With these words from Bhairavi Ma echoing in his heart, a young monk who had renounced a multimillion-dollar business empire retreated into the Himalayas. For thirteen months, he engaged in intense meditation, seeking the finest reward there self-realization.
But what truly unfolded in those serene yet desolate mountains? Faced with biting cold, prowling wild animals, crippling hunger, and overwhelming isolation, Om Swami tested the limits of his mind and body. Struggling to sit in sadhana for hours, he oscillated between moments of transcendent joy and crushing despair. What spiritual practices did he adopt? How did he keep the 'spark' of sadhana alive? Were the rituals enough to reach the Divine, or did doubt and fear creep in, even for one so wise?
Thirteen Months in the Himalayas offers a rare and mesmerizing glimpse into Om Swami's extraordinary journey of self-realization. A sequel to the bestselling If Truth Be Told, it takes you deeper into the heart of a monk's spiritual practice and his unwavering quest for the Divine.
Om Swami is a mystic who lives in the Himalayan foothills. Prior to renunciation, he founded and ran a multimillion-dollar software company with offices across the world.
This is an honest account of the Monk, Om Swamiji on his Sadhana and realisation in Himalayas. May be many people go ahead and complete their Sadhanas, few of them realise the truth and this one Monk went ahead with generosity and compassion in his heart and taught us, naive people, to do it as well. This book is kind of an example on how a modern person can also do sadhana. But also it shows how much precision, hardwork and energy goes in getting success in what you started out to achieve. Nothing comes easy, and of course not God, in that matter. His penance and precision brought tears to my eyes so many times. It was his honest toiling, the purity at heart for Mother Goddess that made me cry for him. I can now relate to what he meant by ‘crying meditation’. It is as if god in his form has come down to live and be an example to the humankind in this age. Very inspiring, touching and loving experience to read this book. Also I feel grateful that this book found me❤️ 🙏
This book is a surprisingly simple yet profoundly deep read. At first glance, it appears like a sadhna log, but anyone familiar with Om Swami and his works will tell you it’s much more than that. The book is a window into a life lived with intense purpose and introspection. When I sat down to write this review- I found myself at a loss for words so much that I couldn’t decide where to begin or end. One chapter in particular, the 18th, touched me deeply; I couldn’t help but shed tears as I read it. This untraditional book by an untraditional monk invites you to explore the depths of spirituality in a way that lingers long after the final page is turned. It offers both simplicity and depth in every page.
Having read a good chunk of Om Swami Ji’s collection, I was eagerly waiting for his next book, and I’m glad to finally read him again after a long time.
This book is a sequel to If Truth Be Told: a monk's mémoire, the book that first got me into reading (something I’ll always be grateful for). If I were to sum it up in one sentence, it would be: "I have discovered my own truth. Go discover yours—it’ll be worth it in the end."
However, I’ll be honest—I liked the first part better; it had more depth and variety. Thanks to his simple narration, the second part was a delight to read, but the initial chapters felt like a written log of his daily sadhana ( which he acknowledges in the book), making them difficult to follow. They also contained detailed explanations of concepts already covered in the first book.
The pace picked up in the final chapters, and from that point on, it was truly unputdownable. The last chapter, in particular, leaves a strong impact.
This is a sublime read that gives you goosebumps, telling the story of an arduous journey filled with purity, focus, tenacity, and sincerity. I found it immensely inspiring. Om Swami combines great storytelling with the details of the Sadhanas he practiced, giving readers a generous look behind the scenes of his spiritual journey.
In Thirteen Months in the Himalayas, Om Swami shares his incredible experience of self-discovery. He describes facing the harshness of the Himalayan winters, dealing with wildlife, and embracing solitude in the mountains. Through intense meditation, he experienced both deep joy and tough challenges.
This book is more than just a personal story; it serves as a guide for readers to think about their own spiritual paths. Om Swami’s journey shows that transformation comes from dedication and seeking a deeper understanding of life.
Swamiji’s Thirteen Months in the Himalaya is a compelling memoir of spiritual introspection, resilience, and devotion. The book chronicles the transformative journey as Swamiji spends over a year living in the remote Himalayas, embracing solitude and simplicity in his pursuit of spiritual awakening. The narrative offers a glimpse into the rigorous life of a Himalayan ascetic. Swamiji vividly describes the harsh, unrelenting winters, the meager food supply, and the physical toll of his practice. His honesty about the challenges he faced-both external and internal-adds depth to the story, making it relatable for readers who may not share his spiritual aspirations but understand the universal human struggle for meaning and fulfillment. One of the book's strengths is its evocative description of the Himalayan landscape. Swamiji paints a vivid picture of snow-laden peaks, serene valleys, and the natural beauty that serves as both - sanctuary and a teacher.
What sets Thirteen Months in the Himalaya apart is its authenticity. Swamiji does not romanticize the spiritual path but presents it as a journey of perseverance, self-discovery, and occasional disillusionment. His humility and vulnerability make the book not just a guide to spirituality but also a testament to the strength of the human spirit. This book will appeal to anyone drawn to spirituality, minimalism, or the mystique of the Himalayas. It's not just a memoir; it's an invitation to reflect on one's own life, priorities, and purpose. Swami's words inspire readers to look inward, reminding us that the most profound journeys often take place within. In summary, Thirteen Months in the Himalaya is a beautifully written, deeply moving account of one man's quest for enlightenment. It's a book that lingers in the mind and heart long after the last page is turned.
Thirteen Months in the Himalayas is a deeply honest and inspiring spiritual memoir by Om Swami. In this book, he shares his experience of spending over a year in the remote Himalayas, living in isolation and dedicating himself fully to meditation and spiritual practice after leaving behind a successful worldly life.
What makes this book special is its truthfulness. Om Swami does not glorify spiritual life. He openly talks about the harsh cold, hunger, loneliness, fear, and inner struggles he faced during his sadhana. At the same time, he beautifully describes moments of peace, devotion, faith, and deep inner joy. His journey shows that spiritual growth is not easy—it requires discipline, patience, and complete surrender.
The writing is simple, clear, and heartfelt. Even readers who are new to spirituality can relate to his emotions and challenges. The book feels like a quiet conversation with a seeker who is honestly sharing his path, doubts, and learnings. It reminds us that transformation happens not through comfort, but through perseverance and faith.
This book is not just about life in the Himalayas—it is about the journey within. It gently encourages readers to reflect on their own lives, priorities, and inner strength.
✨ Highly recommended for anyone interested in spirituality, meditation, mindfulness, or personal growth. It is inspiring, grounding, and deeply moving. Life is all about emptiness and the author had discribed it In simple way. He has been to the tough conditions of Himalaya just to seek What life is all about and how can one gain inner fulfilment to lead a blissful life.
It's difficult to write a review neutrally as a devotee of Om Swami. But I believe this book is a treasure to humanity even if you know him superficially and haven't read his other books. This is the detailed account of a yogic master who went through a self transformation and found His inner divinity through the rigours of Sadhana for 13th months in the Himalayas. It is easy to dismiss one's ability to connect with the Divine when we encounter Siddhas like Him who shine like a beacon. But it's as if He has embodied the struggles of Sadhana as an inspiration for us mere mortals.
It was a roller coaster of a ride for me. I wanted to just keep reading page after page, soaking it all in. The book came at a time where I was struggling with focusing on my baby attempt at Sadhana and comforted me to keep marching on! I will keep this book with me and keep reading it again and again as a source of inspiration. And I bet I will have newer realizations each time I read it. A must read if you want to find the light within you and around you.
Its one of the amazing read. "Thirteen Months In The Himalayas" is not just a book—it's a journey, a spiritual odyssey that gently yet powerfully invites the reader into the rare and sacred world of deep inner transformation. Om Swami’s account of his time spent in intense sadhana (spiritual practice) in the remote Himalayan wilderness is both raw and refined, simple yet profoundly moving.
Personally, this book has been a powerful companion in my own spiritual journey. It has not only deepened my respect for the spiritual path but has also inspired me to cultivate more discipline, silence, and mindfulness in my daily life. Om Swami's unwavering commitment to his goal, his devotion, and his surrender are a living testament to what is possible when one truly seeks the Divine.
If you're on a path of self-discovery, or even just curious about the inner workings of monastic life and spiritual discipline, this book is a must-read. It's not merely a travelogue of physical endurance—it's a map of the soul's awakening.
I would be honest to confess that I had not heard of Om Swami ji beforehand and of his widely acclaimed bibliography. Also, that this book titled ‘Thirteen Months in the Himalayas’ is a writing in continuation to a prequel, wasn’t read but wasn’t necessary to comprehend this read.
We are all here for a purpose but only a few perhaps attain the goal. Swami ji’s quest to get a glimpse of the Divine Mother, the Divine vision is a beautiful pursuit and documented in this most simplified writing.
A commoner can question his experience to be nothing more than a hallucination or a manifestation of a deepened ‘साधना’, but as the saying goes, it is for the believer to accept a rock as a God and vice versa.
उद्यता भानु सहस्रभा चतुर्बाहु समन्विता You are resplendent like the thousand suns, you are four-armed, O Mother Goddess..!
"Thirteen Months in the Himalayas" by Om Swami is a truly captivating read, a journey into the depths of both physical and spiritual endurance. From the very first page, the author draws you into his world, painting a vivid picture of the challenging landscape and the even more challenging inner transformation he underwent. Swami doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of his experience. He lays bare the pain, both physical and mental, that he endured during those thirteen grueling months. This raw honesty adds a powerful layer of authenticity to the narrative, making his struggles feel palpable. While the entire book is an engaging account, the last few chapters were particularly gripping. The intensity of his experiences, coupled with the profound insights he shares, makes for a truly immersive and thought-provoking read. "Thirteen Months in the Himalayas" is more than just a story; it's an exploration of the limits of human resilience and the transformative power of self-discovery. Highly recommended for anyone interested in spirituality, adventure, or simply a well-written and deeply moving memoir.
This is one of the best books that I've read in my life. A sequel of "If truth be told", it describes the journey of 13 months that Om Swami spent in the Himalayas after he left his guru's house.
The book is not just a memoir, but rather how he did his Sadhna, including the various steps, the very methods, mantras and everything.
Also, the book contains just truth as he mentions it in his writings. 13 months in the Himalayas is a book which everyone should read to get a motivation to find their own truth in their life.
To find the very meaning of their life and to be the very person they often aspire to be when they remain in the solitude and the questions of the life hits them.
This book is truly reflective of how committed and true to his goals, Swamijee is. His way with discipline & brute force is enviable. His work ethic isn't something restricted to meditation & mantra jaap, he has in past written software programs & run large IT orgs. Laying my hands on his signed book, and to be able to complete it in 3 days was a surreal experience.
Must read - covering the Himalayan journey part of "If truth be told" ; its written with so much modesty, honesty , truthfulness and yet so deeply profound. Shows the determination and will of one of the greatest saint to walk in this century.
