Magic is real. So are monsters. And Izzie Berens is the one who hunts them down.
When a series of violent attacks shakes Austin’s magical district, Paranormal Defense Agent Izzie Berens and her partner, Rafe, are called in to investigate. The evidence points to a rogue shapeshifter—one with the terrifying ability to mimic anyone it touches. As the body count rises and the city teeters on the brink of chaos, Izzie and Rafe uncover a chilling someone is using dark magic to destabilize the fragile balance between humans and magical beings.
The chase takes them through Austin’s hidden supernatural underworld, where danger lurks behind every shadow and alliances are never what they seem. But when a dramatic rooftop confrontation ends with the shapeshifter escaping—and leaving behind a powerful amulet pulsing with ancient energy—Izzie realizes she’s no longer just tracking a rogue magical. She’s hunting something far worse.
And it’s only getting started.

Okay, I'm a late bloomer who's a big DC comics fan and spent my childhood summers on the Jersey shore but I was born under a wandering star and have lived in different parts of America ever since. That's enough about me. Need to feel inspired today? Looking for something to make you root for an ordinary hero? I'm all about that in everything I write.
I love a good tale that makes me wonder about things and I love a story even more that leaves me feeling inspired or like I'm capable of doing more than I realized. That's my goal with everything I've ever written. Some of the stories I tell involve twisting, turning thrillers and others have a lot of magic.
There's something to be said for getting lost in another world and coming out the other side feeling a little better about yourself or the possibilities in front of you. That's basically the best part of life in a nutshell, no matter what kind of story I'm setting out to tell.
The story felt a bit flat, needed some humor, a constant stream of serious conflict, throughout becomes monotonous. Could have used some Yumfuck like charm. Izzie seems too serious, unlike her younger self or her parents.
Normally these two authors are incredible. However, the fight scenes were too wimpy. I found myself routing for the bad guy. Got 60% through before I jumped ship. I suspect Martha wrote the fight scenes.
This is the first in a new series, it is not bad, Izzie is continuing the Oriceran/Earth link and magic, she and Rafe are drawn in to a situation where a magical killed with magic means and as she looks in to who the shapeshifter that did it is, she is drawn to memories of childhood and her only two actual friends. Izzie does manage to deal with it of course, this is book one, but the Arcane Syndicate is a threat is one that is going to grow and come back to get her. Izzie has strong magic and she managed to use ancient technology and prevent it blowing up an entire neighbourhood, but she might well need to start to learn more magic and stocking up on defence because Rafe and Pearl are only the beginning of her weaknesses and her past is all about dealing with dark wizards, the Arcane or something more than that.
I couldn't wait to read another series from the Oriceran universe. I was really interested in a series about Izzie after reading The School of Necessary Magic as well as the Leira Chronicles. I admit that I struggled through the first part of the book. It wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I continued reading anyway. By the end, I liked the book. The characters are on their way to becoming more fleshed out, and the storyline makes more sense. I'm glad that I stuck it out.
What I would like to know pertains to Izzie after the Leira Chronicles and the Alison Brownstone series until this series about Izzie. When the Leira series ends, Izzie hasn't been born. Then Izzie is at the School of Necessary Magic with no memories of her past. After that, Izzie is on the run from the dark magicals and occasionally helping her friend Alison. I feel like I'm missing something.
It is always nice to revisit old friends, and it is great to see Izzie Berens once again. And now the little girl is all grown up and following in her parents' footsteps. In the same way that it works for Alison Brownstone moving on, I am really looking forward to where this series is going to go. Hey Mike and Martha, I'm expecting at least a quick visit from or to Alison, we haven't seen her in a while, and the school friends really know how to kick ass together. Roll on the next book.
At the beginning of this book, I thought some things were kind of odd, but they got explained a little bit more as the story progressed. it did seem like there was stuff in here that really didn’t need to be in here. It was just more of a filler. I also felt that Izzy got a little bit cocky at the end. as Izzy and her partner are trying to hunt down the Shapeshifter that is causing havoc in the city, they realize that he is probably a small problem within a bigger problem. I will be reading the next book in the series.
I really enjoyed Leira's series, and her daughter Izzie's when she went to her magical school. Now Izzie is all grown up and working for the PDA. In this series we have a new organization trying to change the world in the wrong way and it will be up to Izzie, her friends, and the PDA to stop them. This first book in the series was great and I look forward to the new stories that follow.
This is a good book set in a really fun universe. I am glad there are stories following the further adventures of Izzie as she definitely was a good character is previous books that needed more time to shine. And shine she did in this book, lots of magic, action, and investigation all rolled into a fun book. I enjoyed reading this book and I recommend it and ant other books in this universe.
It was worth waiting for. I often wondered about Izzie, there was so much mystery surrounding her when she attended the School of necessary Magic. Now we’re finding out what came after. Enjoyed the book and looking forward to learning more about Izzie.
Izzie Berens is now an agent for the PDA in Austin along with her partner Rafe. A shapeshifter has killed a magical and they are on his trail. Their hunt takes many twists and turns.
Looking forward to the next book. Izzie is grown up and working for the good guys. She is still mentally recovering from being hunted by the dark magicals. Now a new dark organization has come to her home town.
I have read other series from these authors and enjoyed them much more. But then I am not young or male, and prefer less basic language and more detailed descriptions. Bottom line, I picked the wrong book to read.
Totally enjoyed it! This is a well written and has well developed characters. The story is catching and with the strong characters makes for a very enjoyable read. Great Reading Everyone!
