W.C. Madden began writing professionally when he was a member of the U.S. Air Force in 1976. He attended the Defense Information School and graduated second in his class. He became a photographer, sports editor, editor, and instructor while serving in the Air Force.
After retiring from the Air Force in 1986, he received his journalism degree from Our Lady of the Lake University in 1989, thanks to the GI Bill. He then became a freelance writer for magazines. Professionally, he has become a technical writer twice.
He began writing books in 1993, and his first book was the “Hoosiers of Summer.” He wrote several baseball books after that title before writing local history nonfiction books while living in the Indianapolis area.
In July 2006, he moved to Monticello, Indiana, and started writing about local history there. He also became a magazine editor in 2013 for the next decade. Then, he worked as a reporter for the News & Review until retiring in 2023. Now, he’s a freelance feature writer for the newspaper.
His goal is to write fifty books. He hopes to meet that goal. This is his 47th title, and he’s now working on three other books.
