This was a cute read. Gracie, our titular character, is a widow and mom of two. She writes an online essay about her dearly departed and her grief over losing him. Lo and behold, it goes viral and ends up getting her a book deal. While her kids are away for the summer, she decides to go to the mountains to write, and that's where she meets Josh, the contractor who is renovating her mountain house. Gracie has to ask herself if she is ready for a second chance at love and willing to risk her heart.

I found the character of Gracie a little unrealistic. She has a lot on her plate, and less than a year after her husband dies, she is considering a new romance? I find it hard to believe that someone who is hurting as much as she is, and has two kids, no less, would walk into this so easily. I also wish there were more of the kids in the story. They're only there in the beginning and a little at the end. I think it would have added a little more dimension to the plot. A lot of the book ended up being just a little too perfect for me; I like angst and drama, and this was just a little too idyllic. Some inconsistencies in the story threw me off, but maybe that's because it's an ARC. For example, the husband is mentioned as the baby of the family, but he is also mentioned elsewhere as the firstborn. I will admit there is an audience for this type of book; I am just not one of them. Not bad for a debut, though.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

I don't know what the heck is wrong with me lately, but nothing has hit the mark recently. Is this a book funk? Is it my mood? Am I getting grumpy in my old age? (59 next week!) Am I making poor choices on NetGalley? Let me know what you think or if this has happened to you.

This book presents a heartfelt and beautifully layered story that captures the messy, unpredictable journey of grief, healing, and rediscovering love when you least expect it. This novel isn’t just about romance—it’s about rebuilding a life that’s been shattered and learning to embrace the unexpected turns along the way.

Gracie Harris is a character that feels wonderfully real—flawed, funny, and brimming with resilience even when she doesn’t see it in herself. After the loss of her husband, her raw, emotional essay unexpectedly catapults her into the public eye, turning her grief into a career she never saw coming. With a book deadline looming and her children away at camp, she retreats to the run-down mountain house she and her late husband once dreamed of fixing up. Enter Josh—the charming and patient contractor who not only helps renovate the house but also begins to break down the walls Gracie has built around her heart.

The emotional weight of this story is handled with grace, balancing heartbreak with hope, humor with sorrow. The chemistry between Gracie and Josh is warm and organic, though the real star of the novel is Gracie’s personal transformation. While some aspects, like her children’s seamless acceptance of change, felt a bit too smooth, the book still resonates with authenticity when it comes to navigating loss, unexpected fame, and the complexity of moving forward.

Kate Hash’s writing shines with depth and tenderness, making this an engaging and uplifting read. If you enjoy emotionally rich stories with well-developed characters and a second-chance-at-life arc, this one is worth picking up. 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Dutton for the ARC!

I absolutely love stories centered around grief, so I’m really bummed this didn’t work for me. Gracie Harris lands in the spotlight after a viral essay about her late husband earns her a book deal. Seeking solitude in the remote mountain house she and her husband purchased before his passing, she meets Josh, the charming contractor helping her renovate.

This story had a lot to say about grief, therapy, and healing. There were definitely some beautiful, quotable lines that clearly came from a thoughtful place. I loved what this story was trying to do, and I think a lot of readers will connect with it, but the execution just didn’t work for me. Gracie’s journey through grief felt a bit idyllic. Everything developed so perfectly—too perfectly.

The dialogue between Gracie and Josh seemed stilted and kind of interview-like. To be fair, that’s partly because Josh is helping her prep for interviews—but still, I struggled to feel any real emotional connection between them. And while I know grief looks different for everyone, Gracie’s openness to start dating so soon after her loss felt somewhat inconsistent with her emotions.

There just wasn't enough conflict. No real tension. Not even with her kids. Their quick acceptance of everything felt too easy, too convenient. It all felt too good to be true. It lacked the heavy, complicated feelings I look for in stories like this. But if you’re ok with a more picture-perfect take on grief and healing, this could be a comforting and hopeful read.

(heat level: fade to black / very vague open-door)

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you to @prhaudio and @duttonbooks for the free audiobook!

What a fantastic debut from Katie Hash!! I loved it! This story is a more lighthearted approach to dealing with grief after the loss of a spouse. I loved the sweet budding romance in this one, a FMC in her early 40’s with kids, and the home renovation. The audio narration is done by Brittany Pressley and I really enjoyed it!

It was also so refreshing to see a traditionally published book with the spice level as fade to black!! 👏🏻👏🏻

If you are a fan of The Last Love Note and Nora Goes Off Script, then I would definitely give this one a try!

5!! I don’t even know where to begin to explain how much I love this book. Gracie Harris, a single mother of two, lost her husband, Ben, over a year ago. Now, with summer here, her children are away at camp, she’s working on her memoir, and a charming contractor named Josh is renovating her home. This is a story of grief, love, and learning how to move forward in life.

First, let me acknowledge how beautifully written this book is. It strikes the perfect balance between romance and Gracie’s deeply personal journey through grief. It’s often tricky to craft a romance that doesn’t overshadow character development, but this book does it flawlessly. We see Gracie grow and heal as she falls in love with Josh. And Josh, wow! He never outshines Gracie but instead offers just the right amount of support. I also loved the word choice in this book, I can tell it was carefully picked. I am a firm believer that words matter, and here they are so intentional. A standout example is Gracie’s desire to “move forward” rather than “move past” or “get over” the loss of her husband. This distinction honors the Gracie who loved Ben while showing how the present-day Gracie has changed and continues to grow.

The romance? Absolutely breathtaking. From the moment they meet, it’s the quintessential “look of love” moment. Josh and Gracie had a connection like no other. It was palpable throughout the pages, much like the tension. A quiet yearning for one another that was shown through words and looks. What sets their relationship apart and makes it so special is how they first build a genuine friendship. They become each other’s safe place, someone they can trust completely. Honestly, it makes me go insane to think about how perfect they are for each other.

This book touched me deeply. Every part of it was emotional, and it’s been a while since I felt such a strong connection to a story. I loved every single page. I could gush about it for hours. By the third act, the tears were flowing, I was absolutely wrecked, but in the best way. I think some of those tears were from sheer disbelief at how beautifully everything wrapped up. I’ll end with my favorite quote: “...good people wait, and are worth waiting for.”

Take a chance on debut authors. Read this book—you won’t regret it!

Talk about a book with feels. Gracie Harris is navigating life a year after her husband, Ben, unexpectedly died. Between juggling her budding career as an author, her two adolescent kids, and attempting to grieve while moving forward, she has her hands full enough without the added stress of renovating a vacation home purchased shortly before Ben’s death. Enter Josh. Josh is on sabbatical and in need of a project to keep him busy, in this case fixing up the home Gracie owns in his small town.

This is a slow burn romance, but I’d argue it’s more a second act coming-of-(middle) age about Gracie growing into a new version of herself without the man she was with her whole adult life. I loved the strong, amazing support group she has in the form of friends, coworkers, and even her kids. I also enjoyed the respectfulness and cautious approach Josh took with her, becoming a great friend and letting Gracie set the pace.

This book is real and raw, and I’m unashamed to say I shed a few tears more than once as I followed along with Gracie’s journey.

I received an advanced copy through Netgalley in return for an honest review.

I enjoyed this one, after I pushed through the first half. First half just took a bit for me to truly get into. This story had such deep topics about grief and a life/dream/hopes lost after death of a spouse. It was truly touching, the last half and ending truly tugged at my heart strings. Beautifully written.

There were parts of this book that were really sweet, and yes, lines and scenes that made me cry, but I found so much of this book to be telling, not showing. For a book that centers around grief and loss, it felt very surface level and Hallmark movie to me

many thanks to @duttonbooks for the free copy even though ups ruined my package and the cover (have no fear y'all, they already have a new copy out in the mail for me)! also- much appreciation to my faves @prhaudio the audiobook was amazing!! @britpressley always brings characters to life-i truly felt gracie's grief, and later, her joy.

i really enjoyed this one! the grief felt honest, and the story was deeply emotional and hopeful. i was able to connect with gracie in many ways & i loved the personal growth in her. the chemistry between her and josh felt therapeutic-exactly what she needed in that season. their budding friendship was truly special—i loved the casual, genuine ways they got to know each other and how their fondness quietly grew. (it's funny, during the story, her kids are away at sleep-away camp and so was our oldest, so i thought that was fun!) i loved the small town vibes, the whole home renovation deets, the maturity of the characters, and the aspects of motherhood! there's honestly just so much to love about this one, idk how else to describe it other than it just felt real good!

🌶️- is there seks in the story? yes, but it's nothing overly descriptive if that helps! i wanna say it's more kinda fade to black, josh + grace do some grown folks business but i think the author did a great job keeping it cute for all types of readers!

@katehashwrites this was good!! i'm definitely excited for your next, no pressure!

5 stars!!

Note: NetGalley Advanced Reader Copy Review - Thank you to Dutton Imprint and Penguin Publishing

Follow Gracie Harris as she navigates her life a year after her husband’s sudden passing. What started as a cathartic release has inadvertently earned her the unofficial and unwanted title of the Queen of Grief when it turned into a gig with the New York Times and a in progress memoir. While working on herself and through her grief she decides to spend a summer at her summer home that badly needs repairs. Luckily her friendly realtor knows just the man to help.

Easily a 6 star read for me. I absolutely love the voice Kate Hash brought to Gracie and her ability to make you fall in love with her characters. Such a touching story and one of the most realistic depictions of a love story I’ve read. Nary a miscommunication trope in sight which truly makes my heart happy.

As special as this book was to read I would highlight in warning the amount of grief discussed. While it is handled impeccably well in my opinion, I do think for anyone in the thick of grief it is probably too much to read too soon.

Kate Hash will be on my must read list for her future novels.

Gracie, a recent widow and mother of two, who finds unexpected love after her essay about grief goes viral, landing her a book deal and a summer alone at a fixer-upper mountain house.

What a fantastic debut! Every time I picked this one up, I had such a great time. It excels as a women’s fiction read with a romantic subplot you have no choice to root for! It handles grief (a universally hard and complex feeling) in a way that is digestible and understanding. Gracie is a solid FMC that is funny and honest and true to scale. She stumbles and gets back up again in a way that is human and honest. Despite its heavy subject matter, it is light, fun, relatable, and a great beach read!

✨REVIEW: Gracie Harris is Under Construction by Kate Hash✨

🎧4⭐️

Can I be honest for a second? I really hate the cover of this book. It looks so juvenile. I never would have picked this up if I hadn’t seen so many rave reviews for it. I’m here to say that was I wrong to judge prematurely.

❤️Pick this up if you love:
-Romances with widows as main characters
-MCs in their 40s
-Handyman MMCs
-Small town vibes
-More depth than your typical romcom

🤷‍♀️Why not five stars?
The MMC, Josh, was basically perfect. I also thought it was convenient that her two kids were gone to camp for the entire summer. The ending wrapped up a little too easily, especially where the kids were concerned.

Finally, this is a personal preference, but I’m tired of books where “hookup culture” is accepted as the norm. I’m not oblivious to the fact that it is indeed the norm for a good chunk of the population, but it bugged me that Gracie mentioned church as part of her routine while also saying she has had a few casual hookups since the death of her husband.

🎧Brittany Pressley does a decent job with the audio narration.

🥰If you like Abby Jimenez’s novels, you should try this!

⚠️Profanity: 3/5 (Occasional use of profanity- a couple per chapter)
Sexual: 2.5/5 (fade to black/cracked door)

Other: Death of a spouse is referenced. Grief pertaining to this

❓Are you a fan of DIY/Home renovation shows? If so, what’s your favorite? I will watch just about anything on HGTV!

4/4.5 STARS

Such a beautiful and heartfelt book about grief and finding love again. This book pulled on my heartstrings and made me feel all the emotions. It is so poignantly written and you can’t help but fall in love with the two main characters.

Gracie Harris is a mom of two and a recent widow. Right before her husband passed they had purchased a summer home in a small town called Canopy that is near the sleep away camp both their children attend. Gracie decides to spend the summer at the unfinished house to write her memoir and oversee all renovations. Josh Anderson is the brother of Gracie’s real estate agent who happens to have time this summer to work on Gracie’s house after taking a sabbatical from his own construction company.

As Josh starts working at the house, he and Gracie develop an easygoing and comforting friendship. Gracie also finds comfort in the town of Canopy where she starts making friends with all the locals. Her writing is flowing, her social life has improved and her heart slowly begins to open up to the possibility of finding love again.

I loved the progression of Gracie’s character. She is a strong woman who has been through the unthinkable but shows courage, resilience and strength. Her journey is beautiful as she gathers the pieces of her broken heart and slowly puts them back together. And Josh made my heart swoon. He is perfection. Such a sweet story.

What a glorious, complex, heartwarming story. Gracie Harris is Under Construction is the definition of believing in a second chance for yourself after the loss of a partner. I’m not just referring to a second chance at romance, but also in personal will to live outside of her children.

In personal experience, grief can be a topic of conversation easily directed away from especially since it brings considering ones own mortality into question. This book does not shy away from the harsh realities and layers one faces while surviving the loss of a loved one.

Not only do you walk through the story of who Gracie was as she reflects upon the past year for the memoir she’s writing, but who she becomes during the time spent in small town Canopy. She comes to face that not only is she a mother, a daughter, a writer but also someone who doesn’t deserve to be alone forever. From starting small talk conversations with local business owners to building up the confidence to face big interview opportunities, we watch Gracie transform into someone she’s proud to be.

Speaking of small talk with local business owners, I absolutely loved the found family Gracie made along the way. Her support system after the loss of her husband was beautiful, but seeing her be a brave little introvert was just as precious. The dynamic between Gracie and Josh is so wholesome and tender. I loved seeing his patient love and how he continually respected her boundaries especially with the children.

I didn’t know what I was walking into reading this book, expecting a cute rom-com at best. This is so much more. I cried with Gracie more times than I can count. The grief she endured throughout this book is relatable, and it’s raw. I couldn’t help but feel this author put words to some of my own grief. I just absolutely loved the plot driven story here. The romance between Gracie + Josh is ADORABLE ok don’t let me skip over that one. Their banter and flirting is just top tier. I really enjoyed the slow burn here but just know it’s sloooow. The end game is worth it! Their story will stick with me for a while. These books remind you of why you read.

We meet Gracie Harris around a year after her husband has passed. She penned an essay in grief and went viral and is now writing a memoir about her life after her husband’s death.

With her kids away at summer camp, Gracie intends to write while also fixing up the house she and her husband bought days before he died. Enter sweet and cute contractor! Gracie has to learn how to navigate her feelings for her dead husband but also for this new man in front of her.

This book was really good! It was sad at times, but sweet and hopeful. I was cheering for Gracie!

This book is incredibly beautiful. I have no notes. If you love the way Annabel Monaghan delivers an emotional but hopeful story then you will enjoy this debut. This story follows Gracie navigating grief from losing her husband suddenly. She’s the mother of two incredible children. She is writing a memoir about her life with her husband and how she is dealing with the grief of losing him. She unexpectedly finds herself crushing on Josh who is helping renovate their second home in a heartwarming small town. I loved every second of this book. I could not put it down. I highly recommend it! Please pick up this book. It deserves all the hype it will receive.

Oh, how I loved this debut novel. 🥹 It follows Gracie, a widow of one year, who has two kids. After spontaneously writing an essay online about her grief, she becomes an overnight internet sensation with a book deal. She spends the summer at a vacation home she and her late husband Ben bought right before he died, while her kids are away at an 8-week summer camp. It’s during this time that she writes her memoir and figures out her “new self”. It doesn’t hurt that Josh is there everyday, a local handyman and home builder, working to improve her fixer-upper.

Was this a predictable plot? Yes. But it doesn’t matter. It’s beautifully written and everything still happened so organically. I loved both the main and ancillary characters and the way all of their relationships developed. While the reader can essentially predict how things will unfold, it was still realistic and authentic.

This story is about grief, but also hope, and learning how to carry heavy losses while still moving forward. This book isn’t at all depressing, and the author did a great job with keeping the sad factor at a minimum. I would say it’s more of an emotional experience, giving the reader all the feels. (As an FYI- Gracie’s late husband’s death occurs off-page and is only referenced/described by the main character.)

This is also a beautiful love story that developed naturally and from friendship as its base. It’s a refreshing break from the usual not-so-realistic romance tropes. The spice factor is low, with “fade to black” love scenes.

This book is such a special gem that I won’t soon forget. Highly recommend!

My Rating: 4/5 ⭐️
Spice Rating: 1/5 🌶️ (closed door romance)

In case you’re wondering, this book made me cry FOUR separate times.

I’m genuinely impressed that this is Kate’s debut novel. The writing is well done, the book flowed smoothly, and there’s so much that readers can relate to throughout the storytelling.

This book is almost therapeutic—a journey through grief, written in such a real, raw, and honestly, mature way. I loved how much day-to-day life we got to experience. The emphasis on how normal and important therapy is. The support systems we would all love to have.

This isn’t a story with drama, messy third act break-ups, or toxic characters. There is no real trope I could classify this under. This is a grown, forty something year old woman, going through the worst thing you could possibly imagine, and trying to discover what life is going to be like for her now.

It’s slower paced. It’s emotional. It’s reflective. It’s inspiring.

Kate Hash's debut novel, "Gracie Harris Is Under Construction," arrives like a gentle rain after a drought—welcome, necessary, and surprisingly refreshing. This isn't your typical romance novel where grief serves as mere backstory; instead, Hash constructs a nuanced exploration of how love can bloom again from the ruins of devastating loss. Set against the charming backdrop of fictional Canopy, North Carolina, the novel follows widowed mother Gracie Harris as she attempts to rebuild both her late husband's dream mountain house and her own shattered life.

The premise reads almost like contemporary women's fiction by committee: recently widowed writer with viral essay success escapes to mountain retreat, meets handsome contractor, finds love again. Yet Hash elevates this familiar framework through authentic emotional depth and a protagonist who refuses to be reduced to her trauma or her healing journey.

The Architecture of Character Development

Hash's greatest strength lies in her portrayal of Gracie herself. Rather than crafting a perfect grieving widow who gracefully transitions from sorrow to joy, Hash presents us with a woman who is messy, contradictory, and achingly real. Gracie grapples with the guilt of potentially moving forward while simultaneously craving connection and normalcy. Her internal monologue sparkles with wit even in darkness, whether she's hiding behind a bookstore counter to avoid a confrontational reader or explaining to her children why their father's death made her famous.

The character of Josh Anderson, the contractor who becomes Gracie's love interest, presents both opportunities and challenges for Hash's narrative. Josh is refreshingly grounded—a man dealing with his own professional burnout who finds purpose in restoration work. His patience with Gracie's complicated emotional landscape feels genuine rather than saintly, and Hash wisely gives him his own agency and desires rather than making him exist solely for Gracie's healing.

However, Josh occasionally veers into wish-fulfillment territory. His immediate understanding of Gracie's needs, his comfort with her children, and his perfect timing in emotional moments sometimes feel too convenient. Real relationships, even healing ones, typically involve more friction and misunderstanding than Hash allows this couple to experience.

The Supporting Cast: Children as Real People

One of the novel's most impressive achievements is Hash's treatment of Gracie's children, twelve-year-old Ava and ten-year-old Benji. Rather than depicting them as plot devices or obstacles to romance, Hash presents them as fully realized individuals processing their own grief while simultaneously worrying about their mother's wellbeing. Ava's protective instincts toward her mother, balanced with her age-appropriate desire for her mom to find happiness again, rings particularly true.

Benji's quiet maturity and practical nature provide both comic relief and emotional weight. His casual acceptance of Josh's presence in their lives doesn't feel rushed or unrealistic—it reflects a child's innate ability to recognize kindness and stability when he sees it.

Setting as Character: The Magic of Small-Town Canopy

Hash's fictional mountain town of Canopy becomes almost a character in its own right, clearly inspired by the author's love for western North Carolina communities like Brevard and Highlands. The Drip coffee shop, with its mismatched furniture and local art, serves as Gracie's sanctuary and creative workspace. Lenny's restaurant becomes a hub for both nourishment and gossip, while the local hardware store represents Josh's domain of competence and community connection.

The town's rhythm—swelling with summer visitors and camp families before settling into quieter local life—mirrors Gracie's own emotional ebb and flow throughout the season. Hash understands that place can be transformative, and Canopy's embrace of Gracie feels both welcoming and realistic.

Narrative Structure: The Art of Dual Timelines

Hash employs a clever structural approach, weaving Gracie's current summer renovation project with flashbacks to her life with Ben and the immediate aftermath of his death. These temporal shifts never feel jarring; instead, they illuminate how the past continues to inform the present without imprisoning it.

The novel's framing device—Gracie's work on her memoir about the first year of widowhood—allows Hash to explore the complicated relationship between lived experience and public narrative. Gracie's struggle with her viral essay fame and the expectations it creates provides sharp commentary on how society commodifies grief and healing.

Emotional Authenticity Versus Romantic Convention

Where Hash truly succeeds is in her unflinching portrayal of grief's ongoing presence even in moments of joy. Gracie doesn't "get over" Ben's death to make room for Josh; instead, she learns to carry her love for Ben while opening herself to new possibilities. This emotional complexity elevates the romance beyond simple replacement theory.

The novel's central metaphor—renovation as both literal and emotional rebuilding—never feels heavy-handed. The house's gradual transformation parallels Gracie's own healing, but Hash resists making the comparison too neat or the progress too linear.

Yet the book occasionally succumbs to romance novel predictability. Certain plot conveniences—Josh's immediate availability, his perfect skill set, the town's unanimous embrace of Gracie—sometimes strain credibility. The novel's timeline, compressed into a single summer, asks readers to accept rapid emotional development that might feel more earned across a longer period.

Writing Style: Conversational Grace with Literary Ambition

Hash writes with the accessibility of commercial women's fiction while reaching toward more literary depths. Her prose feels natural and unforced, particularly in dialogue between Gracie and her children or in Gracie's internal observations about small-town life. The author clearly understands how contemporary women think and speak, avoiding both millennial slang and outdated references.

Some of the novel's strongest passages occur when Hash allows Gracie's voice as a writer to emerge. Gracie's process of crafting her viral essays, her relationship with her editor, and her anxiety about public reception all feel authentically rendered—likely drawing from Hash's own background in content creation.

However, the narrative occasionally falls into tell-rather-than-show patterns, particularly when establishing emotional stakes or explaining character motivations. Some pivotal emotional moments could benefit from more subtle development rather than explicit articulation.

Thematic Resonance: More Than Just Recovery

While romance drives the plot, Hash weaves in broader themes about reinvention in midlife, the challenge of raising children through trauma, and the ways communities can provide healing. The novel's exploration of how public grief can become a commodity feels particularly timely in our social media age.

The book also tackles the practical realities of single parenting—from managing child schedules to handling home repairs—without romanticizing the struggle or making Gracie's competence feel superhuman.

Minor Criticisms and Areas for Growth

Hash's debut shows tremendous promise but reveals some areas where future works might strengthen. The novel's pacing occasionally rushes emotional development, particularly in the final third where Gracie's readiness for new love might benefit from more gradual evolution.

Additionally, while the small-town setting provides charm, some secondary characters lean toward archetype rather than individuality. The gossipy restaurant owner, the wise bookstore proprietor, and the helpful hardware store manager, while pleasant, could use more distinctive characteristics.

The novel's resolution, while satisfying on an emotional level, ties up loose ends perhaps too neatly. Real life, even happy real life, typically involves more ongoing complexity than Hash's conclusion allows.

Final Verdict: A Promising Foundation

"Gracie Harris Is Under Construction" succeeds as both accessible entertainment and thoughtful exploration of love after loss. Hash demonstrates genuine understanding of how real people navigate impossible circumstances, and her portrayal of family dynamics feels lived-in rather than manufactured.

While the novel doesn't reinvent the contemporary romance genre, it brings fresh perspective to familiar themes. Hash's background in travel writing and content creation serves her well in crafting a protagonist whose professional struggles feel authentic and whose voice remains engaging throughout.

The book's greatest achievement lies in its refusal to suggest that new love erases old pain. Instead, Hash proposes that healing involves expansion rather than replacement—that hearts, like houses, can be renovated without losing their essential character.

*Thank you, Dutton Books, for a copy of this book to review.*

Gracie Harris is a young widow. After her husband dies suddenly, she finds herself deep in grief, finding it hard to even get out of bed some days. She pens an essay about her grief that she sends to the New York Times’s Modern Love column and winds up a viral sensation. Practically overnight, Gracie becomes famous (is named “The Queen of Grief”), lands a job as a columnist for the NYT, lands a book deal, and begins a circuit of interviews on TV. Gracie also decides to start dating again after encouragement from her friends and her two kids. Oh, and this all happens in the first year after her husband’s death.

With a looming deadline for her manuscript, Gracie decides to spend the summer in the house she and her husband purchased in the small mountain town of Canopy while her kids are off to camp. However, the house needs repairs, which Gracie’s husband had planned to tackle. With the help of her realtor, she hires Josh, a burnt-out general contractor looking to slow down for the summer. The plan: Gracie will spend her days writing, while Josh tackles the to-do list Gracie’s husband left behind. What happens instead is Gracie and Josh finding every possible excuse to talk to one another under the guise of Josh helping Gracie prep for her many interviews. As the two get to know one another better, sparks fly, but with summer coming to an end, and Gracie’s return to reality approaching, she must decide if and where Josh fits into her life.

I got this as an ARC read and I was not disappointed!!The cover and the summary both had me drawn in instantly, and it continued with the dialogue!!

This was quite the emotional ride throughout the entire book, but it was really well written. Grief isn’t easy, but Gracie finds support in the small things and especially in Josh. Their connection sparked from the moment they met, and only grew deeper into the chapters

Seriously one of my favorite ARCS I’ve read!!

Gracie Harris is Under Construction 4.5⭐️

First, thank you so much NetGalley and Penguin Group Dutton for the ARC of Gracie Harris is Under Construction by Kate Hash. I was so excited to get the opportunity to preview this debut novel and it did not disappoint.

I will preface by saying while this book is a romance, it is dominated by the topic of grief. If you are a crier, like me, you may be ugly crying in just the first chapter, be warned. This book however, is beautifully written and doesn’t shy away from the tough topics. I think this book could be incredibly cathartic for a reader in a similar situation or experiencing grief of any kind.

Gracie Harris is a realistically flawed main character. She is experiencing the worst year of her life and learning to live in her new reality as a young widow/single mom while also navigating a new career that brings unexpected fame. I found her to be very relatable and funny. Even when she made mistakes it was easy to see why and to continue to root for her.

The author has a beautiful way of talking about the writing process that it made me want to read Gracie’s book and I’m not even a memoir lover. I liked that tidbits of the memoir made it into the story and that we got to read some of the essays/pull quotes from the column.

The romance in my opinion was not the star of the show but I do think the tension was palpable between Gracie and Josh from the start. A closed door romance felt appropriate given the main story line. I think open door may have been too much or taken away from the story. Josh was a wonderful love interest/MMC but honestly I thought he was a little too perfect. I loved how supportive and understanding he was but I find it hard to believe any man would be this perfect. It was also a bit of tease that the ex fiancée was so hyped up for that plot line to only last a few pages.

I also wish her kids had been a little more involved. It seemed too neatly wrapped up to have them at camp for the entirety of the story only to come home and immediately accept Josh, a new home, and completely different family dynamics. They seem like pretty easy going kids but I’m not sure it would ever be this easy in real like.

Overall, I am so happy to have taken a chance on a debut novel and I will for sure be on the lookout for future work by this author.

✨ stories about healing

Gracie Harris didn’t set out to become the “queen of grief,” but a viral essay penned after her husband’s funeral thrusts her into the limelight. Over a year later, she’s got a popular column in the New York Times and a book deal. A summer in the mountain home she and Ben purchased right before his death is what Gracie needs to finish her memoir while the kids attend summer camp. Her realtor recommends a charming contractor to fix up the place while Gracie writes, setting off a summer of change Grace never saw coming.

Books like this are the reason why I love NetGalley. What a stunning debut. I’ll compare Kate Hash’s style loosely to Katherine Center’s—it’s a nice blend of rom-com and women’s fiction that allows for maximum character growth alongside swoony romance. The tone is conversational with bits of Gracie’s writing incorporated throughout for dramatic effect.

Gracie’s arc truly moved me. It made me think deeply about the ways that grief changes us. I can’t imagine going through the loss she endured. I like how the author showed a healthy grieving process: Gracie attends therapy and leans on her community throughout the novel. She doesn’t bravely soldier on through the pain; it’s raw and real and I definitely cried towards the end.

As for the romance, I appreciated Josh and how attuned he was to Gracie’s emotional state. They have deep conversations and genuinely care about one another as friends before anything romantic happens. They are very sweet together.

Also, I looooved the small town setting and all of the little details Hash incorporates to make it feel real. The quirky coffee shop, the famous local BLT, the friend group get togethers… I wish this town was real!

For the closed door girlies, I’d call this cracked door or fade to black (still more than I prefer though). As well, Gracie frankly discusses her intimate life before and after her husband’s passing.

Thank you to Dutton Books and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
