About the author

Captain Kevin Miller, a 24-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, is a former tactical naval aviator and has flown the A-7E Corsair II and FA-18 Hornet operationally. He commanded a carrier-based strike-fighter squadron, and, during his career, logged over 1,000 carrier-arrested landings, made possible as he served alongside outstanding men and women as part of a winning team. Captain Miller lives and writes in Pensacola, Florida.

His first novel, RAVEN ONE, was published in June 2014 and peaked at #29 in Amazon's sales ranking. The sequel, DECLARED HOSTILE, was published in August, 2016. HIGH DESERT REFLECTIONS is an autobiographical short story of his flying experiences in the American mountain west. FIGHT FIGHT was published in 2018 followed by HIGH END in 2024 to complete the R1 series, In June 2020, his long-awaited Battle of Midway historical fiction novel, THE SILVER WATERFALL, was published going on to win five writing awards. The fourth book in the series, we once again follow Jim "Flip" Wilson - now an Admiral - as he commands a Carrier Strike Group in the North Atlantic.

This book followed in a similar format as the previous installments - not a bad thing, quite the contrary, I think the way it builds tension slowly at the beginning until an ultimate crescendo is very well done throughout the series. There were many moments in this book that made me have physical reactions and felt like I was an awkward bystander in the same room as Flip during some scenes.

The technical components to the book are as brilliant as ever and stays true to form like the previous books. They aren't over the top but provide enough information to put us in the cockpit, the bridge, or any other location.

This has become one of my favorite series and has been a catalyst for bringing me back to reading in general. I've read Raven One three times now and have even played through the campaigns Kevin Miller has collaborated on with Baltic Dragon for DCS. Looking forward to reading Kevin's other books as well. Definitely give this series a read if you haven't though!

Well Done , Hozer!

I’ve followed Capt. Kevin (Hozer) Miller, USN ret., since he retired from active duty. HIGH END is his most recent addition to the Raven One series and presumably the last of the series. Having read them all in sequence, I found this 4th book nicely ties up loose ends while continuing to educate, thrill, and keep the action coming. Of his many talents, Capt. Miller is a smooth and elegant writer, developing his characters with empathy for their circumstances and foibles.
If you love aviation and appreciate the unique carrier based version, you will enjoy and appreciate these novels.

An Authentic Military Thriller Series That Stays With You

Kevin Miller has accomplished something rare with the Raven One series—he combines authentic naval aviation, compelling characters, and edge-of-your-seat storytelling into one outstanding package. High End is a fitting conclusion to a series that never loses momentum.

As a retired U.S. Navy officer (Supply Corps) who served aboard USS Nimitz during the era of F/A-18 Hornet operations, I was especially impressed by the authenticity. The flight operations, squadron culture, leadership, and decision-making all ring true. It was also a pleasant surprise to see one of the naval aviators acknowledged in the book—someone I had the privilege of serving with. That personal connection only reinforced how grounded in real experience these novels are.

What impressed me most, however, wasn’t just the realism—it was the people. The camaraderie, sacrifice, humor, and human side of military service make these characters feel like shipmates rather than fictional creations.

I’ve read countless military thrillers over the years, and it’s rare that I find myself thinking about the story and its characters after I’ve put the book down. With the Raven One series, I did. I found myself reflecting on the characters, their decisions, and wondering what came next long after I had finished reading for the day. That’s the hallmark of exceptional storytelling.

Whether you’re a military/Naval aviation enthusiast or simply enjoy outstanding thrillers, the Raven One series belongs on your reading list. Kevin Miller has created one of the finest modern military fiction series available today. Five stars without hesitation. I only hope this isn’t the last mission for these characters.

Every parent of a high school or college-age youngster who might be searching for an exciting career path to follow should give their son or daughter a copy of Kevin Miller’s High End. It is the fourth book of the Raven One series, and by far the most compelling and exciting installment to date. And just like his other books, it presents an amazing vista into one of the most fascinating careers on earth. It is impossible to read this book without being inspired to follow a career as a Navy aircraft pilot. Captain Miller doesn’t show his readers what Navy carrier pilots experience every day, he puts his readers inside the cockpit so they can experience it themselves. If you enjoy heart-pounding highly realistic aviation thrillers, this book will more than satisfy you — written by a guy who lived the experiences first hand, and is a master at recreating them on the written page. Highly recommended.

I love the Raven One series which centers around my favorite reading topic - Naval aviators and aircraft carriers. Book #4, High End, was terrific. We are in a Naval war with Russia (although some other countries are part of the story too). Nuclear devices become involved. But the main part of the story that I loved involved the admirals. Our hero, Flip Wilson, is an admiral aboard the aircraft carrier in this story. But he reports to a higher admiral who then reports to an even higher admiral. While Flip Wilson's immediate admiral boss gets along with Flip fine, the highest ranking admiral doesn't agree with Flip's decisions. Conflicts abound between Flip and the highest admiral. Between conflicting admirals and the actual conflict between the USA and Russia, this story was very exciting and enjoyable for me.

If anyone is looking for an exciting fiction book to read this summer, take a look at "High End" by Kevin Miller.
"High End" is timely.....it deals with Ukraine/Russia & Putin's use of Nuclear weapon threats. What could go wrong?
As a former Naval Aviator (F/A-18s) I can attest to the fact that Kevin describes Carrier Aviation, 'flying around the boat', it to a T! It will get your heart racing, as will the tactical game of chess that goes on between adversaries.
While "High End" is the fourth book in a series, it stands alone. You do not have to of read the first three to understand/follow this one (though the other three are great as well!!!).
If you prefer Historical Fiction, Kevin wrote "The Silver Waterfall", which covers the WW2 Battle of Midway.

High end is another (possible the last part, but wishfully not!) amazing aviation thriller of the raven series by Capt miller. Expect lots of fast paced action, knife cutting pressure build up and a novel that will turn your eyes bloodshot from the reading eagerness to see whats next! The main protaginist faces new and unique challenges and the reader becomes a part of an amazing cinematic style adventure that unfolds from page to page. All well organized and well executed in a gripping novel that will satisfy both naval aviation fans as also as ones that seek for a great action novel. All in all after having read all of Capt Millers books, i am greatful i discovered the Flip Wilson series and strongly recommend it to anyone. Give those books a try. You are up for a reading treat!

I have read all of the Raven/ Jim "Flip" Wilson books by Kevin Miller and have enjoyed them all. This one took me back to the weekend that I read Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy. There are books that are engaging and there are literally the can't-put-it-down kind. High-End is definitely in the latter group. Good characters that build well on the previous books. Even though there is-in-the-cockpit action, it's really about what is going on at the leadership level. From a Russian Destroyer Kapitan to 1, 2, and 4 star Navy admirals flexing their muscles. All frighteningly plausible in our current global climate.

The plot was very interesting and kept me engaged throughout the book. The biggest problem I had was that I did not understand the military aspect of it. All of the acronyms used for different people, what ranks were above other ranks, who was in charge, what countries were being talked about. I started out googling the meaning of all of them, but I just couldn't keep them all in my brain. Someone who loves the military and has knowledge of it would most likely enjoy this book immensely.

A Great Read - Highly Recommended!

Kevin Miller really delivers in his latest book, High End.

All the modern techno-gadgets of modern warfare, but with the looming uncertainty of WW2 carrier battles. Fast paced and action packed, this book really delivers.

If you are into reading great fiction about geopolitics, naval or air warfare, I think you should pick this one up.

another thrilling plausible naval aviation adventure

Happy that the Flip Wilson series got a fourth book. This one was very hard to put down, as you felt you were on the USS Valley Forge ready to kick Ruzzian azz. You’ll feel like you’re either in the cockpit or in the Russian destroyer’s bridge or on Flip Wilson’s staff.

I have enjoyed all of Kevin Miller's books! I love how he puts you in the cockpit and makes you feel as though you are a part of the action. I question some of the political and social reactions that are displayed in the book, but I thought that High End was thrilling and it shows how important and strategic the Arctic Circle is to the defense of the United States and NATO.
