So wish we could give a five plus rating sometimes. This was not a great work of art or a book to be remembered all of ones days. But for the 9 hours i spent with it today, it was wonderful. I could not put it down, EVERY PAGE was great. every character was interesting, every scene real, every event believable, It was not predictable, not at all, well the ending a bit. I see it is a first in a series so will see if i have the others and if not will go on Ebay to get them

An excellent book with wonderful characters who all struck a cord with the reader. I feel like I could identify with parts of each of them. Somewhere a little bit more relatable than others but they all had their story to tell. Of course you had a pretty good idea of what was going to happen at the end but how they were going to get there was a whole Nother deal. The plot was very memorable as well with a lot of different twists and turns and inter es that you wouldn’t have seen coming really. It’s good as a standalone but I see that it’s the beginning of a series so I’m pretty sure I’m going to continue on with it.

First of a two book series and I thought it was excellent. Story of a young girl, leaving home after killing a rapist in a time, and at a place called Mud Flats on the Ohio River, where no law existed. She gets on a flatboat going t Cairo, Illinois with several families. Tragedy occurs on the river and she ends up trying to lead 12 women and children on a perilous trek. Very compelling page turner. Looking forward to starting the second book of the series.

Read this on my vacation to Germany. I love historical fiction, particularly regarding the early years of our country. Good strong characters & decent storyline. Would like to find the next book as I found this one at a garage sale & it looks like it's a series.
