The author might have been striving for a strong female lead, but the FMC is just a bully. She is both physically and verbally abusive to all of the MMCs, her teammates, and pretty much everyone she interacts with. The author conflates strength with rudeness, belligerence, and being as obnoxious as possible.
The FMC justifies her poor attitude on her sad backstory.
The characters spend probably 80% of the book ‘smirking’, and the rest ‘snorting’, ‘grumbling’, and rolling their eyes.
The MMCs are very two-dimensional. They spend almost the entire book sappily trailing behind her, professing how much they adore and want her. They are frequently "sheepish", "blushing", “submissive”, and "pouting". They spend very little time doing anything but fawning over her. One is supposed to be the captain of a pro hockey team, but spends almost no time doing anything hockey related.
Swearing has never bothered me in books or life, and I truly feel that it can be useful in a story, but this was exhausting to slog through. I would guess that at least half of the lines of dialogue included profanity, and not in a clever way. It was noticeably absent when the parents and other elders spoke.
The conversations were immature and repetitive. A large amount of the dialogue revolved around the FMC posturing and threatening to hurt someone, and the males responding, "that's so hot!" while they adjust themselves.
Typical lines: “Rogue rolls her eyes as she looks at him. “(Bleep)ing duh, bro.” “She’s not wrong, but she’s baiting the bear. “Princess, this is serious.” “Duh, Ang. I’m not stupid,” she huffs as she flops onto the lounging couch.”
There's not much story. Most of the book is the MMCs arguing over her safety, and the FMC saying she’s tough enough to take care of herself. The rest is mostly reiterating the same exposition and internal monologues over and over and over, with little added or resolved.
The story just...stops. No real cliffhanger, no finale. They spend most of the book getting ready for the big party, then the book stops just as they arrive. I spent the whole book waiting for action to happen, but it never did.
The villains were cringey, in a pathetic and basic way.
The author uses dozens of pop culture references, and the FMC mocks a character that doesn't understand one.
The author's note haughtily claims that she had many proofreaders, and that any grammatical mistakes were likely intentional. However, there were many instances where the words were out of order, misused, or switched with something similar ('streak' instead of 'steak', ‘lout’ instead of ‘out’, ‘she’s’ instead of ‘she’, 'overtime' instead of 'over time', 'is' when it was obviously supposed to be 'isn't', etc).
There are also times where the location changes midscene without telling the reader.
I played derby for years. It was probably fortunate that there was very little of it in the book. The few, short scenes involving her teammates or skating only highlighted how much of a bully she was. Even the coach and MMC told her she was using excessive force and likely to injure her teammates. Another time she threatened them and made them all cower before her for daring to say her friends were hot.
I have read over a thousand romance novels, and this is probably the worst. It's definitely the most obnoxious, hateful FMC.
Cassandra Featherstone and her ever-expanding universe. The Faetal Attraction series is joining this amazing, complex universe, and it starts with Hell on Wheels.
I'm a huge fan of Cass, and I make grabby hands at anything she puts out. All of Cass's books are amazing, but I have to say HoW has to be the funnest book that Cass has written. Raves, illegal street racing, glamorous balls, drunken games, etc., it was fantastic. On the flip side of that, there were also bar fights, mob meetings, gangs, twatwaffles, and loads more. Roller derby has never been more dangerous. And it was all done with Cass's flare and trademark humor. I've never been happier that Cass's and my humor line up so well, I laughed my way through this book. Then there was the meeting with the spider shifter, which freaked me out at first, however, by the end, it was one of my favorite scenes.
The characters were great. They're young (early 20s) but have been friends for most of their lives, and things are finally getting romantic. MFC, Rogue is every bit the rebel her name suggests. She took some time to get used to, but I like her. She's headstrong, bratty, and confident, and a real ballbuster. Rogue has a great harem with demon twins, a sweet phoenix, and a cuddly lion named Archie, who is my favorite. The angst between her and her stepbrother Rebel was strong, everyone, including me, wanted to shake the pair. They provided loads of entertainment and drama.
Hell on Wheels was glorious! Another awesome read by Cassandra Featherstone that connects with some of her other series. I really enjoyed all the easter eggs Cass left. The story ended on a question, not a cliffhanger, so that wasn't too bad, but I'm already dying to see what happens next.
As much as I find their differing species intriguing, it’s oddly hard to follow the storyline and connect with any of the characters. Oddly because there’s literally a character glossary at the beginning of the book breaking everything down so there’s no confusion on who is what.
This book was such a juicy combination of tropes! Rogue got an entire ‘trope bouquet’, and she doesn’t even have to choose. We got a bit of brother’s best friends, some friends to lovers, an adopted brother trope, and lots of lovely poly vibes that slowly develop. Add a touch of ‘not so vanilla spice’ and some fun games of truth or dare, and you end up with this author’s fasted burn to date!
But the spice definitely isn’t everything. Our fmc is a powerful hybrid, and I’m pretty sure we haven’t even seen half of what she’s able to do. With people having it out for her and her newfound mates, we get a suspenseful storyline, and I loved diving further into this urban fantasy world. It’s fascinating how so many books and storylines are connected with each other, and I’m excited to find more connections in the future.
I have a hard time picking a favorite guy out of Rogue’s harem, but somehow I suspect Javier could become a favorite in the future. At the moment though, I quite like Damon’s personality and how he switches between D and s vibes. I’m excited to see him instruct some of the other guys in the future on all the different ways they can love each other…
I enjoyed the multiple point of views, it gave me some much needed insight into everyone. There’s a lot of characters and pretty much seperate species except for the twins. Damon and Angelo, are the Gemini twin demons. The sons of the current top mob ruler, Luca and Lola. Javier is a phoenix, and the son of the current rulers of the avians. Archer aka Archie, a Lion, who is also the son of the Pride leaders. Rebel is another unseelie fae, a Guardian just like Rogue, who is the female lead character, she’s part unseelie and part succubi. The book starts off with Rogue being pissed off at an ex gf, her ex best friend, co captain of the derby team. For good reason, Mina the ex gf/ex bestie, joined another derby team full of mean girls. Associated with a part of the mob, Rogue gets beaten up. Almost died, thankfully she was able to her use her mental connection and reach out to Rebel. The guys found her in time but the bwitches ran before they could be identified. They were able to save Rogue in time. What peeved me off about Rogue, she kept demanding the guys let her take care of herself, that she’s been able to stay alive this long so she doesn’t need any help. Yet she almost died at the beginning of the book. She willingly over looked all the many many red flags with her ex bestie and still demands they treat her like she doesn’t need the support. It got annoying with her trying to defend she can do it all herself and doesn’t need babying. The guys weren’t trying to over take her life and bubble wrap her, they just wanted her to take someone with her when she needed to do things without them all. A buddy system. There was another huge fight with her ex bestie and her crew mid story and again brought about the guys protective instincts which had her defensiveness up being more of a brat than normal. After her going out immediately after almost dying, she drinks with the guys, and somehow Rogue and Damon are going at it. Rogue wakes up alone and feels abandoned so has what amounts to as a hissy fit, she never talks about her feelings so she basically punishes everyone until one of them puts the clues together. Then she seals the bond with the twins, then Archie then Javier. They are all pretty fast one after another, without it feeling like a gangbang but the 4 of them were all mated within a few chapters. Everyone is afraid to tell Rebel, her foster brother, as it’s alluded to many times how they both have feelings for each other but are oblivious to it. Rogue gets a mysterious box with a dress inviting her and her mates to this big party, so off they go to the Royal seamstress, Giuseppe aka Gui is also in another one of the spin offs in this world setting. He’s a brown recluse spider, imagine 8 legs and a human torso, as tall as your head. He’s older than dirt and also a genius when it comes to clothing design. They end up getting Gui to make them a outfit to tell the twins parents they mated, and matching tuxes to match the dress Rogue received with an inviting to the big meeting, an Appaclian or something, all mob heads, leaders of all the clan, the devil etc, so it’s a big party. There was little fan fare with the twins announcing their mating, it pissed off Lola the mom enough for her to send over eligible woman in spite for the twins. Luca the dad isn’t happy with how the twins announced it at their party without his and Lola’s presence. He confronts them in a private magical bubble, and this is where bratty Rogue speaks up. She basically tells him to get over it and how she wasn’t scared of him. It amuses Luca and he “allows” their mating due to her having a back bone, but then demands she complete the Caliphate trials to be inducted into their Caliphate with her mates. They all leave and there’s really not much else happening until the end where they all get dressed up to go to this big wig meeting Appachlian thingy, and off they go. They have to use their magical skills to find the hidden portal to the meeting and that’s it. I think if Rogue was written more as the character that could see the bigger picture when they guys worried about her I would have rated it as 5 stars. Running off to a huge underground rave after almost dying and then picking the biggest fight ever with the guys because they wanted her to be careful and to take one of them, just kinda cemented that I wouldn’t ever love her character. It was to obvious as the reader that the guys weren’t trying to hamper her. They wanted to support her in any way they could but she could only see them saying that she wasn’t good enough to protect herself. I did like how most of the guys had special peens, and other fun appendages that were useful in r rated scenes. Hopefully there’s more of that in the next book. It was only hinted at in this book.
I don’t want to be harsh. Honestly there’s nothing exactly terrible about this book. I just have a few issues that I can’t get past and it grew to me really disliking the MFC. She’s first described to be this, meek, sad, rejected lonely girl that glommed on to the first girl that befriended her and then let said friend walk all over her. When said friend ditches their derby team and becomes a menace she grows a back bone and stands up for herself. I’m all for that. Great character growth and all that jazz. But Rogue just seems to be vindictive and catty from the start so it’s hard to believe she’s anything but a mean girl really. She’s condescending to her guys. Belligerent to people she just meets and downright nasty for no real good reason. The scene with the restaurant hostess is unnecessary cattiness on Rogues part and annoying to read. And other scenes had similar setups. Rogue is the aggressor in almost every encounter and it just became too annoying to be enjoyable. There’s a difference between strong women and hateful ones and Rogue fell squarely into the hateful category in my opinion.
The storyline itself was also a bit confusing as to what exactly the group is fighting against. There are just too many mentions of incidents and the plethora of enemies it could be without actually explaining much about the enemy or why they would be targeted in the first place. I know there’s an Easter egg from other series mentioned in each book so reading in a particular order is offered to give these little clues but it didn’t help. I will continue to read and hopefully the storyline gets a little less confusing and maybe Rogue will stop acting like the drunk guy at the bar squaring up to anyone that dares look at his chick
This book had so many twists and turns and I was impressed with the author's mind to write all of it. Rogue is the FMC who was stabbed in the back by her now ex-BFF who then gets her new derby team to jump Rogue at a club. This forces Rogue to stay with her step-brother and his 4 friends to protect her. Typical storyline where they have all loved her since they were kids and that loves comes full steam ahead. The tension between her step-brother, Rebel and Rogue is burning off the pages. The group keeps getting hit from every which way it was all coming to a head at the end of the book.
From the foreword I expected more spice and relationship building. There were a lot of fade to black that I felt took away from the group dynamics. One in particular was a bi-awakening that I felt was crucial to have a whole scene. This happened twice. Another was when there was finally a whole group spice that was fade to black as well. These scenes were needed to fully play out for character and relationship building.
There were a lot of questions at the end that I hope will be answered in book 2. As well as some hints to one or two more bi-awakening moments that I hope won't be fade to black. I loved the storyline especially with overcoming body shaming and lack of confidence. Rogue is a true badass and I can't wait to see her shine.
Hell on Wheels is the first book of this fantasy shifter RH. The author uses multi POV from the main characters. This helps readers dive into the thoughts and feelings of each character, as well as the helping the plot of the story.
Rogue is interesting. She is damaged but pushes past that to stand strong. Fake it till you make it. Although being betrayed by her bestie isn't helping that stance, especially when she's attacked by the rival derby team...along with the ex-best friend. And it seems that there are bigger things in the works.
It's a good thing she is surrounded by her adopted brother and his friends. They quickly step in to help her try to figure what's going on. And the questions keep growing when a mysterious package shows up, with an invitation that she can't refuse.
She'll need her two demon mob princes, unseelie guardian, golden retriever hockey shifter, and phoenix shifter. A dangerous mystery is at play and it doesn't help when the parents get involved.
I was pleased to see a few mentions of characters from other books. It makes me smile when I know who they are and see them get tied into this story. I can't wait to see how things are revealed in future books. I need to know what's going on and who's involved.
This book was a total treat—packed with a juicy combination of tropes that kept me hooked from start to finish! Rogue gets an entire 'trope bouquet' and doesn't even have to choose. From brother’s best friend to friends-to-lovers, and even an adopted brother twist, this story has it all. There are plenty of lovely poly vibes that slowly develop, with a touch of ‘not-so-vanilla spice’ and fun truth-or-dare games thrown in for good measure. It’s definitely the author’s fastest burn to date!
What I especially appreciated was how the story explored themes of body shaming and self-confidence. Rogue is a true badass, and I can’t wait to see her continue to grow and shine. There are a lot of open questions at the end, though, and I’m eager to see if they’ll be answered in book two. There are also some tantalizing hints at bi-awakening moments that I really hope won’t fade to black.
Overall, this was a super fun and steamy read with great character development and emotional depth. If you love fast-burn romance with all the spicy tropes, this book is a must-read!
As always, my book reviews are totally voluntary, and no monetary compensation was received. The opinions I have expressed are completely my own.
I’ll be completely honest, I tried to read this book for as long as I could 😭 I didn’t want it to end!
We kick off Hell on Wheels receiving background on the characters for book 1 and their relation to our FMC Rouge.
Rouge is a 19yr old Unseelie Dark Fae/Succubus hybrid living in Bay City, and badass captain of the roller derby Babe City Bombers. Throughout the first couple of chapters we are also introduced to our MMCs and their relation to Rouge. Rebel, step brother to our FMC, he’s Unseelie as well. With Rebel comes his group of friends; Archer, lion shifter and future mate of Rouge. Damon, our sweetheart demon his twin Angelo the bad boy demon. Last but not least Javi our Phoenix bartender. These 5 men make up her group of mates. While Rouge went through the process of recognizing her mated, and growing those bonds, enemies also emerged from the shadows. In Hell on Wheels book 1 in the Faetal Attraction series, we learn of failed friendships, betrayals, upset supernatural parents, love, plenty of spice 🌶️ and much more gearing the readers up for what I’m sure will be quite a ride in future books to come. Looking forward to book 2 with anticipation, and to seeing what the infamous Appalachin will bring.
I’m so torn on this book. It wasn’t bad at all, but I def felt it had some issues her earlier books didn’t have. I felt like I could really tell it was written on/for KindleVella vs how her other books have been written.
I also really struggled with how character thoughts would be italicized and separate from the rest of the character’s internal monologue. It jerked me out of the book damn near every time. I can’t remember exactly, but I do assume that that is a common factor in all her books, but I just don’t remember it being so bothersome before this book.
I didn’t love the FMC, she wasn’t bad but just not super compelling as a character. Personally, I’m also not a super fan of the characters being teenagers vs Grown Ass people, especially with how just young this book read. Even compared to Delores, Rogue just seemed super young and immature and really stayed that way from P1- the end.
I love Cassandra Featherstone, and will read anything she writes, but compared to her pre-KindleVella releases, this book just isn’t the same, especially with the super young char
This book definitely had the spiciness & humor that keeps me coming back to Cassandra's books.
Rogue is one heck of a FMC. She is definitely feisty & strong willed & I absolutely love it! But the group of men that follow her around....thanks to her 'step-brother' makes this book equally as hilarious because of them.
Each guy has a unique skill set as well as personalities. And she only adds to it with how combative she can be, especially with Rebel.
Seeing the dynamic between Rogue & each of the guy's progress was a joy to read. And it was even more fun watching how Rebel fought so dang hard to keep that line between them, but she obliterated it.
It was also very interesting to see how they all handled all of the unknown variables being thrown at them between Mina then the twin's parents then to this gang that everyone is fearful of. But that ending definitely left me hanging on the edge of my seat. Like how are you just going to leave it there? So not fair!
I am for sure very excited to see what happens in the next book.
Roller derby RH -rogue has a need for speed be it skates, tires or hearts. She uses this speed as a distraction from all her emotional trauma she holds onto and is not ready to face. -her and her twin are adopted at a young age. Her adoptive parents sold her twin brother and adopted another boy, Rebel. Rebel is their golden boy, can’t do wrong in their eyes. - rogue grows up with rebel and his buddies. His buddies have been in love with rogue early on but could never act on it - rogue had a falling out with her ex-best friend Mina (fellow derby girl )when she switches to a rival team. This rival team gangs up and beats the crap out of rogue. This attack seems to go far deeper than she thinks and sets off a chain of events that changes her life forever. - love the breakdown of characters in the beginning of the book. I do wish there would be a cheat sheet for the Latin phrases Looking forward to the next book
Good goddess I absolutely love this book but what I would give to slap the ever loving demon out of Mina the witch is horrible user and I totally waiting for her downfall and it’s gonna be epic. I can’t believe Rebel thought his secret was a secret lol. That lion shifter is one of my absolute favorites he’s just so sweet and crazy. The twins I love that their personalities are so different yet the same in some ways. We can’t forget our Phoenix 🐦🔥 I love that he just doesn’t give a flying fluck what his rich parents want and becomes a bartender yet he’s so sweet and down to earth. Now onto Rouge her adopted parents are horrible creatures and I hope they bring them down a peg or hundred . She deserves nothing but happiness with her mates but first she needs to bring some evil hags down . Oh I really hope she finds her brother.

This book was hysterical. Cassandra Featherstone is the queen of snarky, spicy banter. I love how she has built a whole interconnected timelined multi realm convergence and all of her characters are amazing. Rogue is a hybrid unseelie fae / succubus and she's also the captain of the babe city rollers. The story opens with her best friend dumping her and Rogue mourns that friendship like the worst heartbreak. But she isn't alone, her older step brother and his four best friends are there to cheer her up. This story has so many twists and turns, so many amazing characters, treachery, high speed racing, so much spice, tails, horn, claws and magic Oh My! I loved this book and read it over a couple of days.
This book had lots of twists and turns that kept me turning the pages. After Rogue’s BFF stabbed her in the back she’s built some pretty tall walls around her. The only one she’s got and trusts is her stepbrother Rebel. Well some of his friends too, once she realizes they are her mates.
The twins Angelo and Damon have some hidden twists about their family which I think will be explosive in the next book. Javi and Archie still have to tell their parents about Rogue being their mate so there’s going to be that to look forward to as well.
Trying to figure out the mystery of who is out to get her keeps the characters guessing. Brings lots of steamy action and truth bombs about hidden feelings.
Steamy doesn’t come close to describing the heat in this one. I had no idea what to expect and I loved the insane ride the whole way. This is book one so don’t be surprised by a slight cliffhanger. There are so many amazing characters in this one. Rogue is the star of the story. She will face some tough challenges and a mystery on who may just be trying to end her. We have several types of paranormal that will keep you wondering what they can do. Demon mobs, guardians, hockey player and our star is some of that as well as a killer on skates and cars. She isn’t nicknamed Wheels for nothing. Can’t wait to see what trouble she will find herself in next.
This was a seriously wild ride with many different tropes to enjoy. We’ve got the sassy FMC Rogue who has some seriously challenges and betrayal to deal with along with being the roller derby captain. We’ve got shifters and a lot of insanity with intense action along with spice. I loved how sassy Rogue was and she was herself for good and ill. And the guys were a good mix with her. We also got multiple PoVs which I adored since it gave more depth to the developing relationships. Definitely well worth the read and just a lot of fun. I kept turning the pages since I needed to know what would happen next.
This is the first book in a new series set in the author's linked universe, and it's as good as the others in the same world!
Rogue is as feisty a heroine as I've read in a long time, surrounded by five very overprotective friends who are fated to be more. The relationships are strong and spicy within her group, which given the amount of drama they need to deal with from outside is a very good thing indeed!
The series is standalone, but there's mentions of people and situations from the other books, which I love, it makes the world feel fuller and more rounded.
Overall, I loved it, and can't wait to see what happens next.
I really loved this story, and the characters were fantastic. I really loved the FMC, Rogue, as she was seriously a bad a$$, and a cool roller derby skater.
Rogue has been seriously crushing on her stepbrother and his four friends for years, but she always thought they felt like she was just another little sister. They, on the other hand, have all secretly been in love with her since she was a kid.
When things start getting hot on AND off the derby rink, all of the boys step up to help her out of some crazy situations. They are now all on the hunt for why Rogue is being targeted by some very dangerous people. I cant wait to see what happens in the next book!
I don’t know how this author does it. She is writing a number of series at the same time, all with the same overall theme (reverse harem with the female being tough and able to take care of herself, but with some mystery surrounding her past) and all of the characters and storylines are so different. I think eventually the series will join together as they overlap. Every book I have read by this author is great and this one is no exception. I quickly got pulled into the story and didn’t want to put it down. I was able to lose myself in the characters and the way they interact was great. I’m eagerly looking forward to book 2.
Oh, this is good!!! I loved it so much. Who wouldn't love roller derby !!!!!!!! This is a great start to the series. I couldn't get enough of this book. There is so much going on. I can not wait for more. If you're ready for high heat, this is the book for you. I loved Rogue. She is such a great character. I loved the depth we already saw. I can not wait for more from her and the guys. I can not get enough. The next book can not come soon enough!!!! Make sure you get the bonus scene. It's a cross-over from another book in the same world.
Ok first I have to say that I absolutely love all the books Cassandra writes and this one is no different. I love that this one has so many tropes in it. Supernatural mafia second chances and everything in between. Rogue our fmc is strong and just all around awsome. I love that we get a roller derby experience in this with an evil ex best friend and men that are strong and supportive. I can’t wait for more in this world and the new series we have.
Loved it!! Cassandra never disappoints me with her books, because I loved it! The creativity and how original each story is, easily captures my attention. Rogue's story is just that. With some of my favorite tropes included... Step brother, brother's friends, why choose, and much more. Rogue made such a great FMC. I'm loving the guys too. Each of them are all different and I like the different dynamics. I think this was a great introduction and I look forward to the next book!
This book is super interesting. I love the fact that it has roller derby & racing. Those are two hobbies we don’t see very much in books so it was pretty cool. The characters are very interesting and well rounded and I of course love all the different stories going on within the story. I can’t wait to see how this unfolds in the next book. No one weaves a story quite like Cassandra Featherstone so I know it will be worth waiting for.
I don't think i have found anything by this author that i don't like. She knows how to write her stories and she can write beautiful hardcore, bad@ss, strongheaded FMCs. Action packed from start to finish this story promises a wild ride! I truly couldn't put the book down. I loved the main character and how well and thought out she was. The author has put a lot of work on this book and you can tell. Funny and entairtaining this book gonna hook you up to a bright new world!
Wow! This was my first book by this author and I had such a good time! This book was full of fun events such as street racing, raves and balls! This book did not lack excitement and action at any point. I felt the pacing was very good and the characters kept me interested. If you like a strong FMC then this book is definitely for you! Also if you enjoy RH paranormal fantasy then this will be an enjoyable book for you! I am so excited to continue this series and see where the story goes!
While I’ve been immersed in the large world the author has created, I’ve missed this series until I didn’t. And let me tell you, it’s what she delivers!
There’s all the intrigue one expects on a small scale with large dashes of cameos and interweaving from other series. I was smacking myself for not reading sooner since there so many connections to be made. Book two can’t come fast enough for me!
In typical fashion for this Author this book has it all. Spicy scences, intrigue and some good laughs thrown into the mix. Rogue is amazing as she handles everything that is thrown at her including her 5 knot head mates. Love where this story is going and I can't wait for the next book to see what happens next and if Mina finally gets what she deserves.
This book is so great and has more twists and turns than the race tracks that Rogue and Rebel drive on! The characters are all so brilliant and well fleshed out. This story fits in with the other author's works but also stands alone as a single read. Beware this is book 1/5 planned so it does end with a great many things unresolved but that's what makes it so fun!
