A cold-blooded murder. A Warrior seeking revenge. A Healer with a dark secret. Gods who work their own agenda. And an innocent woman caught in a web of lies, deceit, and pain. Explore the world of Quiliaris, a world where power and elemental magic rules, and follow Onyx, spy master of the Hashisins’ Guild and one of the best Warriors in Quiliaris, on his hunt for his brother’s murderer.

Emerald Fire, the prequel novella to Soul of Fire (Chronicles of Quiliaris #1), focuses on the time after the Fire King’s death and Onyx’s hunt for the Traitor. After months of searching for a lead, it’s Serabi, trusted friend and best Healer of her generation, who points him in the right direction by revealing a secret so vile that even the seasoned Warrior is troubled by it. Drowning in guilt for not being able to save his brother, he confronts his nemesis…only to suffer defeat. Thanks to Nia, Chief Mistress of Ter Sentra’s Hareem, he realizes that redemption is not to be found in death but in life. And in the arms of the woman that was able to reach his soul even in his darkest hours.

I've never really given fantasy a change, but after reading the description for the book it sounded like something I could get into.

I am NOT disappointed!

The Author managed to challenge my mind, making me feel like I was a part of the world she had created, I've never read anything like it.

If I had to describe the book in one word it would be EPIC.

The best thing is, this is only the novella, I can't imagine how brilliant the main book, Soul Of Fire, is going to be.

I would recommend this to anyone who has an open mind and loves to be engulfed into a good story.

Psychocat Reads Review of EMERALD FIRE by Caris McRae

(I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

I'd never heard of this book until an email showed up one day from Caris McRae. Funny enough, she stumbled across the Psychocat Reads Reviews courtesy of a picture of the Psychocat herself in a Google search.

The Book As Part of a Series: As a novella length prequel to the first book, SOUL OF FIRE, I decided to go ahead and read EMERALD FIRE first. It appears to start laying the groundwork for what promises to be an interesting story and world. Not having read the first book yet, I suspect we'll see more of the main characters from this one in some capacity, but that this will have also provided some of the backstory.

The Characters: There are three primary characters in EMERALD FIRE. The females, Nia and Serabi, are in vastly different positions in society, but are also very good friends. They are both fiesty, rather mouthy, opinionated, but also loyal. I loved them!

Onyx in one heck of a bad ass, but like all good characters there is much more to him. He is struggling to overcome some serious history. In some ways he reminds me of Wolverine - a high compliment in my book.

The Relationships: There is intrigue and tension between Nia and Onyx from he start. Though neither of them make it particularly easy on the other when it comes to getting to know each other. Given the strong fantasy elements at play in the story, you just know there's more to the tension there than meets the eye.

In other relationship news, I loved how both of them had strong ties to Serabi. You can readily see how the healer provides some level of balance to both of their personalities, albeit as fiesty is she is that's saying something.

World Building: While the world of the Chronicles of Quiliaris is distinct, I also found it easy to follow and understand. By using the various elements (earth, wind, water, and fire) as a basis for key parts of the world, it is easy to start putting things together.

Jen's Final Rating: 4 STARS! EMERALD FIRE is a great kick off for what promises to be a captivating series. I enjoyed Caris McRae's characters and story telling abilities. There were several minor editing issues that could be cleaned up, but they don't detract from the story enough to prevent my recommending it to those that enjoy fantasy.

Psychocat's Final Rating: She's packing her bags to go join the Hashisin to hunt down a particularly power hungry, sadistic bad guy. Psychocat may love a bit of violence and bad-assery, but even she has a limit.
