Navy SEAL Kelvin *Viper* Dare was born to be a frogman. Heβs pretty much seen it all over his fifteen-year career, and nothing surprises him anymore. Nothing except an unexpected natural disaster, which sends his teamβs latest mission to hell in a handbasket. Volcanic blasts were not even on his radar when he and his men deployed to search for the newest terrorist to dare bring war to US soil. Now he must figure out how the hell he can protect not only his team, but also the American they find deep in the cave system, which offers their only chance of survival.
Archaeologist Howard *Ward* Sutherland was supposed to be on the trip of a lifetime to study the ancient markings found at a cave entrance on an unnamed island in the Indian Ocean. The further into the cave he moves, the more of the witch symbols he deciphers, and the louder the island rumbles and shakes under his feet. He may not be able to see what is happening on the surface, but the sudden appearance of a Special Ops team, and its growly, bossy leader, tells him things are very, very wrong.
When an ancient power stirs and the veil between worlds cracks, they must choose between duty and destiny. Because some doors, once opened, demand more than loyaltyβthey demand your soul.
Magic, legends, and a brotherhood whoβve been waiting for their High King!
PNR/Special Forces/Military MM Fiction packed with Irish myths and legends, alpha heroes, raw emotion, fated mates, and more.
Annabella Stone and Bella Stone are the alter egos of a wife and mom, who was lucky enough to find happy ever after with her own personal hero.
Annabella loves to write Military Romance and Romantic Suspense where warriors love harder when bullets fly. She believes in love at first sight and wants everyone to have the happy ever they deserve. Even if they have to dodge bullets and fight with everything that they are to get it.
Born and raised in Ireland, Annabella has a GrΓ‘ for a good story and the breakfast blaa, but funnily enough, prefers Jack Daniels to Irish whiskey. Having lived across 7 countries and 3 continents over the last thirty years, she loves to explore new places and cultures. In her world, coffee is king, and she is 100% sure it deserves it's own food group.
Annabella is owned by a pack of malamutes, whom she loves to both work and show. If you can't find her at the computer writing, chances are she and her woofers have escaped to enjoy at day at a dog show, or they are on a mountain trail with the dryland rig or the sled, depending on the time of year.
Annabella's motto is "Live life like a malamute who found the gate open, but take the time to enjoy the sights while you're running."
If it was possible, I'd give this latest read from Annabella Stone ALL the stars!!! I'm proud and glad to call myself a super-fan of her work; I've read, and bought, every volume she's written, and have yet to be disappointed.
NOTE: Given recent activity in the "bookish" community, I've decided to include non-spoiler snippets of the text in my reviews to illustrate content that moved me, re-imagined tropes in a new way, or otherwise show the care that any author brings to their craft. If you want to "go in blind", may I suggest that you skip the following and just know that Operation Caldera is a complete TRIUMPH.
----------
Firstly, the standard info: Viper leads his Team Volcano on a "standard" HVT black-ops mission that quickly goes very sideways. The fierce action (which is plenty) is balanced by found family, unexpected revelry, and many of the Operators finding a sense of belonging that they didn't even know was missing in their lives. Schmexii times build in a way that is natural, believable, both sweet and magma-hot, and written in the respectful way that fans can rely on Annabella to bring to her stories.
The very care that Annabella takes is present from the beginning. Given that this series is centered on timeless Irish myths, she has included a simple pronunciation guide for common (in the text) Irish words and phrases. If more authors would take the time to do this, I suspect there'd be less confusion about how "creative" words, names, etc. sound; relying on audiobooks to clarify this is .... insufficient.
In the same vein, Annabella subtly describes the current action while referencing past ops for Viper's team:
"The light from the glyphs began to twist, spiraling up in ribbons that shimmered between gold and blue. One by one, they lifted from the rock, unfurling into the air like Fionn and Trace had yanked the stars down into the cave and snapped them into place mid-spin. The heat of it hit like a second sun, causing the temperature to spike again, and Viperβs Shemagh was soaked to the seams."
Stone, Annabella . Operation Caldera: PNR/Special Forces/Military MM Fiction (Operation Volcano Book 2) (p. 102). Embers Romance LLC. Kindle Edition.
The use of "shemagh" in the final sentence tells the reader, with a little googling, that this is a head-covering for men in the Middle East. I was immediately able to conclude that Viper had extensive and recent experience in that region. Writing it in this way cleverly bypasses the need to specify Viper's & Co.'s military credentials. It further enforces that regardless of their past experiences, what was happening in the moment was completely new. Brilliant!!
Chapter nine opens with a stunning description of their new environment, beginning with the following (2nd paragraph), and continuing to the next page:
"DΓΊn Fianna wasnβt ruins or some half-collapsed hillfort like heβd studied in books or excavated in frozen mud with aching knees. It was alive, whole, and real in a way nothing ever had been before."
Stone, Annabella . Operation Caldera: PNR/Special Forces/Military MM Fiction (Operation Volcano Book 2) (p. 133). Embers Romance LLC. Kindle Edition.
Annabella describes things by carefully choosing each and every type of word: noun, verb, adjective, or adverb. She doesn't clog her descriptions with unending sentences that leave the reader confused by their length. She EDITS to pack appropriate punch for what she presents.
Later in the same chapter, both the (1) strangeness of their new environment, and (2) local customs regarding mating are explained -- to allay any fears of the team (by extension, the reader) that these customs apply to consenting adults:
βNothing is allowed to happen until the female is eighteen.β Trace cut him off. βIf a mate is revealed before the age of nine, they are betrothed until the female reaches eighteen. Only once, nine times nine years have passed, will the mating bond come to fruition.β
Stone, Annabella . Operation Caldera: PNR/Special Forces/Military MM Fiction (Operation Volcano Book 2) (p. 147). Embers Romance LLC. Kindle Edition.
This passage closes that male-male (or female-female) matches happen naturally if a male-female bond hasn't been revealed by this age. Once again, Annabella shows the reader that in her Universes love is love is love; it is natural by virtue of the simple fact that these connections exist. Beautiful!
As one final example of the care taken in this story, in Chapter 12, Annabella gives us dialogue that informs us about the magic system, other local customs, and a subtle call-back clarifying earlier "facts" (proven false) about the flavour of Celtic that is in effect -- this realm is unashamedly Irish-adjacent:
βIf you explain this βcoffeeβ to me,β Fionn said slowly, βour magic will be able to reproduce it here.β βIf you can magic me up coffee,β Kaze rubbed his hands together, βthen Iβm yours to command, my liege.β βRΓ.β Trace smacked Kaze on the back of the head. βLiege is some medieval or Norman shite. In the Fianna, you say mo RhΓ.β βMuh ree,β Kaze dutifully repeated. βClose enough.β
Stone, Annabella . Operation Caldera: PNR/Special Forces/Military MM Fiction (Operation Volcano Book 2) (p. 201). Embers Romance LLC. Kindle Edition.
It may seem like a small thing, but subtle reminders like this, written as dialogue between characters draws the reader into the scene without the need for exposition. In one exchange, I can answer (as the reader) that (1) magic is also functional, (2) their roots are Irish Celtic rather than Norman or British, and (3) their leader has earned the respect of those he leads. The dialogue is quick, natural, and enjoyable without feeling like a boring history lesson.
I've experienced far too many current, and past, authors that choose to info-dump elements of their world-building within the text. For me, immersive worlds draw me in by subtly inviting me rather than hitting me over the head with "facts" about said world. The latter option prompts me to skim the text, thereby possibly missing important context. I write this knowing that there is a spectrum of styles as broad as that of readers. Neither is "better". Thankfully, we can choose the style(s) we prefer.
In closing, Operation Caldera is filled to the brim with action that is gripping, fast paced, changes with the environment, and believable. The romance(s) are respectful, full of awe and wonder, sprinkled with uncertainty (given that some are new), and never feel forced or imposed on the characters or reader. There are obvious and welcome connections to archetypes that are common to many myths, presented from an Irish pov that may be new to readers (I was lucky enough to be aware of the foundations of this series). The characters feel REAL, they feel seasoned, they feel raw (yet refined), and I can see myself discussing "deep" issues or grabbing a drink at the local with any of them with equal comfort. I would be honoured to be counted as Family by any of them.
A fantastic book, grand series and one Iβm highly excited to recommend.
Rating: 4.5π
Did I lose it over the turns in this book? Why yes I did. Had zero clue Stone was going to take the series in this amazing direction. Iβm so excited and in for this series.
If you havenβt read this or are familiar here, author Annabella Stone is taking black ops, military top secret missions, explosive situations, alpha military training forces, fated mates, magic, outstanding use and twists on Irish mythology and lore. Legends come to life. I feel like Iβm forgetting something.
If that wasnβt enough.
Stone packs her storytelling with a found family of a black ops unit called Volcano. Then starts expanding her characters and universe with Irish mythology and folding in magical powers and fated mates in a way thatβs entirely different. Itβs pulled together by the steel, strength , and love for the fight for doing the right thing, for loyalty, and brotherhood.
Stone bridges the worlds between humanity and mythology and makes it powerful and believable in the men and their bonds. To the one they love and to the group they call brothers.
Itβs not without elements that had me asking for more exploration or explanation about some areas. Like what happened to the supernatural training that was supposed to happen.
However, Iβm betting it will be a part of the next book to come out next year.
But here? The yes, explosive story begins with *Viper* Dare and his rescue of Archaeologist *Ward* Sutherland while on a secret mission with his unit.
Itβs one wild and crazy thing after another. I absolutely wonβt spoil the twists and surprises but Stoneβs rich lush descriptions bring to life such incredible characters and scenes that you can hear the songs, smell the banquet, and take in the atmosphere that Viper and Hank are watching and are a part of.
Great twists, outstanding characters, and action sequences, vividly captured details and beautiful use of magic and mythology.
Thereβs an Irish dictionary for some of the words and phrases. Loved that.
I only wish I could zoom ahead for the next bookβs release date.
A fantastic book, grand series and one Iβm highly excited to recommend.

Operation Volcano : - [x] Operation Magma #1 - [x] Operation Caldera #2 - [ ] Operation Fuego #3 - April 30,2026 (argh!) - Reaperβs story
When the Dord Fiann, the hunting horn of the Fianna, sounds three times, it will signal the return of Fionn MacCumhaill and The Fianna. In Operation Magma, the prequel story to Operation Caldera we were introduced to the myths and legends of Ireland. And we heard the horn. In Operation Caldera, the horn sounds 2 more times, and our faithful SEAL team helps Fionn MacCumhaill escape his prison and return to TΓr na nΓg.
Annabella Stone, in her newest series, combines my 2 favorite genres: special forces protector romance and paranormal romance. And absolutely knocks it out of the park. In Magma, we were introduced to the main team. In Caldera the true story begins.
Viper is the CO of the SEAL team. An alpha protector. On the hunt and out for revenge against a terrorist who was responsible for the deaths of friends and former teammates. Ward is an archeologist who specializes in ancient Irish languages, legend and lore. He is summoned to a small volcanic island when strange symbols that appear to be old Irish in nature are found in caves.
Viper and his team are on this island to remove the terrorist from existence. When the volcano starts to erupt, the team find themselves trapped with Ward and heading away from the lava flow.
AND no more spoilers! Ms Stone weaves a tale with the power of a true SeanchaΓ. Irish legends come to life while our special ops alpha protectors go head to head with the Fianna and the High King himself. These men have been chosen by the gods to battle ancient evils that have escaped from TΓr na nΓg back to their world. Modern tales are woven so skillfully into the fabric of Irish lore so well you lose yourself in the story. You find yourself emotionally invested within the first chapter and cannot stop reading until the very last page. These technically are all stand alone books, but I have a feeling this series is going leave us emotionally twisted and wrung out and hung out to dry! Now the torture begins of waiting for the next bookβ¦.
Before reading this, Iβd highly recommend you first read the prequel-βOperation Magmaβ. To be honest, itβs one of my favorite stories, and I reread it every-so-often. That story will help get you settled into this wonderful universe the author has to creatively and ingeniously created.
Anyways, based on the prequel, I thought Iβd have a heads-up on what to expect with this novel-WRONG! My journey through this book took a lot of unexpected twists and turns, and as an avid reader, thatβs so refreshing.
Iβm not going to go over plot points, you can read the Book Overview for that, but I will tell you Iβm a huge sucker for fated mates stories, and this particular one is one of the sweetest and most romantic Iβve come across. Viper is a Navy SEAL, and Ward is about as opposite from that as you can come and the romance is off the charts.
I also really appreciate the author for writing a story with an actual plot and not just being glorified porn. Most of my DNF books have a thin plot wrapped around the coupling of the main characters. Not with this story. Here you have a page turner as you hunger for what happens next.
This book will also be on my reread list! Partially because there is a lot of Irish mythology here that Iβm not familiar with and rereading it will help me understand it better. Rereading it will also just be a great way to pass my personal time. Rereading it will also help me survive until Book 3 comes out-a book Iβve already preordered.
If you canβt tell, I highly recommend this story and am in awe of the authorβs talent!
I do not have the words to do this book justice, I'm just a reader who loves stories that let me escape and live with the characters in the stories for a while. This one, well you don't put it down unless you have too. It brings together the present time mixed with magic, legends and myths of centuries old Ireland and an Island in the middle of nowhere with a volcano threatening to blow at any minute. Ancient Irish language and so much more. It's got so much power, I could almost feel the floor vibrating. It has suspense galore, heat! Well that was felt in more ways than one. It stretched my imagination in all directions. Characters are fabulous and easy to like, or be quite wary of because of their background. The whole mix was intriguing with how it all worked and seemed so real, old and new. The author used stories she grew up with and brought them to life in a very present day, she kept me enthralled and believing. Smiling, loving the way the team integrated and joined in, but also kept awareness at all times. I loved that Viper and Ward talked, were tentative and didn't rush head-on before they both felt ready, then took a leap together. This story is an author honing and stretching her craft and creativity, using life new and old and having readers believe anything is possible. Phenomenal story.
Annabella Stone is a 1-click author for me but this book really trumps everything.
I already adored the first one, Operation Magma, but this installment really is amazing. To get the whole background, do read the books in order.
Here you have an Irish author who is putting the stories and legends she grew up with on paper in an amazing tales of warriors, battles, magic and love.
As usual, she has written a team with very close bonds, brothers not by blood but by growing a bond due to their battles. Now she expends it by adding the warriors of Ireland's past.
It's more than imagine The Fianna, Fionn Mac Cumhaill and Tir na nOg, you feel like you are there and witnessing the story and the people in person.
Viper and Ward are a great couple, protector and his academic who is discovering more than he planned, not just as a historic find but also about himself. Viper is the leader who kneels for no king but protects and rescues, be it an academic or an Irish king.
I can't wait to see what the author has in mind for the rest of team Volcano and I hope we see The Fianna back soon.
I honestly have to say a huge THANK YOU to Annabella Stone for this book - again it is not something I would normally gravitate to and while I loved book 1 - book 2 was even more phenomenal. Viper and Ward might seem on the surface as an unlikely duo, it only takes a moment and an open mind and heart to see that they were perfect for each other. Add in the other world they find themselves in and the layers of the story just get that much Better. This entire series needs to be made into movies - there I said it!!
Annabella Stone at her best. Operation Caldera is book 2 in the Operation Volcano series, read book 1 first to get the foundations and the best of Bran. This book takes the operators on a mission that proves to be literally out of this world. Be prepared for myths, legends and magic, this book is all of those.
What an absolutely phenomenal story!! I knew when I read Operation Magma, I was going to love this series. The mixture of the realms was done perfectly. The love story was Annabella Stone good. The legends sucked you in so it felt like you were there with the guys. So so so good!!
This is definitely worth reading and learning that Annabelle Stone is one of my favorite authors. This series Operation Volcano has bit of magical powers mixed withe Viper leading his military team. Mixed with the old Irish with todays modern times is a great way for finding your Mate. Please read book π one first.
Sooo worth the wait!!! Bella I just loved this story. Thank you!!
Now I can't wait for our boys to go back thru the door and have more adventures. Bella wove such a magical story with believable characters and worlds and it is just amazing. Just WOW. π₯ππΊππ₯
I really donβt know Bella does it. The stories the world building the individuals. Everything makes me want to be with this group of men as they face what they face and how they live their lives. The Irish Lore just is the topping on the cake. Love loved this book!
Wow, where do I start with this story. Intense, fun, spicy. All the words and great fun as well. Book 2 in Annabella Stone's new PNR MM series. Once you start this story you won't be able to put it down. It is a great read. Flows well, little twists and turns and builds on the little hints and twists that were in Operation Magma. Can't wait for more.
In the prequel novel Operation Magma, Bran, the legendary King of Irelandβs wolf shifter who has fought wars for millennium had to reinvent himself after failing his Seal Teamβs post injury physical. He signed on with the CIA and got himself dropped into a dodgy deployment with a new SEAL team. The 2IC is his fated mate which is supposed to be impossible. Fighting their way off that rocky outpost when both the CO Viper and Branβs new mate are severely wounded, Bran has to out himself as a shifter to save them. And he gets Bran permanently assigned to their team. In Operation Caldera, the team is dropped onto a remote Indian Ocean island to takeout a terrorist who is in hiding. They have been instructed to avoid the archeology team that is working there but that upends when the volcano starts erupting and they are caught deep underneath the molten lava flows with the archeologist who inadvertently sets off the eruption by reading the ancient Irish symbols burned into the cavernβs entrance. Annabella Stone blends her extensive writing experience and knowledge of the Spec Ops world with the lore of her native Ireland. Although this is her first foray into PNR, it certainly wonβt be the last. These natural born protectors are begging for the rest of their stories to be told and mates to be found. It just doesnβt get any better than this. I want to give this all the stars and stand by to pre-order the next in series.
I thought I had some idea of what to expect in Operation Caldera after reading Operation Magma. I was off by miles. Caldera is full of magic, legends, rituals, mythical kingdoms and ancient warriors. Team Volcano's mission is to eliminate a high value target but what ensues will absolutely captivate you. In another dimension Volcano Team leader Kelvin "Viper" Dare finds something he was neither prepared for nor looking for. Archeologist Dr. Howard " Ward" Sutherland is self described nerd whose forte is ancient languages. This pairing is as strange as they come but the heart wants what it wants. Fated mates cannot be denied. Honestly, I was blown away!
