Good Bad Magic #1-3

Good Bad Magic: Books 1-3: A Fun, Cozy Urban Fantasy series.

It's hard being a good witch when your clients want bad magic.

I'm a witch. Not a powerful witch, mind, but as Grandma liked to say, it’s all in the kindness, not the power. Grandma is gone now, but her dream of having a witch shop lives with me. So, when the opportunity to run my own shop presents itself, I move across the country to take it, no questions asked.

But maybe I should have.

The sexy local bounty hunter shifter thinks I’m up to no good, my clients keep asking me to use forbidden dark magic, and someone’s trying to sabotage my shop. Probably the same someone who reported me to the Witch Council and left a dead body in my bathtub.

Hah! Joke’s on them. As Grandma also used to say, it’s nothing a positive attitude, excellent cleaning supplies, and the complete annihilation of whoever has in it for me can’t fix.

Paraphrasing.

Join Hope in her dream to have the best witch shop in Old Olmeda, where magical mysteries abound and positivity always wins the day! Featuring witches, shifters, one sexy bounty hunter, and all kinds of magical creatures. Full of humor, mystery, plenty of heart, and a slow-burn romance.

Included in this set are the first three books in the
- Good Bad Witch
- Right Wrong Shifter
- Fresh Old Bounties

GOOD BAD WITCH BOX SET by ISA MEDINA

It's possible that Hope Avery has catapulted to my growing number of favourite witches. After reading this box set, she definitely was a major contender. Yeah, right up there with the best of them! Why, you might ask? I'll start off with this: "How do I love thee, Let me count the ways...."
A: she has no idea what she's doing but she's goodness personified, B: she's totally out of her depth but somehow finds a way, C: she's delightful, D: she's funny, E: she bumbles and stumbles into really weird situations, what fun watching her get out of them, F: she's exuberant and resourceful, even though the depth of her abilities is.... questionable, G: she's no pushover, H: she's smart, I: she has a real live ghost to contend with, which she does rather admirably, J: she's scheming, in the best possible way, K: she's relentless, L: she somehow manages to turn everything into a positive, M: she IS positive, she even does daily affirmations! See? I could use up the entire alphabet, easily! But you should read it to get the full extent of her awesomeness. Suffice to say, the author has created one of the most likeable, fallible characters that has me cheering her on through every bump in the road! And I simply adore how she compensates for her lack of her magical strength, ingenious! One of the sweetest, most trusting witches I've come across, someone who's an awesome friend. Can I love her more? Doubtful! I was literally rubbing my hands with glee throughout, I just want more of Hope and her crazy life. She's not crazy, but the situations that befall her are.

Ian, oh lordie Ian! Not only is he GORGEOUS inside and out (you'll have to dig around to find the "inside"!) he's a bounty hunter, he's reclusive, he's stoic, he's a shifter, he's reclusive, he's stoic, he's a shifter, he's ULTRA mysterious,; he's secretive and he has two adorable doggies, Fluffy and Rufus! What's NOT to like??? Contending with Hope's Joie de Vivre soon has him in a tail spin, she's just so.... HOPE! Once she sets her mind to it, there's NO stopping Hope.... I loved following Hope's trail of thought and her deducing skills as she pieces it all together in the most fun of ways, while trying, and failing, not to focus on all things Ian! The two of them fit like buttered bread, one without the other just doesn't taste quite as good, THEY are yummy together!

All the characters are unbelievably fun and funny, all of them. Ok, they're serious too but the way the author fleshes them out, what she brings out in them, is a wonder. To be able to "get" a character so fully, warts and all, and yet tease us with unknowns, is superb! This series is an easy, delightful read, I got to the end before I was even aware of it, each element propelling me forward, each event enticing me to read further. Hope is definitely one of my favourite witches, I KNOW there's more to her, i love the path the author takes me on, I love how beautifully paced the book is, and I love the skill the author portrays in her storytelling, in this very entertaining and amusing read. And the best? Well, Ms Medina has an incredible knack to have me wanting more....

Dear heavens is this author magical with her words! Her use and expertise with her prose is delightful! Look at this fab line, "Ian gave me a glacial stare that had my inter organs begging for heated blankets"!!!! Clever and ultra vivid, right? She catches me by surprise so often when I least expect it! Sublime! This is not a fast paced read, rather it's an ebb and flow one, not a heck of a lot of action but plenty of detective-ing, more character driven story with a steady progression. The humour is so subtle, superbly and easily slipped in and THAT'S another reason this author is a MUST read! Immensely compelling and fun, with a terrific storyline, playing out each note, each turn twisted just out of reach to a surprising conclusion! Absolutely awesome!!!!

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

3.75*

First time read the author's work?: No

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Haunted magical shop

Hope Avery is the new witch in town! She runs the local tea shop. Things get weird when a dead body keeps appearing and disappearing in her tub. A spell reveals the dark side of the last owner, who is now haunting the shop. Someone tries to take the shop from her and dark magic users think she makes dark magic potions. And the local bounty hunter has his eyes on her. But that parts ok. From ghosts to alphacon to evil spellbooks, Hope survives it all. With positive affirmations and good vibes.

Such a great trilogy. Love it!

This is a nice cozy fantasy series and a simple read. I recommend for people getting into the genre.

The only thing I don’t care for is the rush of the ending of each of the books. And the fact that you really don’t get closure for some things. It’s possible these things will be answered in subsequent books but I don’t think I’ll be continuing with the series. Unless I have nothing else to read and with more than 100 books on my want to read list it may be awhile.

Full of Hope!

Yes, that’s cheap of me, saying a book is full of hope when the protagonist’s name is Hope, but it really is. Hope doesn’t let anything get her down for long, and she’s full of affirmations that would be good for anyone, not just witches. This is a cute series with action, intrigue, and newfound friends.
