A former child star learns that holiday magic can come from a change in perspective in this charming and hilarious holiday rom-com.
Charlotte hates the holidays. As a former child actress, she starred in a modern classic of a holiday movie, and its fans won’t let her move on. When a piece revealing that her reluctance nixed plans for a reboot, she flees to London to spend the five-week countdown to the holidays with her sister.
But the ghosts of Christmas past follow her there when she ends up at Eden Priory, a filming location for the movie she has never visited. There, after being recognized by a fan while viewing the extraordinary holiday decorations, she’s accidently left behind, forcing her to accept a ride back to London by Graham, the son of the owners. Their family business—and the funds to keep their historic house running—relies on holiday cheer, and Graham knows a visit from a holiday star would bring in more visitors.
Now an illustrator, Charlotte accepts a commission illustrating iconic holiday movie scenes in London and its environs. Graham offers to help escort her, as long as she’ll commit to an art workshop at Eden Priory. But as Charlotte’s chaotic family holiday goes awry, she begins spending more time scouting locations with Graham. Charlotte may not love Christmas, but is it so bad if you’re also falling in love?

you should definitely add this book to your winter tbr. it’s a great story with an engaging plot and christmas aesthetic.
little preview: main female character is a former actress who is being haunted by her childhood role while male character is actually the owner of the house where she filmed that specific movie.
it was so fun to see characters interact and build bonds. they both have incredible families who have their own plot lines, creating an incredible picture for a reader. i definitely skipped some scenes because i just couldn’t keep up with charlotte’s hate toward that one role. she mentioned it like million times, and i still can’t understand why she acted so weird, if only 2-5 people ever recognized her (i do understand her and wanting to be know for her art but still she was to focused on acting). but overall, it was still so exciting to see characters being passionate and engaging.
chemistry between main characters was strong and their trips were my favorite parts. if you like christmas, movies, art, “london boy” by taylor swift and traveling, check out this book on october 22!🤍
Thank you Netgalley and Atria Books Publicity Department for providing me with this arc in exchange for an honest review
You already know what this book is. It's cute, sweet and Hallmark-y. The vibes were good. I will say I think I would have enjoyed this book more if it had been duel pov. I'm learning that I prefer duel pov Romances. The male love interest didn't annoy me and I liked our main character.
Not much to say. You know what this kind of book is and if you like that, then you should enjoy it. If you want to escape reality( who in America doesn't) than maybe pick this up instead of doom scrolling.
I received a free copy of, Christmas Is All Around, by Martha Waters, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Former child actress Charlotte is not a fan of the holidays, this year she decides to spend the holidays in London. People seem to have their own agenda, even at Christmas. I liked Charlotte, she intrigued me.
One of the things I love about this author is that she comes up with the best storylines. They are completely unique and do not have a recycled theme. Waters is an amazing storyteller and I never hesitate to grab her books!
This story is a blend of fun and witty conversations and actions found throughout the book. Her characters are memorable and hilarious especially when we meet the reason for birth control, her niece!
The female main character is a bit strong minded when it comes to anything Christmas, because of her past and family ties, so experiencing Christmas in England has her screaming a bit inside.. and maybe a few times outside too!
The male main character is a surprising treat to her vacation and a delightful addition to balancing out Charlotte. Their banter is awesome and their growing romance is sweet, swoony, and steamy.
Christmas Is All Around is a Christmas story that will become a memorable part of your holiday romances. Definitely not one to be missed. I hope that Waters continues to write her historical romances and now her contemporary romances as well. She excels at both and I now have a new genre to follow of hers!
~~~~ * I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. * Full review - https://amidlifewife.com/christmas-is...
The banter in this one was god-tier; so so charming and fun. I also loved how Martha was able to weave in some histrom themes & thoughts into this contemporary in a way that felt right. God I love a holiday romance
⤿ Thank you to Atria Books for the arc through netgalley and a finished physical copy in exchange for an honest review!
it was definitely the move to read this book during Christmas time, it gave ALL the Christmas vibes that were exactly what I wanted. i know that my review is sitting at 3 stars and so it might seem like this wasn't a good book, but I think parts were just not for me. there's definitely a lot of things about this book that will work for so many people, so please don't think that it's horrible based off the rating, let me explain my thoughts!
this is about the main character who starred in a Christmas movie when she was younger, but wants nothing to do with it as an adult. she ends up working at the house (as a tourist attraction) where it was filmed and falling a bit for the son of the owner. she hates Christmas, but she starts to come around to it a bit as the story begins to move forward.
there were many times throughout this story that there were some moments that had me laughing, there's lots of humor in this story and that was one of the best parts. i wish there had been even a little more in the second half of the book, as that was when I felt the tone shift to be a little more serious. the overall vibe though was definitely giving hallmark movie and it was soft and sweet, and the banter between the characters was enjoyable. i feel that there could've been a bit more going on in the story personally, but the simple story was also beneficial to create the Christmas vibe for sure.
overall this was a simple cute holiday romance which is definitely a vibe and something that I just had to find the right time to read, and it might've not been this moment. there's nothing horrible about this book either and if you love hallmark movies you should definitely try this book!
↬ trigger warnings: cheating mentioned, death of family member mentioned
If you’re looking for some cozy, cute Christmas book… stay away from this book!!!
Seriously, I’m all in if the trope is grumpy guy x sunshine girl but this was grumpy guy x grumpy girl 😭 These two just walked around complaining and hating about everything. Reading about their dialogues was painful and made me depressed. This book does NOT put you into a Christmas mood but makes you despise it since the characters keep complaining and hating about everything Christmas related, why would anyone enjoy reading this while wanting to be in a festive mood??
I also couldn’t stand charlotte complaining about how much she hates being a former child actress in a Christmas movie. Like girl… WE GET IT!!😭
I am reading many Christmas related books lately as it’s the season and gave only 5 stars to them all until now but this just wasn’t it and made me frustrated
Charlotte, a former child star from a beloved holiday film, dreads the season and the constant attention it brings. Hoping to escape, she visits her sister in London but ends up stranded at Eden Priory, a filming location from the movie. There, she meets Graham, whose family owns the estate and relies on holiday tourism to survive. Charlotte agrees to illustrate scenes from the film to support their gift shop, and as Graham escorts her to each location, an unexpected connection begins to form. An original holiday romance.
Charlotte was a grump, but she was not bitter or sullen. Graham was encouraging and optimistic without being foolish or oblivious. There were a lot of really great moments. Charlotte and Graham have a strong connection that naturally grew into a friendship that perfectly evolved into a romantic relationship. The scouting trips that they took together to these iconic film locations were all highlights.
I loved Martha Waters' historical romance series. This book didn't quite live up to those books because it lacked the humorous and playful tone that was present in her other series. Charlotte, Graham, and their families were a great cast of characters; there were certainly antics here and there, but the overall story just felt a little flat. It was cute and had a lot of potential, but I needed more.
Rating 3,5 Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for providing a copy in exchange for an honest review!
I have liked Waters writing before in a historical setting and was curious to try a contemporary! (Descriptions found at end of my review)
Should I read in order? I think this is a stand alone?
Basic plot: Charlotte plans on spending the holidays (which she hates) with her sister but when she meets a stripping reindeer her holiday adventures change track.
Give this a try if you want: - contemporary romance - holiday romance - London setting - American heroine / English hero pairing - bit of a grumpy heroine that hates Christmas - artist heroine (former child actress) - low steam – I believe 1 light scene and some mentions/alluded to scenes
Ages: - heroine is 29, hero is 33
First line: Whenever Charlotte was feeling particularly gloomy about the state of the world, finding herself at the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport inevitably made it worse.
My thoughts: This one was really cute! A bit of a grumpy heroine that hates holidays meets someone that entertains society with holiday cheer. This had some really great banter and humor and just such a sweet falling for each other.
I do wish Waters had more steam! I’m always left wanting a bit more in the bedroom, or more tension and longing between the mains. But I find her books generally really sweet and enjoyable and always delightfully humorous!
Full break down on what my ratings above mean here: Overall: How I felt about it everything considered! Readability: How ‘readable’ was the book? Did I fly through it? Did I have to tell myself to pick it back up repeatedly? Were any passages confusing? (I will probably score like (1) is literally unreadable due to formatting/typing errors, etc (2) There were lots of errors that made it difficult to read OR It was extremely confusing and I had to reread passages to make sense of it OR I disliked it so much I had to bribe myself to keep reading (3) I didn’t really want to keep reading and would have preferred to abandon the read and start something else OR some minor continuity issues/confusion (4) I liked it fine, maybe a minor error or 2. I was happy to pick it up when I had time. (5) I never wanted to put this down. I thought about it when I wasn’t reading it. I hid in the bathroom from my kids to read. I threw inappropriate food at my children for dinner so I could read instead.) Feels: Totally subjective to each person but did the book give me any tingles? Any butterflies? Did it rip my heart out (in a good way?) Emotional depth: How well do I feel I know the characters at the end? How much did I feel their emotions throughout the story? Sexual tension: Again, subjective, but how strong was the wanting and longing to me between the characters? A book might have strong sexual tension without a single touch. Romance: Was there romance? Did romantic things happen? This can be actions/words/thoughts of the characters and again is subjective. Sensuality: This is how the intimate scenes are written. Kisses and sexual scenes – how sensual were they? Were they on the mechanical side? Was there emotional pull tied in? Were the details explicit or flowery? These are subjective but generally (1) too short to get a good judgement (2) not all what I'm looking for - very vague or flowery prose (3) either not explicit enough or not enough emotional pull (too mechanical/physically descriptive without the emotions) (4) what I love in a scene (5) absolute perfection - perfect balance of emotional longing and explicit descriptions Sex Scene Length: How long the bedroom scenes are (generally (1) is 1-3 sentences (2) is a few paragraphs to a page-ish (3) is about average, a few pages (4) more well developed scenes, quite a few pages with descriptions (4) the majority of the book takes place in the bedroom. This is always hard to tell for me on audio! Steam Scale: Generally, each flame is a scene. If scenes are super close together I sometimes combine them. If a scene is super short or so vague I don’t know what’s happening, I don’t count it. There’s some levels of grey but generally the number of flames is how many sex scenes there are (I max out at 5 so I’ll put a + after if there’s more than that)
Christmas Is All Around by Martha Waters is cute! Charlotte hates Christmas partially because her parents didn't make good memories during the holiday and partially because she starred in rom-com set during the season when she was a child that the fans will never let her forget. She escapes to London after she's outed as the reason why the sequel is not happening. While in London she meets Graham who is helping his family save their estate. Graham hires Charlotte to paint Christmas movie themed estates for them to sell in the house and while she draws them, they spend time together and something seems to be sparking along the way and maybe Charlotte might stop hating Christmas due to it.
I enjoyed this book a lot. I liked Charlotte a lot and I thought Graham was a nice MMC. I liked Charlotte's character development when it came to her family, I thought that was very nice. I also liked how she grew to appreciate the new memories that can be made even if something is associated with something unpleasant. I thought Graham's protection of his family was just so nice. I did not love his sisters because it didn't seem like anyone was seeing anything from his perspective or trying to at least. I did think that sometimes the book tried to be oh so clever and point out the tropes that were happening. I don't really like when books become that self-aware so I had to deduct some stars because it kept on taking me out of the story. I thought that the third act breakup didn't have enough longing so I deducted half a star for that.
Overall though the story is cute and puts you in the holiday spirit. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a quick fun holiday rom com. I thought it was a little hallmark movie in a book which I believe was what the book intended.
Tropes: One bed, holiday romance, forced proximity, boss/employee (sort of)
Thank you to NetGalley, Atria, and Martha Waters for letting me read this ARC in exchange for an honest review, all opinions are my own.
What a perfectly light-hearted Christmas romance! Charlotte is a former child actress and there's no escaping the one film she starred in: Christmas, Truly, a Love Actually-type holiday movie. Therefore she's not pleased when she winds up on a family excursion to the home where the movie was filmed. But that's where she meets Graham, whose famous ancestor owned the home and who is trying to figure out a way to keep it going.
Charlotte and Graham have great banter. I loved watching their relationship develop, first for professional reasons and then for something more. While they both have gone through difficult things, particularly Graham losing his father, they're not dwelt on for long. But there's still good emotional heartstrings—it made me tear up. Just a delightful reading experience through and through. I have a feeling I'll be revisiting at the holidays for years to come.
Note: I DNFed the author's historical romance debut and haven't read anything else by her. I figured it would stay that way but a friend loved this book so much, she gifted me a copy. I'm so glad she did. If Waters writes more contemporary romance going forward, I'll be reading it.
Characters: Charlotte is a 29 year old white American illustrator and former child actress. Graham is a 33 year old white British accountant and vegetarian who wears glasses. This is set in London and Upper Larkspur, England.
Content notes: emotional neglect by FMC's parents, toxic parents, financial stress, FMC's parents have a tempestuous relationship (multiple affairs and separations but they never divorce), discussion of artist whose wife and mistress lived in the same house and who didn't acknowledge his children born out of wedlock, past death of MMC's father (cancer), baby vomit, on page sex, alcohol, inebriation, excessive drinking, hangover, marijuana (secondary character), ageist jokes, gendered pejoratives, ableist language
Is Charlotte the main character’s name in every Christmas rom com book? Lol cause this is like the third Charlotte for me.
This holiday rom com was fine. It took me a little bit to get into, but once Graham entered the chat I was like hmmm ok he is promising. Cause Char girl, you ain’t it.
TITLE: CHRISTMAS ALL AROUND AUTHOR: MARTHA WATERS PUB DATE: 10.22.2024
I am still enjoying my holiday themed books and if you ask me, I can read these all year round. I Just love all the cozy vibes it brings me and I am all for heartwarming stories.
I just love this book and anything Martha Waters writes. This funny rom com had all the elements I love. Charlotte is a child actress who hates Christmas even after being famous for her Christmas movie and Graham is the absolute perfect book boyfriend. I love the chemistry and the fresh take on a holiday romance.
Really cute and charming. I just wished the ending was more of a HEA and not just a vague “we’ll figure out the long distance thing” (TWO countries!) nowadays, in newer romances this seems to be the thing. I just love a good actual HEA. Marriage etc lol. (Reading other reviews I see I’m not the only one disappointed by the lack of ending. This is a ROMANCE book!)
While this is all about a woman who hates Christmas, the romance is no bah-humbug. I absolutely adored Graham and Charlotte’s story. This was nothing as I expected yet everything that I love.
I have become a huge fan of Ms. Waters and this book, like her previous works, is fresh and original. The storyline kept me engaged and I could not turn the pages fast enough. Everything about this pulled me in. There is just something about the way this author writes that I find highly addictive and Christmas is All Around is another example of the magic she wields.
Heroine POV Safe no ow/om drama; h not a virgin; H not a player Triggers no apparent triggers Steam 3 / 5; not too explicit ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
In my sprint to reach my reading goal, I’ve read three romances in the past two weeks, and this was my favorite of them all, sitting at a solid 3.5 stars. So what does that say about the state of things.
Honestly, it was a creative premise, which is rare in the genre these days—credit where credit is due !! The protagonist was infuriatingly stubborn (perhaps my least favorite trait in a romance lead), but all the other characters that slapped sense into her throughout the story were refreshing. A ridiculous third act break up, but the mmc (whose name I’ve already forgotten despite finishing the book it five minutes ago) made up for it with glasses and a British accent I guess.
Oh also I’ve had it (!!) with the “well yeah maybe if I were in a romance book”s and the “this is starting to feel like a romance novel”s and all other variations of meta references to the existence of the romance genre and its tropes !! I am done.
this one’s definition of a book that can give u all the old and classic xmas vibes and it’s perfect as a start to immerse yourself in the holidays mood!!
this was my first book written by martha waters and it won’t be my last! it’s written in third pov and as the cover suggests it’s set in the uk during the holidays, the story’s about charlotte,a former childhood star and let’s say that she isn’t in the mood for the xmas vibes but well life has a different plan for her and she’ll fall in love with an english man trying to save his home!
a classic,easy,xmas story that feels like an hallmark movie and that could be a perfect escape and enjoyable read! predictable maybe? yes but who cares? we all need sometimes a book like this just for the comfort vibes and fun!
a lot of thanks to headline,netgalley and martha waters for an early digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion!
An adorable Christmas romance that didn’t come across super tropey. MMC and FMC were cute and the pacing worked beautifully. Also I love books set in London that truly utilize the location well!!
Thank you @atriabooks @netgalley for the #gifted ebook!
💭This was a fun Christmas read. I liked the chemistry between Charlotte and Graham. I liked that their relationship felt real and not very cheesy. All the characters were entertaining as well. I liked all the banter and all the fun Christmas activities. The familial relationships in the book were also a highlight for me. My only complaint is that I wish we had gotten Graham’s point of view as well. Dual POV always tends to work better for me. Charlotte also kind of annoyed me at times. Overall, a fun and cozy Christmas read with just a dash of spice. 3.5⭐️
📚 Read this if you like… Christmas in London Cozy holiday vibes Banter Family time for the holidays
4.5 ⭐️ I have to be honest, I go into most holiday reads with pretty low expectations and usually anticipate something around three stars. Thankfully, CHRISTMAS IS ALL AROUND was much more entertaining than I expected and will likely be one of my favorite festive reads of the year!
In this one, we meet Charlotte a one hit wonder in the child acting world who has recently turned down the opportunity to reprise her role in a reboot of the beloved Christmas film (I’m equating this to Love, Actually). After some angry fan interactions she flees to London to visit her sister and despite her best intentions, the grumpy woman falls in love (shocker!!!!).
From my goodreads sleuthing, it appears this author mainly writes historical romance and it was really fun to see some of her obvious passion peeking through in a very modern day plot. I tried to figure out if any of Graham’s relatives ever made an appearance in The Regency Vows series, but no such luck! I shall report back as soon as I get to those books!
As with most seasonal reads, CHRISTMAS IS ALL AROUND is a bit cheesy and predictable but the humor is a little more tongue in cheek and the characters fully recognize (and banter about) the over the top Christmas cheer. Plus, there’s some spice and a cocktail making competition! Cheers to both!
I mostly loved the UK setting and now I’m even more excited to visit at Christmastime. I also really adored the side characters. Charlotte’s sister and brother-in-law were equally neurotic and adorable and I really appreciated when Ava finally called Charlotte on her BS.
Thanks to the publisher for allowing me to be an early reader! All opinions are my own.
I love a grumpy character, especially one who holds a grudge against the holiday season, but Charlotte went beyond grumpy—she was really hateful. It’s not that she didn’t have a good reason for her bitterness, but oof, her overwhelming negativity dragged the story down for me.
Though now an artist, Charlotte is a former child actor who can’t seem to escape her iconic role from the beloved movie Christmas, Truly (similar to Macaulay Culkin after Home Alone). To avoid further scrutiny for refusing a reboot, she flees to her sister's home in London as the holidays approach.
By chance, she ends up at the English manor where the movie was filmed—and crosses paths with Graham, the charming son of the owners. Despite this adorable setup, I didn’t find the story itself very interesting. The plot mainly revolves around Graham showing Charlotte various iconic movie locations for her illustration commission, but it all fell flat for me.
In the end, the story does offer a sweet message about gratitude, and Charlotte does experience some character growth, but overall, I just didn't care for this one.
(heat level: a couple open-door scenes, mild to moderate details)
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The long and short of it is, I didn’t love it and I didn’t hate it. This was a cute Hallmark-style holiday romance, but it wasn’t my favorite. I wish the romance had been a bit more enticing and the FMC a little less negative.
Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for the ARC of Christmas is All Around!
Charlotte HATES Christmas. She tries to keep the fact that she was a child star of a highly successful Christmas movie a secret but when there is national outcry over the fact that she is the sole reason it won't be rebooted Charlotte leaves for her annual visit to her sister in London early. Her sister has a 6 month old baby and so they are doing Christmas BIG this year for baby's first Christmas. One of their Christmas outings takes them to a film location for Charlotte's Christmas movie. Through a series of events, Charlotte becomes reliant on the owners of the house for a ride and soon develops a kind of friendship with the handsome Graham who is desperate to keep his family home. But will they find a way to save each other?
I did not enjoy this book. Charlotte is a narcissistic bitch. She hates Christmas, she hates babies, she hates her parents. She has no redeeming qualities and I have no idea what the blandly handsome Graham sees in her since she is even extra bitchy towards him. Her sister even calls her out on her constant complaining but there are no changes to Charlotte's behavior. If you enjoy Christmas romances, I don't recommend you pick this one up as it is mostly just a constant condescending commentary from Charlotte on how much she hates everything about it.
Mixed feeling about this holiday romance. The MMC was cute and sweet and British✨ The setting was cute and sweet and British✨
But my main issue was Charlotte. I found her incredibly unlikable. The reason she hates Christmas was honestly kind of dumb😅 But worse than that was her constant complaining about her baby niece. Mind you, Charlotte is a 29 year-old adult woman and I’m here to tell you, Charlotte, that babies cry. This is one of the only ways they can communicate and the fact that you didn’t want to spend time with your own niece over the holidays just because you have this dumb reason for hating Christmas is honestly unforgivable. Nieces, nephews and babies in general are a gift to the world and you my friend are the immature baby.
Besides that, the story was fine…😅
Oh also! As far as spice this did have one open door scene, easy to skip but I am annoyed that I was told that this was a closed door romance. K thanks☺️
Thank you Atria for this gifted copy!! I love you always and I wish this would’ve worked better for me.
Thank you Atria Books for my copy! All thoughts are my own.
I wasn’t too sure about this book, as I haven’t read any of the author’s historical romances, but after a review from a trusted friend I moved it up my TBR. And I LOVED it. It was such a fun, festive book with a lot of heart. It also has excellent audio production and was a great companion during this transitional time before December. It was Christmassy, but not Hallmark Christmassy.
What I Liked:
The Premise—If you asked me what is one thing I’d want before I retire from an acting career, it would be to be in a classic Christmas movie. They’re my favorite films and I love that they are a part of families’ traditions each year. So I thought it was fun to see the effects of that, especially on a child star!
The Humor—This was a really cheeky, fun book and I thought the banter was nice between all the characters.
The Cozy but Not Cheesy Vibes—This is what I look for in a Christmas book! I don’t want holiday pun names, I want real people with their real lives and real problems amidst the hustle and bustle of the holidays.
What Didn’t Work For Me:
The 3rd Act Break Up—This was one that felt like a stretch for me. It surprised me and didn’t feel strong enough.
Character Authenticity: 4/5 Spice Rating: 1/5 Overall Rating: 4/5
