Welcome to the Changing Land, the last, and some would say, the least of six linked, magical, worlds. Archers Beach, Maine is one of those places in the Changing Land where the weird crosses into the mundane. Where the sea isn't the only magic working, and the Guardian just the first of many spirits of small places who partake of and protect the Land.
Here for the first time, are all of the Archers Beach short stories, collected into one volume. A perfect companion for the audiobook from Tantor. Included in this book Emancipated Child,", "How Nathan Archer Came to be a Prince of the Land of the Flowers," "The Gift of Music," "The night don't seem so lonely," "Will-o'-the-Wisp," "The Wolf 's Bride," "The Road to Pomona's," "The Vestals of Midnight," and "Wolf in the Wind." The author's foreword is original to this volume.
"This is how things would be if the fae world actually did impinge on our own world." -- SFRevu
"A beautiful relaxing read, delivered by a master storywright." -- Alma A. Hromic
Sharon Lee has been married to her first husband for more than half her lifetime; she is a friend to cats, a member of the National Carousel Association, and oversees the dubious investment schemes of an improbable number of stuffed animals.
Despite having been born in a year of the dragon, Sharon is an introvert. She lives in Maine because she likes it there. In fact, she likes it so much that she has written five novels set in Maine; contemporary fantasy trilogy Carousel Tides, Carousel Sun, Carousel Seas, and mysteries Barnburner and Gunshy.
With the aforementioned first husband, Steve Miller, Sharon has written twenty novels of science fiction and fantasy — many of them set in the Liaden Universe® — and numerous short stories. She has occasionally been an advertising copywriter, a reporter, photographer, book reviewer, and secretary. She was for three years Executive Director of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, Inc., and was subsequently elected vice president and then president of that organization.
For those who’ve read Sharon Lee’s Archer beach series, this collection provides an enjoyable revisit and rounding out of side characters of the series. For those who haven’t read her Archer’s beach series, these short stories give you an introduction and taste of Archer Beach. These stories feature dealing with the problems of life , trying to get through the day in a magical small beach town in Maine. Either way, you can’t go wrong picking up and giving this book a read.
Fantastic as all of theirs are. This is a collection of shorter stories about Archers Beach and the inhabitants. As always the characters are compelling, and the stories engaging. Grab this and enter a world where magic is present and the lands guardians deal with issues. Stories where wanderers find homes and a place as old as time deals with change. Highly recommend. You do not need to have read the other Archers Beach books to enjoy this but if you have you’ll recognize many familiar faces
I'm well familiar with other works of this author in a more sci fi genre. However, there's a common feeling that comes from the excellent turn of language that brings characters, magic, and the surroundings to life, and the way story resolutions are reached. It's a feeling that balance has been achieved and "all is right with the world".
Even though the "world" of this book series is totally different from the other, it is -at the very least- equally enjoyable. Treat yourself to the whole series and to this collection of short stories.
It is really nice to have all of the short stories for a particular universe in one place. Even though I had read all of the stories as they came out, in various venues, it was wonderful to revisit the characters again. I think my favorites are about the Trenvay, the smaller powers of “the Changing Land”.
The writing is so evocative, that I smell the sea air while I read.
This is a must-have companion piece to the Carousel Tides /Kate Archer novels.
Although it has been years since I have read the Archers Beach trilogy by Sharon Lee, I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of short stories. Now, I need to go back and reread the series.
