Exterminating Angel

Rate this book
Making a deal with the Devil is the least of his problems.

Zaphkiel, a chain-smoking, hard-drinking archangel, never intended to unleash the sun demon upon the city. Bad enough his boss wants him dead, and this recent crime is the perfect excuse. The timing couldn’t be worse. Somehow, Zaphkiel’s executed lover, Caliel, is alive and reincarnated as Sean. Zaphkiel is thrilled to be reunited with Caliel again, but will his lover feel the same when he learns Zaphkiel’s darkest secret?

Hired by Lucifer, Sean wants nothing more than to fit in. But how can he compete when the Devil’s friends include archangels and a Tarot reader, and he was born without special abilities? Or so he believes. The Tarot hints there may be more to him than he realizes.

Recruited by the Devil to find the two pentacles sun demon Sorath plans to use to destroy the universe, Zaphkiel and Sean find themselves pawns in a game of power and control. If the archangel gives his boss the pentacles, Ophaniel will overlook his crime. But Zaphkiel knows he can’t trust either Ophaniel or Sorath, and the deal he’s made with the Devil could cost him not only his life, but also the lover he believed gone forever.

M/M sexual practices, occult themes, some violence, graphic descriptions.

From the book description, I was hoping for a snarky and intriguing main character, one with issues and a past but with the ultimate characterization showing his loyalty, determination and even some conflicted emotions. What I got was a story with so many characters introduced in quick succession, all with arcane and confusing names, it was hard to keep them straight. And the multiple agendas all trying to come together and provide a story that never did, for me, tie up neatly.

Zaphkiel is the main character, with best ‘friend’ Raziel. Then there is Archangel Michael, Ophaniel, Lucifer, Caliel (who knows himself as Sean and is Zaphkiel’s dead lover, executed by Ophaniel) Kurt a misguided murdering man who summoned the demon Sarath, a hunt for pentacles that must be found before the Venus Transit (never really defined as to timeframe) to halt the destruction of heaven.

Confused yet? That is the first 3 chapters – 10% in. I found myself taking notes and re-reading: the characters were all rather interchangeable with the exception of Z’s long-standing ill feelings about his lover, Caliel’s, execution many years ago. None of these ‘angels’ are actually particularly relatable, and with so many different sub-plots happening in the story there were too many questions left at the end.

This was a story that at 161 pages dragged and jumped forward in alternating bits: missing depth of character and actual reason behind some of the choices made that kept me uninterested but plugging along hoping for a resolution and answers that never came.

I received an eBook copy from the publisher for purpose of honest review for the Jeep Diva. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

I a huge fan of books with supernatural characters so I was looking forward to reading the Exterminating Angel. I was so disappointed though. It was so hard to get into the story because half of the time you're basically trying to comprehend what's happening throughout the story. So overall, the book wasn't for me with confusing story lines, forgettable plot and no chemistry between the characters. At one point I was thinking of just ditching this book and not finishing it.

I enjoy paranormal and M/M romance, so thought this would be a good selection for me. Somehow though I didn't really gel with it – I read it, enjoyed parts but it wasn't one I’d re read and it didn't move me emotionally. I need that from a romance.
Anyway the Angels: in this book they certainly don't behave in the way convention says. They drink, smoke, swear, some even hang out with Lucifer....and there's bitching, back biting and ambition among some of them. Zaph fell victim to that centuries ago, when Ophaniel wanted his position as leader. He waited til Zaph was out of the way and executed his lover Caliel. Homosexuality was forbidden to the angels and Ophaniel saw that as a way of forcing Zaph to step down leaving him as leader....just like most office politics really isn't it ?
Zaph has never forgotten Caliel, and now Lucifer has an assistant that is Caliel reincarnated, though he thinks he's a human called Sean. Zaph's on Ophaniels bad side yet again, and facing a death sentence for unwittingly releasing a demon, who want to bring about the end of the world...Its all action, play-offs against each other, and a manic search for the Pentacles that must be kept away from the released Demon.
Its kind of hard to say why this didn't work for me, its well written, has some interesting characters and plot twists, somehow though I just didn't get pulled into the story, wasn't invested in either the romance ( I like the slow build up, the simmering tension of attraction, but this was – they meet, kiss and are in bed. Or so it seemed ) or that search for the pentacles, and killing the Demon. I think it was just the plots seemed very superficial, not a lot of depth, on the other hand if what you want to read is something light and fluffy, fun and with a bit of spice, and something that's not going to require deep thinking this is perfect. There's times when that's what we want, when we don't have time to get into a book we simply can't put down, when we need one we can put aside, and pick up later when time allows without losing the plot.
Stars: Three – an OK read but not one I'd re read.

Zaphkiel is lost inside himself.

Still reeling centuries later from the execution of his lover Caliel, his heart is an empty black place. Being an archangel doesn’t help matters.

Despite being an angel, he lives to cause as much hurt to the darkness as he carries inside of him. When Zaphkiel and his partner, Raziel, learn that there might be a demon inhabiting the body of a mortal, they go to investigate. Thinking he’s making quick work of the problem, Zaphkiel kills the mortal, unleashing the demon upon the city.

Complicating matters is the fact that now his boss, Ophaniel, is after Zaphkiel to execute him. He goes to Lucifer with one demand: make him a fallen angel. Lucifer agrees and introduces him to Sean. What Zaphkiel doesn’t know is that Sean is actually his lover, Caliel, reincarnated.

Being an angel used to be easy. Now? It’s a full time job that might just get him killed…

I flat out loved this book. It’s hard to believe that it’s Turner’s first time writing M/M romance. The passion leaps off the page and she’s created the perfect bad boy we love to love in Zaphkiel.

More than that, the plot is incredible. It touches on so many things: reincarnation, the Tarot, what’s right and wrong and where our choices lead us. It’s more than a gay romance novel, it’s a revelation. Turner has also done her research into occult matters. When Love reads the Tarot, all of her meanings are dead on target.

I was totally drawn in, so much so that I read it twice. I felt for Zaphkiel and Sean and was moved emotionally by their trials. Turner is also deft at drawing up captivating secondary characters.

There’s Lucifer, the devil himself, that is nothing like you imagined him. There’s Raziel, Zaphkiel’s partner and Love, Lucifer’s receptionist, who reads the Tarot cards with frightening accuracy. All of them are people you grow closer to as the book moves towards its incredible conclusion.

In short, this book enthralled me and had me going on a thrill ride with Zaphkiel. It’s a novel that shows the true power of M/M romance. It’s a genre that can transcend genres and Turner does this in style.

I can only hope that there’s a sequel!

Too much in too short a time.

I was looking for me a PRN but got me a PRH (pretty real headache). There are too many characters with very odd names all introduced in a short amount of time. Each with an agenda of their own or one they are trying to figure out. I was looking forward to a serious MM PRN to make my mind soar with delight, instead I got myself a headache trying to keep up.

Turner needed more space to branch out and develop more. Most of the characters are key players with a real role to make the story take flight, but too many at one time made things seem bunched together.

I recieved this book from Netgalley in exchange from an honest review.

While this book was ok, it was not very memorable, perhaps because it was fairly short. Too short to flesh out the characters properly, perhaps?

I started reading this book fully expecting it to be erotica, but there was really only one explicit scene, and a couple of kisses thrown in for good measure. I would have liked a little more. After all, these were two angels, reunited after centuries apart. I would have thought the passion burned a little brighter than it did. The angels themselves were also a little too human for my liking. True, the main characters were earthbound angels who had fully embraced a flesh form or forgotten about their origin alltogether, but I wish they had retained a little more of their angelic traits, other than being able to fly (Zaphkiel thought flying was too streinous) or teleport (beam me up, Scotty.)

To me, the most intriguing characters were actually Lucifer and Love. I enjoyed their relationship and backstory. So much so that I would actually have liked to read their story instead of Sean's and Zaphiel's.

Actual rating 2.5 stars.

Paranormal romance with an angelic realm.

Zaphkiel is an archangel who never meant to unleash the sun demon on Earth. He’s then enlisted by Lucifer to find the two pentacles the sun demon intends to use to destroy the universe, and at his side is his lover, Caliel, reunited with him after being reincarnated.

Caliel and Zaphkiel soon find themselves pawns between the leader of the throne angels, and Lucifer. Although there is far more intrigue afoot. Dark secrets abound, and the relationship between Caliel and Zaphkiel isn’t all it seems.

Sparks certainly fly between the two main characters, and during their mission, they must join forces. Theirs is a love which has crossed time, and never diminished even though death took one of them many years before.

For me this story takes the reader into another realm, where archangels, demons and the devil come out to play. So if you enjoy paranormal romance with characters who love a good fight and are prepared to embrace their sensuality, then this story is for you.

M/M relationship within.
