Adair When I’m caught in an exposed, embarrassing position while out hiking, I run. I’m surprised when the burly, bearded park ranger who chases me wants to turn his pursuit into a menacing game. I’m shocked when I discover that being his prey ignites a fire inside of me, illuminating a side of myself I never saw before.
He’s a cold, sadistic bully. But I can’t deny the intense pull I feel towards him. And besides, if he really hates my guts like he keeps insisting he does, why does he still chase me?
Jack I am not a nice guy. So when an obnoxious bookworm messes with my serenity, a dark, dirty game of hide-and-seek seems like the perfect way to teach him a lesson. The last thing this blue-eyed brat should want on his heels is a predator hell-bent on hurting and humiliating his prey.
I’m not expecting the raw, primal chemistry that explodes between us, but even as it builds in intensity each time our paths cross, I vow to keep him at a distance. I’ve learned the hard way that dragging the games played under the cover of night into the light of day can blow up in my face.
About Jack Rabbit Jack Rabbit is a 40k-word, dual POV, high-heat MM dark romance novella with a fast-burn, insta-hate dynamic between a bookworm barista and a grumpy-alphahole park ranger with a 12-year age gap. It ends on an HFN; the following book in the Dark Trails series continues the story and ends with an HEA.
This dark romance is appropriate for ages 18+. It contains adult content and material some readers might find upsetting or objectionable. Themes include primal play and kink. More detail is available in the book's content information section, which can be viewed in the Look Inside sample.
"Abruptly, he pushes them in deeper, fingertips all the way at the back of my throat. Oh God, no. I can’t stop it. Even as he yanks them from my mouth, I retch."
Nope, I'm out. Throwing up during sex isn't it. This is too violent for me.
To say I’m obsessed with this duet would be the understatement of the year. After binging a stack of ARCs, I was craving something different—and Jack Rabbit absolutely delivered. 🐇🔥
So many kinks and tropes that are not my usual rodeo… but guess what? I had the best time ever. 👀 I devoured Jack Rabbit in a single sitting and then immediately dove headfirst into Rabbit Hole. Even with work kicking my ass this week, whenever I could sit down and read, I could. not. stop.
From the very first encounter, the chemistry between Addy (aka Bunny 🐰) and Jack was explosive. The primal play, the degradation, the raw intensity—it was written so well that I was hooked (and maybe blushing 👀). But then? The softer moments hit just as hard. Bunny pulling Jack’s tender side out from under that rugged exterior? Jack caring for his Bunny in ways that melted me completely? 🫠 Perfection.
What I really loved was how they balanced each other out—seeing through the masks, pushing each other to grow, and becoming the best versions of themselves. The push and pull between dark, rough scenes and tender, heart-squeezing moments made these books so addictive.
Bottom line: these books are hot as hell 🔥 but also emotional in all the best ways. If you’re looking for something darker with a softer edge (and don’t mind a little—or a lot—of spice 🌶️), I highly recommend falling down this Rabbit Hole.
I get “fast paced, insta-hate” but Jack is just a predatory asshole. BE SO FOR REAL because if you put yourself in that •exact• situation, you are running out of self preservation from A STRANGER.
These two had NEVER spoken prior to Addy getting caught in the woods. Jack sees Addy & judges, then goes through his personal belongings to further his judgement and unnecessary hatred. Everything Jack knows about Addy is PERCEPTION based.
(I’d be throat punching someone for calling me “dumb” & berating me just because I left my tablet on a table because they decided to chase me.)
And just because you have a character tell you “your safe word is Maple.” does not save you from the fact you wrote a glorified 🍇 scene and tried to sell it as dub con/CNC. There was no discussion of hard/soft limits, no consent clearly expressed (I understand you tried to imply it because he ran but no), no level of trust built. One of the last things I read before rage quitting was Jack tackling Addy to the ground & asking if he had tattoos because he wanted to take him to some trashy place & get “Jack’s whøre” branded on him. IM SORRY!! WHAT THE •actual• FXCK?! (In my best David Rose impression)
“I’ll put you back together every time, Bunny. I promise,”
⚠️check your TW/CW and take them seriously⚠️
All Adair wants is to enjoy his afternoon off in the woods, indulging in his favorite wolf shifter mafia smut. But when his excitement gets the better of him, he takes advantage of the secluded spot to let his thoughts—and hands—wander. He thinks he’s alone, lost in his dirty little daydream, until he suddenly isn’t. Enter a rugged, hunky park ranger—a bear of a man in more ways than one—who catches him in the act. Maybe those shifter books are messing with Adair’s head a little too much. Embarrassed, he bolts, leaving behind his tablet—his most incriminating possession. When he finally musters the courage to return, he finds the park ranger not only waiting for him but also flipping through his spicy reading material. What he doesn’t expect is to be chased into the woods, cornered against a tree, and realizing that the he isn’t the only one getting hard from the situation.
Jack has always known he was different. His desires were intense, his kiňks a little too much for past partners. He liked to break them—then put them back together again. But ten years ago, he was the one who got broken, leaving him with a permanent scowl and a personality that kept everyone at arm’s length. That is, until the day he stumbled upon a reckless little bunny named Adair. Jack tried to warn him. He wasn’t a good man. He tried to scare him away, to break him, to shatter him. But Adair wasn’t like anyone else—he liked the chase. Craved the pain. And no matter how hard Jack tried to push him away, something about this little bunny kept pulling him back in.

This is my first read by this author and wow, I am still fanning myself. I cannot wait to read book 2 and find out how this duo plays out. This fast burn be BURNING, this book is feral, spicy, and down right twisted. But I hated having to put it down, I was raving to all my friends that they NEED to read this book. Absolutely no review can do this book justice you just need to read it and experience it for yourself.
This short little book blew me away. It’s a blisteringly hot, seriously kinky story about a sadistic park ranger and the hapless boy he torments after meeting in the park one day. Adair is a down-on-his luck barista with a penchant for steamy romance novels and national parks. Jack, the ranger, is kind of a dick to Adair, but Addy is so into it. Right from the start Jack is properly, cruelly sadistic. He goes hard on Addy. Be warned, there’s a big pain/degradation kink element here and it’s very under-negotiated. Addy is clueless, inexperienced and very confused by what is happening, but he can’t stay away. The dynamic is gross and delicious. Jack is not a good person, but he takes care of Addy in his own weird way. There’s a lot to unpack. I’m giving it 5 stars because I absolutely devoured it, even when it made me uncomfortable. Absolutely cannot wait for the sequel.
3.5 Jack is such a sadist but I actually really like him. I guess the more unhinged they are, the more I like them. Since I don't like characters like Adair, it's no wonder I can't stand him. On top of that he is emo and I am not a fan of emo culture. I did find some actions (one actually, that happens often) disgusting but that didn't deter me from liking this story.
Jack, the local park ranger, has some unconventional desires and had been burned in the past, leaving him seriously grumpy and untrusting of others.
Adier is a barista and self-proclaimed slacker cliche with a handful of college credits in graphic design whose hobbies are walking in the woods and reading trashy romance novels.
When Jack stumbles across Adier in a compromising position on a picnic table one day, he assumes he's a spoiled rich kid who needs to be taught a lesson. Little does he know Adier actually loves Jacks particular form of punishment and finds him coming back for more.
I adore the super grumpy dom and twinky sub trope, and this book does it so so well. The spice is next level delicious. It's full of degradation, impact play, bullying, and so much kink it will have you clutching your pearls!
If you're after a short, spicy, super kinky read, I highly recommend. As always, check your triggers. This is far from a sappy love story.
Vibes: • Age gap • Dom/sub • Impact play • Insta hate • Kinky • Fast burn • Restraints • Primal Play • BDSM • Alphahole • HFN
This story is a great first book for the series and I can’t wait to read the second one. It is very spicy and a dark romance, so be aware of that. I would definitely recommend it.
Adaire is a 20something smut and nature enthusiast who works a low paying job at a coffee shop. He spends his afternoons in the woods where he can peacefully read about poly werewolf/bear motorcycle gang shifters in the mafia (lolz), and has never had issue with this routine in the past. That easy breezy lifestyle comes to a swift halt when a surly park ranger catches Addy in the act of…practicing self care on a park bench in broad daylight. Suffice to say, there are prices to pay for being so brash with one’s exhibitionism.
Jack is a park ranger who could double as a bear shifter motorcycle gang mafioso, and has a short fuse for those who break rules in his park.
*insert hijinks*
I find that books with heavier kink tend to have lower ratings, so I went into this without reading many reviews in hopes it would still be a good time. A good time was indeed had. If you are a lover of kink, I suggest going in full force, but if you’re at all hesitant, I suggest reading the trigger warnings, as this does go in pretty deep. I will say though that if you’re a fan of dark romance and have read some stuff that is primarily disturbing, this isn’t SO kinky that it skirts the line between romance and just being straight up dark. You get both, worry not! Unless that’s what you wanted, in which case, sorry friend.
The only real negative mark I have for it is the same I have for most novellas - it felt a bit short (though there is a part 2 - that said, there are no cliffhangers, so you can call part 1 a HEA if you’re so inclined).
🌶️🌶️🌶️.5/5, just because there is more non-sex kink than sex (but there is a LOT, so this might be a 5/5 for you), and I didn’t always find those moments arousing. Entertaining? Absolutely. Arousing if some were applied to me directly? Yes please! That said, the dirty talk was 🤌🏽💋.

Official Description:
About Jack Rabbit Jack Rabbit is a 40k-word, dual POV, high-heat MM dark romance novella with a fast-burn, insta-hate dynamic between a bookworm barista and a grumpy-alphahole park ranger with a 12-year age gap. It ends on an HFN; the following book in the Dark Trails series continues the story and ends with an HEA.
This novella hits like a steaming hot cup of coffee. It starts out dangerous to you, so hot it could burn but by the end it is nothing but satisfying and comfortable. I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from it, but I enjoyed it!!
Adair is a barista who likes to read smut. Specifically shifter smut. 😉 Caught in the act of REALLY enjoying the story one day, he meets Jack. Jack is the park ranger with a history.
The two start a dark tryst of primal play, degradation, and impact play. Jack fights his feelings hard, just wanting to play with Addy and break him. He doesn't want to get involved.
As the two spend more time together, Jack is just not nice and Addy doesn't understand why. But Jack's attitude and nastiness has an origin. Addy is shocked when he finally starts to break the walls down, and the two are able to give each other what they need.
The conversations between these two are so good. I really liked the evolution of their relationship. It was fast but it made sense.
There is a book two on the way!!
This is dark. Please check triggers and know what you're getting into.
This read follows Addy and Jack, as they navigate a dark and intense romantic tango of sorts.
Addy is caught by a park ranger Jack pleasuring himself in the forest as his reads a bit of smut himself. This is when the chase begins, as Addy makes a run for it he doesnt realise the chase by Jack will result in very rough encounter with a dom who shares no mercy. However, whilst Jacks disregard for any respect for Addy is meant to discourage his return to the forest to protect Jack after the effects of a traumatic end to a previous relationship reigns over him, it only leaves Addy wanting more and more.
This is probably the darkest MM Romance I’ve ever read. I was thinking at one point am I comfortable reading this? This was until a moment when the dom Jack said to his sub Addy he will break them, then to put them back together again. This helped me understand their intense kinks so much more.
There is so much more to this novella then the dark spicy moments, there are tender moments that help so much in understanding of Jack and Addy’s desires.
This novella comes with trigger warnings, I’d advise you read before you start.
Adair (Addy/Bunny) & Jack Wasn't aware going into the book that it was a HFN, but I definitely don't regret reading it even if it means waiting for book #2. I had some trouble with the level of degradation in the story, more because of one particular aspect of it than anything else though. I really enjoyed the slope of the story and how each of the MCs feelings were expressed. For a novella, there was a decent amount of story to be had in this book. I'm really curious to see how the author will take their continued story & HEA in book 2. Each character had significant personal growth in this story, and I hope that will be expanded on more going forward. They both appear to need the connection they forged, and not just because of the current circumstances of their lives (especially Addy's).
An interesting concept for a dark romance, but definitely tamer than some. I really enjoyed exploring this author's writing style. There really wasn't too much actual angst, but some parts raise your blood pressure more than others.
I received an advance copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.
This is for my Dark Romance lovers if that’s you don’t walk but run to grab a copy of this book. Talk about unhinged thoughts and actions 🤭.
Jack is not just a grump but his way of thinking makes you question yourself just a 🤏🏼 because you can’t help but fall a 🤏🏼 in love with his dirty mouth / thoughts. Don’t even get me started on Addy and his unhinged thoughts and what he wants done to him 🤭.
This was much Darker then I am use to but I was buckled up for the ride 😉. Perfect Dark Romance for y’all who can’t get enough of it.
Please ✔️ TRIGGER WARNINGS before jumping in. If you have none then just jump in 😉.

I thoroughly enjoyed this! Received this as an ARC and I have to say, one of the best novellas I've read this year! I'm truly excited to read the next one next year! I immediately fell in love with the characters- Addy and Jack were amazing right off the bat! I adore how sweet Addy is and I love the rough around the edges man that Jack is! I feel as though these two compliment each other super well! I also really enjoyed the side characters! That's actually my only real complaint- I wish we got to see more of Addy's friends in this. However, in a novella, I understand it's a bit harder to focus on side characters. The pacing of this was amazing, I never felt like anything was dragging or that there were scenes that were unnecessary. Everything we saw furthered the characters in front of us and I feel like that's so rare nowadays! Absolutely amazing novella! Definitely recommend and I'm super excited for the next one! <3
This is a predator/prey dark romance novella, featuring Adair and Jack, and is book one in the Dark Trails series.
Adair’s embarrassing encounter with a park ranger turns into a dangerous game that sparks unexpected desire. Jack swears he’s no good, but the pull between them is impossible to ignore.
This story was dark, intense, and a little unhinged in the best way. Adair and Jack’s cat-and-mouse dynamic is addictive—what starts as a dangerous game in the woods turns into raw chemistry that neither of them can resist. It ended in a happy for now, and continues on in book two.
Things to expect in this book are: Book 1 in series Novella MM dark romance Park ranger x barista Age gap (34/22) Size difference Grumpy x sunshine Forced proximity MC loves books Spicy times Dom/sub vibes So much primal play Degradation Breathe play Impact play Edging Tail plug Both catch feelings HFN
3.25⭐️ Picked this up because I needed something fast and easy to read, and this was definitely that! Adair is a struggling student who makes the poor decision to whip it out for a wank in a national park. He’s promptly caught by Jack. Instead of simply kicking Adair out of the park for good, Jack gives Adair a safe word and tells him to RUN 😈
This book has: -D/S and k*nk -CNC, degradation, humiliation, all that jazz -age gap -size difference -unhinged bug guy x pathetic young guy
This book is marketed as a romance, but it’s incredibly smutty. It’s a novella, so it’s very short. I personally feel like this could’ve been a really solid book if it was just written as an erotica, and they didn’t add in the smaller elements of romance to the story. My main group with this book is that the romance was incredibly rushed, and one of the characters Seemed to do a complete 180 very suddenly. That being said it is a very fun easy quick read if you want to read something filthy.
Addy is just like us, with his tablet full of dirty books and gets caught with his pants open in the woods.. (maybe that part isn’t all of us..). When the hot but scary Jack catches him - he runs. And Jack chases.
They end up having several wood rendezvous where Jack degrades and punishes his little Bunny, thinking he will break him and he won’t come back. But he does, and the more he learns that Addy isn’t the stuck up rich kid he assumed he was, he does things to help him out and eventually opens up some by the end.
This was so so hot and filthy, a fab quick afternoon read, and with book 2 coming I am so looking forward to reading more of their story - and their filthy adventures!
I have a bone to pick with some of y'all. If you knew about this book and you were sleeping on it, not telling anybody what you knew, I hate you. Full stop.
Chile, this book had no right being so good and yet here it is. Giving us alphaholes with a heart of gold. Chasing us with some of the best primer play I have ever read. Throwing some filth at us and then wrapping us up in a blanket of sweetness oh, how I swooned! Jack ain't just Adair's type, I'll let ya know right now.
This book is short but it packs a punch. It's smutty, it's heartfelt, and just so good. You know a book is good when I pre-order the second one without a second thought. Five stars. Enough said.
I am completely blown away by Adair and Jack. I honestly don’t think two people could be more suited for each other than these two. Especially kink wise, because holy shiit🥵😮💨 Adair is literally the perfect masochist to Jacks sadism. Jack is a grade A asshole at first but honestly Adair probably wouldn’t have liked him if he wasn’t an asshole because as much as Adair hated jacks meanness he always craved it. This book was scorching hot. If you like primal play, humiliation, degradation and pain this book is 10000% for you. I was hooked. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone love pain as much as Adair does.
Jack Rabbit by Em Jae Black was a filthy MM Dark Bully Romance.
The degradation, primal play, and chasing in the woods was filthy and oh so dirty. This story starts off with Jack being so mean and angry and making a lot of wrong assumptions about Adair, and it takes a long time for them to break through them. I definitely read some firsts in this one, and it sets it up to explore more of the story between Jack the Park Ranger🐻 and Adair the Bunny🐇.
🐇 MM Bully Romance 🐻 BDSM 🐇 Degradation 🐻 Primal play in the woods 🐇 Age Gap (12 yrs) 🐻 HFN
Please, please, check your trigger warnings, to protect yourself, there are a lot of intense scenes in this one💜
I like demeaning/degrading dynamics but only when it reads like it's coming from a place of love, we didn't get that for probably something like 80% of this book so I didn't have a great time reading it. However, once Jack realized his poor attempts to drive Addy away from him was only hurting Addy more than he intended and finally decided to get his head out of his ass and act like a normal human being with Addy, I started to enjoy their dynamic more.
Looking forward to the sequel as I'm sure while still being degrading, it will offer a bit more romance/loving moments.
Just my cup of tea. A needy masochist and a mean sadist who wants to chase the masochist away? Can this be a love story? Well, it goes in that direction right at the very end of the book so I cannot wait for book 2. I am all for asshole Doms who are capable of being nice. Sometimes. Reluctantly. And pushy masochistic bottoms who will rather suffer a subdrop than ending a scene. yum.
If you are not into BDSM, need clear consent to everything, and do not like asshole-y, alpha Doms... then read the the triggers and if you see something you don't like, do not read it. Do not give a bad review because you wanted to try it and gave up. smh
What a delicious and dark book. I went in blind with this book and it blew my mind. The darkness and thrill of everything was perfect.
Adair, or as Jack would say Bunny, and Jack are the perfect couple. They complete one another in a way they would have never expected. Jack needs to give the pain and Bunny desperately needs to feel the pain.
I can't wait to read book 2. These two were definitely made for each other. I can't wait to see how it all ends in the next one. .
This is first in a series and ends with HFN. Jack is the big burly quiet Dom to Addy's slim, quirky sub, only they don't know it at first. A few chance encounters and a little bit of primal chasing leads to some fun adventures. This book for sure has some triggers so check before proceeding. There is degradation but also debasement and not all of it is contained to actual scenes if you will. I love the happiness that they find at the end but it was a hard fought challenge to get Jack to see it.
This was an interesting novella to read. I loved the dynamic between Jack and Adair. This dynamic is one I enjoy reading and I always learn something new about myself while reading. I loved the push and pull between the main characters and I also loved Adair's determination to ask for what he wanted. Adair's needyness and brattyness was also something I really enjoyed, as was Jack's commanding presence.
It felt like a fun, dark read and I'm excited for them to get their HEA and for us to get to know them better.
