I'm a huge fan of Matt's work, I always think I know what I'm getting into, but I'm usually not even close. And I love that, because it shows that Matt has the ability to take you anywhere with his writing.
Twists, turns, blood, gore, insanity, brutality and general fuckedupness are usually the order of the day, but exactly how that will be presented is always a brilliant revelation! If somewhat disturbing! 😉

When Thomas finds a random blank vhs tape in a recent haul, his curiosity gets the better of him, and when he lays eyes on the star of the movie, his life quickly spirals into an unhealthy obsession. The movie itself becomes a truly immersive experience for him too.

People are into all sorts of weird stuff when it comes to sexy time, and this is insanely disturbing. This doesn't just take it to the next level, it exceeds that and hits the absolute peak of depravity!

A really gripping page turner.
Fever dream like, taking a weird, chilling, sinister turn that I didn't expect.
Filled with tense anticipation and creepy Clive Barker vibes, this is another smash hit from Matt!

For reasons I can’t begin to fathom, there is a market for old VHS tapes. This is a real life phenomena. Collectors and people who just have an affinity for old media actively seek out VHS copies of their favorite movies of the VHS era. I remember seeing an old acquaintance looking for (and later trying to sell) old movies. I live in south Texas, where there is no guarantee that old heat sensitive media would still work, so this never made sense to me. I would never buy VHS at a thrift store because there’s no way of knowing whether it was stored properly.

SexTape is the story of one such collector/reseller. Thomas likes to buy boxes of random VHS tapes at garage sales and thrift stores hoping to find treasures. Even if he doesn’t find something valuable, he still manages to flip almost everything. Every once in a while he finds an unlabeled tape in the box. It’s usually home movies. A sex tape, if he’s lucky. There’s a market for amateur porn. One day, he takes home a box of tapes and finds an unmarked one that will change his life. It is a sex tape, but it’s unlike anything he’d ever seen before. He becomes obsessed with the tape, watching it repeatedly examining all the details. And masturbating, because it’s a sex tape. But he’s disgusted with himself because it’s dark and depraved. The girl might be underage, and the things she does turns a simple sex tape into a gruesome snuff film.

Thomas destroys the tape, thinking that’ll be the end of his unhealthy fixation. But then he starts thinking he’s seeing the girl in public. Is he imagining it or is it really her? When he buys another box and finds another unmarked tape with the same type of content starring the same girl, he realizes there’s something much bigger than he realizes going on. And there’s no going back.

I am a reader with simple needs. When Matthew Vaughn says he has a new story coming out, I read it with gusto. He writes disgusting and bizarre situations that set my imagination ablaze. Vaughn is really showing his range here. You probably know him from his more extreme titles like Bowery, House Call, or The Sexorcist, but it’s becoming clear that he is not a one trick splatter pony.

Kafka meets Ed Lee! This was a delightfully creepy story, taking the "cursed VHS tape" theme to gory and bizarre extremes. It's written cinematically, with clear descriptions of what's happening; said clarity, however, contrasts wonderfully with the main character's confusion about what's really going on. As a reader, this is exactly what I want from this type of story. Highly recommended!

Still not 100% sure what I just read. A VHS collector / seller stumbles onto a “cursed” snuff film. Bizarre and unexplained things start to turn happen and turn into an obsession.

I’ve never really seen something like this come out of Vaughn. The man is ever evolving. It’s dark, strange, well done and most of all enjoyable. Perverse Twilight Zone vibes.

SexTape by Matthew Vaughn

I make it no secret. I love Vaughn's work. I have read everything and have yet to be disappointed. Once again, Vaughn delivers another winner.

Good old VHS tapes. A blast from the past and what pays the bills for Thomas. Thomas buys and sells VHS tapes via the internet. He purchases a collection of videotapes, and among them he discovers a tape with no label.

Birthday party or snuff film? Porn perhaps?

What he observes on the tape leads him on a journey that gradually dominates his every thought.

I love a tale where you take a regular character and then put them in extraordinary circumstances. This is a tale that deviates from what you typically expect from Vaughn, and this is a good thing. Easily one of his best works to date.

Don't miss out. Check it out!

When i finished this, i couldn't rate it any other way.
This story had me just as freaking frantic as Thomas, and I'm not the one with the "problem" .
Then he stumbles across a tape in a box, that ruins him worse then he thought he could have been, he becomes so obsessed it takes over ever moment, so he tries to get rid of it.
And like any true addiction, its not always so easy to just kick a habit, and this one starts coming back in real life, or is it just in his broken mind?

Does he see the girl from the video everywhere or is this a guilty heart weighing on him, for his obsession, this dark one he gets so much weird joy from ?

This was dark and crazy and i am glad i pre ordered it , go buy this now.

This book hooked me from the start had been confused and trying to figure what was happening. There was plenty of gore and gruesome scenes but it was much more. I've seen this being described as being Kafkaesque and I would have to agree with that. A challenging read that I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.
