In a former life, H M Clarke has been a Console Operator, an ICT Project Manager, Public Servant, Paper Shuffler and an Accountant (the last being the most exciting.)
She attended Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia, where she studied for a Bachelor of Science (Chem), and also picked up a Diploma in Project Management while working for the South Australian Department of Justice.
In her spare time, she likes to lay on the couch and watch TV, garden, draw, read, and tell ALL her family what wonderful human beings they are.
She keeps threatening to go out and get a real job (Cheesecake Test Taster sounds good) and intends to retire somewhere warm and dry - like the middle of the Simpson Desert. For the time being however, she lives in Ohio and dreams about being warm...
She is also a bit of a video game nerd and, is into Star Trek, Midsomer Murders and Harry Potter, and she absolutely adores the TV show Almost Human
I’ve just finished reading my second book by H.M. Clarke and her range is pretty stunning. I read The Kalarthri first, book 1 of The Way to Freedom series, which was a fantasy suitable for any age. The Enclave is every bit as intriguing and imaginative, but worlds apart. To begin with, I would recommend this for an older audience because of the mild violence and the more sophisticated storyline.
The Enclave is a Sci-Fi space adventure with lots of action and intrigue. The main characters are all very well written and likable, which adds so many dimensions for me. Commander Katherine Kirk is one of those awesome kick-ass heroines you love to read about. She also shows a vulnerability at times that makes her even more worthy of the title of heroine. She has not had an easy time, and she’s not looking for one. What she wants is to make the world a safer place.
If you’ve read Christine Feehan’s GhostWalker series, you will be familiar with some of the scientific experimentation going on in one of the enclaves Katherine works so diligently to defend.
So now, I’m waiting patiently for another book from this series.
The book has enough pace, plot, characterisation, and action to be interesting.
However, the frequent switch between past tense and present tense had me going aargh almost every three paragraphs. At times, I had to grit my teeth and continue. The story is worth it, but to keep tripping over sentences in the wrong tense is really really irritating.
I really enjoyed this book! Fantastic! I only wish the next book was out so I could start straight away on it! From the beginning you are gripped and it doesnt let you rest till the last few lines and even then an anxiousness is there.
I loved this story and can't wait for more in the series! I'm a complete sucker for lots of action and well developed characters. This book had both, not to mention a good story line. In subsequent books I do hope to find out more about the back story of the protagonist. Some things in this regard were not as well explained (how did the heroine end up originally being captured by the bad guys?) I loved the team feel of Katherine's whole group and the military side of things was well done, thank goodness! One of my big pet peeves is military science fiction where military personnel do not act like military personnel. There were quite a few editing issues with wrong words being used (through instead of thorough, to instead of too, etc...) but for me the story was compelling enough to make me overlook those. I am really looking forward to reading the next one in the series!
The Enclave is an excellent sci-fi novel. It is a story of vengeance that takes place in the future, but it touches upon a very sensitive and current problem: the issues raised by the treatment of asylum seekers and refugees. The book is very well written, the characters are well defined and the pace of the book is fast and loaded with tension. I really enjoyed The Enclave and I would recommend this book to anyone who likes an action packed story with an excellent plot.
