Insomniacs After School is a slice-of-life manga about two high school students, Ganta and Isaki, who suffer from insomnia and bond over their shared interest in astronomy.
In volume 13, they embark on a university tour to Kansai with their friends and enjoy the sights of Osaka. They visit famous landmarks such as the Dotonbori, and try various local delicacies such as takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and kushikatsu. The volume is full of humor, adventure, and romance as the characters explore a new city and face new challenges.
The volume is a refreshing and enjoyable read that showcases the characters’ personalities and interactions. The art is colorful as it could get could get being black and white, and lively, depicting the vibrant culture and scenery of Osaka. The story is fun and captivating, mixing comedy, drama, and romance. Fans of the series will love this volume and look forward to the next one.
I enjoy the way that this series lets itself breathe and enjoy a quiet moment, but that has become both a blessing and a curse in recent times. Sometimes it doesn’t quite say enough amidst its page count.
The opening chapters are a trip to Osaka to check out university life. If you were waiting for the inevitable ‘this is Osaka and we did research’ pile of pages, welcome to a large chunk of this section.
I like these photorealistic little jaunts, but they are definitely a dime a dozen and this one keeps on keeping on a bit long. Then again, having that context is important. I will say, the storyline does a fantastic job of portraying these kids as kids and ones who are absolutely out of their depth at that.
Seeing them comparing themselves to the people in Osaka, having trouble navigating, and generally causing low levels of chaos and being overwhelmed was a great choice. I think this series is overall grounded in a way that others are not, to its benefit.
There’s then an interlude about studying, showing everybody being buried in their books, that is okay. I understand how important and crazy these exams are, but stories focusing in on them can be a bit tiresome.
It was interesting to see this segue into Ganta’s issues with his mother and how that factored into his insomnia that brought him together with Isaki in the first place. The scene where she cooks for him is brutal because he’s so young and innocent that he can’t see what’s coming, even though the audience certainly can.
Naturally this coincides with Isaki having another health issue at the worst possible time. In reality, her condition has been so questionable that it’s surprising nothing happened sooner.
After spending so much time apart to study, we have a tearful reunion that’s filled with uncertainty for the future as everything Isaki is hoping for bumps up against her illness and impending surgery.
This lets the volume end on a hopeful note and a very sweet date that clearly would have gone a lot farther if Ganta didn’t recognize the potential issues if they did. I think this series integrates illness far better than many similar ‘generic whatever sickness’ manga.
A good volume, although one that I definitely found a little slower than usual at a few points. It has all the good things you want, but it just felt a smidgen lacking from being perfect.
4.5 stars - a strong romance that has something to say besides just being in love. I won’t round it up, but I liked the bulk of what it was doing.

It's been quite a while since I've felt so... I don't know. Soft? Reading a Manga. This was lovely from the very beginning - surprisingly lovely!
As soon as I started reading I fell in love with the art, pace and characters. The story is lovely too... very unique in my opinion. Even if its set during high-school - a very common thing among slice of life and romance manga -, the concept itself is very unique and lovely! (I am pretty sure I will repeat lovely a few times, but there is no other better word to describe it!).
It is silly, in a way, but very romantic the whole "I am able to rest properly close to you". The way you learn about Nakami and Magari, their fears, anxiety, issues and story, is amazing. Falling in love with each other thanks to falling in love with photography, the concept of another day, setting up future plans and managing everything that comes with it - including what it is to live and to be able to live with a chronic condition or love someone with it, in no "what a pity" or "I'm sorry for you" way. This was lovely!
It was also great to know the rest of the characters. They are like a tiny family, in a sense. Coming of age and growing with other people are two things I think 'Insomniacs after school' capture really well. As well as the beauty of the world! And learning! And falling in love with people, places and new things!
I know that to some the ending might be abrupt, but for me is perfect. Its not a fully closed ending, which I think is a great idea considering the story, but is not an open ending either. I also love the fact that, in the end, we don't /see/ how Magari looks like after all those years. I think it fits the concept of the eclipse and the moon pretty well. You just know they are still there, living, loving each other and loving photography and the world. Of course I would love to see and know more about what happened during all those years, what happened to their friends, where they are and if they managed to end where they truly wanted to. But I am not sad about it, I really love that it's also somehow put out there for our own interpretation.
I really liked this! I am the biggest Slice-of-life fan, and I love when we get to see different ideas, and concepts through the lives of the characters. I really don't know how to phrase it properly, but some of those topics (being afraid of the future, being comforted, learning about what's good and what's not about the people you love etc etc) are timeless, and it doesn't matter if you are in high school or turning 40 for them to feel the same, or at least similar. Am I making sense? I don't know. I have so many thoughts right now, I guess I need more time to properly organize them.
In short: I loved it. I can't wait to draw every single character. Read it again. This made me really soft. It was lovely.
Well, I’m glad that this didn’t end sadly but the ending was kind of unfulfilling. It was so abrupt. At least show all the friends together… Oh and why hide Magari’s face???
Overall, this was a good series. Not one that sticks out to me though. I give it a 3/5 stars. It’s definitely a nice and calming series. I did get bored here and there.. I definitely did not have insomnia after reading these LOL
It’s a good volumes, leading up to the series conclusion. Absolutely loved this volume, and the build up and conflict really pays off for the final volumes.
(Which caught me off guard ending so suddenly. But that’s for another review.)
Continues to be really sweet, but the ending of this volume gets to me. That part of Magari giving sweets to Ganta is sweet. I though that Ganta was going give that good health fortune to Magari, and the fact that there was a bit of a flashback was profound. Also good for them to show off Osaka.
