He’d never considered staying in the military past when he was due to be discharged, but now that he had walked away and was trying to rebuild his life, he was wishing he was back in uniform. No one wanted to hire vets, and his skills were somewhat specific. Deciding to take things into his own hands, he opens a Private Investigation business and prays that this will be the answer.
Becca McDermott just wants her crazy life to calm down.
As a McDermott, she knows that crazy is in their genes, but she’s really getting fed up. After her sister enthusiastically decides to become a stripper (with her parents blessing,) and her mother comes out as a closet bi-sexual who is ready to “explore a little,” Becca doesn’t know how to also deal with her insane brother, who has seemingly gone AWOL from the navy after a trip to see her. She knows she needs to find him and talk him down, but she has no idea where to start.
Becca’s so much more than John can handle.
After searching on the internet for a PI, Becca pays John a visit and begs him to track down her brother. John wants to take the job, but there’s one problem--Becca is insisting on coming along for the ride. After she makes him an offer he can’t refuse, they set out to find her missing brother. But spending so much time together is starting to affect them both, and they can’t ignore the sexual tension growing between them. As their passion explodes and they try to find her brother, they might also find something no one expected.
1.5 stars? I don't know. There was a lot of potential. I mean, tons of it, but the execution was lacking. The first issue and biggest is the writing style. Present tense, flipping back and forth between characters' inner dialogue which sounded...odd at the very least. Becca's inner dialogue: "Fuck! We are just getting started and I'm already working up to an orgasm. John is definitely learning how to push my buttons."
"I like John and he seems to embody all the qualities I like. He's quiet, confident, and caring. Most of all, he's stable. While he is no hunk, he is not a bad-looking guy and he's better looking than a lot of guys I've gone out with. But this is a working relationship and I shouldn't feel this type of pull. First, I need to find Ian. Then, I can think about something other than a working relationship with Mr. John Malcolm."
See? Just odd to have to read their thoughts so blatantly like that, It could have been presented in a much different way and I would have liked it better.
Having said that, the characters themselves were likable enough. Becca is searching for her brother, Ian. (now I will say in addition to the many MANY other things wrong with her family, they did not seem the least bit concerned that her brother was missing. And for having a son in the military they did not seem to know jack shit about the military...guess they were too busy stripping and throwing their swinger parties to learn anything about the life of their child.) John was likable as well, although he said he "quit" the marines, which one does not do but whatever. He is a marine that tried his hand at other things and ended up opening a PI firm. I liked that he didn't particularly care for the jobs he was taking, the way he felt about the sneaking and the cheating spouses made him more likable, unfortunately, I felt the same way about his inner dialogue as I did about Becca's. So much about a character can be revealed in so many other ways than just taking up paragraph after paragraph of italicized "thoughts".
But I digress. The sex scenes...this is where Becca was least likable. I mean, she just had her fourth orgasm for pete's sake, why does she get to scream at him "don't stop! don't stop until I come"....I felt badly for poor John. I mean, in the end, he did give her that 5th orgasm so yay him! Why? Why 5 orgasms?! Oh! and let's not go there with the condom thing.
Anyhoo...the story took some strange twists, you know with the whole strippers and party boat thing.
Like I said, I feel it had a lot of potential, but the writing style left something to be desired.
Not very well executed. The idea was intriguing but it didn't come off. It's also written in present tense which is distracting.
Becca hires John to look for her missing Navy brother Ian, Neither one of them is wowed by the other. Becca's first impression of John:
"She didn’t expect Tom Selleck or pictures with presidents, but John simply seems like an average guy. No rugged good looks. No dark wavy hair. No buff body. Nothing."
John on Becca "She's pretty in a girl-next-door sort of way"
Not exacting the sexually chemistry I look for in a book that claims to be erotic in the title.
Even so, the story just plods along well past the 1/3 mark before anything happens between them. There is sex and all the explicit words and acts but there is no spark or excitement. Becca likes to throw out f-bombs like crazy then waffles between being demure. She also "snickers" and "snarls" ugh. Reminds me Snidely Whiplashes dog.
John is a little wimpy too at one point during sex he describes it as wrestling a python when she clamps her legs around his head and he has difficulty changing position. Not real sexy in my opinion.
I enjoyed this book...it was a little shorter and quicker action then I was expecting. It was nice to see what John and Becca both were thinking when different events were going on but at time their point of views seemed to run together. While it was a good read some parts seemed to good to be true...a lot seemed to happen that you wouldn't expect to happen. It would have been nice to have a little bit more background information about both John and Becca and for their story/time together to last a little longer.
Written nicely. Fast pace but didn't jump so far ahead that you feel like there was big gaps in the story. Liked how the main male character was very down to earth
