Follow Raphael on a lone adventure that picks up after issue #150 and ties in with the new ongoing TMNT and Nightwatcher series!
Each arc of Mutant Nation will feature two stories exploring different corners of the TMNT universe, easily accessible to casual fans but with ties connecting the ongoing series and Nightwatcher. Expect old favorites and new surprises!
After the events of “The Armageddon Game,” the Turtles found themselves at a crossroads, attempting to keep their family united while individually feeling the need to break away and explore life in a world that knows about mutants. To clear his head, Raphael jumps on his motorcycle and heads west on a solo road trip with the wind at his back and no destination in mind…until a dormant enemy out for revenge on the Turtles engineers a dangerous detour to Area 51. When Raphael is held hostage with some unexpected old friends, his soul-searching quest mutates into a crisis as he brawls in the desert to keep the E.P.F.’s cache of coveted technology out of the wrong hands. Will Raphael find his new purpose away from his brothers…or just more trouble than he can handle alone?
Collects the prelude story "Monster Island," issues #1–4, and also includes a backup story from writer Erik Burnham. After the events of The Untold Destiny of the Foot Clan, can Casey Jones tolerate Karai’s descent into ruthlessness, or will he turn his back on the Foot? The answer ripples into the upcoming action in Jason Aaron’s TMNT!
What was I worried about? I thought I liked the new direction of the TMNT. Is this going to ruin it? No, it did not. This book is great and fills in the blanks and bridges the gap between the old and new series perfectly.
The first story is some unfinished business in Mutant Town. Many unresolved feelings have come to a boil.
Raphael has gone solo. Well, almost he has Peperoni along for the ride and company. Raph is determined to reach Las Vegas, he will have to contend with small-time theft, punks, and an old enemy on his own mission. This will take him on a side quest. This and the first story happen more or less at the same time.
In the Untold Destiny of the Foot Clan, Casey Jones was working with Kari in the Foot Clan. Why did he join the Foot Clan? What is his future there now with Kari's new powers?
The final mini story the Ninja Frogs take on the Purple Dragons, who wins, does it matter?
This is a great bridging book. I enjoyed every story in this book. It makes me want the next volume of the new series even more. The book finishes with a cover gallery.
Running parallel to the main title, "Mutant Nation" covers side stories that help explain how characters got to certain places as well as keeps us up on where they are during the main story. Highlights/Summary: "Monster Island" - A short tale about Old Hob and his discovery of a new spider-like mutant on the island. Definitely going to see this character again soon. "Pepperoni on the Side" - A super cute story featuring our lovable Triceratops who stops at nothing to rescue Raph's stolen stuff from a criminal. "Ambush at Area 51" - A 4 part story about Raph and Pepperoni's adventures out west. Metalhead tracks him down for help and he ends up rescuing a bunch of mutanimals we already know. Also sets him up for Volume 1. "Casey Jones: Agent of the Foot Clan" - Offers a very interesting perspective on our favorite hooligan as he confronts Karai and her new issues having bonded with a magical enitity. He's always fun and entertaining. "Frogs vs Punks" - Genghis, Attila, and Napolean take on small time punk criminals to defend their area of the city. Reminded me of some of the action figure play I did as a kid.
Overall, none of these stories are essential, but all are entertaining. Looking forward to much more from the TMNT comic universe. Recommend.
A solid interstitial comic containing two separate stories set between the original IDW TMNT run and the sequel volume. I dare say that the Casey Jones story was more interesting than Raph’s, but both were good. The series’s concurrent relaunch was abrupt and confusing, so I wouldn’t mind more interstitial stories that explain where characters go after issue 150.
With the main TMNT series focusing squarely on the four Hamato Brothers, it's nice to have a companion series that remembers all of the other characters that are running around after 150 issues of the main title + extras. IDW have tried a second Turtles series a couple of times, with the Micro/Macro series and TMNT Universe, but this one feels like the first time it's actually important to have.
The three main stories are Monster Island, from the TMNT Alpha issue, which checks in on Old Hob and the EPF for a creepy story about a spider that'll give you nightmares. Then we get Assault On Area 51, which sees Metalhead conscript Raph into breaking into the aforementioned secret base for reasons all his own that end up involving the Mutanimals and Madame Null. Last of all, there's Casey Jones: Agent of the Foot Clan, that follows up directly from the end of the Untold Destiny mini-series and brings Casey Jones back to the fore.
Also included is a Pepperoni solo story which is adorable, and a short and sweet Punk Frogs story for good measure.
TMNT's rich tapestry is only served by having these types of stories going on. Okay, there's a Turtle in Assault, but this book is really about reminding us that there are other characters outside of them, and that they're still relevant even after the relaunch, which I really appreciate.
This volume serves mainly as a bridge between the previous series and the current one. We see what Hob's been up to. Then Raph and Pepperoni get forced into invading Area 51 to rescue some mutants. We see what Casey has been up to since Untold Story of the Foot Clan. There's some cool stuff in this anthology series. Marvel and DC should take note on how to do these well.
