Debauched pop star Howie Howden has led a charmed life – there has been nothing a fat cheque, a non-disclosure agreement or a course of penicillin hasn’t made go away. But a calamitous night on the town, with his troubled yet dutiful manager Eddy Katz, has consequences for both men.
Does Howie's reputation as a 'ladies' man' conceal a darker truth? Will the tabloids continue to celebrate his out of control libido or is his luck finally running out? And what price will Eddy pay for his own ill-judged foray into the sleazy underbelly of the VIP lounge?
Glitterballs is a deadly serious funny book about sexual predation in the music business.
Fast-paced, funny and humane. There's a big heart beating beneath all the edgy fun and games in this extremely readable story of a debauched rock star whose career is fading fast, and his long-suffering manager whose life is unravelling even faster. The writer's satirically entertaining insights into the music scene are as clear-eyed as the hard truths she tells about the damage to the women in the lives of people like Howie, the rock star who's a monster of ego and selfishness, and Eddie, his decent but deluded manager whose eyes are opened dramatically to the grim reality behind the glitter.
I picked this up from a charity shop in Hebden Bridge and it sat on my shelves for ages, picking it up to read as I fancied a change from a series of books I couldn't get more than a few chapters in of. What a refreshing change it was, engaging from the first word til the last, funny with interesting, well rounded characters and a lovely turn of phrase. My one minor quibble is the Meredith character seemed to peter out a bit with a hint of a modern interesting conclusion that it didn't deliver for her, but other than that a thoroughly well written and enjoyable novel.
