing sophie did an amazing job with her character development!!

cal is a good man! he really cares about everyone around him and ensures that everyone feels supported. from the beginning you can truly tell that cal cares deeply for maggie and wants nothing but the best in life for her. he supported her in so many different ways and was understanding and so patient with her.

maggie and cal’s relationship was sweet from the beginning. cal never forced maggie to do anything she wasn’t comfortable with and maggie wasn’t shy when it came to telling cal what she wanted. any scene with them together had me giggling and kicking my feet in the air! the pinky promises were the cutest! and all their colleagues confessing they had suspicions maggie and call were together was hilarious and i loved that part so much!! i was honestly rooting for maggie and cal from beginning to end!

i really loved getting to know and fall in love with characters!! i cannot wait to read the sophie’s future work and once again thank you much for giving me the chance to read legally binding early! 💚
