Willie grew up outside of Damascus, Virginia, and life was never easy for her. She’s a hard-as-nails single mom who struggles to make ends meet with little support and few opportunities. She’s also the community “rescue mom”, taking in young people with no other place to go. All this while dodging an ex-boyfriend turned stalker who also happens to be a cop.
Willie only made it to adulthood by being resilient. That toughness, combined with a series of odd jobs and side hustles, helps keep her unorthodox family afloat. All those qualities will be tested when a terror attack leaves the nation in an indefinite blackout, and life suddenly becomes even harder. On top of it, the conflict between Willie and her ex-boyfriend is escalating and this time neither of them is willing to back down.
Franklin Horton lives and writes in the mountains of southwestern Virginia. He attended Virginia Intermont College and Virginia Commonwealth University. In his spare time he pursues outdoor adventures with his wife and two children. His interests include camping, kayaking, backpacking, mountain biking, and shooting.
WHAT A GREAT FIRST BOOK IN WHAT'S ONLY GOING TO BECOME ANOTHER GREAT SERIES BY FRANKLIN HORTON
If this is your first book you read written by Franklin Horton, you will be hooked and quickly become a fan of his finding yourself reading all his works.
Willie: Book One in the Defeated Creek Series Book 1 of 1: The Defeated Creek Series is a well written book about a gal living in central Appalachia Mountains in Virginia. Our hero is Willie, a signal mother of a teenager daughter, raised in a abusive family with parents more interested in drugs, alcohol, and doing the least possible to make it through the current day to the next. With the hardships Willie endured during childhood, most would have continued down the same path as she was raised. Instead, Willie and her daughter take in young teens to escape the same torment and abuse Willie was, and her brothers were raised in.
Our hero, Willie, is hardworking, has strong morals, and loving to the children she takes in. That being said, Willie is one woman that you would not want to piss her off. She has no problem standing up for those who can not protect themselves, and God help those who harm the people who she cares about.
After a terrorist attack that takes down the U.S. infrastructure, Willie takes it upon herself to aid who she can, sometimes in a way that would make some military personnel afraid themselves. All at the same time, she's the one you want on your side.
I really enjoyed this first book and can't wait until the next addition comes out. I hope you will too.
Quotes: "Fear don't alter the future."
"Having a full belly was insignificant when compared to having a full heart."
"Some species evolve to survive a broader range of conditions. We've evolved into a species that can only keep itself alive under a very narrow set of conditions. I ain't a biologist, but it seems like that would logically point toward extinction at some point."
To be frank (pun intended), this is not the style of writing/storytelling I’m used to with Franklin Horton. Not only because it’s from a female perspective, but because it’s slower paced and has more internal monologue and extended character reflection. On top of that, it was less tied to the Locker Nine series than I was expecting; with only a very minimal elbow nudge. As a long-time fan of Franklin Horton’s books, I can honestly say I was not disappointed. While different, I connected with the story and characters. As a middle-aged man, I still found an order of connection with the main character. I thought the author did a good job getting into the head of Willie, who reminded me a bit of my older sister. We both grew up poor (considered “white trash”) and in a troubled family situation, so I sympathized with Willie. I saw some of me in her as well as some of my sister. As I said, I was not disappointed that this book varied from his usual style, but in a way, I found it refreshing and I look forward to reading the next in the series. (Granted, I do hope it ties in more with Locker Nine next time).
Willie is such an engaging character. A woman who gets things done. Even though she is an undiagnosed borderline personality, the apocalyptic lifestyle makes her "normal". I am looking forward to book two of this series.
A unique and compelling addition to the 'Borrowed World' universe
Willie: Book 1 in the Defeated Creek series, which takes place in the same universe as Borrowed World, Locker 9 and The Mad Mick. It features a remarkable heroine, Willie, who takes in kids in need of a safe place, no questions asked. It also features a truly detestable antagonist in Garvey, A crooked, drug addicted, drug dealing cop with an attitude problem. Finally, it introduces Robert Hardwick of the Locker 9 series. The writing is every bit as well executed as one should expect from Horton. This isn't the most action packed book in this universe, but don't think that makes it any less compelling. 5/5 stars. If you enjoy survival fiction with a big helping of pathos, you will love Willie. I really hope her story continues and I'm hoping that the fact its titled Book 1 implies more books in the series are coming at some point!
I found Horton’s introduction of “Willie” as a new character to the Borrowed World universe enjoyable. Her background of a life of overcoming difficulties and hardship offers her character depth and relatability. I continue to appreciate Mr. Horton’s subtle weaving the various characters in Borrowed World into each others lives. The return to a focus on a small group of people in a specific area was also a welcome change. I have ready all the books in the Borrowed World and a few more than once. Thank you Mr. Horton adding this new and believable character to the series. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
Nothing irks me more when reading this genre than the protagonist being so emotionally bothered by doubt, so slow to become cautious, so foolish as to fail to assume the dangers are real. I suppose it’s because they don’t know any other way to set up suspense. Bah humbug.
This author, however, has none of those problems—well, almost none. But at least the hero isn’t afraid to act and act decisively. There is way too much psycho syrup trying to tell us why people are acting as they do. Phssshhhh. That isn’t character development, it’s boring. Still, the book is a cut above much of the writing in this genre and worth the read.
Having been to Damascus, VA twice in the past couple of years I was familiar with the area in the story. And, the way Franklin talked about the people in this story had such a ring of truth to it that I could feel the reality of it all. Having read The Mad Mick series I was familiar with Franklin’s style but having Willie be the main character was a clincher for me! I totally enjoyed becoming part of the “family” and partaking in the ups and downs of living in the apocalypse. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
This series is just a little different than Franklin Hortons other series (If you haven’t read them yet, do yourself a favor and look them up). Willie, the main character, isn’t a prepper but she is a survivor. She grew up hard but instead of defeating her it made her stronger. I’m not going into the plot details, Mr Horton tells Willie’s story better than I can but I can honestly say that I’m waiting with eager anticipation for the next installment in the story of Willie and her found family as they navigate a man made apocalypse.
Good to have Franklin back after the devastating hurricane. Once again he's created another great read. Willie is a departure from his normal work but it has heart. Anyone who's lived in these situations or has been involved with some of these sad issues can feel the pain the pills have caused. A mention made about the "Locker Nine" is yet another great series. Looking forward to all of Franklin's upcoming releases.
I enjoyed the characters and a very different scenario from other post apocalyptic genre. My paternal family initially moved to Estill County Kentucky from Washington County Virginia. I can relate to some of the experiences and toughness of the Appalachian people from stories from family members. A very good and entertaining read. I am looking forward to the next book in the Defeated Creek Series. Nancy S.
I've read and enjoyed every Franklin Horton book, and Willie stands out as his most engaging character. That's saying a lot, especially if you're hooked on The Mad Mick like I am. As caring as she is she's also hard as nails and does whatever it takes to survive. She reminds me of a few strong women I know who are also true survivors. Plenty of action, well plotted, and it's part of that same world as Mick, Borrowed World, and the others we all love.
Not repeating the blurb because you can read it yourself. I admired this kick-ass woman name Willie. Hearing the things she has gone through growing up does a great job of helping you understand how she became the woman she did -- someone still managing to care for the ones who need it. Can't wait for Book #2. To be fair, I had no idea this was part of a greater series called the Borrowed World, so I am going to check that out as well. Nice way to end 2024.
As usual, Franklin creates a great action filled book. Willie definitely has the gumption of a woman raised in Appalachia. She don't take crap from anyone. The plot line leaves you wanting more! The characters of this book are taking shape into the kind of folks you would want around when times get tough. Looking forward to the next one in the series!
I like all the spin off series. I have no clue which was first, this one, Locker Nine or The Mad Mick. I don't even yet know if there are more. I like that you don't need to read them in order. I suspect I'm not. Totally different stories with the same SHTF situation that slightly mention other characters. My favorite so far is the Mad Mick. Funny and action packed.
This book was unlike so many in the 'when shtf' category. I enjoyed all of the characters and got to know them pretty well without the author going on and on. Loved the strong female lead. She looked after the kids but could kick any man's butt that messed with them. Hope another book in the series is being written!
I liked the idea of this one. She seems sooo tough! She has a great thought process and is a good MC. We are getting a nice assortment of characters. I do think “ What is wrong with Garbey?” But still a good character in this dystopian story. I look forward to more in this series. Narration is nicely done.
If this is what you intended to read, you’ll give it five stars. Set in his same world as his other books, this one has an entirely new and unexpected cast of characters, as well as a touch of one familiar. Before you know it, you’re drawn in and care about them, even one you shouldn’t.
Franklin Horton has once again produced a great book. I couldn't put it down. Willie is a colorful engaging character. I'm looking forward to this new series and can't recommend this book enough.
You did it Franklin, I just wish it kept going 😊 Tell pops and nana hi for me, I’m still trying to get by and visit them. Hurry up with your next book, I’m anxious 😬 Tom
Willie is an independent mountain woman who is not only the sole support for her teenage daughter but provides a refuge for other teens. As society crumbles she survives a crooked cop and other problems.
Another great read, and big time reminder of what could be.
Great characters, lots of reality checks in this story. I like Willie and her crew. I learned a lot about the Appalachian country, some good and lots of bad and sad. 👍👍👍
This is another great new Franklin Horton series. I haven’t had a book I couldn’t put down since Mad Max. Can’t wait for the next in this great new series.
Franklin Horton delivers. His character development is fantastic. You feels as if you are sitting there sweating it out with everyone. Wife is almost done with the book as well!
A very interesting story of how poor and desperate people are forced to do many things that they wouldn’t normally do under normal circumstances just to survive. A story full of interesting situations that make for very enjoyable reading.
This book was really good and fast paced! I love that Willie was a strong character and didn’t take any $hit for anyone. Reading this book has made me was to go reread the Locker Nine series.
This was really good. This is my first Franklin Horton book and I really liked it. He got into Willie’s mind well, and explained her thoughts and why she is the way she is. I’ll be looking for more of his books.
Franklin Horton never fails to deliver. Can’t wait for the second book in Willie’s story comes out so we can see how she and her hodgepodge family fair during this difficult time in the country.
Really good book, kept me interested the whole time. Can’t wait to read the next one. It was a very refreshingly original story that had a lot and story line like nothing I’ve read before. The characters are easy to love and their life portrayed very interesting.
OMG, what a great book! I can see why so many people love his works. Love that the main character is a strong woman with a strong sense of right and wrong; some may not agree with her choices, but she never wavers. Can't wait for the next book in the series!
What a great main character and the story of her life and the people she holds close in her life. I'm very glad I started reading Franklin Horton a very talented writer. Enjoy!
