Wildwood #3

The Art of Avoiding Your Soulmate

Rate this book
3 hours and 47 minutes

I accidentally slept with my fated mate… and now, he wants to make it permanent.

It doesn't help that I may or may not be growing his baby as we speak.

Avoiding him seems like a waste of effort, considering he won't take no for an answer.

So I've settled for trying my best not to let him know about the possibility of a pregnancy.

If I can't avoid telling him, he's going to hold on to me even tighter, and let's be honest…

I'm probably going to fall in love with him.

This is a steamy, fun, standalone novella with a happily ever after!

Too much whining and not enough spice. I had certain expectations when it came to the level of spice this book would have based on the other two previous books and the fact that this is a fated mates series. I was let down. Though Bauther is my favorite MMC that this series has featured so far, so it at least had that going for it. He's so attentive to what Sienna might want or need, and even though he should have been honest, the lengths he goes to to continually ensure that she's comfortable how she needs to be is something all men should aspire to.
Which leads me to my main frustration ... WHY IN THE HELL WOULDN'T YOU WANT A FATED MATE?? Someone who is biologically designed to take care of you, make sure you have all your hearts desires, focus on your pleasure and not their own? What the fuck is Sienna (and her friends for that matter too) smoking that she is actively trying to AVOID A MATE??!!!! I get that they all have some kind of sordid past with some trauma .. but wouldn't that lead to them wanting someone to make them feel safe and loved instead of avoiding it? It was irritating in the first book and the fucking irritation continued throughout all three books. Out here struggling for my life with a human man and they're all bitching about being "stuck with" supernatural, giant dicked up, caring, hot as fuck SHIFTERS!! Make it make sense.

One part of this book that I'm absolutely in love with is how Bauther gets Sienna to talk about hard topics. Using strip poker as a method to get to know one another and answering a "tough topic" when you lose? Genius! See??! He's fucking perfect for her and perfect in general and she wanted to avoid that? I get that she has a right to be mad about him keeping the fact that he knew they were mates from her. But given her very vocal stance on fated mates, I would have kept that shit from her too. And it was only 2 days. Jesus Christ. Give the man a break. But I also love that he gave her the space that she was requesting ... even though it was so hard for him to do.

Overall, it was a very frustrating book and series, but I kept reading on because I'm a sucker for a shifter book and I was hoping for loads more smut. It wasn't the worst way I've spent my time, so take that as you will.

I wish I never read these books- just not my style. Not enough action or tension or magic. Too much I had to skip- just not for me.

I don’t know why I do this to myself 🤦🏻‍♀️
When I read her first book I liked it, even when it has so much flaws. Then I read another and another book by her and I found out that every FMC and MMC has the same personality. Also the plot is so similar that it looks like the author doesn’t bother write a new book and just change a few things.
But yeah, I’m still reading these because it’s kinda like guilty pleasure for me 😬😮‍💨😂

Sin duda, ¡este fue mi favorito! 4/5⭐️

Sienna y Bauther eran especiales.

3/5 stars, listened as an audiobook. Pretty quick, definitely moved fast compared to the prior two. Not a huge fan of the instant pregnancy trope but overall enjoyed this as a finale to this trio of books.

I devoured this series in two days. This has to be the absolute sweetest series I’ve read in a long time. They’re all nice and short but that doesn’t affect the story at all. There are no high stakes in these book. Only love and seeing 3 couples get to come together and find happiness after all the waiting the MMC’s have to endure and the trauma of the FMC’s upbringings. I highly recommend this series, especially if you just need to read some sexy love stories!

Finally, it's Sienna's and Bauther's (aka Beckett's) turn to find love in the Wildwood. I've been very curious about this couple since the first book and now it's here.

I liked Sienna even if she was a bit of a pushover. She's sweet but her logic made even less sense than Love's and Tori's did, the MFCs from the previous books. Tori has somehow found a way to annoy me even when she's not the lead but at least she had Sienna's back.

Beckett was a sneaky fudger but I liked him. I enjoyed finally getting to know the pack's beta. He's kind, had a softer touch (at least when it comes to Sienna), and was patient, I liked that for her. He was very thoughtful about who she was as a person and took the risk to woo her in a way that wouldn't necessarily go over well.

This book has all the stuff I usually love about the series, appearances from the previous MCs, the hilarious group chat, and spunky women and their determined mates. There's very low angst and HEAs all around, it's an easy read that I sat back and enjoyed for a little while.

That's it for the Wildwood series, The Art of Avoiding Your Soulmate was a quick and fun read, I enjoyed seeing Sienna and Beckett make their way towards their HEA. I love this universe and I'm very excited for the things Lola has planned next.

This was my favorite of the series. While the world building still isn't my favorite, the hero was the sweetest and tried so hard. He f'ed up by having sex with her while keeping it a secret they were mates, but I loved how much he tried so hard to give her space and care. His way of having serious conversations was also super cute.

At the end, both of them are unequivocally in love with each other and we see them years later in their happily ever after.

The world building doesn't make sense. If you have sex without protection with your "mate", you're almost 100% guaranteed to get pregnant. Uh, that's not the way the world works, author. Even in a fantasy, it wouldn't make sense that she's fertile 100% of the time.

Other things in the world building that make no sense include:

1. You cannot resist your mate. Once you know who they are, you're done for. It's not my favorite trope. I like some agency in my romance.

2. The blood wolves were created as renewable food sources for vampires. But... they themselves need to drink blood. It makes no sense. The vampires could have just made werewolves and had a better outcome.

Girl. He knew you were his mate. He knew there was basically a 100% chance of you getting pregnant from sex. He didn't tell you were his mate, promised you casual sex, which was a lie, and then had unprotected sex with you. Girl got baby-trapped. And never got properly mad about it.
I just can't get over that. Pretty sure it's a form of assault to lie about birth control.

I know I read book 3 without reading books 1 and 2. But these are standalone books about 3 werewolf vampires and their story in meeting their fated mates.

Ever wondered what happened to the ones saved from being kept as slaves and freed during the epic battle? Well, I think this is the aftermath for those slaves. Tory, Love and Sienna. They were made to be blood bags for the vampire clan they were slaves to. I read Sienna's story and it was entertaining. It was one of those, I don't want that HEA fated mate, not after the trauma I've been through, then the chase from Bauther, the fated mate, who makes an idiot move, but is soooo sweet!!! Oh, and I love the lose the "strip or talk" poker game he came up with.

It's a character-driven, straightforward story. Mentions of war, but it's all about the couple and how they end up together. There is spice, open door hot smex. Lucky was all I kept thinking 😒 I am jealous and I have no regrets.
The book is an easy read, something for In-between binges or during a series of easy book marathons to keep you going when you can't take too much from the book world.

For me it's an okay read, compared to similar fated mate series it's not bad, but also not a must-read. It can be on the TBR list without missing out. But if you need a credit to read it, then wait for when it's free

Bauther x Sienna

Sienna is the most reserved of the three Blood Wolves. As her best friend, she doesn't want a mate.
One night at the bar with the pack's women, Bauther makes his move and invites Sienna to have a drink with him.
She is so reserved that she dreads the conversation will make her anxious, but, to her surprise, it doesn't.
He invites her to his house, and she accidentally sleeps with him.
Bauther wasn't sure Sienna was his mate because of all the perfume and lotion she used to cover up her scent. Now that he knows Sienna is his mate, he won't let her go and will do everything in his power to keep her.

It's a funny, steamy, and cozy story with a minimal plot.
Even though the world-building is weak, I had fun and enjoyed it because I needed something quick and easy to read.
There's nothing too fancy: minimal plot, little mystery, spice, and some action that gets resolved quickly.
It's not for those who are searching for a heavy plot or an action-packed story.

This story wastes no time in getting to the heart of the matter – a charming tale of two characters who fit together like puzzle pieces. While I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline, I couldn't help but wish for a bit more depth and exploration.

Lola Glass once again proves her mastery in crafting captivating paranormal romances that leave readers eagerly turning the pages. Despite its brevity, the book maintains a brisk pace and hits all the right notes, making it a delightful addition to the series.

My only gripe? I yearn for more of Glass's enchanting narratives, as they never fail to entertain and leave me craving for further adventures. With the mention of Scale Ridge dragons, I am already eagerly anticipating the next journey into this captivating world.

Sienna and Bauther's story is a satisfying conclusion to the Wildwood trilogy, offering readers an easy yet gratifying read that leaves a sweet aftertaste lingering long after the final page is turned.

My favorite of all three of the Wildwood series of books. Lola Glass really did save the best for last with this one.

Like her two best friends Sienna doesn't want to have a mate. Instead she has a cat and makes cookies, though she isn't happy with the life she has.

This one starts out like the first, in a bar. Sienna is out with some woman from the pack, apparently out to meet some Alpha that Madd and Vex had set up for. At this point they firmly believe that the only way to one hundred percent protect Sienna is to find a mate. So, they essentially start parading men in front of her. Which is hilarious, because like Tori she covers up her scent beneath perfume and lotion.

Beckett Baulder is the Beta for the Wildwood pack, and has been following Sienna around for weeks. He began to suspect that she was his mate, but he wasn't completely sure until she comes out of the bathroom at the bar. Sienna had washed her hands, leaving her hands free to give off Sienna's regular scent.

Beck charms Sienna into coming back to his house, and they have a beautiful date night. Legit complete with him taking her home. Beckett has to be the strongest out of all the Wildwood books because he manages to restrain his wolf and urges for far longer than the others.

The next day comes around and despite not wanting to have a mate she ends up feeling giddy for her hook up with Beck. Sienna works through her day, with Beck bringing her a snack and lunch that day. They have another date that night, and of course have sex. Not a shocker really, because the tension between these two could be cut with a plastic butter knife.

When Sienna returns home that night, she ends up talking with her friends. Realizing that they didn't use any protection and she wasn't on any form of birth control. Of course because Love can't really keep anything to herself for too long, tells Sienna to go and find a bag with Becketts blood in it and then call her back. Sienna does this, and ask she watches the blood drain down the sink she comes to the answer she didn't want to. Beck was her fated mate, and hadn't told her. Love had also kept the news from her.

In a flurry of anger, frustration, and fear Sienna tells Love she is leaving their pack for Tori's, and then hangs up on her friend. She leaves the house flipping off the werewolf who happened to be outside guarding her. I surprisingly agreed with how she dealt with this. She was hurt, and went somewhere she felt she would be safe.
It didn't last long though. Beck found her with Tori and Vex on the outskirts of Wildwood. In Alpha fashion Beck throws Sienna over his shoulder and takes her back to his house. They talk which results in a phone call to Madd about Sienna wanting to meet the next guy they had lined up for her. In a moment of chicken, neither couple broke, so Sienna ended up making plans for a date she didn't want.
Angry and tired she says she is going to bed. Closes the door to the master bedroom and locks it leaving Beck to sleep in the guest room. Thing is though he doesn't. Instead he curled up on the floor in front of the door and spent the entire night sleeping there. As close to her as she would allow him to be. I appreciate why Sienna did this, and respect her for not giving into her desires. Though I didn't like the date thing.

The next day she tries to act like she is angrier then she actually is. A part of Sienna understands that Beck didn't tell her because he feared she would run away. She knew she would run away, it had been the plan she had from the beginning.
He brings her lunch anyways and they have a moment in the breakroom that Sienna cuts off abruptly.
The day goes on, and she makes it home to get ready. With Beck on her heels. He lets her know that he will be coming on their date together, and invited another woman from the pack to join them. Sienna's wolf doesn't like this and she growls...loudly. Beck lets her know that he already told her date that she was mated to him and that Beck had invited the other woman for Ox and not him. Sienna is a little embarrassed by her reaction.
The two end up making a bargain to stay in. Beck cooks, and they play some "strip poker" in order to talk out some difficult things. Instead of stripping closes the person who wins gets to pick the topic they talk about. Beck had a list made for them to talk things through.
Honestly this was freaking adorable. A man who wants to take care of the hard things first before he gets to enjoy the rest is a treasure, and deserves to be taken off the market. End of story.

At this point Sienna is waiting for her appointment with the packs OBGYN to see if she is pregnant, but was told it would take a few weeks. The couple end up going through this time with Sienna slowly melting to Beck, and Beck giving Sienna the distance she has asked for. The only compromise she makes in this time is that he can come and sleep in the same room, but he has to use a different bed. Still determined to keep her distance from him until she knows whether she is going to have a baby or not. Can't blame her here either, the worry can be freaking killer.

Planning with Tori and Love, she ends up sneaking away from work for her appointment. Leaving Beck at the bakery she worked at. Sienna went on her own, but while she waited for the results Baulder finally caught on that she was no longer there.
Tired of fighting her need to have him close, she lets Beck know where she is. When he shows up, Sienna tells him everything. Admitting in no uncertain terms that she was going to have his child and raise it with or without him. Back assures her that he is going to be the best Dad ever, and that he will protect them both.

They go home and play more "Strip poker" and talk out the issues they have on the table. Its a long conversation, but I think some of my favorite in this serious. Talking straight through the list until they end up in bed together. Kissing, touching, and love making. This is where Sienna finally gives in and drinks Becks blood. Only helps solidify their relationship. Falling asleep in each others arms.

Love and Tori storm the house in the morning, but its defused when Sienna tells them all is well. That is going to have a baby. Love invites everyone to dinner after Beck and Sienna have had a few days to sort through there beginning mate bond lust issues. lol They seal the bond together after the BBQ and all seems right in the world.

The book ends with an epilogue from Beck's perspective. He is overjoyed to have a three year old son and another child on the way. Its a beautiful, blissful end that I can imagine everyone wants to experience some day.

I loved this. Hands down the best book in the series...Thank you Lola, for sharing this story with us. The world is better for it.

64% read. She's a doormat. He's a manipulative "nice guy". So far all he has going for him is that he "could be worse".

74% I hate this book. Lack of informed consent, followed by justification and playing the victim. It's SO manipulative and abusive.

In the last book it was brought up that "he doesn't care about HER. He would have the same level of interest for whoever fate chose as his mate". Still true in this couple. She grew up with no choices, and here's another person stronger than her taking away her choices.

The whole "my wolf won't let me" is feeling "boys will be boys". How can a werewolf be considered strong and alpha if he had no self control. That's weak.

100% Finished. Can I give negative stars? She's a nonentity, completely lacking in personality and backbone. Whatever comes her way, she'll just roll over and accept it. It's all about him, his wants, and however he acts is just fine as long as, in the end, his manipulation works.

I don't get it.

Gleeful Goblin Review: So, I have loved all the books in this series this far and I'm not surprised to love this one. BUT HOLY COW, I AM OBSESSED WITH BECK. His personality is this fine balance between the possessive growly alpha type vibes but balanced with this thoughtful, logical, and considerate aspect that makes him perfect for Sienna who struggles so very much with good boundaries for herself. As someone who also struggles with people pleasing as a result of trauma I connected with that dynamic deeply and instantly. A great example of Beck's vibe and how that interacts with Sienna in terms of reassurance and open communication is this scene that's happening after Sienna has texted Beck asking out of the blue if he's intimate with anyone else in the pack: "I started typing an answer, but couldn’t come up with anything that didn’t make me sound slightly insane. So, I finally just exited the text thread. Of course, my phone rang almost as soon as I did so. My stomach clenched, but I had to answer. He knew I was on my phone. “Hello?” I said, trying to sound like my usual self. “Hey.” His voice made goosebumps break out on my arms. And it brought my mind back to the night before. My face flushed, and I couldn’t help but remember him telling me how good I tasted. “Why did you ask if I was sleeping with anyone else in the pack?” His question was direct. Too direct to dance around it. I grimaced. “There’s been a lot of messages about you in the women’s group chat after last night. I started thinking about it and just got stuck in my head I guess. When I tried to explain myself, I realized how ridiculous I sounded.” “Werewolves are possessive, Sienna. That’s nature. It’s not ridiculous. If I found out you were fúckíng another guy in the pack after last night, I would probably kíll the bástárd.” My shoulders eased. “I shouldn’t be possessive, though. We didn’t talk about being exclusive or anything.” “We made plans for tonight. I was going to make plans for tomorrow after tonight, too, so it’s a hell of a lot more than one night. I’m yours for the foreseeable future, alright? And if we’re sleeping together, it’s exclusive.” His words relaxed me, though my face was still warm. “Alright.” “Ignore what the women in the pack say. They can talk as much shít as they want.” “They’re not talking shít. They’re… I don’t know. In love with you.” He chuckled. “They barely know me, Sienna. I’m just the beta to them. I’ve never had sèx with someone in the pack before you. Remember that when they get too loud.” I nodded, though he couldn’t see me. “Alright.” “I’ll see you at 3:30?” he asked. “Yep. 3:30.” I ran my fingers through my tangled ponytail. I’d slept in too late to fix it, so it didn’t look great. “Unless… have you had lunch yet?” I was out of it after not sleeping much, so I had to glance at the clock. “No. Not for another hour.” “I can bring you something to eat, if you don’t have plans with your friends.” My face heated further. I didn’t have plans, but… Well, if I accepted, it would bring us closer together. And I didn’t want a mate, or a committed relationship. But he wasn’t my mate. And we couldn’t commit to each other, given that we weren’t mates. So… “Lunch would be nice.” “I’ll pick something up on the way.” “Thank you.” I bit my lip. “I need to get back to work.” “Alright. I’ll see you soon.” “Bye.” I hung up, biting my lip harder as I stared at my phone."

I've always loved the Hurt/Comfort trope but this one stands out in the absolute best way and I burned through this book in spite of not being in the best place right now personally. I loved reading this book and I appreciated being reminded of softness and care like this book shows. 5/5 Stars.

Third & Final story of the Wildwood Series. THIS!! THIS!!! This one was full of angst, tension, & push/pull. The drama was excellent.

Sienna is such a lovely blood wolf!! She's scared. She's working on figuring out who she is AWAY from the vampire clan that made her. She is trying to gain her own independence. She made choices to benefit her. She was such a strong character for being the last survivor of the clan.

Beck is a great beta. His patience & kindness are my favorite things about him. He respected Si's boundaries. I wish he was most up front, but then we wouldn't have had the main point of conflict. I loved that he dragged a 2nd bed into his master so he could sleep near her while not being in the same bed.

Si was mad at Beck for not disclosing their mate status before they slept together. I kind of understand. She wouldn't have slept with him if she knew. She hasn't wanted to be someone's mate yet. She is still finding herself. Figuring out who she is. Finding out what she likes about HERSELF without having to be a part of a couple.

The way the pregnancy was handled was done well. She didn't tell Beck because she wanted to be sure first. It's a valid reason. The fact that Beck didn't even bat an eye or raise his voice over it was exactly what I wanted from him. I know he had a reason to be frustrated, but Si needed that time.

The poker / truths game was fun. It was a great way for them to get to know one another. It also helped Si get to know herself a bit, too. They asked questions that make one think, and Si probably hadn't even thought of them before.

I really enjoyed this conclusion. Sienna put her foot down & drew very solid lines in the sand. She stuck to her guns, she enforced her boundaries, and she stood her ground. She had her own dreams and aspirations. She didn't let Beck dictate her life.

DNF 23%. I really don't know why I do this sometimes. Binge reading Lola Glass books is never a good idea. I really need to work on spacing them out. I just binged the her Mated to the King series and then moved straight to this one without a break in between and I think that was a mistake.I liked most of the books in the Mated to the King series particularly the 5th one. I felt like there was more variety with characters and plot elements in that series than this one.

The first and second book in this series were very very similar. This one looked to be much of the same except with a surprise pregnancy. Honestly it was the female leads in this series that didn't work for me. The guys were pretty generic but a loving nice generic that worked for me. All 3 female leads are hardcore against having a mate which maybe made sense for Love because of fear of the unknown but for Tori and Sienna it really didn't make any sense for them to try and fight it so hard. The simple fact that finding their fated mate made it nearly impossible for them to be taken by vampires seems like it would be a pretty good reason to accept a fated mate who essentially only wants to take care of you. Frankly there was also a lot of smut and it was not balanced out enough with plot to keep the books as interesting as they could be.

While this series didn't really work for me I am definitely going to keep reading Lola Glass books. They really are excellent for when I am stressed and just need a mindless HEA to unwind with.

Short & Sweet!

H: Beckett Bauther (Madd's Beta- Wolf)
h: Sienna (Blood Wolf-vampire/wolf
Just like the author stated-this is a short book but in my opinion is very sweet which is a perfect ending for this trio/series.
We have Beckett who has felt that Sienna was his mate for a few months but was never too sure. Sienna was rescued by Tori & her mate Vex (one of her best friends Book2 and Love from Book1). Sienna has always been the shy one, she would very rarely say "no" out of fear of letting other people down. She would feel some type of connection with Beckett but didn't think anything of it since there would be mates he would be all over her (So she thought). One night on the bar Beckett was there and once Sienna went to the bathroom and washed her hands, Beckett asked her out and by smelling her hands realized that she was his mate. He really tries his best not to show his true feelings and first wants Sienna to fall in love with him 1st before he tells her that they are mates. Things don't quite work the same way since her IUD was removed and they had unprotected sex there was apprx 90% chance that she was pregnant and that only happens when they are mates. That's how Sienna finds out that she and Beckett are mates. Again this story is short and straight to the point-no outside issues and they are really cute together. I really liked the story- I do wish it was a little bit longer though.
