Broken Ashes #2

Whispered Warnings - Part One

Rate this book
I’ve got some explaining to do, I know that. I mean, I’d have questions if I were in their position, too. The problem is I don’t have any answers for them, and I seem to be unable to keep things to myself when I’m around them, which means I, of course, shared, and now they’re panicking about how many times I’ve died. Silly men. It’s not like it’s a big deal or anything. Oh wait, it is.

Then there’s Winston and the spirit guides; I don’t even know where to start with them.

The building tension between the guys and me is just another complication that adds a bit more excitement to my suddenly even more complicated life.

We’ve still got to figure out what’s happening to the supes, I promised Navy, after all!

Oh, and figure out why the people I worked for killed me and who they were talking about.

So, not much to do! Who am I kidding? I need a snack and a nap just thinking about it!

Broken Ashes, book 2

Not much really happens in this volume. There are a thousand words when three would do. Neith's weird stream of consciousness rambling goes on quite a bit. I rather enjoy that for the most part. The men seem to discuss and re discuss everything several times as well. Neith is sent on various adventures by unknown entities, talks with strange creatures and her spirit guides, but basically learns nothing about her origins or destiny. There's a whole lot of talking and no doing. Once you see it you can't not see it, but there are way too many uses of the f word. It's distracting and ineffective. So, chill out and slow down and you can enjoy the ride.

I’ve decided to stop reading this series. I don’t know if the first book was actually better or if I just read it at the perfect moment, but I cannot for the life of me get past the writing style in this one.

It annoys me to no end—I cringe hard every time we switch to one of the men’s POVs (not that the FMC's any better) and I just CAN’T DO THIS ANYMORE 😭😭😭

Eh 2.5…maybe 3 ⭐️

Absolutely nothing happens in this book. I would understand drama taking a backseat so the author can accomplish world-building and character development, but that wasn’t done either. All of the male MCs have the exact same personality…which basically equals to no personality. I had a hard time differentiating between each of them because nothing stuck out about any of them. If I was to summarize this book so far, it would be Neith doing something that should be impossible and the guys telling her that it’s impossible. Then they mention doing research that is never done. That’s literally it. Not saying the author did so, but redundancy reminds me of an AI written novel. There are antagonists that are alluded to such as HID and whoever is creating the hybrids, but they are never introduced. Nothing is learned and this is the 2nd book

This was good in a completely unbelievable Mary Sue way, but for some reason it seemed really really long. I kept finding my mind wandering, even though the book was enjoyable. Maybe a me thing ... who knows.

Phenomenal

Great book! There was some breathing room for the main characters.
I really enjoyed getting to know Neith better. She learns she’s actually a supe but no one knows what kind yet, even her spirit guides Winston and Wallace don’t know. She finds out her old friend Sully knew her parents, and T (I can’t remember his name) also knew her parents but they can’t tell her anything since they are spelled not too which is scary cause they are super powerful and the speller would have to be even more powerful than sully and T.
She finds out that even though she was put on Evananders team other teams want her and there maybe a supernatural event called the Choosing that could be life and death for her since she’s not a full supe. I was REALLY hoping we would get to read how she did in the poker event that she was invited too. Sounds like a good time.
Neith always seems to have something up her sleeve. Whether it’s the Darkness that claws at her when she’s about to die and come back, or her kick ass fighting skills. She always surprises the guys with her comebacks and experience.
The guys can get confusing on what their powers are so I had to write it down in my phone so I wouldn’t get confused.
River is a 9tailed Kitsune, Reed is I think a Siren, Raiden is a Reaper, Evander is an Elemental I think with water being his speciality, Ransom is a warloc, Grif a Gargoyle, and Doc is an incubus. They are all top tier power but downplay their abilities a lot so others don’t know what they are up against.
They are still trying to figure out these hybrids. Neith gets taken to another realm in a test, and she must get to a door within 3 hours but fights off weird not normal creatures which is where she finds her sword. I think the guy she saw there that looked worried for her is maybe the guys voice she hears in her head. I actually think the Imps that sent her there, sent her “home”. Which is why she could breathe there without issue as Aparently the air is poisonous to most everyone. I think the voices she hears are from that realm and she might be a princess or a god of that realm which is why she is so special. The guys know about her coming back from the dead but still don’t know about the voices. Neith is afraid they may think she’s crazy. I don’t think she is. I loved this book and couldn’t put it down. I really really need to read the next one.

Easily one of my new favourite reads - and I feel so seen!

I have never really read about a FMC that I identify with more than Neith. It is so so nice to see my racing thoughts and forgetfulness mirrored onto another without reasoning these quirks away with an illness - LOVE embracing her for her, and dealing with it as just a part of her.

The MMC are wonderful, but the characters are still not developed well, and they do tend to blur together a bit.
The names are also a little confusing, as we have nicknames and then the full names used interchangeably which is difficult to follow with so many of them! (I think 7, but I honestly even now can’t find the names for all of them)

Otherwise, 10/10 - highly recommend

Good

WARNING! Cliffhanger! This one is a 4/5 on my trauma scale; not unbearable, but definitely frustrating if you have to wait!

Picking up from the cliffhanger at the end of book one, we find Neith revealing at least one of her secrets to the team, and they figure out another part of it, even as Neith has no idea.
Neith is challenged, and in danger, while she and her team get closer.

Both a lot happens in this book, and yet not a lot at all! The cases that the team are working on make little to no progress, but the mystery of Neith does make some. A few revelations, and realisations are made, and of course Neith’s own brand of chaos makes its appearance.

It’s a fun, fast journey, with a slow burn RH romance that has managed to accomplish just one steamy kiss and lots of innuendo. That being said, the story is engrossing, the world intriguing, and I’m looking forward to seeing a little progress in the next book (we have a poker game, a meet at SID HQ, and of course Navy’s graduation yet to come!).
If you’re a fan of long-form urban fantasy, why choose romance, and a hint of mystery, then this is a book you will enjoy.

>>Personal Reading Notes/Spoilers<<

Read further at your own risk.

The guys find out Neith keeps dying and coming back.
Neith is tethered to Ransom, but doesn’t know it.
Van is a Siren.
Neith is transported to another world by Imps, and manages to survive as well as gain an enchanted sword. It is recognised by the spirit guide, but he didn’t tell Neith anything, although he did managed to recognize the world she went to and tell her that much.
She also spotted a male there just before she left, he seems important, but not sure how.
Neith punches out a reaper who is mean to Ransom. They share a steamy kiss.
The investigation into HID is given to another team, Neith’s group are to prioritize the Hybrid case.
SID boss Ty tells the crew that another team are interested in making Neith one of their group, and that this might precipitate a Choosing, which could be very dangerous to her, since she is still in the process of becoming supe. She saw one once with the dark Dimitri, whose name keeps popping up. I suspect we will see him in the future, and I’m fairly convinced the team will absolutely have to face e choosing at some point.
Neith befriends some Kelpies, and in an epic fight at the end, her guys do too.
The kelpies and their lake are a new addition to the team’s land, but the battle they have indicates a breech in the wards.
Neith realises the voices have a message a time or two; could they be the dead?

no spice just flirting (with crazy good plot!)

Fabulous, hilarious, and entirely captivating follow up. I couldn’t stop reading this book either! I am so hooked. I’m dying at the lack of any spice this is definitely a VERY slow burn. I wouldn’t even say there is tension, but there is definitely solid flirting going on. This is still mainly a heavy plot of magical world of supernaturals with a healthy dose of politics within police type agencies mixed in. I’m getting the hint we will start journeying through a “trials and tribulations” type of plot in the future book(s).. Still a bunch or errors that can be distracting, and I feel like they were trying to hit their character max with the lack of shortened words. Or maybe that’s a language conversation type of change. I don’t know much about the author to guess on what’s going on. See how I said “what’s” in the book they would go out of their way to say “what is” every single time. Also I noticed that almost every chapter seems like the chapters randomly get broken up at the weirdest times. Sometimes it happens after one or two pages and they are literally in the exact same scene and stays the same character viewpoint sometimes its several more pages, but then mid conversation and again still a POV of the same person it breaks into a new chapter mid dialogue of the same character and isn’t used in a way of groundbreaking train of thought or anything like that….On to the next! Some romance soon please?

More adventures for Neith and the guys!

The second installment of the series picks up immediately after the first one ends, so you have to read book one first.
This is another absolute banger from Nikita Parmenter! If you liked the first one, you will not be disappointed. Nikita doesn’t know the meaning of sophomore slump. I was laughing out loud at three percent into the story.
Neith is just as delightfully weird as you would expect and the guys are there for it. While we see the relationships building, there is plenty of action and additions to their world. We are getting more tidbits about Neith, learning as she and the guys do.
One of the things I truly appreciate is that Nikita’s stories end at a natural point. I want more (like yesterday), but I’m not grinding my teeth and pulling my hair out because of an overly dramatic cliffhanger.

This book was crazy! So much happened. I love her relationship with all of them. River is a lot like her but also all protective alpha. Raiden is so worried about what others think, their date into town was so cute. Rivers reaction to her being hurt was cute too. I’m really curious about what she is because she now has an enchanted sword and Betty her gun, plus the spirit guides and tons of people who are magically stopped from telling her things. Who was the guy she saw when she went to the other world? He seemed shocked to see her and then alarmed when she was hurt? Where is she from? I definitely need more answers about her past and honestly all of theirs pasts. I like that she is making friends, Navy and Nessa. The whole Kelpie thing was honestly funny and the guys reaction to her being friends, then later on they all befriend one and learn their names.

Rambling

I really love the storyline! I do, truly. I also love the characters (for the most part) It could be an amazing book … if there was less pointless rambling. It’s not even just the MFC, it’s almost every chapter, every point of view, there’s so much rambling and going off in different directions, things get repeated constantly that makes it hard to remember what the point of the conversation even was and so you have to go back and find where the conversation started and read it again… this entire book only covers like … 3 or 4 days of the characters time, in which only 3 noteworthy things really happen, and 1 of the days they slept through completely. The rest is all rambling tangents and repeating the same thing over and over.

Interesting story but REALLY wordy. The author has a tendency to over-explain and re-explain topics constantly. Honestly, the book could probably be half as long without losing any major plot by just removing unnecessary explanations.

That said, I do like the mystery concerning the main character and her sass. I also like the guys although all of the names starting with “R” gets confusing.

Lastly, the book needs an editor badly. There are lots of missing words and inaccurate sayings. Also the punctuation is frequently wrong which makes it hard to read. I end up having to pause and reread things fairly often because of the errors.

Overall, I’m enjoying the story; I just wish it didn’t repeat the same things over and over as often.

Great Concept, Poor Execution

The story is genuinely intriguing, and I’m invested in seeing how it unfolds. However, the formatting is jarring, with abrupt and often unnecessary chapter breaks that disrupt the flow. It feels like the scenes were stretched just to create more books, making the pacing drag. This is book two of seven in a reverse harem, yet there’s little to no development in any of the seven romantic relationships, which is worrying. The plot has potential, but the execution—especially in structure and pacing—falls flat.

I do plan to continue reading but at this point I’m not sure if I’ll continue now or wait for the last book.

Super fun, but a little slow

A good book! I enjoyed reading it and getting to know the characters better, however; it does kind of leave you feeling like you got all geared up to go to the gym but it was closed when you got there. Still, it's funny and well written. I love how Neith's brain works and her rambling and honesty blurts. I can't wait to see what the next book is going to do with all the set up, teasers, and partial reveals from this book! I am sure once the series is finished and I can read them all at once I won't even notice the pacing on this one.

Whispered Warnings, Part 1, book two of the Broken Ashes series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). This series has some seriously stellar world-building and great characters. The story is unique and hold reader attention. The rest of the series can't be released soon enough for me. I re-read book one, Muted Voices, before book two, and I'll likely re-read the series again as books are released. I will warn grammar nerds, there are numerous small errors with possessive 's' versus plural and dropped words. The writing ids good enough for me to ignore it.

Hmmm

This book felt more like filler to me. I did like the plot still and I liked how much we got to learn about Neith and her interesting abilities. Something that did bother me was that the chapters seemed to end at the most random moments instead of ending on something interesting. So I do believe that some chapters could be combined! Also this definitely isn’t a spicy book, even tho it says it is. There might be some tension and flirting, but it’s as slow of a burn as it’s gonna get. Hopefully we get more answers next book.

On a roll

So here's the thing, I've found of late that you read book one and it's great better than great, but everything that comes next just doesn't have them same zest, well looks like I found the exception as book two was just as good as book one so heading to book three on a wing and a prayer that our luck holds, so we have more of the story now and can't wait for what comes next. Nene is still funny and total crazy at times, but hey aren't we all, please keep up the good work with this one.

Wow

Just wow...
Neith is hilarious and the guys reactions around her...
She's like an excitable puppy with too many things around her to distract (feels a lot like my brains tangents!)
There is no way she isn't at least as strong as them but what's it going to take to believe that?
Mael! That's all...
I could not put the book down till done and will definitely want to reread soon because there's all these cool little details

warning cliffhanger

This book was absolutely amazing, but be aware. It is definitely a part one of two. It ends on a very frustrating Cliff. I absolutely will be rereading this book because I feel like I miss things the first time, but I also had to know what was coming next. Can’t wait to see what other supernatural decides to disrespect one of the guys and she has to break more noses.

just what I needed

This book was exactly what I needed to get out of my reading slump. I’ve loved all of Nikita’s books and this one is just as amazing as the rest. I’m seriously looking forward to the next book. My only wish is that it was April already so I could have book 3. I hope book 3 holds some spice because you could cut the sexual tension between Neith and her guys with a knife 🥵

So good!

I will start out by saying that I was cursing when the last page ended. BUT, it was a really good addition to the storyline. We got to know a little more about some of the guys and their pasts. There are also more questions/mysteries that came up. I love all of Nikita Parmenter's writing, but their is something about Neith that I absolutely LOVE. I'm really looking forward to the next installment in this series!

Wow 5+ stars

Nikita Parmenter has written an exciting story with characters that fun, sexy and badass. Neith is an amazing, fun and entertaining character that is just as badass as the guys, maybe more so. The storyline is fun and exciting, I can’t wait to read what comes next. There are a few grammatical errors but nothing takes away from how entertaining the story is. Thank you Nikita and I’m truly looking forward to reading the next installment of this story.

I hunger for more!

Queen Parmenter did not make us wait long. She actually surprised us with book 2. I’m just as curious as the protagonist to find out more! She always delivers a nice spicy slow burn. Hilarious, exhilarating, action packed, steamy hotness etc…did I mention she is one my favorites authors. Highly recommend any and all of her books.

Everyone needs a Winston

I have only one complaint about this book… it’s that it was too short! I laughed, out loud, because the character dynamics are believable and well planned. I wish I had a Winston in my life! There is so much to love about this series and I cannot wait to see where the next book takes us.
