Deputy U.S. Marshals Arliss Cutter and Lola Teariki brave a brutal and unforgiving Alaskan winter on a desperate manhunt that takes a blood-chilling twist in New York Times bestselling author and former U.S. Marshal Marc Cameron’s breathless, taut new wilderness adventure thriller for fans of Paul Doiron, CJ Box, Taylor Moore, and William Kent Krueger.

Deputy U.S. Marshals Arliss Cutter and Lola Teariki are at frozen Cheney Lake, finally nearing their prey. He’s Butch Pritchard, a killer-for-hire as ruthless as the Anchorage wind, and wanted for the murder of a 25-year-old pregnant woman in Missouri. A cruel hit orchestrated by the victim’s husband, Royce Decker, a former member of the St. Louis Metro PD and on the run too. As quickly as Butch is in the marshals’ sight he disappears, abandoning a bear of a partner who’s terrified for his life. But it isn’t Butch or Royce he’s afraid of.

If it isn’t those two outlaws, then who? And why? Right now, the creep in custody has gone silent and Arliss and Lola soon realize there’s more to this manhunt than they ever imagined. To see it through to the end they’ll have to find Butch first, then close on the cold-blooded husband. There is one lead to go on: a woman Butch has been involved with. His number one. She’s ready to talk. Even as scared to death as she is. When Arliss and Lola suddenly face an all-new case linked to this one, they’ll find out what everyone is so afraid of. And how many ways things could still go terribly wrong.

Action, a brutal Alaskan winter, and a manhunt are featured in Dead Line by Marc Cameron. This seventh book in the Arliss Cutter series has pulse-pounding scenes and ruthless criminals. Set mainly in Anchorage and Fairbanks and their surrounding areas, Supervisory Deputy United States Marshal is the head of the Fugitive Task Force in Alaska. He and his partner Deputy U.S. Marshal Lola Teariki, as well as other members of the task force, are closing in on Pritchard, a killer-for hire. He’s wanted for the murder of a 25-year-old pregnant woman in Missouri. The hit, arranged for by her husband Royce Decker, a former member of the St. Louis Missouri Metro Police Department, who is also on the run and believed to be in Alaska as well. However, when they find a linked case, the situation becomes even more dangerous.

Cutter and Teariki are very different characters. Cutter is experienced, uncomfortable with compliments, a fantastic tracker, no-nonsense, and somewhat surly. However, he can also be overprotective and have a way of connecting with innocent victims. He also believes keeping a secret is synonymous with telling a lie. Cutter is also observant and a bit of a perfectionist as well as being a very visual person which helps him in locating and apprehending criminals. Lola works out a lot, is talkative, has a bubbly personality, and wants assignments that are new and interesting. She also wants to glean all possible knowledge from Cutter. However, she also tends to run off on her own. They have flaws and virtues just like everyone else. New developments in Cutter’s life provide insight on his childhood.

Cameron does a great job of world-building and making the reader feel like they’ve been transported to the savage and merciless cold that the characters experience in this novel. This powerful page-turner kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The plot moves at a blistering pace with plenty of action and several brutal fights. Just when a reader thinks the situation can’t get any worse, it does. The plot is somewhat complex with scenes from different areas of the country that eventually link up and provide some twists along the way. The author’s experience with the U.S. Marshals Service including his work as part of a tactical tracking unit gives this book and the series authenticity.

Themes include murder, fugitive apprehension, secrets, corruption, family relationships, friendship, as well as motherhood choices and actions. The novel sets up a thread for the next book in the series. At the back of the book are a recipe, book club discussion questions, and comments on mothering styles.

Overall, this tense, exciting, gripping, and high-octane book takes readers on an emotional rollercoaster. If you enjoy action thrillers that have both strong male and female characters, then this may be the series for you. I can’t wait to find out what is next for Cutter and Teariki. Readers that enjoy action crime thrillers will likely enjoy Cameron’s writing. This is an outstanding series.

Kensington Publishing and Marc Cameron provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date is currently set for July 29, 2025. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.

“Alaska is … well, it’s just magical, ya know.”

If you haven’t heard of Marc Cameron or his series featuring Deputy U.S. Marshals Arliss Cutter and you love well-written Alaskan-set mysteries, you’ll want to do some investigating!

I love Cameron's work because he’s actually lived elements of his stories. He’s an Alaskan, writing about a setting he knows well; he’s lived and worked there as a U.S. Marshal for most of his career.

Cameron is a master at showing, not telling. For those of us who cringe at over-explained scenarios and dislike being spoon-fed facts, Cameron offers us something exciting. For example, rather than telling us that Cutter’s partner tossed and turned at night, he writes “Lola Teariki must have slept like a crocodile doing death rolls.” I love the invitation to create Cameron’s narrative in my mind!

Cameron is a master at subtle humor. In this case, the names he gives his characters and inanimate objects made me smile. I smirked at a pot-bellied woodstove being named Nebuchadnezzar and about a bad guy on the run being named Pewee Halverson (sounds like Herman, right?).

Cameron is a master at recurring themes. Dead Line spotlights motherhood and how different woman approach their role. Mim, Ursula and Josie are so different in their outlook and in the value they place in caring for the young. Despite not liking the choices Ursula made, She was my favourite female character in this book and I was glad Cameron gave us more insight into her family.

Cameron is a master at making criminal justice and the extreme weather the focus of his narrative. Cameron knows how weather drives action because he lives it each day in Alaska. He knows about scheduling flights, checking out windchill calculators, and why he would need to take the batteries from his electronic devices and place them next to his skin. He’ll tell you about how the freezing weather affects aviating, skiing, clothing choices/layering (and what FSO means), vehicle rubber tires, and our skin. He continually reminds readers that they are in ‘the Bush’ in Alaska. Setting is important to his stories and he makes sure you remember that fact.

Cameron always leaves readers with sound advice. This time it isn’t from Gumpy, but it’s worthy of copying into my journal.

“When we take a test and fail, the thing we think is the test isn’t the real test. The actual test is the way we handle the failure.”

I ALWAYS eagerly anticipate a Marc Cameron book. I hope you get to experience the same feeling one day soon.

I was gifted this copy by Kensington Publishing and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

He’s back! Arliss Cutter and his motley crew of US Marshalls and other law enforcement characters all based in AK, with all its artic blizzards, tundras and wildlife one can expect to see in AK. I loved how Cameron provided a character list in the beginning, not that I needed it because seven books in, I am well aware of who the players are and know all of their backgrounds from the beginning. However, that’s just the kind of reader I am and I highly suspect that the character list that Cameron provided was for those who are only now checking out this great series and starting with this installment.

Sam was a lowly soldier for a mob boss, Lazor Kot, when he started hooking up with Valeria, Kot’s daughter. Then Sam agrees to testify against Kot, who goes to prison and gets killed; Sam ends up in WITSEC. WITSEC rule #1: never, EVER, contact anyone from your old life, not even your mother, regardless of how much you miss her. Furthermore, inviting her to come see you is a death sentence – for both of you! If it’s not obvious, Sam is an idiot! Valeria had a team watching Sam’s mom, Josie, for years just waiting for Sam to screw up and contact her. Now, Valeria sends the team of hitmen to follow Josie to AK and kill both her and Sam.

There is another storyline, this one involving another mother, Arliss’s mother, Ursula, who left Arliss’s father when Arliss was only 5yrs old; his father died a few months later. Arliss and big brother, Ethan (now deceased) were raised by Grampa Grumpy (also deceased), a career lawman. Fast forward 40yrs later and she just shows up out of the blue wanting Arliss to find her 15yr old daughter. Wow!!! That takes a lot of gall and arrogance. Ignore your 5yr and 7yr old sons for 40yrs and then turn around and ask one to find your 15yr old daughter. Seriously!!! Good grief, let the dramarama begin.

While the book summary makes it sound like the storyline around Sam and Josie is the primary storyline, it wasn’t. The primary storyline is Arliss and Lola spending most of the story chasing down two killers, Royce Decker and Butch Prichard. Decker was an IN police officer who had hit wife murdered by hitman, Prichard. None of this is a spoiler since it all happened in probably the first 25% of the story.

It's deep into the second half that Arliss and Lola are actually tasked with finding Sam and Josie. It’s at this point that the story kind of merges with the other storyline around Decker and Prichard. All the while a horrendous blizzard has hit, with temps of -60F with wind chills of -100F, making Arliss and Lola’s search and rescue of Sam and Joe practically a suicide mission.

The continuing character development of Arliss, Lola, Mim and the kids was well done. The pacing was steady and the storyline very interesting. I loved the addition of Ursula, which added a whole lot of family drama to the story. I usually don’t like a lot of that, but in this series, I’ve really enjoyed it. I really wish Grumpy wasn’t already gone when the series started, but I’ve really enjoyed the way that Cameron has included him in the character development of Arliss. The writing was classic Cameron, a lot of time spent on the environment (I love stories in AK), USMS processes and procedures (interesting) and too much time on weaponry (meh). That’s for all the weapon aficionados who also love this series. I absolutely loved the finale!!! I can’t wait to see the effects of that whole scenario has on Arliss. I’m looking at an overall rating of 4.2 that I will be rounding down to a 4star review. I want to thank NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for sending me this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Marc Cameron, and Kesington Publishing for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
Always eager to get my hands on Marc Cameron’s latest in the Arliss Cutter series, I was not disappointed. Cameron delivers a strong story on the Alaskan tundra, where US Marshal Cutter and his partner are trying to locate another fugitive. While he is focused on work, Arliss cannot shake the surprise guest and their request of him. This will stir up old pains and develop new ones for a man who has never turned away from adversity. Marc Cameron delivers another stunning story that is sure to keep series fans impressed.

Deputy U.S. Marshals Arliss Cutter and Lola Teariki find themselves on a mission in the frigid part of Alaska, as if there is any other part. They are hunting for Butch Pritchard, who is wanted for murdering a pregnant woman back in Missouri. Pritchard has been on the lam and using the isolated nature of Alaska to shield authorities from finding him. All the while, someone has put a hit out on Butch, making this a dual race to find the killer, where end results are anything but predictable.

While nothing is quite as it seems, both Arliss and Lola soon realise that this will take all their concentration and patience, trying to stay one step ahead of a contract killer while trying to capture the man who has killed before. Working every angle they can, the Marshals make a play to find their fugitive before any more blood can be shed.

If this were not enough, the woman who birthed Arliss and abandoned him decades ago has randomly reappeared to make good and is full of excuses. Arliss wants none of it, particularly when he learns that there is a reason she has darkened his door, other than to plead for his forgiveness. It is sure to be a distraction Arliss does not need while he tries to battle the cold on his most intense case yet. Marc Cameron spins a tale that is sure to impress series fans and readers new to the collection alike!

Marc Cameron has a knack for pulling me in with his stories from the opening pages. Not only does he use a great recipe to pull the reader in with a strong story, but Cameron's use of Alaska as a setting proves unique and effective in equal measure. The narrative sets the scene and provides a strong foundation that is only bettered the further the reader progresses into the book. Characters, both recurring and the new ones who appear, help to shape things effecrtively while also complementing the larger story. Plot points work well, with the intensity of fugitive chasing and some of the Arliss Cutter backstory that never seems to get old. I quite enjoyed the surprises that keep the story from being too predictable. I am eager to see where Marc Cameron hopes to take Arliss in the next novel, as the series never seem to wane.

Kudos, Mr. Cameron, for another great book in the series.

Another exciting episode in the US Marshalls series featuring Arliss Cutter. These books are set in Alaska where nature is always a big factor and never more so than in this story where the temperature bottoms out at minus seventy-two degrees! There's lots going on in this novel, making for some real page-turning action. I also enjoy the relationship development ongoing from book to book. If you are new to the series, I'd recommend starting with book one so you don't miss any of that.

Many thanks to the author and publisher for providing me with an arc of this new thriller via NetGalley. I'm sort of glad I read it during our hot, humid summer weather instead of in the dead of winter, lol. And thanks to the author for the family recipes he shares in each book. This time it's for Aunt Chester Mae's Rich Chocolate Cream Pie. (But I have to say I've stopped using Crisco after learning how bad it is for our bodies so I'll have to make a different pie crust if I make this recipe.)

Another excellent Arliss Cutter novel from Marc Cameron.

Arliss and Cutter are on a manhunt for a former Missouri cop responsible for murdering his pregnant wife. While this is going on a mob hit squad is heading into their area to take out a snitch in witness protection.

With temps dropping to 70 below zero the marshals are braving the weather and armed opponents. Cameron lives in Alaska and knows the area and goings on very well.

This was my first Marc Cameron book, and overall it wasn’t a bad story. The plot was detailed and leaned heavily into the technical aspects of the investigation, which fits well with Cameron’s professional background. Since this is the 7th in the Arliss Cutter series, I think I would have benefited from knowing the characters and their backstories better.

I listened to the ARC audiobook from NetGalley, and unfortunately the narration didn’t work for me. It was too monotone and lacked the inflection needed to match the tension of the story. I might try another book in this series in the future, but I would start earlier and likely read in print instead.

I was biting my nails when I got close to the end of Dead Line, the latest chilling adventure with Arliss Cutter from master storyteller Marc Cameron. So many things going on at once that my mind had to really work, but told in a way that it was really hard to put down. I stayed up way past my bedtime to finish it. Cameron told stuff about cold that I haven't come across before and that's saying alot since I have read many books set both in Canada and Alaska. I would say that the author has made it hard for himself when it comes to writing the next adventure, this book will be hard to beat. I will send a big thanks to Netgalley and Kensington Books for letting me read this advance copy.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of Deadline by Marc Cameron. This was my first time reading a book in the Arliss Cutter series, and it won’t be my last.

Set in Alaska’s unforgiving sub-zero landscape, the setting added real depth to a strong and well-researched plot. Deputy U.S. Marshal Arliss Cutter and his partner Lola Teariki are sent to protect a witness, whose sudden disappearance triggers a tense search in extreme conditions.

I liked the solid character development. The forensic and procedural detail was sharp and believable, and the dynamic between Arliss and Lola was great. The subplot involving Sam Lujan and his mother was a great addition.

The narrator brought the audiobook to life, moving seamlessly between characters and voices. A fast-paced, engaging read with a memorable setting and a cast I’ll definitely return to.

Dead Line is the 7th book in the Arliss Cutter series, and it finds Deputy Marshal Cutter and his partner Lola Teariki on the hunt for a contract killer in brutally cold conditions. The record breaking cold temperatures, reaching 50 below zero in Fairbanks, Alaska are pivotal to the plot in this tense drama, which features two main storylines - the hunt for a fugitive killer and the person who hired him, as well as a developing plot line featuring mob figures searching for a relocated witness who testified against a mob boss years earlier. The plot lines converge as our protagonists battle the elements as well as their prey in this action packed thriller. Although there’s some resolution, there’s more to come with these storylines as the hunt is not over. Another great book in this series, looking forward to the next edition. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Arliss and Lola are on the hunt for a killer and also searching for a man who is in witness protection. The hunt is in Alaska in the coldest, most dangerous temperatures ever. Wow, how they had to dress to avoid frostbite or death in these unforgiving temperatures. Quite a wild exciting chase for Arliss and Lola.
You will have to read this installment to find out who survives this brutal climate.

Not my usual fare but what a compelling read! While #7 in the series, it can be read as a stand alone. With a handy "cast of characters" list at the beginning of the book, you know what kind of people Arliss (and you) will be dealing with. Cameron has such an artful way of explaining the workings of equipment and the process of Marshal protocol that is informative without being overly technical. Everyone in this story is competent at what they do and I found a lack of tropes that I'm used to seeing in the media of this type. I'm very glad I read this book and have already recommended the series to others. Thank you Kensington Books for sending me a copy of Dead Line.

I thoroughly enjoy every Marc Cameron novel, whether it's the Arlis Cutter series, his Jericho Quinn works, or his contributions as a legacy author for the Tom Clancy Estate, keeping the Jack Ryan Universe alive. I eagerly anticipate each one. In "Dead Line," we get dual competing storylines: one follows U.S. Marshals Arlis Cutter and his Pacific Islander partner, Lola Teariki, on a manhunt for a former Missouri policeman and his hired gun, charged with murdering his pregnant wife; the other involves an organized crime hit squad targeting a young man in WITSEC and his mother. The Alaskan winter, with temperatures dropping to seventy below zero, makes everything even more dangerous. An edge-of-your-seat page-turner—loved it!

I loved this book! The action was non-stop and carried through multiple storylines. I had no idea how they would all fit together until they did. Likable characters and great descriptions for the Alaskan weather. The author clearly knew what he was talking about. I’ll be adding this author’s other books onto my TBR list for sure.

The least of the series. Predictable and no pay off of set up of capturing the main baddie who goes down with hardly a fight after so much was made of his SWAT sniper background. The action scenes and character stuff are top notch as is usually the case with Cameron but this plot could use more twists and turns and a better author-reader contract pay off. Good for series fans.

Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Officers always say the toughest outlaws to catch are former law enforcement officers – they know all the investigative techniques and ways to avoid detection. That holds true for Deputy US Marshall Arliss Cutter and his team on their latest manhunt. Just a few months after solving his brother’s murder, Arliss is back on the job looking to teach his partner the tricks that have made him a success tracker while still keeping her safe. Will they be able to find this cold-blooded killer before Lola gets seriously injured or someone else ends up dead?

Dead Line is the 7th book in Marc Cameron’s Arliss Cutter series focused on law enforcement in the Alaskan tundra. Cameron, himself a retired Chief Deputy US Marshall currently living in Alaska, expertly weaves in professional knowledge and local facts to develop scenes that leap off the page and pull readers in. This novel delivers the suspense, family drama, and mystery I have grown to love in all of Cameron’s work.

I give Dead Line 5 out of 5 stars. I loved seeing the continuation of the storyline around Mim and the kids after the challenges they faced in Bad River. It was also interesting to learn more about the Cutter’s backstory and family. The fugitive chases and auxiliary characters give the novel a genuine feel. I am a huge fan of Marc Cameron’s works and this book is no different. Coming in at 336 pages, I finished this book in just one day – I couldn’t put it down!

If you have loved Cameron’s other works in the Cutter series or his works in the Jericho Quinn and John Ryan series, you will love this book. Given it is a domestic thriller with a degree of violence, this book would be best directed to mature audiences over 16. I would recommend this book to readers who love thrillers, mysteries, and law enforcement novels – especially if you have enjoyed works by John Sandford or William Kent Krueger.

I was excited to see a release date for this novel – I’ve been waiting for it since I finished the previous book! These characters and Cameron’s writing have me hooked on this story line and I can’t wait for more. As with every book in the Arliss Cutter series, I love the cover art for Dead Line, too – the sun just over the mountains is gorgeous!

Lots of action as Deputy US Marshals Arliss Cutter and Lola Teariki go after the bad guys in frigid temperatures.

Royce Decker was a police officer until he had his wife killed and stole millions from the wrecked car driven by the cartel’s courier before the money could be put in police lockup. Now he has to be found. His wife was shot and killed by a man whom they apprehended. The man (Pritchard) talks but he is deathly afraid of someone. With his help, Decker is apprehended. Pritchard is killed while in jail but cameras malfunctioned.

Sam Lujan is in witness protection for telling what he knows about a New York crime boss. The man was killed in prison and his daughter vows revenge on Sam. Her henchmen had his mother under surveillance and follow her to the frigid backcountry of Alaska. Cutter arrives to see the last of the group killed while the witness is safe.

Weeks later a woman’s body is found floating in the waters off Kodiak Island. She was nude and had a wolf’s head tattooed on the back of her neck. Two other women were found murdered earlier with the same tattoo. Was this the act of the person that all the fugitives were terrified about? Who is this person?

Dead Line by Marc Cameron started with a bang. We were in the middle of a chase scene and Cutter had to rescue his partner from a desperate situation.
Throw in a character in witness protection who does everything wrong and suddenly you have a manhunt in 70 below temperatures which races to the conclusion at a breakneck pace.
I really liked that the book was set in the harsh conditions of an Alaskan winter. Being a former marshal, Cameron has a lot of experience to draw from. His writing is also easy to read and flows smoothly.
While this was a good read, it wasn't quite up there for me. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it and will read more, but there was a lot going on and Cutter's actual hunt for the witness who was on the run didn't really start until the book was 80% done.
However, the scenes after that were top shelf and you could feel the cold as you read.

Thanks to Netgalley and Kensington for an ARC. What preceded was an honest and unbiased review.

A great story to read when your local temperatures are over 100 degrees and humidity is over 90%! Arliss Cutter is a dangerous man, but it takes one to protect those in the federal witness security program and apprehend criminals who are more afraid of someone than imprisonment or even the death penalty! He and Lola face one coldest Winters in Alaska’s history and have to improvise time and again. The cold wreaks havoc with the mechanical support they can usually count on in the line of duty, in addition to its effect on their own bodies. Their experiences and success would seem unbelievable, after all it is a work of fiction. However, with author Marc Cameron’s real life experience as a U. S. Marshal, I wonder if there is more truth than fiction in his writing? As an ordinary citizen I am deeply grateful for the the service of our country’s law enforcement officers and military men and women. They are the real Superheroes and Super-heroines!

Dead Line is a fast-paced, action-packed thriller that grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let go. This is book #7 in the Arliss Cutter series, but it reads perfectly as a standalone. Marc Cameron masterfully weaves in just enough backstory to bring new readers up to speed without slowing the momentum of the plot.

I absolutely loved this book! The storyline is engaging and suspenseful, with strong characters and a steady pace that keeps you turning pages (or intently listening). I hadn’t read any of the previous books in the series, but now I definitely plan to. Cameron’s writing strikes a great balance between plot, character, and action, making this an easy recommendation for thriller fans.

There were no dislikes for me—this book hit all the right notes.

The audiobook narration by David Chandler was excellent. He’s one of my favorite narrators, with a relaxed, confident style and flawless cadence. His voice work made it easy to distinguish characters and brought the story to life in a vivid and immersive way.

I highly recommend this book!
If you're a fan of the Joe Pickett series by C.J Box, this book is right up your alley, and you may hear a familiar voice in the audiobook.

Thank you to NetGalley and RBmedia for providing an advanced copy of the audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion.

40 years after she left he and his brother at their paternal grandfathers, Arliss Cutter’s mother mysteriously shows up at his home in Alaska. Cutter is not happy to see here and refuses to allow her back into hi# ,I’ve at this time. It is not until Cutter is away on A mission that she finally opens up to Mim, the reason for her return. Cutter is also involved in a very high profile case that demands his complete attention. He cannot allow any distraction to his case and the protection of all those involved.

It was along time coming, but the author has returned to give us what we are asking for. Between the Cutter series and the upcoming return of Jonathan Quinn, the authors fans are very happy

It took me awhile to get into this one. Not sure if it was the writing style or the subject matter, but I didn't get that "I have to read this" feeling. I am glad I finished it but now I have so many unanswered questions and I really am not interested in continuing to read the series. I was more interested in the mystery behind Arliss's mother than the case he was pursuing. Good story but didn't grab me like some other books I've read.

2.75 rounded up for this one. Way too many characters and way too much going on to keep up with this one or to build interest and empathy for the characters. The only thing that really got through to me over and over was that everyone was freezing to death in the Alaska wilderness. I guess if I have really tried I could have gotten more into the story of the US Deputy Marshalls in Alaska but it just got too convoluted for me to even care. Not crazy about the author's writing style either.

I received this book in a drawing through Good Reads.

This was a very good read. After I started I realized it was part of series, however it stood alone very well. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series. I am intrigued to discover what occurred prior to and post this book.
