Certain dates have entered the lexicon of popular understanding, becoming symbols that encompass complex stories, emotions, and understanding. Nowhere is that more true than in 9/11. These three simple digits represent a series of terror attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001, that left more than three thousand people dead, destroyed the best-known landmarks in New York City, and caused a wave of outrage across the world.

On this date, nineteen terrorists associated with the Islamic terrorist organization al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airliners. Two were flown into the World Trade Center buildings in New York City, one was crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and the fourth went down in a field in Pennsylvania. None of the passengers on any of the flights survived. These were the most devastating terror attacks ever carried out against the United States, and their impact would shape the subsequent history of large areas of the world. As a direct result of 9/11, the United States led invasions of first Afghanistan and then Iraq.

What happened on that day in September 2001? Why was the Bush administration seemingly unaware of the threat posed by al-Qaeda? Did American intelligence agencies have any warning of an impending attack? And what happened after? This is the story of the September 11 attacks.

Published in 2024 by Hourly History.

Hourly History's telling of the events of September 11, 2001 is surprisingly well-told for a history that is supposed to take a person about an hour to read.

Is this a complete history? Hardly. Why not? Read the first paragraph again.

But, it gets all of the elements across in broad strokes - the motives of the hijackers, the reasons for their targets, and the mass casualties - but not as bad as they could have been thanks to the bravery and professionalism of the NYPD and FDNY.

The book moves on to discuss the aftermath, including tearing down the remains of the buildings, the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, beefed up airport screenings, and the invasion of Afghanistan in order to search for the Osama Bin Laden and other terrorists responsible for the attacks. All of it is tied up neatly in a bite-sized e-book that younger readers (not kids, but younger adults that simply don't remember 9/11) could read to grasp the basics.

I rate this e-book 4 stars out of 5.

More than Conspiricy Theorys Afterward

The book overlooks an event that happened at the world trade center before 9/11. That was when a group drove a truck of explosives into the basement garage, set them off near a foundation for the tower, shaking the building some but not much damage. Initial question is why that did not lead to investigations that might have foreseen the airplane approach to bring them down? Second, near the end of the book the author does not detail the importance of those tower foundations in providing room for underground inspectors to get around, leading to discovering that the basin walls that surround the towers were cracking and might collapase leading to flodding most of underground NYC. The discovery of the cracking wall led to getting in touch with construction companies around the country that could bring rigs into NYC and place tie-backs through the wall on which to place a plate to keep the basin walls from collapsing. Bringing the rigs together as quiclkly as possible was an achievement equalling or exceeding the ability of Utilities to bring rigs together to restore a collapsed power line.

THe effort and accomploshment of bringing togeter the tieback rigs is a more important part of the story then conspiricy theories.

This is concise and clearly written, and it provides an explanation of the events leading up to the horrifying disaster of 9/11. Where this book excelled, in my opinion, was the explanation of the many deaths related to 9/11 that were not included in the statistics. One example was the number of people who died young because of debris in the air for months after the initial catastrophe.

The author(s) explained the extra deaths we now associate with the main events. However, I was surprised that the book did not mention airplane changes to prevent future disasters (locking the more substantial door before the flight begins).

This book clearly shows the path of the hijackers on that fateful day. It also reminded me of the airplane I forgot about—Flight 93. I also didn't remember that each of the people on that flight was nominated for the Congressional Gold Medal for their valor in making the hijackers abort their mission. This book is well-written and worth a read. Overall score = VG.

This is a nice analysis of the reasons some conspired to commit the 9/11 attacks

This is a nice discussion of the build up to the desire to do the evil deed of 9/11. Some of the discussion of the random conspiracy theories was incidental and not germane. After all, who even heard of pizzagate, who cares about it, and what on earth does it have to so with so called pizzagate?

Concise retelling of the events of the attack. It gives a lot of useful information to that infamous day as to how it all unfolded.

Too short, not enough detail, no illustrations, a good newspaper writer could do better than this pamphlet, can't call it a book, too short.
