Sometimes the high road leads straight to Hell.

Avriel
Turning twenty-one is almost universally seen as the age of transformation, of coming into one's own, reaching adulthood, and sometimes even as a symbol of death and rebirth. I never knew how literal that last part could be until, on my twenty-first birthday, I died and was resurrected as a demon.

Well, half-demon and would have died if I wasn’t prophesized to become the Antichrist and take over the world. All I wanted was to survive graduation, achieve my dream of becoming an artist, and maybe have Marc, the hot new guy who I thought liked me for me, be anything other than a lust demon hoping to guide me on my path to the apocalypse.

Marchosias
Occasionally, ya gotta make yer own destiny, my lovies, so when I found a thin spot in the veil between Hell and earth, I leapt right through it. Sensing the soon-to-be successor to the throne of Hell, I insinuated myself on campus and into his life to await his awakening and fell to my knees in supplication once he did. Pity Avi is so set on denying his destiny.

But I can convince him. I will serve and aid and arouse my master in whatever manner necessary to get what I want. I’ve been an underling, a doormat, a lesser demon for far too long, and his path to glory is going to be mine.

Son of the Arch Demon is a standalone novel. It has new formatting and a new cover, since originally being part of the MM paranormal romance collaboration Possessive Love. Story content has not been altered.

I love this author's imagination, and she's a skilled storyteller for sure. This one just didn't really hit for me. It was entertaining, but if I'm reading fiction, then 99% of the time I'm reading for the romance, and that .......... well, I just didn't feel it. I skimmed a lot of the sex because as fitting as it was for their demonic nature, I'm just not that interested in blood play or pain kinks, amd regardless of the on-page heat, the chemistry between them felt very tell-not-show. I want to FEEL the MC's falling for each other, not just be told that they are. And here, I didn't. And don't even get me started on how much I hate reading dialogue written to reflect an accent, Marc 🧐 #soannoying #bestwaytotakemeoutofastory #reallywasntworkingforme

▪︎FAV QUOTES▪︎

■ "I reached him and tilted his head up with a curl of a talon under his chin. “Our touch can instill both pleasure and pain—”
Avi jerked backward.
“I was only going to demonstrate the pleasure part.” I dropped my hand in disappointment. “Though I do think ya enjoy a mix.”
He ducked his head, clearly not wanting to admit that."

■ '“Just because you're a lust demon, is sex all you think about?”
Said the half-human, half-demon male who I knew was also always thinking about it." 😏

👍I'm definitely going to read this again

exceptional storytelling

Rating: 5 🌈

Well, this made me exceptionally happy. In a collection about demons from hell finding a mate and a relationship, in whatever form that may take, I have a story where the characters are actually coming across as demonic. With a few minor exceptions. And hell’s no vacation spot.

Amanda Meuwissen’s tale of love and demons is an intriguing affair. I love it when a collection reacquaints me with an author I haven’t read in a while with outstanding results, and that’s what I found here.

Immediately the author gives us a compelling opening . It’s Avriel’s 21st birthday and he’s feeling a bit out of sorts, even for him. From beautifully detailed descriptions of the characters and their personalities and lives , the reader is intimately familiar with the situation as the story begins and understands the types of people involved. Avi is immediately real and grounded in his small group of friends and college town.

And when he dies, it’s gut wrenching. That’s not a spoiler. It’s in the blurb and how he changes into his true self. But are we still prepared for it? No.

Then there’s Marchosias, the demon imp, also known as Marc. He’s the other half of this incredibly complicated, emotional narrative. From the start, Marc has a surprising history and agenda that prompts a character development that’s both in keeping with his demonic tendencies and newfound sense of self worth. It’s an exceptional journey.

But it’s done in tandem with the changes brought forth by the death and rebirth of Avi’s demon nature. And the battles they face from the Princes of Hell.

Meuwissen was so clever in using the seven deadly sins as avatars for the Princes of Hell. How they manifested themselves in the earthly realm I’ll leave to the book as well as those formidable battles. Just outstanding on every level.

Even the other characters that support Avi and Marc are so good in their roles and depth of personality. The father who is just glimpsed until the later stages still has a strong sense of self. The cast is believable and grounded in emotion and real life, even given the paranormal nature of the situations.

Let’s get to the part where there’s pain, blood, suffering, and death, because yes, these are demons. There may be a beauty in their brutality and otherworldly physicality but they are definitely demons. It’s reflected in the evolving relationship between Avi and Marc, the conflicted nature of their roles as Avi changes and Marc becomes more aware of his own feelings. Such an emotional connection and excellent element of this story.

Avi and Marc have decisions to make if possible. That’s part of the amazing story and the author’s ability to create a great narrative. I won’t spoil it but will say this is my favorite of the collection. And I’m delighted to have rediscovered this author once more.

Grab this one up if paranormal fiction and romances are your wheelhouse.

I love Amanda's writing. It always has all the feels, diverse characters, sexy scenes, and some heartbreaking moments. It's like a perfect dish that just waits to be devoured.

The 'Son of the Arch Demon' doesn't disappoint. I was a little bit worried that it would be too close to a rom-com to my liking, but it actually never went there. While both POVs are hilarious to read, the weird humor that often comes in these types of stories was absent. Nothing made me cringe, and I deeply enjoyed how both MCs addressed us as readers.

I liked how romance progressed between Marc and Avi - starting from lust, but with so many moments showing how well they fit with each other. They clicked as humans, sharing their interests, helping each other grow, and having fun and pleasure with mundane things. They clicked as demons too, sinful and full of power, and when both sides found balance? it was just perfect.

This book made me think of another story from this author: 'The Bard and the Fairy Prince'. Both stories deal with heritage, the search for power beyond comprehension, wanting to change the world as well as one's destiny. Both of them toy with the idea of being (or becoming) a villain, and collecting power from outside to become The Ultimate King. And where 'The Bard and the Fairy Prince' failed, the 'Son of the Arch Demon' did amazingly. Both MCs make decisions that make sense and fight with their own selfish desires and the power that can consume them and make them lose everything they hold dear.

There were some plot twists and surprises, there was some kind of redemption arc, and there was love and possessiveness as promised on the cover. The 7 sins as Princes of Hell were a nice touch, making the story easy to follow without the need to add too many side characters that we would need to follow and remember their characteristics.

Why not give it 5 stars? Well, I have two small complaints.
First, I would prefer a slightly longer ending - I felt like the 'markings' and 'betrayal' needed more time on the page, as well as Avi's 'family' situation. Everything was mentioned and summarized, but it just left me feeling like too many things were left unspoken and just accepted in the respective POVs. I like to see characters not only suffering and mourning but also working through their problems, what can I say.
Secondly, the story used all already established tropes. It's something that most people will like, and I can safely recommend this book to everyone - both those new to the whole demon/antichrist romance and the ones who read every story in a similar setting; it's just that I personally wanted more. And yes, maybe it is greed :) on my part, but Amanda is one of my favorite authors and I always set the bar high, happy to dive into a new world and fall in love with new characters.

PS There is some dub-con in there. Light, I would say, and the character don't protest, but we not get clear consent and for some it may be something worth knowing before it happens on page.

I received the ARC from the author, and I'm leaving an honest and unbiased review.

did not vibe with it at all, which is surprising and disappointing since I’ve enjoyed this author often. There were so many weird/awkward grammatical choices and unusual syntax that I had to constantly reread sentences for them to make sense;
I didn’t feel any chemistry between the MCs; the side characters annoyed the shit out of me—especially having to read every single outfit the only girl character wore, and all I have are complaints about her (supposedly advocating for Avi but then constantly talking over him, making him feel even worse about not standing up for himself, her dressing like a stereotypical anime character every day, being told how perfect and brilliant she was, etc);
each demon form variation was overly described to where when something appeared/transformed I had to actively work on not skimming through what they looked like;
Marc’s Brit* accent didn’t sound like any kind of British in my head, everything he said/thought sounded like US southern to me (“yer” “ain’t” “ya”) *(other than “not posh” it wasn’t specified. idk, I watch a lot of BBC panel shows/British comedians and I couldn’t fit Marc’s accent into any of their voices, like maybe Rob Beckett would be my best guess but like Ron doesn’t say “yer” he says “you’re” so it doesn’t make sense (especially outside of dialogue) for “accented” words to be written phonetically when if the character was writing the words themselves, they’d spell it all correctly. On the other hand I on the whole struggle with reading accents, and by that I mean I hate it on principle because it nearly always ends up so overdone that I can’t concentrate on what the character says over trying to “read it right” in my head and when I’m frustrated while reading I usually end up quitting/skipping. didn’t in this case because I kept waiting for the book to get better/get used to the accent);
at 71% the POV changes in the middle of a chapter, in the middle of a fight, mid-paragraph. really pissed me off on top of everything else but I was already close (or so I thought) to the end

Like was this actually written by someone else? Did the editor sabotage it by changing things to make less sense/worse? Was this a draft that was accidentally published too early? It just feels like there’s a punchline that I’m missing with this. idk

Avi is ready to finish college and start his life. This last week he's been feeling weird and having the feeling that something is about to happen. Is it because his 21st birthday is around the corner? Meeting a sexy, new guy that seems to be interested in him is a pleasant surprise. Maybe a new beginning is coming. Now when he's getting ready to close the convenient store he works at trouble has come for him. Dying wasn't how he expected to spend his birthday.

Marc is a imp demon in disguise as a transfer student. He sidles up to Avi with the hope that he's found the one. He's going to help Avi come into his new self and take everything he can. He's not going to be a servant anymore. When he comes across Avi and his trouble, he shows him the changes to come.

Marc teach Avi defense and they together slowly get closer. As Avi defeats the demons Marc comes into the power he always wanted, but is it what he still wants.

This is a very good story. I loved the transformations Avi, Marc and Brent go through. They all change and evolve into better forms of themselves. There's the point where they all realize what they thought they wanted wasn't what they really wanted. They changed for the better. It was a rocky road but things came out for the better. I loved that Avi always had Eryn and Fry to support him. 😍 They loved him for who he was, not who he could be. I liked the twist with Avi's mom and dad. I liked where Avi and Marc end up. Avi and Marc have really good chemistry and the sexy times were hot!! 🔥 I'd like more in this world. I want more of Avi, Marc and the others. This book keep my attention from page one and I devoured it. Highly recommend it. 😃

Son of the Arch Demon was originally part of the multiauthor Possessive Love series. I missed the book the first time around and am glad I got the opportunity on the re-release.
On his twenty first birthday, Avi is stabbed in the neck and transforms to his demon half rather than dying. The son of an arch demon/human pairing, his destiny is to be the anti-Christ. If he survives. Marchosias, a minor demon, an imp, is an opportunist. He sees in Avi a chance to elevate his status. If he can keep Avi alive. There are seven princes of hell who would love to see Avi dead. So they send their avatars to defeat him.
The book starts off exciting, and ends on a high note. Both Avi and Marc change over the course of the book. Avi gains confidence and learns to embrace his demonic side. Marc seduces Avi like a cad, but ends up falling hard.
A quick read. A bit steamy. A lot of fun. Didn't much care for Avi's bestie, Eryn. A bit annoying and know it all. Except for Frye, Chi Alpha Sigma is filled with stereotypical entitled jerks. As secondaries, they were there. But I wouldn't call them overly supportive. Just filler.
In the end, Avi has to decide how much of his humanity he's willing to give up in the search for power.
Not my favorite from this author. But it is a solid read.
I received an advanced copy of this re-release and this is my review.

Avriel (Avi) had no idea just how transformational his twenty-first birthday would be when he died and was resurrected as a half-demon who was prophesied to become the Antichrist and take over the world. All he wanted was to survive graduation, become an artist and have Marc be anything other than a lust demon hoping to guide him. Marchosias (Marc) found a thin spot in the veil and lept through awaiting his awakening and will do whatever it takes so that he can stop being a lesser demon anymore.

I enjoyed this story although Avi seemed to get over Marc's deception a lot quicker than I would have thought. Some of it was interesting with the different demons and the battles (as well as their physical traits). I loved the identity of Avi's father and how supportive he was. I did think that Avi was a little strange and shallow at times whereas Marc was just selfish and thought mostly only of himself. Easy to read, feel and understand. This is an MM story with mature content.

“Son of the Arch Demon” is a nice standalone. The characters are great and the world-building is very interesting. I particularly liked Marc, he’s cunning and ambitious but at the same time, he’s not faking his affection for Avi. I also appreciate that he’s not a powerful demon, it changes from other stories where all the main characters must be powerful. Avi isn’t the typical character as well. I enjoyed the chemistry between them and I love Avi’s possessiveness toward Marc. This book was darker than some of Amanda’s previous work but I think it added even more intensity and gave a convincing element to this well-written world-building. I loved it, the action, the plot and the secrets. And the surprise: it was violent sometimes, even a little scary and very steamy. The book seems a little too short for me because I think that Avi’s transition to become king of Hell happened very fast and a bit brutally, apart from that, it is very good standalone.

What a fun and fabulous premise! College student Avi is living his life trying to graduate and looking for to his future when on his twenty first birthday, he takes his true for as the Antichrist. Fellow student and secret lust demon, Marc is there to help- or to siphon Avi’s power for his own. This was a fun and quick read, I also appreciated that the author let the demons be appropriately dark. There is an impressive amount of plot and world building that happens despite the short pages count. A couple of things I didn’t love were Marc’s British accent was very distracting and I found Eryn rather annoying as a character. That being said, I enjoyed this a bunch- it has some twists, great spice, and a few genuine surprises along the way. Fun and original!

Great Story but Darker Than Some of the Others in the Series

I enjoyed both the story and the characters in this book. There was excellent character development and a unique look into what makes us human by framing it against what makes a demon a demon. It was very cleverly written with a solid plot. I did find it more graphically violent and darker than some of the previous books in this collection (which I don’t mind-this is more of a trigger warning). If you are looking for the softer demons like in some of the other novels then you may want to skip this one. But if you are ready to embrace the darker side of demons and don’t mind some violence then buckle up for a literary ride.

Son of the Arch Demon by Amanda Meuwissen
Possessive Love, multi-author series

What do you do when on your 21st birthday you die and are then resurrected as a half-demon meant to take over the world and you have an imp demon masquerading as a fellow college student ready to to serve you in all ways??

This is the situation Avi finds himself in on his bday. This story was full of interesting characters, intriguing world building and lots of of twists and turns to get the that HEA! It’s a little darker than some of the other books in this wonderful multi-author series but I really liked it.

If you like to read about:

👿 Resurrected demons
👿 Demonic college students
👿 Prophetic world domination
👿 Morally grey MC’s
👿 High heat

Then this book is for you!

Loved it. Avi is turning 21 and is going to college and working at a shop near school. One night he was taking out the garbage when he was attacked by 3 men. When the men started looking at him scared, he didn’t know what was happening to him. When he meets Marc, after eviscerating the men, he ran scared back to his house. This is the start of the story of how Marc explained that Avi was the son of an arch demon and that he would rule hell. As the story continued, Avi had to go up against other arch demons who got stronger as they showed up. I loved this action, heat filled book with how Avi and Marc got together and helped each other defeat the others. Cannot wait to read more from this author.

Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review.  Avi birthday was going to be more memorable then he could ever had wanted, after all when a hilariously funny but overwhelmingly naughty Demon comes into his nerdy world. The only problem here for Avi was Marc just here for him as the power boost of him being a king?  With Avi's little human friends finding out the truth was a chance game, but how would dear old dad feel.
Marc was totally on board with riding Avi's tail all the way to the top, only something had changed dramatically as to the whole world domination thinking.

If you want to know what happens when a prophesied Antichrist who *really* doesn’t want the job’s destiny collides with a lesser demon who *really* wants him to have it (and to change his position along the way)— and you want that journey to have heat and humor and unexpected moments galore— then this story is a good fit for you. I love the depth of these characters, the way the stakes can feel ridiculously epic and yet somehow relatable, and the way Marc in particular makes moral ambiguity look good. Chemistry and secrets and plot twists for the win— well worth a read. 4.5 stars.

Whoa.

That was a RIDE.

This book was intense. It was extremely violent and the smut was wild. The lines between action scene and sex scene were blurry and there was blood absolutely EVERYWHERE at some point. It doesn't shy away from the idea that this is a romance between demons who really would be right at home in a horror movie.

Certain aspects of this book definitely pushed my limits.

The romance itself was great and actually pretty interesting. The seduction for personal gain premise isn't one I've read much of at all before and I liked how it ended.

This book stood out to me so much that I couldn't not give it 5 stars.

Avi, a geeky business major and talented artist meets a new guy in class. He's Marc, a British guy and super hot and sexy. He is also a real life demon and what's worse, Avi becomes one on his 21st birthday. But worst of all, Avi is supposed to rule Hell and start an Apocalypse. You know, your average 21st birthday, a beer and a life changing world event. Marc is here to help him, guide him and give him help of the carnal nature to help him fight other demons. It's complicated, descriptive and reminds me of a video game but really holds your interest. I received a copy of this book through Booksprout and this is my voluntary opinion.

Avi & Marc
This book was impressively different than I had generally been expecting. Obviously, the blurb for the book explained Avi's transformation, and Marc's influences, but the dynamics between the characters, especially the MCs with the additional--human--side characters were an addition that added real depth to the story and improved or shifted the viewpoint and my opinion about the MCs. The story is still ultimately a romance and that's played very well, and the drama that's included within that romance was really interesting to follow.

Avi & Marc's relationship had many ups and downs, but it was pretty easy to see where the two would match versus clash. And with any dramatic romance, they had their fair share of lying and/or miscommunication. It can be hair-pulling at times, but the story plays out between the two MCs very well.

Amanda does paranormal characters so well, I am in awe each time I read something new (to me). The very demon-ness of the story was fascinating and I loved all the twists and turns within the action and the plot. I loved the turn of events with 'envy', but can't say I was too incredibly surprised.

I received an authorized copy of this story and am volunteering my honest review.

Avi meets Marc in college and Marc is there when Avi starts to come into his demon tendencies. He has to fight 6 of the deadly sins to take his place as king of the underworld.
An enjoyable story if a little long.

On a separate note, if a character is from a certain place, tell the reader and then write the dialogue in regular english or american english. In this example Marc was english and the author wrote in the way she thought english people spoke. At one point it got so on my nerves, I nearly dnf'd.

I loved this book! Thrilling and captivating.
I absolutely can imagine to see this book as an anime movie with its very detailled descripted characters and action scenes, but definitely for adults only. This book is dark but written with a healthy dose of humor and pulls the reader in a different world within a totally normal one. Of course a bit heat is not missing, but it is not for the soft hearted.
The book could have ended in so many different ways, so it kept me in its spell until the end. If you like dark and rough romance, then this is a must-read for you.

I loved it!

I loved Son of the Arch Demon by Amanda Meuwissen. I loved Avi and Marc's story. I loved how they met and how they had to defeat the seven deadly sins, aka the princes of hell, and how Avi would eventually be able to figure out which prince he was out of. I especially loved that twist. I also loved how Avi's personality and demon body evolved as he absorbed each avatar. I also loved Avi's best friend, her boyfriend, and Avi's dad.

I read this book using the Kindle unlimited app.

I am so happy that an author in this series took the deadly sins route and nailed it beautifully. Avi is unknowing to him half demon, and on his 21st birthday, he is born again as that to come into his true power. Marc is a lower level demon with dreams of becoming more, so he befriends Avi to help him defeat a minion of each deadly sin. These character all wear gray hats not quite good, not quite bad, and that's how they should be. They're demons, after all.
This tale is full of the power struggle to become the true king of Hell, with epic heated scenes for those of you who love high heat stories. Amanda wove the perfect tale in acceptance and being true to yourself even if that's not always so good.
With each battle, the lines are more drawn, the heat raises, and the secrets become harder to bear. In the end both must choose is the other worthnit after all they have been through.

Amanda is such a good story teller. This story is so unique and keeps you interested in what’s to come. There are a couple of twists that you don’t see coming, although the biggest is a train wreck that you can see from a mile away and it’s written that way and there’s no escaping it. I have read a couple of the books from the Possessive Love Series and this is definitely my favorite.

Son of the Arch Demon is the story of Avriel who dies and becomes a half demon and Marchosias a lesser demon. I love how this book pulled me in from knowing from the blurb that Avi dies but still not expecting it. I loved that this was like real demons and not the romcom kind. Amanda Meuwissen did an amazing job with the characters and world building in this book. I loved all the connection between Marc and Avi. I would definitely recommend this book.

Avriel has spent his whole life hiding himself very much in the background. He is sweet and kind, but his 21st birthday discovers that he is potentially the strongest demon ever. Marc is an imp hoping to tag along behind Avi to gain more power. As the challenges follow, Marc develops more "good" human characters and becomes more lovable, but in the meantime, Avi goes in the other direction. I would have preferred a bit longer ending to have more of the MCs in HEA.

Avi got the surprise of his life on his birthday. His life is turned upside down by a super hot demon and their mission.

This book was all kinds of crazy and hot and I really enjoyed it. There were a few surprises along the way which definitely shook things up.

I always love Amanda’s books because you never know where she will take you. This was no different. It was one wild dark ride. In a nutshell: What happens when a lower demon happens upon the anti christ and then finds out they don’t want to be it. Fall in love and protect them of course. Love the world building and characters. Just read it, you’ll love it.

This was a quick and easy read. The chemistry between Avi and Marc was 🔥🔥🔥. Some of the plot points were a little hard to follow and felt rushed at times to try and fit everything in in 164 pages. I'm going back to read all the books in this series now because I'm intrigued.

This story is as sweet as the other books I've read in the series. It also has a really cool action adventure quest style storyline going on that is extremely engaging. This a tale of a guy whose felt invisible his whole life coming into his own and then grappling with still trying to hold onto to who he is at his core and the demon whole loves him. Definitely read this book ASAP.
