Fear and Loathing in the horsing sports, this would seem to have been a natural for a Louisville, Kentucky, boy. Hunter S. Thompson worked for 15 years on this unfinished novel that had been slated for publication in 1999 but mysteriously never was. It was even assigned an ISBN number, which is why it is listed here. Photos exist of several pages pinned on Hunter's wall cork boards. Where it is now I have no idea.
People in his inner circle who read it said it was very promising. One of Hunter's editors and assistants, Shelby Sadler, said the idea came from a young polo player that Hunter had flirted with. In response to his suggestion that he and the polo player elope, she said no, because, "Polo is my life." The idea obsessed him, Sadler said, because the excuse was just a variation of every rejection he'd ever had from women. According to Sadler, the polo player and her aspirations reminded Hunter of Daisy Buchanan in Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, his favorite novel, and it would be his chance to write a Fitzgerald-like story.
Some people on here have "rated" this book. I'm assuming they're rating the excerpts that were published in Rolling Stone (which I haven't read). The excerpt is printed in the omnibus compendium, Fear and Loathing at Rolling Stone, which is on future reserve at my library and is available as an ebook.
If there's a more complete renegade copy of it anywhere on the internet, I wouldn't mind being clued in.
