Searching for Spice, Megan DiMarias debut novel, released April 2008, and her second novel, Out of Her Hands, is scheduled to be out in October 2008. When shes not tapping out another story on her computer, she loves to spend time with her husband and three adult children in the beautiful Rocky Mountain state of Colorado"
It literally took me forever to finish this book. I think the title itself was like bait. I'd say this book was PG at best. Once done I deposited it in the trash.
Other reviewers call this Mom-Lit but I'd call it Christian Women's Fiction. It's about REALISTIC LOVE, not romantic fantasy. I love both kinds of stories, but you just don't find enough of the realistic love stories. I loved to see the more mature love of a couple married for 25 years - still lighting each other's fires even as they work through stress in their family and even disappointment with each other.
The writing is very high quality, like Kristen Billerbeck but with more substance. Great characters that will warm your heart and make you laugh, coupled with beautiful descriptions. Genuinely captures the emotions of mothers, wives, and even teenage daughters. I especially liked how the author handled the tricky balance for women between work, family and friends. Linda works in a photography studio and it was a great setting. Dynamics between her boss, co-workers and clients were fascinating - and surprising! (hint hint)
The plot starts out a little fluffy (that might just be me. I like more dramatic beginnings.) But the great descriptions kept me going. By one fourth of the way in, the drama gets stronger with every page and by the end words are almost singing off the page.
Tell your friends about this book! Can't wait to read the next one.
I enjoyed reading this book that my friend and local author, Megan DiMaria, wrote. As suspected, Megan's sense of humor came through in the book, although there were some very serious moments in the book as well. We enjoyed discussing this book and some of its themes at our book club, especially the theme of the choices parents have and make when a child has made a poor choice.
If you can get past some of the cheesy writing, this is a fun read. It's Christian Fiction, so I appreciated the spiritual elements. It's a fun story about a middle-aged woman who's trying to add some romance to her marriage. But the plot thickens as she's faced with other challenges within her family that test her faith in God, eventually proving to her the strength of her family and marriage.
Every woman knows what Linda Revere is going through which is what makes Searching for Spice so appealing. It's refreshing to read about such a realistic relationship and encouraging because if Linda can find spice so can we!
Not a book I would normally choose. The author lives in my hometown not far from my neighborhood and there are references to local spots. The main character I found to be judgmental and irritating. I didn't feel that I had anything in common with her at all.
This book was amazing! Shows a family and their strength with God and how they work through the situations they go through while the mother is trying to get her husband to be more romantic.
