Now you see a murder, now you don’t…

The Golden Age of Hollywood, 1938. It's the annual Awards Banquet at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub, and Vivian Steele can’t wait for the star-studded event. She’s attending with her best friend, Carole Lombard, and several acclaimed actresses will be wearing her fashion designs. What she doesn’t expect is for the night to turn deadly.

During the awards ceremony, Carole finds a murdered actress in the restroom and quickly alerts the staff, yet they can’t find a body. An hour later, another guest screams bloody murder that an actor drowned in the pool outside. Again, the body disappears.

While the guests have a good laugh, Vivian is convinced the murders took place and reluctantly asks Preston Stone, Hollywood’s notorious playboy, for his help in proving her suspicions.

Together, they uncover a sinister killer who has mastered the art of illusion and set his sights on two Oscar-winning stars. Can Vivian and Preston stop him in time and without revealing their well-kept secrets?

A Bloody Banquet is a nice addition to the Stone & Steel Mysteries series. The characters are likable and well-developed with a great working relationship when it comes to solving mysteries. The Hollywood setting makes for interesting interactions with well known actors during the Golden Age of 1938. The mystery was unusual and intriguing. I really like Vivian and Preston as well as the secondary characters and look forward to the third of the series. Mild language.
I received a copy for the purpose of an honest review. These are my thoughts.

Bloody banquet indeed. Two dead bodies, but when help arrived they were gone. How is that possible? When the deceased bodies finally appear, Vivian and Preston have suspicions. Despite Vivian’s sour feelings about Preston, it can’t be denied that they work well together. I like the cat and mouse game they play.

This is a clever mystery of optical illusions. Set in glamorous Golden Age Hollywood with the famous Clark Gable and Carole Lombard. Be prepared for extravagance and red herrings. It’s a delight to read book two in the Stone and Steele series. Oh, did I mention dogs? Boris and Bella are back! Highly recommended for Golden Age nostalgia and cozy fans.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Gail Meath for an early copy.

ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUS!!! I have to say, I LOVE Gail Meath's books! A Bloody Banquet does not disappoint. One aspect of Meath's writing that I love the most is that every storyline is central to the plot. There are never any dead ends and the characters all have a meaningful role. Plus, I love that there is always a tidbit of information that leaves you wanting to know more, in this case about Vivian's past.

A Bloody Banquet is exquisite! I feel like I'm transported back to 1938 when I'm reading it. Whether you're reading the Stone & Steele series or the Jax Diamond series, you feel as though you are there with them. Meath's ability to bring Carole Lombard, Clark Gable, Myrna Loy, Bette Davis, and other old Hollywood stars to life amazes me. I have been a fan of old Hollywood for the longest time, I became hooked on reading after devouring biographies on Carole and Clark. It is absolutely fascinating to me that Meath can bring them to life, embracing their personalities, and engulf them in her storyline. I am blown away by the portrayal of Carole Lombard because it is completely accurate to everything I have ever read or seen about her. It is the same with the others, but with Carole being one of the main characters, she stands out more to me.

The characters in this series are delightful. Vivian embodies the quintessential 1930's woman. She is bouncing back from her husband's death, is running her business successfully, and loves spending time with Carole and Bella. Preston enamors me, you can help but love him! Preston is still running his business, is still a bit of a Casanova, and has taken to having Boris with him; though he really does step in it right out of the gate and had me holding my breath to see what was going to happen. Barney and Nick are the perfect additions to the story. I love the different personalities they bring to the story. Of course, I seeing Vivian with Becca is so sweet. OH, and Arthur and Gunter. There are so many wonderful aspects to this story!

From the first page, A Bloody Banquet draws you in and hold on to you until the last page. Just when you think you have figured it out, think again. The story is so well developed and the storylines line up so well that the mystery continues engulfing you making it a quintessential unputdownable cozy mystery! I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Overall, I am completely and totally in LOVE with this book! It picks up after the completion of book one and you find yourself immersed in the story. I swear, it transports you back in time and you're there with the characters. It's really quite an amazing experience and one of the many reasons I LOVE Gail Meath's books. There is nothing better than loosing yourself in one of her books.

I want to send a HUGE THANK YOU to Gail Meath for allowing me the opportunity to be an ARC reader for A Bloody Banquet! It is privilege to be allowed the opportunity. I cannot wait for the next book in this series. Thankfully, the next Jax Diamond book will be out around the first of the year, so I won't have to wait to long to get my hands on Meath's next book.

So if you're ready to join Vivian and Preston on their next adventure, grab A Bloody Banquet, curl up with your favorite book and snacks, and join them for the adventure! I promise, you will LOVE it!

Until next time, happy reading! 📖

Unfortunately, Carol finds a dead actress in the restroom. An hour later, a second actor is dead in the pool. The sparks fly when Vivian asked Preston Steele to help her solve the murders. I am so glad that I found the Stone & Steele mystery series last year. "A Bloody Banquet" is book two in the series and I already cannot wait to read book three. This series combines the glitz and glam of 1930s Hollywood with a great cast of characters and fun, twisty murder mysteries. This time Vivian and Preston are thrown together once again when Vivian's friend, Carole Lombard, swears that she found a dead body in the women's room during an award ceremony. But when Vivian returns with her, the body is gone! An hour later, another guest screams bloody murder that an actor drowned in the pool outside. Again, the body disappears. Preston and Vivian, along with Nick and Arthur and their growing group of friends have to track down magicians, journalists, and a myriad of grifters to get to the bottom of the case.

My only complaint stems from one of my particular pet peeves. It can be very frustrating when two adults cannot sit down and have an adult conversation, which would clear up any and all miscommunications. I understand they both have their reasons for not being completely honest with each other, and I absolutely appreciate how we learn bits and pieces of both of their backgrounds which definitely works in keeping me extremely invested in their stories. I cannot wait for the next book which should reveal most of the mysteries surrounding both Preston and Vivian. But I would liked them to have a bit more clear communication between the two of them as opposed to making a lot of decisions about each other wholly internally.

Thank you NetGalley and the author, Gail Meath, for a free copy of this eARC in return for an honest review.

Another great addition to the Stone & Steele Mystery series! When I got the email from Book Sirens letting me know arcs were available for A Bloody Banquet, I immediately hit the apply button! I have been eagerly waiting for this book, and it did not disappoint!

Preston and Vivian once again find themselves working together again when two murders are reported during the Awards Banquet (each of which occurred at a different time) but when others come to investigate the bodies have disappeared. With the help of their friends, they'll need to figure out who the killer is and what their motive is before someone else gets killed.

I could not put this book down as I had to know how the killer managed to make these bodies disappear in such a short time before anyone (other than the people who initially discovered them) could see them. Not only that but I had to find out if we would learn more about Preston and Vivian, who both have pasts they're not willing to share. I feel like the curtain was pulled back a little bit more on that front but there are still so many questions I have and I'm sure the next book will shed some light on them.

I also love the history that is woven into the plot as it makes it a little more real to me. I always read the special note to readers that the author includes where she not only gives readers little tidbits of history but includes pictures and links that we can watch. I've learned some interesting things through those special notes.

Review Rating: 5 Stars - Congratulations on your 5-star review!

A Bloody Banquet by Gail Meath is a captivating novel about Preston Stone, an investigator who has been trying to get some information about Vivian Steele, a fashion designer, because he suspects her to be tied to organized crime.

Gail Meath’s writing style is raw, engaging, captivating, and detailed. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, and I couldn’t stop reading until I was done. From the first chapter to the last, my heart was pounding; it felt so real, like I was right there with them. The characters are well developed; Meath did a great job because the characters were so easy to identify, leaving no room for confusion.

I'm impressed by how the murders were like movie scenes, leaving me wondering if the murders were actually real or staged. It was so unpredictable. This pace wasn't too fast or too slow; it was just perfect, giving me the best read.

Preston and Vivian really made me love this book more. At first, I thought they wouldn't get along because of their pasts, but I was so happy to see them work together. They made such a great team. The title caught my attention at first glance, and I really wanted to know more about it. The book explores themes of revenge, resilience, and hidden pasts. I recommend A Bloody Banquet by Gail Meath to lovers of historical and suspense-filled books.

Gail Meath’s Stone and Steele Mysteries series is, two books in, a favorite that I look forward to. It will be hard to wait a year for the next book in the series.

It is remarkably easy to slip back into the 1930s Hollywood era for an adventure with Vivian Steele and Preston Stone. This time, bodies are seen and then disappear without a trace, only to be discovered later — dead. In addition, there’s a second mystery to be solved.

Vivian Steele and Preston Stone both have secrets in their past that will need to be revealed in order for them to truly become partners as detectives, but the tension of those unrevealed secrets adds interest to the characters. I look forward to seeing Meath reveal the pasts that neither Vivian or Preston want to talk about.

Steele and Stone have good friends who help in their cases, including actress Carole Lombard. Every character gets a chance to participate in a way. In a way, Preston Stone’s organization reminds me of the organization headed by the Shadow, and I’m wondering if that isn’t intentional, considering the timeframe of the story.

Highly recommended!

I received an advance reader copy from the author through BookSirens, for which I thank them. All opinions are mine.

The Reluctant Partners are on the Case . . .

Preston Stone and Vivian Steele have skills useful in solving mysteries, although she hesitates to invite the notorious playboy to work with her on this peculiar mystery. Vivian is actually a fashion designer and is attending Hollywood's Annual Awards Banquet with her best friend, actress Carole Lombard. A number of actresses will be wearing Vivian's popular designs. When Carole visits the restroom, she finds a body and alerts the staff. However, the victim's body is not there, nor is there any evidence of a murder. Shortly after this incident, someone reports an actor who has evidently drowned in the outdoor pool. It starts to look like a nasty "joke" when it seems this death also didn't happen when no body could be found.

Vivian, however, is not laughing over this. She believes the murders really happened and intends to investigate. She reluctantly seeks help from Preston Stone since they had worked together in the past. As she suspected, there is an actual killer on the loose. Can they discover who it is and get the evidence they will need to prove it?

Im such a huge fan of Gail's and her wonderful trip back in time, this time to America 1938. The Golden Age of Movies.
The descriptions of the dresses, the sets, the theatres, they all felt so real, and I fould really imagine myself walking the streets alongside them.
The opening mystery is a strange one. At the Banquet of the year, where for the first time a lot of ladies will be wearing Vivian's gowns, two people are found dead, but as soon as someone goes to check they have disappeared.
Vivian again has to work with Preston, which is a love to hate relationship thats starting to feel more like a mutual understanding.
Alongside the mystery of the missing bodies is the running mystery of both Vivian and Preston's past. More clues given but no real answers...yet.
As always Carol and all the other characters were wonderful. I dont think I've never known another author quite capture the high society life of this era as well as Gail.
I basically read this cover to cover in a day, and when the reveal came it was clever and unexpected. Another fab read and im already chomping at the bit for book 3.

A big thank you to NetGalley, BooksGoSocial and Gail Meath for sharing this ARC with me, in exchange for my honest thoughts and opinions.

A Bloody Banquet is a phenomenal mystery/suspense book. I've always loved the 1930's Hollywood era. The 1930's era always gets me imagining of the Great Gatsby LOL. Preston and Vivian's chemistry and banter is unmatched. Ms. Gail's world building is chef's kiss 🤌🤌
At times I felt as though I was right there with them. The side characters blended in perfectly. The flow was fast paced but not rushed. The plot twists and turns did there job by keeping me on the edge of my seat. I read this book in 1 sitting. Ms. Gail's imagination is top tier. Just when you think you've got it figured out...Boom 💣💣 it twists and turns. You will be left thinking "Omg, wait what...I never thought it would go that way."
Ms. Gail has me so obsessed I will be sitting on the edge of my seat begging her for book #3 LOL.

A Bloody Banquet is this Autumn's MUST READ!!!

I wholeheartedly recommend that y'all get y'alls hands on this book, y'all will not regret it.

I love the way the story tells the everyday life that the Hollywood stars of the golden age in these stories Carole Lombard, Gary Cooper and others. The main character of the books is a fashion creator Vivian who has a past with shady people that she is trying to remain apart from, her not wished for partner is a wealthy Californian Preston Stone whose family also has a past……….. so threads of these past lives do appear in this second book in the series, but these are not a deterrent for readers of this book as it can be read as a standalone.

The murders are done in a rather dramatic way and the bodies are moved before others discover them………….. then the bodies appear elsewhere…. the murderer is a devious person…………..

The story is gripping and the historic details and little things like the language is of a past time are perfect.

A GREAT mystery and a series that I shall be following as the characters of Vivian and Preston and their past stories are riveting.

If you like drama and suspense and murder then this is a book for you.
The author does a magnificent job of weaving her tale with historical facts within her fictional plot. There is enough twist and turns to keep the reader guessing and engaged.
The main characters are well developed and add a wonderful twist within the plot line.
There are several “mysteries “ that flow within the series that interconnect the books but are not necessary to enjoy the book…but adds to the whole experience.
The author does not use graphic imagery with the murder.
I received an ARC and all options are my own.

I was given this book by the author. I read it as an ARC. My review is completely unbiased.
My review of the book A Bloody Banquet.
Rating: 5, excellent.
Author, Gail Meath, has written a true page turner in this second in her Stone and Steele series.
It's Hollywood's heyday of the 1930s.
It's the night of the Awards Banquet begins a time of unexplainable deaths, missing bodies, and true "who-dunits".
Vivian again has to team up with Stone and his comrades to solve these murders, before the killer gets away.
I could not wait to see if the team succeeds.
Truly another 5 Star by Ms. Meath.

This Hollywood Golden Age mystery is so much fun! It’s book two in the series, and book one really sets up the relationships and connections nicely. I had no idea who the killer was, and their misdeeds were quite chilling. A lot of character backstories were opened up as well, though perhaps not in the way I expected, but it was only a hint and there’s plenty more to be uncovered in book three! Thanks to the author and NetGalley for the ARC.

Murder by Magic

While this is only book two, this series is going to be terrific with frenemies Vivian Steele and Preston Stone dancing around each other as the bodies fall in 1930s Los Angeles. Add screwball actress Carole Lombard as Vivian's best friend, throw in other Hollywood stars, and you're in for a real treat.

The second book in the Stone and Steele series did not disappoint!

You get a glimpse of both Vivian and Preston’s past with even more questions as the story unfolds. A mystery in a mystery making you look forward to the next book.

The historical tidbits at the end of the book make the story and the characters come to life.

Beautifully written and so cleverly put together!

Can’t wait to read the next book!

May 1938. At the Awards Banquet ceremony, the first body is found in the ladies restroom, stabbed. The second, a male, floating in the pool, strangled. In both case minutes later the bodies had disappeared. Can Vivian and Preston, with the help of friends, work together to solve the mysteries.
An entertaining and well-written historical mystery with its cast of likeable and interesting characters. A good second book in the series.

Here is my review for A Bloody Banquet (Stone & Steele) by Gail Meath

I thoroughly enjoyed this Preston Stone & Vivian Steele deadly illusion murder mystery story which I got into as soon as I started to read it. I got so engrossed in the story that I found it impossible to put the book down as I wanted to know who was behind it all! The story is set in Hollywood in 1938. Vivian works as a fashion designer and her best friend is Carole Lombard who is a famous actress. Preston Stone and his two associates work on various jobs and they can obtain useful information needed very quickly, usually. They are both quick thinkers and where murder is involved, tend to think along the same lines. Vivian doesn’t like Preston but ends up sharing her information about what she found at the nightclub with him. They make a start on trying to see if there are two dead bodies somewhere! This story was extremely well written, superbly plotted and well thought out. The descriptive text was beautifully written and so informative. It brought great pictures to my mind, especially of Boris the very large pup Preston owned! I like Stone and Steele as they seem to be like chalk and cheese, keeping secrets from each other, not sure of each other and yet being drawn together by solving murder cases. Preston wants to involve her with Barney and Nick but not being able to trace her past is troubling him. Vivian knows he tried to check on her so she hates him even more! The characters feel very realistic and so does the setting. There are some famous names from that era mentioned in the story. I believe that the author may have done some research to write this book as it shows in the information reflected in this story. It’s a terrific historical crime mystery story. It was a quick read and the writing style was easy to get into. I have now read both books in this series and I love it! It’s made its way onto my tbr pile and I’m looking forward to the next book coming out next year. I enjoy reading Gail Meath’s books and enjoy both her historical crime mystery series.

This is book 2 in the Stone and Steele Mysteries series and it is just as good, if not better, than the first book. Preston Stone and Vivan Steele are reluctant partners in solving mysteries – I’m so glad they are still not friends yet, much less lovers, as happens way too fast in far too many cozy mysteries. The setting is 1930s Hollywood with Carole Lombard (who meets her own tragic end IRL far too young) as Vivian’s best friend. Vivian is a fashion designer with a past that we are slowly learning about but still don’t know everything, and Preston is a wealthy playboy with some secrets of his own. Preston’s wealth and Vivian’s work to design dresses for Hollywood stars allows Gail Meath to write in famous actors from old, like Clark Gable and Myrna Loy. Young readers may not recognize these names but for those of us of a certain age, we grew up watching these old movies on TV back when there were only 3 or 4 stations to choose from. Ms. Meath keeps the narrative flowing and this is a fast read – not very long, packed with action and suspense, yet filled with beautiful descriptions of both people and place. I like Vivian’s spunk and I like that she is not intimidated by Preston’s wealth or charm, and of course that intrigues Preston who wants to know more about Vivan. I think he wants her to like him. Maybe someday her guard will come down and she will accept him as a friend, but for now, they work well together in solving crimes and murders. Having Carole Lombard along for the ride with Vivian is a hoot! For those who care, the book is G-rated in the romance area and perhaps PG rated in the violence area, and there is no bad language. It is well edited and proofed, and Ms. Meath’s writing is a joy as she brings 1930s Hollywood glamour to life. I also like her Jax Diamond series, and I look forward to the next books in both series.

My thanks for receiving an advance review copy of this book for free. I leave this review voluntarily and with great pleasure.

A great start of a series! Vivian Steele can’t wait for the annual Awards Banquet being held at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub. It's a star-studded event, and several acclaimed actresses will be wearing her fashion designs. She's attending with her friend Carole Lombard. However, there's some unexpected turns when--not 1 but 2--dead bodies show up--1 in the ladies room and another later in the pool. But then they suddenly disappear! Is this a prank or for real? Vivian believes the murders were real, and she has no choice but to ask Preston Stone (a man she despises) for help in solving the mystery. She can't believe the circumstances has the 2 of them thrown together again! While Vivian has a remarkable memory as well as drawing skills that help to figure out the mystery, Preston brings his own polished investigative skills, Hollywood connections, and smooth talk to the situation. Will playboy Preston win Vivian's heart while solving the murder? There's plenty of exciting twists and turns, danger behind every clue, and the lovable Bella and Boris with their quirky habits (Vivian's and Preston's dogs). What's not to love? I was glued to the book and thoroughly enjoyed this clean mystery. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, "A Helluva Holiday". Will Vivian be traveling to Havana for some unfinished business and to help Preston on yet another adventure? I can't wait to find out!

Fashion designer Vivian Steele is excited to attend an awards banquet at the Cocoanut Grove club in Hollywood. Some of the honorees are going to be wearing Vivan’s designs, and she and her best friend Carole Lombard are looking forward to an enjoyable evening. When Carole sees a dead body in the club’s restroom, she immediately calls for help. But when help arrives, the body has disappeared. Vivan begins to investigate, reluctantly allowing playboy Preston Stone to assist her once again. This is the second book in the Stone and Steele Series and can easily be read as a standalone.

This is a wonderful cozy set in Hollywood, and I love the fact that the fabulous Carole Lombard is a supporting character. The mystery is so well crafted, and I did not guess the villain before they were revealed. The backstories of Vivan and Preston continue to be another captivating mystery, and a little bit of that onion is slowly unpeeled in this second book. The ending of this compelling cozy offers more clues into their backstories and hints at an exciting third book in the series to come. Fans of cozy mysteries will enjoy this series, which transports us to the Golden Age of Hollywood.

I received a free copy of this book. I also purchased a copy. My review is voluntary and the opinions expressed are my own.

A lovely dive back into 1930s Hollywood, I’d been eagerly awaiting book two since the first and I wasn't disappointed. I really like the chemistry between Vivian and Preston as well as the supporting characters. There were also a few backstory secrets about both of them revealed which I'd been wondering about.

At times I think the story dragged and I didn't understand the motivation for the staged deaths at the awards. I think these books really could do with a line editor as there's so many clunky descriptions and extraneous detail that didn't serve the story. For instance, I had to re-read the opening sentence a few times as it felt like it started in the middle of a chapter 'Preston paid the taxi driver extra to wait for them at the curb...' Preston who? It later made a reference to 'they' without telling me upfront Preston and Nick both went to the tavern'. Also, I really don't like that the author used a real-life celebrity as a character. Surely she could've just created 'Caroline Lomay' as a Carole Lombard stand in?

That said I enjoy these books for some fun escapism, but my rating reflects some issues I had with the writing.

Another instalment of what is a fun, cozy Hollywood mystery series. I'm looking forward to book three where more answers will hopefully be revealed.

Thanks to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for the ARC.

Our intrepid heroes are back in book two in the exciting new series – the Stone & Steele Mysteries. And of course Bella, the Boston Terrier, and her friend, Boris, the giant Saint Bernard are back too. They are part of the book’s attraction for me as a dog lover. Since reviewing book one I got a Jack Russell puppy, who is about the same size as Bella, so ALL her doggy friends are bigger than her, though not as big as Boris.

But I digress. Vivian is best friends with the film star Carole Lombard. They are at an awards ceremony at The Cocoanut Club, when Carole discovers a dead woman in the Ladies Restroom. But when they return to investigate the body has disappeared. Was it ever there or did Carole imagine it? But then another guest discovers a body floating in the swimming pool, which also mysteriously vanishes. No-one believes them of course, but Vivian is not so sure. It’s not like her friend to make things up.

One of the things I love about this series is the real life film stars that feature in the stories. Actors like Clark Gable, who was famously married to Carole Lombard until her premature death in 1942 in a plane crash (historical fact not a spoiler), Bette Davies and Spencer Tracy. Their involvement in the plot of course is entirely fictional.

Preston Stone and Vivian Steele still dislike each other, though we know they don’t really. Vivian is a dress designer to the stars, while Preston is a wealthy playboy. He’s everything she hates, but they still make a great team as he is always reminding her. And then there are Nick and Barney, who help Preston with his investigations. It’s a great series, full of excitement and intrigue and I look forward to book three.

Many thanks to @ZooloosBT for inviting me to be part of this blog tour.

It's 1938 and time for Hollywood’s annual Awards Banquet at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub.
Eager to see her beautiful fashion designs on several famous actresses, Vivian Steele accompanies her best friend, Carole Lombard, to the event.
During the awards ceremony, Carole visits the ladies’ room and comes running out, telling Vivian that there's a dead actress there.
But, when the staff goes to check- there is no body.
An hour later, another guest alerts the staff that there's another body in the pool. But, when they investigate, again there's no body!
Vivian's curiosity gets the better of her and, because of her friend’s involvement, she goes back to the ladies’ room to investigate, finding a tiny button under the sink. The game is on!
This is a great book! With Vivian and the notorious playboy, Preston Stone, joining forces to solve the mysteries, they uncover a sinister plot to murder other Hollywood stars.
I enjoyed the Hollywood star element, the plot twists are plentiful and the ending…you’ve gotta read this book!
I received this book as an Advanced Reader Copy and I am happy to leave this voluntary review.

This is the second outing for Vivian Steele and Preston Stone, and oh boy did I enjoyed meeting them again.
When two women, including her best friend Carole Lombard discover the bodies of two people, which then disappear, Vivian, very reluctantly enlists the help of playboy, Preston, to help solve the mystery and prevent the deaths of two more Hollywood stars.
This is another great story set in the Golden era of crime. Vivian is a very strong woman who refuses to back down, and her complicated relationship with Preston, including at times, her withering comments is a joy to read. There’s still much of her back story yet to be revealed, but you do find out a little bit more about her as the story progresses. And I do have to admit, I admire Preston. Himself an enigma, he also has secrets to hide. The pair make a fabulous duo, along with Preston’s sidekicks, and the adorable Boris and Bella.
A Bloody Banquet is a delight to read, with the vivid descriptions immediately putting you into the glamorous 1930’s, and I’ll be first line the line for book 3 from Gail, eager to discover what’s next for these two awesome sleuths.

"A Bloody Banquet" is a sheer delight from start to finish. Gail Meath effortlessly whisks the reader back to the dazzling world of 1938 Hollywood, where the star-studded Awards Banquet at the Cocoanut Grove turns into a scene from a macabre magic show. The central hook is irresistible: a murder is witnessed, but the body vanishes, not once, but twice, leaving the glamorous guests chuckling and our sharp-witted heroine, Vivian Steele, determined to prove a killer is performing the ultimate illusion.

Meath's strength lies in her vibrant atmosphere and charming character dynamics. The reluctant partnership between fashion designer Vivian and playboy Preston Stone crackles with wit and underlying warmth, while cameos from real-life icons like Carole Lombard add a layer of fun authenticity. The mystery itself is cleverly constructed, balancing the "howdunit" of the disappearing bodies with a classic whodunit among the rich and famous. With a delightful supporting cast (including the canine costars!) and a plot that moves at a perfect clip, this is a clean, charming, and thoroughly engaging escape. A fantastic second act for the Stone & Steele Mysteries!
