I don't think I've ever had a book as hard to review as this one! There were things I loved and things that were terrible about it so I feel very conflicted about how many stars I should give it. "Giving into the Game" is this author's first book so I tried to keep that in mind while reading it.
Storyline = 5 stars for sure. The drama and angst were off the charts and I really enjoy that in a book. There was so much going on I had a really hard time putting it down! I loved that it was set in northern Australia with Aboriginal characters. I stopped reading several times to look up information about the places Sophia and Rueben lived in and visited as well as to learn more about Australian football.
Reuben = 5 stars. He was so awesome and tragic at the same time. Passionate, honest and a human who made mistakes. I absolutely loved his character!!
Sophie = 1 star, if that. She was constantly contradicting herself, refusing to admit how she felt and what was going on between her and Reuben. For a psychologist she was pretty oblivious to her own thoughts and feelings. The fact that she purposely set up roadblocks for herself really had me puzzled. She was incredibly annoying!
Editing = 1 star. I don't think I've ever read a book that had poorer editing. Every. Single. Sentence. Had. Mistakes. Every single one of them. Spelling errors, swapping one word for another (like "where" for "wear"), constant changes in tense, punctuation mistakes, pretty much any error that could be made, was made. Even if there wasn't any editing done on this book and it was just written, then published, I still can't figure out how there could have been so many errors. Was it on purpose?
Writing = 1 star. Even though I really enjoyed the story, the writing itself was pretty bad. It could be confusing at times because one thing would be happening, then the story would go off on a tangent that didn't really have any point. Some things were explained in way too much detail (like the clothes Sophie wore, WAY too much information there!) and some things were repeated over and over again. Most of the time it felt clunky and rough. It was like someone with severe ADD was doing the writing.
Even with all the things that were wrong with this book, I still think the author did a great job with the actual story and the characters themselves. I'll definitely read another of hers!!
Wow!!!!! What a book! I've never read a book that has completely and totally consumed me ! The plot, the characters, the intensity and the total amazement of feeling every emotion that Soph and Rueben felt. The characters were developed faultlessly which is why it was so captivating and addictive! I have serious book depression now that it's ended! I would love to see more from Reuben's perspective! Wouldn't this make an incredible Australian movie! This is as good if not better than Jamie McGuire's best seller Beautiful Disaster!
