For The Record: A Sapphic Age Gap, Ice Queen Romance

Rate this book
Aloof ice queen with secrets? Check. Legendary playgirl? Check. When it comes to love, all bets are off.

Recently widowed, the last thing Sawyer Lavoie wants is to be dragged out for a night of dancing. And she especially doesn’t want to be hit on by a twentysomething, cocky lesbian overachiever. Not because she’s mourning her late husband, but because Sawyer has zero interest in entertaining women her daughter’s age.

McCoy ‘Coy’ Miller can charm her way into almost any woman’s bed. As a certified playgirl, she’s convinced the chase is sweeter than the capture. When she first meets the smokey-eyed beauty and her foolproof pickup lines crash and burn, Sawyer quickly becomes Coy’s biggest chase yet.

When a flat tire brings them together again, Sawyer can’t decide if it’s luck or misfortune, but learns that McCoy’s mechanical skills are—reluctantly—exactly what she’s been looking for.

As they become closer, Coy's ready smile and kind eyes threaten to destroy every defense Sawyer has built. Can she thaw long enough to let McCoy in, or will they forever be at an impasse?

Coy and Sawyer’s story is the second in the contemporary, sizzling sapphic Love In Vancouver series. Each book can be read as a standalone, however, to get a full appreciation of the characters, reading in order is recommended. For The Record deals with tough subject matter and comes with a TW. If this concerns you, please check the list of trigger/content warnings on the author's website before continuing.

Mediocre read!
.... dull and discombobulating book #2 of 'Love In Vancouver' series --- plus i do not think that this couple (McCoy & Sawyer) had any chemistry -- just a forced romance..

2.5 stars!

This slow-burn, opposites-attract romance is truly fantastic. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend that you do so. I enjoyed the first book in this series, but this one is exceptional. Jen-Lea has surpassed herself. The development of the relationship between Sawyer and McCoy is incredibly captivating, and I couldn't put the book down. While I don't always prefer slow-burn romances, the tension and chemistry between Sawyer and McCoy were irresistible.

I truly enjoyed all of the supporting characters; I especially loved Greg, McCoy's father—he was such a sweetheart. Bree, Sawyer's daughter, was a beautiful character. It was wonderful to see all the characters from the first book return with their little interludes. Even the frustrating moments with Sloane, McCoy's sister, were well-written and added depth to the story.

This book was brilliant, and I highly recommend it! I look forward to more from Jen- Lea in the future.

I received For The Record as an ARC. Thanks again Jen!! ❤️❤️ The release date is Jan 21st 2025.

For the record was everything I was hoping it would be. Age gap, Ice queen? Yes,please! Sign me up! Oh and can’t forget to mention this is a sloooooowww burn but does not disappoint.

Coy is a player that’s used to getting anyone she wants and shoots her shot with Sawyer. That does not go well lol Sawyer was probably the iciest character I’ve ever read. She was downright mean asf buuutttt Coy needed to be knocked down a couple notches. They meet at a bar where sawyer turns Coy down but they keep crossing paths and their story begins.

Sayer is a workaholic chef that’s recently widowed. Her cheating husband passed away in a car accident. Poor Sawyer has so much baggage due to him and her childhood. Her story was so sad to read but told so well.

Coy is a mechanic and works with her father at their shop. She comes across as a player that’s always happy and carefree but there’s lots of layers to her character.

This is a slow burn but the story flowed well and kept me wanting to read more and more. Coy slowly starts to chip away at Sawyers walls and we get to see the raw Sawyer.

The banter between the two was my favorite. Coy was such a flirt and Sawyer was downright mean, I loved it lol Their relationship slowly builds as they get to really know each other at a deeper level. There’s no spice until about 70ish% of the book. I didn’t mind because the story was so good but once it did happen it was 🧨 🥵🌶️🌶️🌶️ There’s slight BDSM and lots of steamy parts. Besides that, the book was very emotional especially Sawyers story. This is book two of the series but can be read as a standalone. I do recommend reading book one which is “For the 1000th time” only so you are familiar with the side characters. Book one was just as amazing.

I loved this sequel by Jen-Lea Mercy.  Her angsty, slow frost, slow burn was a fun read.

The characters were very well done. The secondary characters added to the story and were a wonderful support system.

I appreciated that once the relationship got started, there was still some angst, but not the typical breakup and reconciliation.

I am excited for more books in the series and look forward to what comes up next.

For the Record is definitely one of my favourite books for 2024. I was hooked from the first page and loved the depth of character development throughout the book.

On one hand we have Sawyer Lavoie, a workaholic chef and restauranteur who has recently been widowed following the death of her abusive, cheating husband in a car crash. She is tired of living a life where she had no control and was expected to confirm with her family’s expectations. As a result she has erected defences to prevent anyone getting in and focuses solely on her work….to the detriment of her health.

On the other hand we have McCoy ‘Coy’ Miller who has the well-earned reputation for being a playgirl who can charm her way into almost any woman’s bed. When she first meets Sawyer at a bar she is instantly attracted and determined to woo the aloof ice queen, even if it means giving up her playboy ways and letting go of her part-time dom/sub relationship with the owner of the bar.

However, Sawyer has absolutely no interest in getting involved with a woman who is a similar age to her daughter and immediately rebuff’s Coy’s cocky advances. Yet the two women continually find their paths crossing. In the process, Sawyer begins to realise that McCoy’s mechanical skills are just what she needs, even if she has to put up walls that are sky high to short circuit Coy’s attempts to break down those walls and convince Sawyer to let her in.

Following their journey as Coy gradually chips away at Sawyer’s walls, we begin to see the other side of Coy that can finally see herself letting go of her playgirl ways and settling down with just the one woman, as well as her dedication to her family, in particular her grandmother.

However, she needs to convince not just Sawyer, but also her twin sister and friends that she can be trusted to change her ways. However, Sawyer also needs to learn to slow down, let go of some of her barriers and to let others see the real Sawyer. The question is whether Coy’s attempts at seduction can draw Sawyer in or end up pushing her further away.

For the Record is an incredible journey of letting go of past trauma and finding the strength to allow others to help you find your true self. Definitely a 5-star read for me that will go in my regular re-read rotation.

I am grateful to Jen-Lea Mercy for providing me with an advanced copy of this book. I am leaving this review voluntarily and all opinions are my own.

I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this book and I am happy to say it was one of the best books I have read this year. I was unfamiliar with this author going in but after reading this I am excited to read her first book as I love the way she develops her characters and the relationships between them. As a huge fan of the ice queen trope the writer does an amazing job developing Sawyer’s character from an icy hard working repressed widow to the woman she was always meant to be. The story was heartbreaking at times and extremely endearing as were the characters. Definitely a must read for fans of romance.

This Ice Queen/Playgirl love story had me firmly in its grip from the moment I started reading.
Of course I knew McCoy from the first book "For the 1000th time".
It was clear that this playgirl would learn a lesson in love, but I actually didn't expect Sawyer in this form.
Wow, what an ice queen and like every Ice Queen she unfortunately has a lot of reason to be like that.
Unfortunately Coy has to suffer and endure a lot to win her over. It's a slow-burn, almost torturously slow age-gap love story.
But everything has a reason and is completely understandable.

Sawyer has everything under control.
That's how it seems and she tries to make it look on the outside. Inside, everything is different and she is hanging by a thread.
Her heart, her nerves and her health are practically screaming at her.
Stubborn as she is, she doesn't want to listen to it under any circumstances.
She certainly doesn't want to admit that the company of this playgirl McCoy fascinates and attracts her.
She's a woman! And one who seems to enjoy a lot of women and no matter how charming, sweet and nice, almost loving she is to her, Sawyer will never let her get close to him!
But as the saying goes: Never say never and never judge a person too quickly.

This story is very intense and deals with difficult topics and a dark past.
McCoy is a light in this, who also has to fight with the shadows herself.
It gets very hot and although we have to wait for it, it's so worth it!

I'm so excited to see if there will be a story for Sloane! God, that would be really exciting. What happiness awaits her and with whom maybe...I certainly hope so, because this group of friends and family is addictive. However, I've just read that Frankie is getting her own story and I hope we don't have to wait that long 😫 I've always liked her even if she's a bit mysterious. She was always good to and for McCoy!
She deserves something good!
Thanks so much to Jen Lea Mercy for the Arc! I love this series!

“For The Record” is a truly enjoyable read, I couldn’t put it back and was surprised when I realized I’ve already finished it.

✤ slow-burn
✤ opposites attract
✤ ice queen/playgirl
✤ age gap
✤ overcoming trauma
✤ femme domme/butch sub
✤ spice: 4/5 ★

Sawyer, a widow from a loveless and abusive marriage, has built strong walls around herself. Watching Coy patiently and persistently help her take them down brick by stubborn brick was one of the most rewarding parts of the book. Sawyer’s mood swings deeper into the book did irritate me for a moment, but by that point I already liked her character enough to keep going. The story had also given me enough hints that there was more beneath her behaviour, so I wanted to give her a chance and wasn’t disappointed.

McCoy herself is a sweet and understanding person, though she’s earned a reputation among those closest to her as a playgirl who doesn’t care about love or relationships. In reality, she’s been scared of getting hurt after giving her heart away. Deep down, she knows her player days don’t fit her life anymore, and even being seen that way starts to bother her. On some level she’s craving stability and connection, and the moment she meets Sawyer, those desires are even stronger. From then on, every chance Coy gets, she shoots her shot.

The book beautifully portrayed fears, trauma, and the messy aftermath of both, but it also balanced that heaviness of deep emotions with humor. More than once I caught myself having to suppress a chuckle. The chemistry between Sawyer and Coy, both in and out of bed, was fantastic and filled with real emotions and tenderness.

Overall, this is a well-written, emotionally deep and fun story to read. I loved its depth, the way it handled difficulties, and the warmth of the connection. Definitely high recommendation.

Breaking Through Barriers and Wearing Down Defenses

McCoy/Coy is a confident playgirl who's never failed to get a femme into her bed until Sawyer, an ice queen with a complicated traumatic past.

As the MCs unexpectedly bump into one another and interact, we begin to see a puzzling side to Coy; when in Sawyer's presence, she becomes unsure, even anxious, stumbling over herself, but in her nervousness, she spits out flirty lines, which annoy Sawyer and exacerbate the tension between them.

Sawyer, on the other hand, though she goes out of her way to be cruel and demanding while ridiculing and judging McCoy, is at the same time intrigued by her but keeps a constant vigil over her walls to keep herself and her heart impenetrable.

Through dueling dialogue, they spar while McCoy bends over backwards to be there for Sawyer in any way that becomes available to her.

The author has excelled masterfully in painting these ladies into realistic, challenging circumstances while peeling back the layers of each character, giving us peeks into their pasts and their coping mechanisms and fears. Jen-Lea has also used situations and secondary characters to exquisite perfection to throw wrenches into the dynamics, spur on hope, and help drive the story, including scenes with Frankie that brought much-needed understanding and clarity.

It may have taken time to break through the barriers and wear down defenses, causing doubt and even more conflict, but eventually the hearts and lives of our weary MCs crack open to one another.

For The Record is well-written, thoroughly captivating, and will keep you enthralled through to the very last page.

Thanks for the ARC of For The Record, Jen-Lea Mercy!

What a read!
For the record is a page turning lesbian romance featuring an older femme and soft butch. The author knew what she was doing creating them. I tend to shy away from soft butch characters but McCoy— Coy, as the author chooses to call her had me swooning. She's such a sweet 27 year old hopeless romantic with a playgirl reputation — untill she meets Sawyer who captivated her heart and puts her in hot persuit mode, making for a fun read. Irrespective of the challenges most age gap relationships face.

Sawyer- Sassy Sawyer, as McCoy saves her phone number is one of those women who endured the blues a homophobic upbringing, the patriarchy and abuse, at the hands of her now later husband. She is however one strong independent woman owning and running a successful restaurant business. And a femme who craves a love she doesn't even know she craves— until she meets McCoy. Her icy nature deems her unimpressed. Its McCoy's love and persistence that finally melt the ice to eventually give their relationship a chance.

I fell in love with the MCs. They are complex, imperfectly imperfect but also relatable. The author skillful navigates issues hindering their love. I was rooting so hard for them from page one.
The secondary characters also gave the story interesting layers to that kept me keep turning page after page. 🙃 I definitely need more of this— ordering For the Price to meet more of Frankie— one of the intriguing secondary characters I have found here.

Slow burn, femme/soft butch lesbian romance with light BDSM play, Age gap, ice queen. If these themes appeal to you.. you will love this book.
% 100 recommend.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book as it swiftly took me from casual enjoyment to outright obsession! The way in which this slow burn delivers; with all the intimacy, emotion, connection, yearning, and absolutely breathtaking spice was delectable.

McCoy has a reputation for being a ‘play girl’, keeping her connections casual, no strings and occasionally more than two, she’s been living it up. Sawyer meets her at a bar and with one withered glance, one fumbled conversation, all of McCoy’s bravado flies out the window. McCoy turns tail, memory burning but doesn’t expect to see the object of her desire again. Until another chance encounter throws them into each other’s orbit.

What follows throughout this book, is a gradual journey of self discovery, self acceptance and self awareness. The chemistry between these two is utterly off the charts. I adored both of them but I will always lean towards Sawyer as a favourite. Deliciously flawed in many aspects, both McCoy and Sawyer learn and grow individually and together.

The addition of Bree as Sawyers daughter was delightful and I loved their conversations that slipped into French; it was written so naturally and added an extra layer to their relationship.

And the spice, a slow burn but a very very very (did I say very?!) good pay off! Loved it. With Sawyer not as experienced as McCoy, I loved seeing the growth in their connection and her self confidence. Beautifully explored.

Book two in Jen Lea’s Vancouver series packs a punch. It’s also on KU, so definitely worth checking out.

Ice Queen meets Playgirl! We meet Sawyer and Mccoy at a birthday party at the bar.

Both characters are intriguing and dynamic. Sawyer, a chef with an attitude and McCoy who has never failed to get a woman in her bed, is the dynamic for a great book, which this is.

Sawyer has a background, from childhood up to adult that is enough to make anyone an Ice Queen! McCoy puts up a good front, but she has insecurities that drive her to be a "Playgirl."
Add Sloane, McCoy's twin and a bar owner, Frankie to this mix and you have a book that keeps you turning pages long into the night!

I refuse to give spoilers as they will ruin your enjoyment of reading the book. I will tell you that the push and pull between Sawyer and McCoy will sometimes frustrate you. Sloane and her antics will frustrate you and will make you want to reach out and slap her!

I can honestly say you will not regret picking up this book, unless your regret is from lack of sleep from turning pages well into the night. It is a slow burn that will frustrate you in every way.

Honestly, best ever slow burn romance I’ve EVER read!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
God I couldn’t put this book down at times!! It was so so good. There was a point too that made me cry and had my heart breaking for both characters in totally different ways.
Sawyer is truly the queen of Ice Queens! And McCoy is the most Golden Retriever queer you’ll ever meet 😂
I enjoyed book one a lot, which made me give book two a go, and this one hit it out of the park! Highly recommend reading this series. Book three is coming soon. They’re interconnected standalones and follow the same friend group but different couples each book.
This book does cover some difficult subjects, such as religious trauma, conversion therapy (talks of, not on page), verbally abusive partner (past/not on page). But I truly thought all this was handled very well and was really interesting to read and see how the characters dealt with these issues, alone and together.

Written in Third person with 2x POV’s. Age Gap (16), Single Parent, Masc/Femme, Ice Queen, Grumpy x Sunshine, Golden Retriever/Black Cat, Opposites Attract, Overcoming Trauma, Slow Burn. 4x Spicy Scenes (ish, there is some fantasies 😈).

I was provided For the Record as an ARC reader for an honest review.

For the Record is an age gap romance featuring a soft butch submissive, femme domme dynamic. I haven’t read many romances with a butch submissive and it was a nice change of pace.

An angsty and dramatic read, it still has lighthearted and comforting moments where the main characters bond and connect through hardships and overcoming trauma, primarily on the older femme’s side.

It tackles social expectation, religious trauma, the after effects of conversion “therapy”, physical trauma, and healing from domestic violence.

It gets particularly smutty in the second half, and the usual cheesy romantic moments (that’s what you’re here for) with some fun exploration into how the expectations and perceptions of others can harm you over time.

Pick this up if you want drama between a grumpy type A black cat older femme and the sunny golden retriever younger butch who can’t help but to clumsily try to win her heart.

A Heartfelt Age-Gap Romance

For the record is a beautifully written age-gap romance that explores love, grief, and second chances. Sawyer Lavoie, recently widowed and reluctant to re-enter the dating world, finds herself unwillingly intrigued by McCoy "Coy" Miller, a confident, younger woman with a talent for both flirting and fixing cars. What starts as an unwanted encounter turns into something deeper when fate (and a flat tire) bring them together again.

The novel balances emotional depth with playful banter, showcasing Sawyer’s inner struggle to open her heart and Coy’s determination to prove that love doesn’t come with an age limit. With strong character development, sizzling chemistry, and tender moments, For the Record is a slow-burn romance that will have readers rooting for this unlikely pair.

Perfect for fans of age-gap romance, witty dialogue, and heartfelt journeys of healing and self-discovery.

I was not familiar with this author and this is the first book I have read by this author. The story of McCoy and Sawyer. Swayer, who is older and has a daughter, is a well-known chef. She has had a traumatic life. A man who abused her and also children she lost during her pregnancy. All this has shaped her into a woman who trusts no one and she does not give her heart easily. Then she meets the younger McCoy, who lives a different kind of lifestyle. These two women get to know each other and it is not exactly a bed and breakfast story. But it is an entertaining story of how someone finds the woman of her dreams by being persistent, opening up and just going for it. This story is really emotional, heartbreaking, but also offers hope and it is really beautiful to see all those crackers come to life. I can say that I really enjoyed this story. Highly recommended.

Sawyer Lavoie, a local restaurant owner, has a encounter at a LGBTQIA event with McCoy, whom she brushes off. Despite that, she can't get her out of her mind.

Coy is NOT used to being shot down, especially by a gorgeous femme. So after a chance encounter later, when the opportunity to work on a car for ger arrives, Coy takes it.

Complicating things are the echoes of Sawyer's husband's death and Coy's relationship with her domme... both women, frankly have ISSUES.

Really intense, well written book. If you are a fan of Lee Winter, Roslyn Sinclair or the MirAndy ship in Devil Wears Prada, this would be a book for you. While this ties into the author's other books, it reads well as a stand alone.

This. Book.

Sawyer = genuine ice queen for a d*mn good reason and her only soft spot is for her daughter (deservedly so) [[*sidenote- dear goddess what I'd give for book 3 to be Bree with ]]
anyways
McCoy = every damn tomboy I met at the bar in my 20s. like the epitome of playgirl but NOT f*ckboi which is rare. such a good soul and truly a chameleon for the benefit of those around her (iykyk)

The chemistry just hit the bullseye. The slowburn?! dear lordt Ms Mercy you somehow how had my full attention with f*ckin KINDLING. One little glow of a spark appeared and then a breeze blew it out.. but the spark never gave up and hot d*mn the flames when it caught.

Seriously this book blew my expectations away and it earned every single star so flawlessly. Well Done Ms Mercy.

I have just finished ARC: FOR THE RECORD by Jen-Lea Mercy Author. I LOVE this book. This book more than satisfies starting off the New Year with an excellent and relaxing Read..Ms. Mercy has a talent for pulling out your emotions for excitement and euphoria to the darkest part of the human soul She takes the reader into the a world we don’t often experience. She has an unusual talent for making the characters 3 dimensional. I like how she bring in the characters from other books to fit into the MC lives. She is a new author for me. I would highly recommend this author, book, and any other publications.

This was a great read. Ice-Queen Sawyer is a recently widowed chef/restaurant owner, but as her husband cheated on her, she is not too upset. She gets talked in to going to a bar where she gets chatted up by McCoy (Coy). She rejects Coy out of hand, but then she meets her again when she needs help with her car. This is the slow melting of the Ice Queen, with the eager younger women. Really good banter between the women and good secondary characters a lovely read.

Once you get to know the characters, their dynamic makes sense. Sawyer’s personal history and the horrors of the childhood and marital oppression she’d endured, make it understandable that she would distrust everyone and only slowly allow Coy into her life, albeit incrementally. Two steps forward, one back.
I loved the complexity of Coy’s character, her insecurities and her loyalty to family and friends.
I loved the story and the pace of their relationship - Sawyer’s pace. It is well-written and hooked me in right at the start, keeping me engaged all the way to the end. (I did get told off by my partner for reading this over Christmas, so it took me longer than I wanted to as I had to sneak read.)

Rebirth

What an inspiring story of the healing power of love. McCoy and Sawyer have a chance meeting at and event and develop a relationship after Sawyer hires McCoy for a job. Their budding relationship helps each other discovery hidden depths and let go of past expectations that kept the both from accepting love. I would recommend this book to everyone and can't wait to what comes next in the series.

I so enjoy a hot loud kitchen and bedroom!

Jen-Lea Mercy has a winner here with this delightful mix of characters! The story holds interest from start to finish and the sex scenes are hot but not over the top. The tension between the siblings and the main characters is perfectly balanced like a good recipe! The taste left in my mouth left me wanting more when the last period was met. Well done MS Mercy!

Wonderful and passionate

I came to read this book with zero expectations - just saw that it was an ice queen/age gap story and was ready to dive in. What a wonderful read it turned out to be with complex, fleshed out characters and a rich story full of passion, warmth, and the perfect amount of heat. I flew through this book in a day and am now going to go back and read the first book in the series!

Quite an enjoyable read. The two MCs are great and have an interesting dynamic. I’m liking the way this series is rolling out, with these two characters being my favs so far. The writing flows well keeping the pages turning, and the setting makes me want to check out B.C. Voluntary review of an ARC.

Jen-Lea Mercy never fails to bring excellent characters with deep emotions and beautiful romance. Sawyer is my kind of ice queen...icy as hell to start and the sweetest with Coy when she falls. And Coy's persistence is to be commended!
There's a lot of heartbreak in this book and hard topics so check the triggers on the authors website. But it is so worth the read!

What a delight

I love the story of Sawyer and Mccoy!! In addition to the age gap the individual stories of coming out of a tumultuous marriage and finding a second chance at love. Being the supposed play girl of the friend group when really you just haven’t found the right one. The friendship and family dynamics also brought so much to the story. Can’t wait for the next book!!

If you're in the mood for an age gap with an epic ice queen, this is the book to read. I waited patiently for Coy's story, I love the depth that the character gets throughout the book and the more we learn about her the more clear it becomes that she's been labeled unfairly by her friend group.
