EXCERPT: I had to do something. I didn't want the atmosphere of the gingerbread contest to be tainted by Lily's stalker. I knew that Liam and Sugar could take care of Shane. I took the side steps onto the stage and grabbed the microphone. 'Let me say a few words, and then let's officially kick this off, okay?' I looked at Lily and Becca.
'Thank you,' Becca whispered, scotting closer to Lily. 'He freaks me out so bad. I can't stand the way he looks at Lily.'
'You mean like he's trying to undress her with his eyes?' I asked.
Becca wiped her sweaty hands on her sweatshirt. 'No, like he's calculating how he's going to cut her up into tiny pieces and stuff her into a suitcase.'
Geez.
I wasn't expecting that.

ABOUT 'A HOLIDAY HOMICIDE': Annie Murray's festive plans at the Secret Bookcase are thrown into disarray when a celebrity baker drops dead during a gingerbread-baking competition...

As whispers of foul play swirl like snowflakes, Annie soon finds herself tangled in a web of secrets, small-town rivalry, and long-buried mysteries.

Can Annie unwrap the truth before the killer strikes again? Or will this be one Christmas she won't live to remember?

MY THOUGHTS: Recommended soundtrack while reading: Sugar, Sugar by the Archies.

A Holiday Homicide had me absolutely craving sweet treats while I was reading with all the talk of festive treats including acres of gingerbread! This is a fun and festive read which, although I guessed the murderer early on, kept me invested in the story almost to the end.

I have to admit to being a little lost about the mystery thread that is running through the entire series concerning the death of Annie's friend Scarlet as I haven't read books 1 & 2, something I need to remedy. It wasn't a problem in book 3, but it was here. Once the murderer had been apprehended, and I'll talk more about that in a moment, the mystery about Scarlet's death takes over. This is obviously leading into the next book which may, or may not, focus more on this. I really do prefer to have a separate story in each book which is wrapped up, but that is purely a personal preference on my part.

I was a little let down in that, once Annie and Dr Caldwell had figured out who the murderer was, it was wrapped up like this (and I quote): X had been arrested and confessed to everything. End of story. I don't know about you, but the chase and capture is an important feature to me.

I enjoyed Annie and Fletcher's working relationship and they have great plans for the future which will provide some interesting reading. I also like Annie's romance with Liam. It's slow and sweet and doesn't overwhelm the mystery thread.

Although this was a nice read, I definitely preferred #3, Death at the Dinner Party in which the focus of the plot was on the current mystery with only brief mentions of Scarlet's mystery.

This is the fourth book in the Secret Bookcase Mystery series. Annie works at a bookshop called The Secret Bookcase in the small town of Redwood Grove.

A Holiday Homicide is set at Christmas time and the holiday atmosphere of gingerbread, cinnamon and hot chocolate is almost overwhelming. Unfortunately someone drops dead at the baking contest, and it appears to be murder. Annie and her boyfriend Liam set out to discover the guilty party.

This was a very entertaining read full of good things like the Christmas spirit in a small town, and not so good things like modern day oversharing on the internet. There is a lot to look forward to in future books with the plans Annie and Fletcher are making for the bookshop and the developing romance between Annie and Liam. Roll on the next book.

My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

The plans for a gingerbread house competition at the Secret Bookcase in the small town of Redwood Grove, had Annie Murray excited for the weekend ahead. She, owner Hal Christie and colleague Fletcher had the plans running like clockwork, and the bookshop had never looked better. When everyone arrived, including school children for the junior category, there were lots of happy people wandering around. The arrival of social media influencer, Lily, meant things were due to begin - the wondrous gingerbread houses were set to blow everyone away.

When Annie discovered a body among the bookshelves, she was horrified. The police were soon on scene, as well as Liam, Annie's new beau, and together they tried to work out what had happened. But Annie could sense things were dreadfully wrong within the baking community - would she find the killer, or was she putting herself in terrible danger?

A Holiday Homicide is the 4th in A Secret Bookcase Mystery by Ellie Alexander and I enjoyed it very much. Although I figured out who the victim would be, as well as who the killer was, quite early, the journey to the end was fun and entertaining. I'm looking forward to seeing where the author takes Annie and the crew next. Recommended.

With thanks to NetGalley & Storm Publishing for my digital ARC to read and review.

Annie is preparing for the Christmas holidays, in her role working at the Secret Bookcase. Everyone is shocked when a celebrity baker dies at their gingerbread baking competition. There are rumors that she had a heart condition, but then evidence of murder is discovered. Annie works with her friends, and her new love interest Liam to search for clues. It’s a fun cozy holiday mystery, with baking and bookstores. 3-1/2 stars.

This fourth book in the Secret Bookcase mystery series is another winner for Ellie Alexander. This one is filled with Christmas atmosphere, and centers around a gingerbread house contest being hosted by the Secret Bookcase bookstore. Once again, we get a lot of local color, with the setting in a northern California town called Redwood Grove. The main character is Annie Murray, who runs the special events for the mystery-centric bookstore. Gingerbread houses have nothing to do with mysteries, but that’s okay, as it’s a great way to drum up interest and business for the store. The gingerbread house contest has attracted a baking influencer named Lily who will be live-streaming from the event. One of the most interesting things about this book was being able to see both the public side of a social media influencer and the behind-the-scenes aspect.

As indicated by the title, there’s a death at the event and there are several suspects. I guessed correctly on the murderer’s identity but not the method. Along with that mystery, there’s progress in the murder case of Annie’s best friend, Scarlet, which has been a topic running through all four of the books in this series. I hope we’ll get more in the next book in the series (I’m assuming there will be at least one more!) There is also progress in Annie’s plans for her future - will she continue to work at the bookstore or follow her first love (she studied criminal justice in college) and join her mentor in an official capacity in the police department? There’s also progress in Annie’s relationship with Liam, the local pub owner.

Thank you to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

It has been awhile, but I have read an earlier book by Ellie Alexander. However, this is the fourth book in A Secret Bookcase Mystery series and I haven't read any other books in this series. This one could easily be read as a stand alone cozy mystery though.

Description:
Annie Murray's festive plans at the Secret Bookcase are thrown into disarray when a celebrity baker drops dead during a gingerbread-baking competition...

As whispers of foul play swirl like snowflakes, Annie soon finds herself tangled in a web of secrets, small-town rivalry, and long-buried mysteries.

With pub-owner and new love Liam by her side and the help of her loyal bookstore colleagues, Annie sets out to solve Redwood Grove’s latest murder mystery. And the closer she gets to the truth, the more she discovers that the baking community isn’t as sweet as it seems…

Can Annie unwrap the truth before the killer strikes again? Or will this be one Christmas she won't live to remember?

My Thoughts:
Reading this cozy mystery was an enjoyable experience. I loved the Secret Bookcase book store and its owner Annie Murray. I liked the way she worked to draw the community together. Alexander had me fooled in this one - the killer wasn't who I thought it was. Annie and her bookstore colleagues make a good team. The investigation was fun to follow. Liam and Annie were sweet together. Annie also had a career decision to make and I'm sure she made a great decision.

Thanks to Storm Publishing through Netgalley for an advance copy.

Rounding up 4.5⭐
Inventive holiday cozy featuring the folks we have come to love in the last year. Don't worry if this is your entry into the series, you will still totally enjoy the gingerbread contest and figuring out the murder of a baking influencer. And I bet you will be eager to get into the earlier books as well. The bookstore itself inhabits my dream. A mansion with a secret bookcase! Across all four books underlies the murder of Annie's best friend in college as the two of them investigated a cold case as part of the criminology major. And there is a breakthrough, of sorts, in this book. Now I can't wait until the next book set around Valentine's Day comes out. Thanks to netgalley and Storm for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Visiting the Secret Bookcase in Redwood Grove, California, is a delight for mystery lovers throughout the year. The allure of this independent bookstore can be found in every cozy corner of the old manor house, with décor designed to honor Agatha Christie. During the Christmas holiday season, the enchantment is particularly magical. Soon, all visitors' senses would tingle during the first-ever Gingerbread Bake-off, hosted in partnership with Sweet Room, the local bakery with a prominent social media influencer as a special guest. Even before the winners are tabulated, an unexpected event will spark conversations that extend beyond the gingerbread entries.

The bookshop owner and employees share a close-knit relationship in a small-town setting. The author's descriptive writing vividly brings the holiday season to life, starting the storyline with sparkling visions of delectable gingerbread crafted into dreamy creations that will be announced as the winner of one of the six event categories.

Readers of the series are familiar with investigations that never fail to intrigue. The cleverly placed red herrings play a crucial role in building suspense, shifting the focus from a certain person of interest to the implausible suspect. The progress in Rebecca's ongoing investigation of a cold case that is deeply personal to her, along with growth in her romantic interest, especially with seasonal magic, adds to the charm of this holiday offering.

Reviewer's Note: Each novel can be enjoyed on its own; however, reading them in order highlights the gradual evolution of the bookstore's marketing strategies, the development of Rebecca's investigation into a cold case, and the progression of her relationship with a local pub owner.

Thank you to Ellie Alexander, Storm Publishing, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an eARC of this novel.

I loved returning to the charming town of Redwood Grove and the Secret Bookcase bookstore. In this instalment Annie is hosting a Gingerbread House competition at the bookstore, and things are really sweet until influencer drops dead …

It was entertaining, full of twists and turns and I didn’t completely guess whodunnit until Annie did..
Overall, I'm thoroughly invested in this series and excited to see where the author takes these endearing characters next!

I highly recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends and I can’t wait for book 5 to come out!

The 4th book in this bingeable cozy mystery series! While not my favorite in the series, this was still a fun and easy one to get to. In this book we see Annie and the small town hosting an influencer who arrives to judge a gingerbread competition for the holidays. Things take a turn when the baking influencer ends up dead!

The plot for this one was a little too easy compared to some of the others in the series. And I just wasn’t as invested in the baking influencer plot. I did love seeing Annie and Liam’s romance in this one and we get more interesting things happening with Annie’s late best friend’s cold case. I’ll definitely continue on since these are just so easy to binge!

Christmas is coming, and local bookstore worker Annie Murray is both excited and thrilled to be helping host a gingerbread baking competition at the Secret Bookcase in Redwood Grove. Local baker Sugar has arranged for a very popular influencer to attend, which pretty much guarantees the success of the festive event.

The discovery of a body in the bookstore changes everything, and Annie soon finds herself looking for clues rather than picking her favourite gingerbread house! At the same time she has major decisions to make regarding her future with two job offers, a new and exciting relationship to enjoy, and the chance to finally gain further information regarding the death of her best friend a decade earlier. With so much happening, Annie is glad to have her friends around to help, but with danger stalking her every move, will anyone be able to save her?

Book four in Ellie Alexander's Secret Bookcase Mystery Series seems to be a pivotal instalment. Added to the murder investigation are job offers, new clues in an old case, and the prospect of a romantic Christmas after too many festive seasons alone. Even with all this going on, there is no confusion, and everything fits together seamlessly. I like Annie, Pri, Liam, and all the main protagonists, and the scenes in the bookshop are always a joy to read. Book five is released just in time for Valentine's Day, and I can't wait to see what will happen next with the intertwining storylines.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Storm Publishing, but the opinions expressed are my own. This is a great book but has a few spoilers, so I would recommend reading these in order. Recommended. 4.5 rounded up to 5 stars.

This is another wonderful read in this new series by Ellie Alexander. Annie is going all out to celebrate the holidays in the bookstore by hosting a gingerbread house contest being sponsored by a new local bakery owner and a famous baking influencer. The influencer and bakery owner display amazing concoctions they have made, and over 90 locals have houses to be entered in the judging. With the glorious decorations, samples by local student bakers, and holiday carolers, the atmosphere is wonderful until Annie comes across the social influencer, passed out on the floor and though she tries, fails to resuscitate her. Was it a heart attack or something more sinister? Did the influencer have enemies? Who is missing the holiday spirit? While Annie deals with this, she is also dealing with questions about her professional future, her relationship with Liam and her upcoming meeting with the man who maybe able to shed some light on what happened to her friend Scarlet. Annie and friends are straight out in this holiday page turner. Perfect holiday cozy read. I am enjoying this series a lot! Each book so far has a ‘double’ mystery. There is the ‘cozy’ mystery and then there is what I feel is more a ‘csi’ type mystery.

This is such a clever blending of the two types of mysteries I enjoy so much so it really is the best of both worlds.

I particularly enjoyed this book because this one made a big leap forward in our ‘csi’ mystery which makes me want book 5 in a hurry!

Oh, I am enjoying this series so much! And the covers are so eye-catching and detailed. One of the things I enjoy about cosies is how delightful the covers can be.

Another clever mystery in the series and another chance to spend time in Redwood Grove. The setting for these books is so well described and inviting. I'd love to be able to spend time there in real life. And the mystery book store is back centre stage in this book, which is a treat. It means we get to see more of Hal and Fletcher, who I felt were missing in the previous book of this series. I'm so glad we have them back again.

This is a festive mystery, with bucket loads of gingerbread creations to read about. If you have a sweet tooth, you may be tempted to tuck in to some festive treats while reading this, so maybe don't read if you have easy access to your pantry! And other than the main mystery, there is some advancement in the over-arching cold case mystery introduced in book one. Not as much progress as I'd have liked (I am starting to feel a bit impatient waiting for more), but some progress. I hope we see something more soon. Four books in the series already seems a long time to wait.

Still, this is a fun and enjoyable cosy. If you've already read this series, I'm sure you'll love this book. If you're new to the series, go back and read book one first if you can. It is a series where the character history is important.

I'm looking forward for more!

This is the fourth installment of this cozy mystery series, and this one sees the bookshop hosting a gingerbread baking competition.

perfect for those looking for a cozy

This is the fourth book in the Secret Bookcase Mystery series and if you have been following this series, you are in for a treat with this one. Annie Murray is full of ideas on how to draw more customers to the Secret Bookcase bookstore owned by Hal Christie. The latest event is a gingerbread house contest, partnering with popular baking influencer Lily Hawthorne. On a personal note, Annie is at a crossroads in her life - should she take Hal up on his offer for her and her friend and co-worker Fletcher to take on a larger role in the bookstore or should she use her criminal justice degree to pursue a career in law enforcement? When a suspicious death takes place during the competition, maybe Annie's assistance with the investigation will help her decide.

This book is my favorite in the series so far. It has a holiday-related plot, progress in Annie's relationship with bar owner Liam Donovan, and new information on the death of her high school best friend, an overarching storyline through all the books. I've included all four of the books in my photos, because they all go together so well. They are all quick, fun reads with interesting characters in a fun setting. I love the ending and look forward to more in this series.

I was provided a review copy of this ebook from NetGalley and Storm Publishing, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.

I’ve read and enjoyed a number of Ellie Alexander’s cozy mysteries, but this one was…underwhelming. Most cozies are pretty formulaic, and we readers accept that, because it’s the characters and the vibe that keeps us coming back. We may not seek depth in these types of books, but I do look for believability.

This one was beyond predictable, and there are major plot holes. I had the victim, the killer, the means and method, and the red herring all identified well before the body hit the ground. Also, there some factual issues were present that I couldn’t get past. First off, the victim dies with no discernible cause of death, but it turns out the cause of death was cyanide poisoning. Okay, fine, but I’ve read enough murder mysteries to have learned a few things: first, you can’t pop into your local CVS and pick up a batch of cyanide, and it’s never explained how the killer came into possession of it. Second, the body wasn’t contorted, even though every cyanide death I’ve ever read about causes extreme rigidity and disfigurement in the victim. Third, no sweet almond smell, which accompanies death by cyanide, and thus the supposedly trained criminologists on the scene have no clue what killed the victim. Also, Annie administers CPR to the victim, which she presumably wouldn’t have done had the sweet almond smell been present, or if the victim had shown signs of rigid disfigurement. Plus CPR not only utilizes chest compressions, but also rescue breathing, which also would have killed Annie. It doesn’t say she did rescue breathing, but as she states she is trained in CPR as an asset to her job, she would have known to administer rescue breathing.

All in all, these plot holes took away from the enjoyment of the story for me. As Ellie Alexander’s cozy series go, this one has been disappointing, and much more fluff than substance.

The entire bookstore hummed with the murmurs of quiet conversations, the rustling of pages, and the lilting sounds of instrumental Christmas carols. The scent of ginger, nutmeg, and cloves wafted from the Sitting Room and Parlor, where readers were curled up with mugs of strong tea and stacks of new reads.

3 stars for a cute little holiday murder mystery.👩🏻‍🍳

Sugar Lester, the small town’s sweet shoppe owner, is set on bringing attention to her bakery, & small town by way of a Gingerbread competition, what could go wrong? Especially when Sugar’s invited someone extra sweet to join this bake off.

In comes Lily Hawthorne, social media’s most influential baker, & her assistant Becca, breezing into Redwood Grove hoping to put this small California town on the map but the batter isn’t the only thing they’ll be mixing up.

Then when something happens to Lily, while filming “b-roll” at Redwood Grove’sAgatha Christie themed mystery bookshop, “The Secret Bookcase”, novel detective, & soon to be co-owner Annie Murray is determined to get down to the truth of the matter!

Will Annie solve the case in time, or will she still be searching for answers like those she’s been digging up in the murder of her best friend, Scarlet, right before their college graduation?

Annie and her friends had another exciting case to investigate after another murder took place in her beloved bookstore workplace. Hal and Fletcher continue to be the most amazing boss and coworker anyone could ever wanna work with. And that Pri’s the best bestie a girl could ever imagine having. She always has Annie's back. Dr. Caldwell was such an awesome mentor and we finally get to find out what Annie's decision’s gonna be as far as working with her former criminology professor.

Last but most definitely not least, I absolutely love how Liam and Annie’s relationship did a complete turnaround for the better. I never like conflict with a couple and now they're super cute and solid. He surprised even Annie with how she could influence his reading choices now when she actually got him interested in mysteries.

The main case was solved and Annie's cold case concerning her old friend was getting a little bit warmer so I'm eager to see what happens next. Can't wait to read the next installment!

#AHolidayHomicide #NetGalley is another great addition to this new series.
As the holidays approach, Annie is thinking about different ways to bring in more customers, so a gingerbread house competition is the winner.
It seems there's a lot of jealousy within the competitors and it's not long before Annie finds herself wrapped up in another murder investigation.
I've grown quite fond of the colorful cast of characters in this series, as well as the bookstore itself.
I'm looking forward to reading another book in the series.

A Holiday Homicide by Ellie Alexander

Rating: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you to Storm Publishing, Netgalley, and Ellie Alexander for access to this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

With plans set for a gingerbread house competition at the Secret Bookcase in the town of Redwood Grove, Annie Murray was thrilled for the weekend ahead. However, when Annie discovered a body among the bookshelves, she was shocked. The police were soon on the scene, along with Liam, Annie's new boyfriend. Together, they tried to work out what had happened and aimed to solve the murder. As the story goes along, Annie begins to sense that something is very wrong within the community. She begins to wonder if she will find the suspect or if she putting herself in danger.

A Holiday Homicide is the fourth book in the series. I enjoyed reading this one and I loved the small town, holiday vibes. Such a cozy mystery that also features a sweet relationship between Annie and Liam. Going on the journey with Annie as she works to solve the mystery was entertaining. I'm excited to see how the author continues to develop this series!

A Holiday Homicide by Ellie Alexander is a holiday delight! This festive cozy mystery, set in picturesque Redwood Grove, California, perfectly blends intrigue with holiday cheer. The story takes place in a charming mansion that houses an actual Secret Bookcase bookstore, a setting that immediately draws readers into its warm, whimsical atmosphere.
As Sugar secures a popular baking influencer for the gingerbread house contest, a murder disrupts the festivities and keeps readers guessing. Annie Murray, full of ideas on how to draw more customers to the bookstore owned by Hal Christie, finds herself at a personal crossroads. Should she accept Hal’s offer to take on a larger role at the Secret Bookcase alongside her friend and co-worker, Fletcher, or should she follow her passion for law enforcement and put her criminal justice degree to use? When a suspicious death occurs in the bookstore during the contest, Annie’s involvement in the investigation may just help her decide which path to take. Though A Holiday Homicide is the fourth book in the series, it works as a standalone. Ellie Alexander’s writing is both engaging and inviting, and her characters are wonderfully endearing, making it easy to look forward to the next mystery. 3.75/5

Q: Why did the gingerbread man go to the doctor?

A: He felt crumby.

Does it get any better than Christmas cozies?
Nope, not in my opinion. Don't be deceived by this title A Holiday Homicide is full of festive fun, culinary delights, and the treasure of friendships.

Annie, Hal, and Fletcher of the Secret Bookcase bookstore welcome an online baking influencer, Lily, to host a holiday bake-off of gingerbread houses.
"Hey, no gingerbread scandals shall occur on my watch," Fletcher responded. "Our fellow Redwood Grove residents have baked their holiday hearts out, and I refuse to be the reason for any sugary, spicy drama." [With writing like this, how can you not get into the holiday spirit?!] Can Lily's creativity and ego compete with all her competition?!? Well, she winds up dead, so...

In addition, a Christmas miracle occurs, as Annie decides upon her next career move! We also
learn more details about the secondary mystery that has always cast a shadow over Annie's life.

I am in the edge of my seat waiting for book 5!
Happy holiday reading!

I love a good cozy mystery! I’ve loved Ellie’s books, but this was the first I’ve read in the Secret Bookcase series, and I immediately need to go back and read the first few books. I loved that there was both a mystery that took place throughout the book, as well as an overarching mystery that seems to span the series itself. I really enjoyed the gingerbread-baking competition and all the cozy holiday vibes it inspired. I loved Annie’s character and getting to know the community she’s part of in Redwood Grove. I really enjoyed this one!

This is the fourth book in the Secret Bookcase Mystery Series and it’s definitely my favorite. I liked getting to know the characters in the first three books, and getting acquainted with the community of Redwood Grove, but this book started to push forward some of my favorite storylines. There’s been an ongoing cold case that we first learned about in book 1, that finally moves forward in this book. And the new romance between Liam and Annie really takes root in this one as well. I love that there are so many possible tangents for future stories, and I can’t wait to read them all.

I couldn't wait to dive into another book by Ellie. I've been loving this series, and this one was no different. I just love the secret bookshop and all the characters. The murder was good, the investigation was on point and kept me wondering who did it which I had 3 suspects in mind but couldn't confirm who it was until the end! And on top of that, we are left on what I think is a small cliffhanger but I'm all here for it. I did love that this was based around Christmas time but it's not heavily Christmas themed. Just a great little cozy mystery perfect for the holiday season.

I devoured this book and this cozy mystery series keeps getting better and better! Returning to charming Redwood Grove in all his small town vibes is very nostalgic and I want to go visit The Secret Bookcase bookstore.

This one was easy to follow, kept me invested and I loved the advancements in Annie's personal life too.

The whodunnit in these books are so good and I keep thinking I'm going to guess the killer but I don't.

I loved all the baking aspects and it was fun to learn about the future of The bookstore.

I highly recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends and I can’t wait for book 5 to come out!

I love this series and it is available on KU!

I wish I read this pre Christmas but it kept me in the holiday spirit after! Fun cozy mystery set in Northern California.

The FMC works in a bookstore of my dreams and she is holding a gingerbread baking event that draws an influencer. Well someone ends up dead and it’s up to her to find out who.

I love the character because she has a criminology background and works with the police. She is a likable and funny character. Great story, love the plot. The characters are all fun and quirky.
