To write a book about Jesus is a challenging task; to live a life like Jesus’ is more challenging still. Though not primarily a work of theology or of spirituality, this popular history intends to help the words and deeds of Jesus come alive for contemporary readers. In Jesus’ day, he was a polarizing figure; one was either for him or against him. Today, even many who are familiar with the story of Jesus are unmoved. There are a number of reasons for this, but one of them is that we have forgotten the history of which Jesus came to be part; and we have also forgotten how we fit in. When God acted in Jesus, he acted in history, and that history came with particular cultures, presuppositions, and memories of its own. Without an understanding of these things, Jesus’ polarizing words and deeds become blunted because their backdrop has been removed.

A great walk-through of the the history, customs and traditional Jewish life at the time of Jesus. It's not to in-depth of a history lesson, but it will help new Christians and those just beginning to study the life of Christ understand what was happening and why the bible is written the way it is. It is a great refresher for those of us who have some knowledge of the Gospels.
The one downfall is the Catholic tilt this book takes when referring to Mary, the mother of Jesus, and their traditional belief of her remaining a virgin for the rest of her life. There are great references to the other texts and some of the original languages (Greek and Hebrew), yet this part was not detailed when referencing Christ's brothers and sisters, instead relying on the Catholic church's take on the matter. The rest of the book remains denominational neutral.
This book starts at a time before Jesus was born and ends with His greates Sermon. The in-depth structure of the book and the way the authors explained what the world was going through at that time helped me to understand certain aspects of the politics at that time.
It also helped me understand certain relationships that are not clear in the bible. Why the Romans has so much power in some areas on so little in others. It was magnificantly written.
I am excited to read the second book by these authors.
This book contained some good historical items that were informative for me --- I wish the nuns and brothers taught me more about the historical context of this time period!
Not bad. A bit brief. I was expecting this book to be a bit "meatier." Also, written from a Catholic standpoint. That wasn't a big deal just did not know that when i began the book.
A Comprehensive and Engaging Exploration of Jesus' Life
"The Life and Times of Jesus: From His Earthly Beginnings to the Sermon on the Mount" by Michael J. Ruszala and Wyatt North is a meticulously researched and engagingly written account of Jesus' life, from his birth to the Sermon on the Mount.
This book is the first installment in a series that delves into the life and times of Jesus, providing a rich and detailed context for understanding the historical and cultural backdrop of his ministry. The authors' thorough research and expertise shine through on every page, making this book an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of Jesus' life and teachings.
One of the strengths of this book is its ability to balance historical accuracy with engaging narrative. The authors bring the ancient world to life, transporting readers to the dusty streets of Nazareth, the bustling markets of Jerusalem, and the serene landscapes of the Galilee.
The book's attention to detail is impressive, covering everything from the political and social climate of 1st-century Palestine to the intricacies of Jewish law and tradition. The authors also explore the personal dimensions of Jesus' life, including his relationships with his family, friends, and disciples.
Throughout the book, Ruszala and North demonstrate a deep respect for the biblical text, while also acknowledging the complexities and nuances of historical interpretation. Their writing is clear, concise, and accessible, making this book an excellent choice for readers from diverse backgrounds and levels of expertise.
Overall, "The Life and Times of Jesus" is a superb achievement that will captivate readers interested in history, theology, and biblical studies. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a richer understanding of Jesus' life and teachings, and I eagerly anticipate the next installment in this series.
This was a very excellent covering of the love and times of Jesus. As much as I have read the Bible and studied His life, I am always looking to read more from scholars who have more to say, more context on Jess, His life and tmes. I enjoyed reading this so much and got a better understanding of the politics of the day. And it was written in an interesting easy to read way.
This author effectively ties the Biblical events of Jesus early life to the history of the time. Using outside sources and the Biblical gospel narratives, he paints a picture of the times in which Jesus lived and the places he frequented. This is a great summary of those early years, enriching the narrative given to us in Scripture.
Great read on Jesus Christ's life up to the start of His public ministry
This is a great book on Jesus' early life, although in a somewhat condensed matter. Good references to bible verses to follow up with the subject matter. Looking forward to the next volume.
Jesus 101 from a mostly Catholic point of view. But a good read and review for those who haven’t opened their Bibles lately. I would recommend the book, especially since there seem to be so many books attacking Christianity these days.
Jesus Christ 's ministry is well known. But something not to familiar is the life style of those around him. This is a great read to dive into the daily life of people, disciples, and Jesus back then.
Interesting story of the life and times of Jesus. I am just beginning my journey learning about Jesus and Christianity and this was a great place to start. I am always interested in history and this book, while not an in-depth history provided clarity. Well worth reading.
Interesting the habits of that time. Hard to follow if you are not familiar with the Bible. The story jumps back and forward. For me it was a good read.
Interesting and informative , enjoyed learning the historical background of the time Jesus was preaching. The book uses written history to prove Jesus existence.
Interesting background to the Gospels but I have reservations
Overall, interesting background attempting to explain the historical context of the Gospels. A short, easy read (under an hour) so consider this in the purchase price: I had the Kindle Unlimited version.
I have two major reservations:
* Few source references are given, other than to the Bible. * Nine references from Ratzinger (Pope Benedict) as at Jan 2022 tainted by German investigation of his protection for abusive priests. (The book was published in 2014.)
The Life and Times Series of books continue to be good primers introducing newcomers to the context of biblical characters and theological figures lives. While a solid read with a lot of good information it's not something that a person with a lot of theological background would want to invest in. However, it could be an excellent tool for a Bible study or class on the life and world of Jesus.
Written in a manner for anyone that reads the bible can understand without a seminary education. Well worth reading regardless of spiritual denomination.
