Off Script: An unscripted love that steals the show

Rate this book

The Hollywood actor...
With his star on the rise, Ben Sutton's life revolves around movie scripts and shooting schedules, not roses and romance. Gun-shy after his last relationship imploded, Ben stopped looking for a woman to be his real-life leading lady, but one evening, fate intervenes. And a misdialed phone number becomes the best mistake Ben’s ever made.

...and the southern girl who steals his heart.
On the other end of the phone line is sweet and sassy Carlisle Matthews. Fresh out of college and fresh off of a series of bitter heartbreaks, Carlisle is looking for a fresh start. With little more than her best friend, a car she can’t afford to drive, and the naïve optimism that can only come from youth, Carlisle puts her small town in the rearview mirror in favor of the glitz and glamour of LA.

When Ben and Carlisle's different worlds collide, an undeniable connection forms, taking them by surprise. Both hurting from past wrongs, they turn to each other to heal hearts they didn't break, and soon late-night phone calls, flurries of text messages, and secret dates lead to love.

But as Ben’s promotional tour for his latest blockbuster looms closer, the movie studio makes a stunning demand--one which threatens his relationship with Carlisle. Can Ben and Carlisle navigate the complexities of a Hollywood romance or will living in the harsh glare of the media’s spotlight cause their love to burn out?

Thanks to Voracious Readers for proving me a free copy of this book for my honest review. Where oh where to begin with this book. First things first I'm giving it 3 stars instead of 4 for various reasons. I did enjoy reading this book but there were a lot of things that I didn't like. The premise of the story is what originally captured my attention. Ben and Carlisle and their meet cute was really eye catching and wanting me to read more. As I continued reading though some things took me out of enjoying the book. One of them being how after finishing it, it feels that the author was trying to convey that all females are manipulative or gullible. There was almost too much conflict between both MC's which took away from the natural flow of the book making me want to stop reading but I persisted. I also did not enjoy how from the middle to the end of the book Carlisle is written as whiny, insecure, and anxious. Always believing the worse but when Ben shows up she easily forgives him and all is well. The flow between chapters felt weird at times as instead of continuing there was a weird jump into something else and we as readers are having to pick up the missing pieces. The ending was just TERRIBLE and rushed and that the author just wanted to get through it and added weird drama but trying to tie up loose ends but I just couldn't stand it. Overall the book was okay at best and could have been better but so many things took away from me enjoying it.

Had to hop on to book 1 of Erin Olivier's series Love in the Limelight. I got to say, I loved this romance book.

For a second, it had me crying towards the end. I was like NOOOOOOOOO, and then everything worked out and I was crying haply tears and smiling so hard.

I did relate to Carlisle a lot when it comes to the family dynamic that was shown. Although I am closer to my dad than Carlisle was, I can feel us starting to slowly grow apart. So in that, I really connected with her. But Harper is an amazing friend to Carlisle 🥰. Get you a friend like Harper that will be there for when it's rough.

And Brent Benjamin. You were put in a position that, at the time, was so hard for you to pick sides. But it wasn't entirely your fault. You had a management that was not on your side and who were only there for the big bucks in the end. Unfortunately, I feel that is something that does occur in today's Hollywood. The exploitation of the industry will unfortunately always be there. But, you worked it out in the end. And now you're happier than ever and all of us readers couldn't be more happier for you and Carlisle.

I loved this story! It was refreshing to have a love story start in a way I hadn't read before, with a dial of the wrong number. It goes to show that something as insignificant as a wrong number can change the course of lives. It had been a while since I cried while reading but this gave me the entire range of extreme emotions and I loved every second of it. Carlisle and Ben's story was fun with their banter as strangers, friends, and eventually lovers and the hardships they each go through really pull at your heart strings. Great work by Erin!

The premise of this story was good. I had higher hopes for the story than what I felt it delivered. It felt at times that it was too long. It was sweet to see their friendship start off as something so innocent but the storyline just fell a little flat for me. I did read through it all and it was enjoyable in a lot of parts, but I could tell what was going to happen throughout the story.

Overall, it's not a bad read, it's just not one I might even recall in a few weeks.
