Essays by leading scholars explore the lives and tragic early deaths of the three Brontë sisters. They set two of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century :Charlotte's Jane Eyre and Emily's Wuthering Heights, in the context of the other prose and poetry of the sisters, and trace the reputation of the Brontës through history. A detailed chronology and guides to further reading are included.
I read this in regard to my interest in Anne Bronte, whilst she obviously not held in the same regard to her sisters - it is at times surprising the criticism towards her written technique.
This is a fine collection of informative, interesting essays that are both scholarly and readable. All three sisters get plenty of attention in this book.
There are many interesting analyses of the similarities and differences of the three sisters. The author hinted but dared not say that the 1939 Wuthering Heights adaptation sucked.
Amazing, and so much fun! I’m not unbiased (I’ve read all the Brontë books and several biographies and love all of them), but this book was incredible. Makes me want to reread all their novels.
