Issue 6 of the 2023 Transformers Run of Darren Warren Johnson. The Battle of the Factions rages on and the Autobots seem to be at the brink of extinction. But Humanity can offer a sacrifice to make things even. Still hooked on this one. Brilliant run, devastating and incredible!
There’s really nothing to dislike about this comic, from the animation to the storyline, everything has a great connection to Generation One Transformers.
Few hiccups within the issue but always a fun read with great art.
- Cliff Jumper not pulling the trigger. I guess you gotta have Starscream survive somehow (that’s twice now someone has been dead to rights and somehow they survive) - Kinda confused on the panel of Optimus throwing Devestator off the cliff like how did Optimus get waist level like that. Felt like it was a weird jump in the action and the reader was suppose to just go with it. - It looked like Carly got her legs (I thought everything below the waist) crushed but she doesn’t seem me bothered by it

DWJ does it again…the action-packed illustration draws you in but you stay for the heartbreaking story. Optimus ripping off Devastator’s finger…goddamn!
That was brutally amazing, I’m literally in tears over Sparky’s sacrifice and it just feels like so much was done so well in such a short amount of time. I love this entire series so much. So last issue revealed that starscream built the constructicons, which are construction themed transformers which can all form into one giant devastator…so now…good luck. The autobots go into an immediate retreat to get into the arc as fast as possible before they are squashed. And I have to admit I need to retract my comments about not bringing Carly along, as she is the only one with any sense. Her and cliffjumper are a bit back and out of the fight still, but she stops him from driving in and getting himself killed. She points out that they are but small and it the strongest which means they have to use their heads to stay alive and help the others, they need to find more firepower and they could do that if there was an alternative way into the arc. Cliffjumper knows of an access point in the middle and Carly has already spotted it. But things are still brutal as the devastator is stomping around and Optimus uses the chaos to run in and kick starscream to the ground real quick, lol. But as thundercracker runs in guns blazing, still yelling about the autobots paying for what they did to skywarp, Optimus runs in to defend Sparky, only for the devastator to finally get a grasp on Optimus’ leg. Unfortunately for starscream the devastator seems pretty simple minded, so it doesn’t check at all when it rips Optimus into the air…inadvertently hitting starscream with Optimus and sending him flying back, lol. But this funny moment is immediately ruined as Optimus is smashed and slid against the wall of the arc before being slammed into the ground. The other autobots are able to provide covering fire in order to grab Optimus and bring him inside. Unfortunately ratchet isn’t fast enough before the devastator gets its grip on his leg, and they are forced to slam the door down, breaking off his leg, in order to get away. Soundwave immediately diverted the devastator to another area to start digging inside based on his scabs, and right as Carly and cliffjumper get inside the arc and happen to find a very big gun…starscream follows right. Whine them, ready to kill both of them on the spot. But things are not good with Optimus prime and devastator is actively digging towards them. I desperately wish they could have found the corridor with the rebuilding tech, and Optimus wishes he had more hope left to give. He can feel himself giving way, so he takes the spark from out of his chest and tosses it to the ground for one of the others to take. But as it sits there it is almost as if Sparky is drawn to it. For as long as he can remember he has always wished there could be another way. When anything bad happened to his men, to Jimmy, or even to spike, he wished that there was a way to take their place, it was him instead of them. He now sees his chance, and as he steps inside the spark, giving his life energy and hope of a better tomorrow to it, he asks Optimus to watch over them for him, to to tell spike he is proud of him. Suddenly sparky goes inside of the alarm and completely rebuilds Optimus with his own life energy. Optimus takes the spark back up and promises sparky will not be forgotten and that he will protect spike and this planet. Suddenly the devastator breaks through the roof and Optimus grabs and rips its finger off. Thundercracker and soundwave are fighting right alongside it, but Optimus is specifically engaging with the devastator using megatron’s cannon and his own giant rifle to deliver a barrage of fire. Suddenly Optimus runs and jumps up to kick devastator back using both of his legs like a badass. Elsewhere, starscream is reminiscing about killing cliffjumper’s clan as he prepares to do it again. But this has given Carly enough time to move the giant gun off to the side into position and pull back on the huge trigger to blast starscream down. Cliffjumper now has the upper hand and a gun pointed right at starscream’s face. He has the moment to get his revenge and…he can’t do it. He thought he wanted this for so long, but he’s so tired of all of it. Unfortunately starscream isn’t and takes this opportunity to grab Carly as his hostage. At that very same moment, Optimus is driving and shooting at the devastator, leading it further up the mountain, only to stop once he reaches the top and plant himself in the ground. As the devastator barrels towards him, Optimus gets under it and uses his leverage to toss the devastator over the side of the mountain!! Devastator happens to fall at the exact moment starscream was backing out onto the arc’s engine, causing the devastator to brutally land right on top of him, freeing Carly in the process and allowing cliffjumper to grab and save her before falling to her death. She can’t help but show disappointment in cliffjumper as she is still fresh on the vengeance train and she believes he squandered his chance to end all of it by not killing starscream. And the fall didn’t kill starscream either unfortunately. The constructicons lived and were separated and immediately transformed and drove off to get starscream to safety. The rest of the decepticons are in full retreat as well. But there was a slight moment where Optimus got a chance to talk to soundwave and to try and convince him to stay with them to fin a way home together. For a slight moment as soundwave looked down at ravage it seemed like he could be convinced to come to the side of life, but his mood changed in a split moment as Optimus blocked a punch and soundwave hitched a ride with thundercracker out of there. Optimus desires peace but he is not foolish enough to let his guard down. As the issue comes to an end, the autobots have retaken the arc and I hope get access to the tools inside. But we end by going over to the hospital to find that spike has woken up. His first words, written not spoken, are to ask where his dad is. AWWWWWWW, RIP SPARKY.

An Optimus Prime versus Devastator battle that can only be done by the author of Do a Powerbomb!. What was that saying, "the bigger they are, the harder they fall".
This was a great first arc to a new series of Transformers comics. Full on robot-on-robot violence, and consequences for the squishy humans caught in the middle.
This was the best issue yet! Starscream is such a cowardly jerk. Spikes Dad is amazing! Artwork is unique gritty magic. And Optimus Prime... what can I say? He is the GOAT! 5/5
