**This book is part of the Pulp Friction 2014 Collection**
Scott refuses to accept his mistake dealt a final blow to his troubled relationship with Rob, so he’s working hard to finish the apartment he plans for them to share. With odd occurrences of vandalism, a poacher, and an increasingly active inner demon named PTSD, he has plenty to keep him busy while he waits for Robby to come around.
Rob is working a lot of overtime in order to qualify for a new position as a wildland firefighter—a minor detail he decides to withhold in light of Scott’s frequent nightmares. Of course there are a couple of other details Scott has a right to know about—if only Robby hasn’t left things too late.
Just as one man discovers his truth—the other realizes everything he’s believed is a lie. One is certain they can work things out—the other knows why they can’t. Only one of them can be right.
Augh I do not like Robby at all. And wtf!! Scotty can get sooo much better believe me there are enough hot gay men around to chose from. Why do you keep pining after this douche?
I know, I know, y'all are so tired of hearing me say this, but I can't help it. I think I'm beginning to see where this 2014 Pulp Friction - four series, twenty books, four different authors—is going…oh hell, who am I kidding? I have no clue! Here, in 'Backburn', Laura Harner's third installment within her portion of the series, the author is just teasing me. I think she derives a very perverse pleasure in watching me squirm at the end of her hook. Well, Laura, and a few others which shall not be named,*cough* Havan, Lee, and Tom *cough*.
In this third book I'm getting more and more history, especially with Robby, and getting information about where he disappears to once a month for the weekend. There are also more issues for Scott to deal with as his PTSD and nightmares become worse. Of course, there's always a little mystery going on and this time it revolves around a dead deer found close to a Mountain Shadows hiking trail. Poor little Maddy, she didn't need to see that. Scott didn't need to go investigating all by himself, either, particularly when it puts him just a little too close to his neighbor, a somewhat radical, grizzled old mountain man.
I would love to be able to say that Scott and Robby got all their issues dealt with, but I'd be lying. Hence the accusation of giant tease, Laura! Somehow, I get a little more each time but I'm left wanting. Apparently I have a need to be tortured or I'd wait until the whole series was out and read them all at once. Nah. No way I could wait that long. So, Robby revealed a few more surprises that Scott wasn’t exactly thrilled he'd kept secret. But, some danger and a run-in with their neighbor shows Robby how much he still loves Scott.
So, Laura, next book, please? I'm ready. I'm just waiting. I'm twiddling my thumbs. Just waiting. Patiently. Not.
Buddy Read with Mish and Sandi. We did this last year and figured it would be fun to do it again. Reading the entire Pulp Friction series in the month of February, one installment a day. I'll review at the end.
My last review of Laura Harner’s Fighting Fire Series Book #2 Controlled Burn was written with duct tape across my mouth (and fingers) So many important things happened in that story line that the reader didn’t expect. How could you? As a reviewer I could not in good faith put to paper much of what occurred in this story, as it would be a major no no to other readers and to the author as well divulging such an important spoiler.
I mention this, sitting here with hay fever trying to breathe thru my nose, duct tape again binding my lips. The snorting is not pretty. Laura Laura Laura, I can tell everyone the weather is getting better in Arizona, I can say it was certainly great to see Robby and Scott again, that it was wonderful reading the smoldering scene between them. You have put me at a great disadvantage, so I again am forced to describe what Pulp Friction is all about and hope those reading this review will accept the fact that again this story brings me to my knees.
Pulp Friction is the joining of four authors, each writing their own series of short stories and releasing them every two weeks with cliff hangers. Their rotation makes the reader get this story every 2 months. Laura’s opened in January, then March and now May all the 15th.
The opening was strong as we met Robby and Scott. Scott was a fire fighter and almost died as 29 of his brothers perished in a blaze that had Scott seriously injured. Robby was called because Scott had never changed his IF I AM INJURED CALL card. Ten years had passed and the circumstances of their breakup are very sad. But, now their being thrown together again has given the reader hope for a wonderful conclusion.
Mountain Shadows Campground is Scott’s new home and Robby brings him there and stays getting a job in the area…..Ms Harner lulled us into that quiet sense of ‘we knew where this was going’ and took a mallet to us and beat us over the head with it….
Need to take the tape off, so I will let you all read this for yourselves, if you should disagree contact me if you think I was dead wrong. This is one wonderful read ! Please also follow the series with me as Lee Brazil, Havan Fellows and Tom Webb’s stories in this series Rock as well….See you in 2 weeks.
Review by Gloria Lakritz Sr Reviewer and Review Chair for the Paranormal Romance Guild
Scott and Robby spend a lot of time avoiding each other in this installment, but they do actually seem to make some progress toward their HEA. And, Robby isn't the only one keeping secrets at this point. I'm kind of ready to smack them both for not addressing their issues. It seems the only place the communicate well is in bed (and they do well there, for sure).
Scott feels incredibly guilty for both outing Robby to his parents all those years ago and for not understanding or accepting that Robby is bisexual. So it takes him a while to figure out that it doesn't matter. Scott's PTSD has been getting worse, too, and he's not coping well.
Meanwhile, Robby feels guilt and self loathing because his very religious parents never accepted him. Even after marrying a woman and having children, they were awful to him. Frankly, continuing a relationship with his parents was unhealthy. But he seems to at least make some progress toward Scott.
This book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, making me wish for the next book NOW!
This book is part of the Pulp Friction 2014 Collection( book 9) and also part of a series by Laura Harner. It is the 3rd book in the fighting fire book. You really do need to read all the books in the series in order, but don’t have to read all the collection stories to follow along, though it does help to get a better knowledge of the other characters mentioned.
Robbie is trying to deal with his secret, since in a couple of weeks he will be bringing it with him or going to where it’s at. That decision will also affect what job offer he takes. Scott is getting better physically but his nightmares are getting worse. He is still dealing with learning to run the campground and is trying to get it ready for actual visitors.
I really love this series. One of the things I like most is the complications of Scott and Robbie’s relationship. It is definitely not run of the mill. I also like the angst and the feelings they share. I can’t wait to see if they ever get on the same page. There were a few twists in this one that had me biting my nails and my jaw dropping.
If you like series, interactive characters, hot firemen, a little mystery, a lot of suspense, jaw-dropping surprises, and some hot mansex this is definitely for you! I received a free copy of this book through MMgoodbookreviews for an honest review http://mmgoodbookreviews.wordpress.com/
The drama of Scott and Robby continues and their issues intensify in this third story of the Fighting Fire series within Pulp Friction 2014. The little band of residents of Mountain Shadows is coalescing and becoming almost a family but certainly a band of friends who care for and watch out for each other. Robby is facing up to the consequences of not telling Scott about his late wife and his children. Scott is not only hurt by the revelation but scared that this may mean he's not Robby's love, something Scott really needs. Scott's nightmares about the fire that killed his team are not abating and are causing his tremendous guilt that he didn't do enough to save everyone. We still haven't seen Danny, the other survivor and I'm beginning to wonder why. There is an important piece of the puzzle in Danny's story and recovery and hopefully we'll find that in the next book. I love this series and look forward eagerly to each installment.
This is heart wrenching. I've read this, or rather these, three times now. What a series so far. I know each author is writing their own characters in their own series but Pulp Friction 2014 is so well done you can't help but get involved with all the characters.
Rob and Scott just can't seem to get on the same page, or schedule. Hell, they can't even talk!
Scott's PTSD is getting worse, he isn't dealing with the guilt over losing his teammates in Prescott and Danny's injuries.
Rob finally admits to himself how he feels about Scott but revealing the secrets he has been keeping doesn't go over well.
They do reconnect in bed (yummy) but Rob's secrets tears them apart again.
Then arson is added to the list of problems plaguing Mountain Shadows.
Finally, finally we’re getting somewhere. No more running away, which happened at the end of the previous two installments. No more secret keeping—well, on Rob’s part anyway. And finally giving in. I’m all about Rob’s epiphany in this story. His revelation about his feelings and where he needs to be has been a long time coming, now if we can only get Scott on the same page, I think we’ll find a happy ending at the end of this series.
Argh!! These cliffies will be the death of me. Another hair raising and nail biting instalment of this year's Pulp Friction, poor Scotty....BUT at least he and Rob seem to be on the same page now, woohoo!! That is, if they survive the next 2 books hehe...5 stars from me, great series of stories Laura. Many thanks.
At first, I was afraid we would be seeing shades of Remy and Jamie, and although it may not be smooth sailing from here on out, the angst factor is not quite as bad as I originally thought.
