Still reeling from the Morrigan taking Wren, Ellie and the Faoladh are continuing their lives when Zues shows up and drops an Animus on Halfling House's doorstep. Knowing it's a trap, but not knowing what else to do, Ellie takes in Orrin. She learns he is a deserter, and Zeus is angry with him and this is part of his punishment. Once they get the full story, Ellie, her family and the Faoladh decide they will all help Orrin find what he is looking for. Ellie must also reconnect with not only her mother, Nyx, but more of her pantheon as well in order to get the help they all need to stay away from Zeus' trap. We do get interactions with all the characters, but this book is definitely more focused on Ellie and her inner turmoils.
This is another emotion al roller coaster ride for Ellie (and us as well!). Not only is it taking a toll on her to have one of her enemies in the house, but with Zane more tired than usual she is really worrying. She wants to be able to take care of everyone all the time and keep them in a protective bubble, but luckily she is learning to let others make decisions for themselves. She is also learning to let others help her as well. From the Faoladh to her mother and the pantheon, she is slowly able to give trust and ask for help.
I enjoy the cozy, low stakes feel of all of these books. You really get to know the characters as they are introduced and really delve into their stories. You really understand why they are doing what they do and can empathize with them. In this book it was Orrin who was introduced and you can't help but feel for him after everything that happens. And not to say there is no action at all, because towards the end we do get to see some fighting with some nail-biting moments. And after the revelations in this book, I can't wait for the next one!

This is a heartwarming addition to the Halfling House series. Victoria Vassallo never lets me down with her inclusive stories of community in a rural setting.

I really enjoyed seeing Clara and Shade play more significant parts in this book, as well as watching them grow into increasingly adult roles in their extended family. They are both likeable characters and bring different perspectives to the narrative with their youth, unique magics and aspirations.

The larger presence of the Greek pantheon was a surprise to me, although after the ending of the last book and given the title of this one I should have seen that coming. Their appearance really challenges Ellie and the Faoladh's desire for a peaceful life so it will be interesting to see where the author takes that storyline but I can say I loved how Ms Vassallo took those elements and spun them into a magnetic story that at it's foundation was a message of acceptance and belonging.

The strong found family trope that I love about this series is still very much there and is explored from so many angles this time. New characters test the forgiveness of the core group, and following as they talk through their prejudices in group discussions is fascinating. As always, watching Ellie and Mason together is lovely - they do their best to treat each other as equals and transgressions are chided gently and forgiveness offered graciously.

The bonding ritual of a cup of tea always makes me smile. Such a simple thing, yet it establishes friendships and maintains closeness. And can be a judge of character - " 'So, how do you take your tea?' ". IYKYK!

Sanctuary At Halfling House is an appealing story, with family at it's core and a little action creeping in at the edges. It would make an entertaining addition to anyone's library.

How do these just keep getting better? I loved everything about this book! Ellie kind of got the short end of the stick as the Goddess of compassion, pity and mercy. She feels everything from others around her. Yet she somehow manages to turn it into a strength. I feel like she has great character growth in this one. More of her history with the gods and goddesses was revealed. I really enjoyed reading it and seeing the interaction. I love that the existence of different pantheons is acknowledged and respected. Several continuing story lines had surprising reveals that tie things together. I'm trying to write this without spoilers. I highly recommend reading The Briarmoor Chronicles. It's really really good! Anyone who enjoys urban fantasy will love it.

Another heartwarming and cozy visit with the Halfling House series.

Ellie and the Faoladh still grieving the loss of Wren, but otherwise living as usual, when Zeus knocks on Ellie's door and leaves an unconscious Animus her doorstep all sorts of things unfold, and are revealed. Of course, it's a trap, but without options, Ellie takes in the Animus, Orrin.

Zane is more tired than usual and no one knows why, halfling dragon and all (but he's fine ya'll, COZY.) I adore the feelings of found family and community pulling together to help. I love the subtle inclusion of LGBTQIA as another adored community member living their life without explanation or note.

Absolutely recommend. Already looking forward to the next one.

I am always struck when I read a book by this author is how she conveys such loving from our main character. Ellie is a goddess of compassion, and it really shows. In this latest, Ellie has a visit from her mother that will change things in her town depending on Ellie’s answers. I love how the author has more than one pantheon in her universe, and it’s fun to get to know them. I can’t say much about this latest book because I don’t want to give away spoilers, but I’m excited to say it’s as good as the rest of the books. I’m excited about the next one and what it’ll bring for Briarmoor residents. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I was fortunate enough to be included in the ARC team and received a copy of this book directly from the author. It was a most enjoyable book continuing the tale of the Greek Goddess Elios (Ellie) who had left the Greek Pantheon and is now living in Australia with a mortal in a village of witches, animal shifters and more.

In this heart-warming, and sometimes amusing, episode she is confronted with a new challenge as Zeus threatens the safety of the Sanctuary by “dumping” an animus on her doorstep. Is he a new ally, or a new threat?

Intrigue, suspense and a nice ending as her new family in Briarwood grows and comes together.

Please start these series of books.

It is cozy fantasy about a goddess with her chosen family where the foster kids each have their own kind of magic and need to adapt to live peacefully in their sanctuary.
Sometimes it is a struggle to just go through the day but the help of her boyfriend Mason helps a lot.

The main part of the book is about trust, understanding that every one is different.
That way you set an example for the kids and you build a equal relationship.
With so many different magical beings and non magical people it is difficult to keep the peace and this is needed to be able to rely on each other.
They live in a sanctuary but that also comes with a cost.
The story continues right after the second book and you have to read that one first.

While Ellie struggles with her kids, Ellies mother Nyx comes to visit and brings a lot of chaos with her.
Meanwhile Zeus drops an unwanted visitor who is surprisingly familiar to one of the Faolad residents. But is he welcome addition in the sanctuary or is he a pawn to destroy it?

How this all connects is a joy to read and an intricate web of storylines woven into one by the writer.
this book ends with a little cliffhanger which makes you scream out for the next installment.

I received an advanced review copy of the book for free, and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

This cozy urban fantasy may as well be a supernatural soap opera, with all the drama that keeps popping up. Long-estranged parents, missing parents of lost children, quarreling gods, divine tricksters and lots of dual-heritage children getting into the things that children do make for mayhem, confusion and a newly-reinstated goddess scratching a line in the sand. I am enjoying this - the children's antics as much as the godly shenanigans - and I am already looking forward to the next book.

I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Ellie's story continues to evolve with more complications to keep her life exciting.  Family and community are vital to Ellie, so when both are challenged, she has to delve back into her inner goddess and her estranged family to find her solutions. This instalment of the Briarmoor Chronicles gives us more insight into Ellie's gorgeous halflings as well as introducing new and interesting characters from amongst the Greek Pantheon. The new developments in the story create more depth and affection for the wonderful characters.
