‘Sitcom Affairs’ is a brilliant debut novel by Judy Roberts. It’s a contemporary romance which offers a compelling exploration of female friendship, personal growth, and the complexities and pressures of modern life, as it follows the lives of three working women.
We join the trio of colleagues, Ellie, Alex, and Jess on their Dorset weekend retreat from their day jobs to write their next award-winning sitcom.

We are quickly pulled into their lives and idiosyncrasies, only to guess at how they’ll react to the new cast characters they encounter during their week-long stay at their agent’s country cottage. Enter Tom, their dashing new neighbour, Richard, his mysterious brother and their enigmatic high-society friend, Camilla.

Ellie, the protagonist, grapples with her challenging family life and seeks consolation in alcohol, only to find herself in an unexpected romance that forces her to confront her choices. Her journey is relatable and poignant, as she struggles to reconcile loyalty to her family with her new-found love and emerging self-identity.

Alex, the free-spirited and unconventional member of the trio, finds herself torn between two men, presenting a fresh take on modern relationships. Her journey of self-discovery creates a farcical and humorous element to the narrative.

Jess, the ambitious and overworked colleague, embodies the stress of balancing her career with her longing for children. Her re-discovery of a lost love serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of past connections and the impact of unfulfilled dreams.

With unexpected twists and turns, from accidents and unexpected trips to Dorchester, to mistaken identity and unannounced visitors,we eventually return with the trio to the real challenges of their ordinary working lives. The plot continues at a fast-pace, dealing expertly with the themes of commitment, deception and betrayal.

The novel is a profound but humorous portrait of modern life. The author masterfully weaves these women’s stories together, in a perfectly controlled plot, to create a rich tapestry of emotions and experiences that resonate deeply. The humor and warmth infused in the writing make the book not only engaging but also uplifting.
‘Sitcom Affairs’ is a fantastic portrait of contemporary womanhood, offering readers both laughter and reflection. It’s a must-read for anyone who appreciates a page-turner that combines subtle character development with heartfelt storytelling. It comes with my strongest possible recommendation.
